Newbie needs to understand where Whoogle stands - please educate me

I love Whoogle. It's not working for me now (v 0.9.4). I see the comments here, but without context it's hard for me to interpret what the situation really is. Does Whoogle work for anyone? I've tried to update to the beta stream but that is not working for me. If beta is the answer to my problem I'd appreciate any help for what is necessary to load the beta version. Thank you!

P. S. This is my attempt at installing the beta version:

docker pull benbusby/whoogle-search:beta
docker run -p 5000:5000 -d --name whoogle-search benbusby/whoogle-search:beta

If you look at the release notes, the README, or even the pinned Issue about the way forward, it should give you exactly what you need to be able to continue. You do not need to run the beta as the stopgap was released as a regular release.
