feat: richer column value profiles in schema_inspect (ranked values, uniqueness, value shapes, MongoDB) - #1542
Conversation
…uniqueness, value shapes, MongoDB paths) - SQL profile (sqlite, duckdb, postgres) stays one query per table but now returns frequency-ranked values with counts; high-cardinality text shows the 3 most frequent values instead of arbitrary ones - mark columns whose distinct count equals their non-null count as `unique in sample` - report the top value shapes of informative text columns (`H01M4/9066` -> `A9+A9/9+`), skipping free text and plain single-shape words - show one ~160 character example for long text columns - MongoDB: the driver reports nested dotted paths (depth <= 3, `field[]` for arrays of objects) with a presence share, exposes `sampleDocuments`, and `schema_inspect` builds the same value profile from the sampled documents Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nd MongoDB notation - render UUID, ObjectId, Decimal128, Long, Timestamp, regex, Code and MinKey/MaxKey as readable text; values with no text form report "values not profiled (type)" instead of "all NULL" - carry key paths as segments so keys containing "." are read correctly - name nested fields in MongoDB dot notation (`items.sku`) and mark array membership in a "Nested fields" listing - revert `describeTable` to its top-level behaviour; nested fields are derived in `schema_inspect` from the single document sample used for the value profile - bound the sample with `maxTimeMS` and the tool call's abort signal - add real-BSON unit tests, a describeTable regression test, and a real-server e2e case Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WARNING: profileDocuments emits a bare "Value samples:" header when no fields are eligible
Unlike formatProfiles (which returns "" when profiles.length === 0), profileDocuments unconditionally builds values starting with "Value samples...:" even when lines is empty (e.g. when a collection only contains arrays of primitives like { tags: ["a"] } or empty objects { meta: {} }). Guard values on lines.length > 0.

SUGGESTION: Handle _bsontype === "UUID" alongside "Binary" in describeValue
While bson.UUID in bson v6 inherits _bsontype = "Binary" from Binary.prototype, packages/drivers/src/mongodb.ts (lines 216 and 335) also handles _bsontype === "UUID" directly. In describeValue, a value with _bsontype === "UUID" falls through to default, returning { type: "uuid", text: undefined } and rendering values not profiled (uuid).

SUGGESTION: Avoid recomputing averageLength(values) in renderProfile
averageLength(values) is computed on line 222 and again here on line 227 (and profileField on line 403 already calls rank before renderProfile calls rank(p.values) again on line 215). Storing const avgLen = averageLength(values) avoids iterating and spreading every string twice per column.

SUGGESTION: Clean up the temporary directory in finally
mkdtempSync creates a temporary directory on line 313 (and similarly on line 168), but the finally block only closes the DuckDB connection without removing dir (fs.rmSync(dir, { recursive: true, force: true })).

Disambiguate clipped profile examples.
buildProfileSql groups full SQL values but transfers only their first 200 characters. renderProfile can therefore render several distinct values as the same example while retaining separate counts. MongoDB has the same issue because profileField clips full-text keys before rendering.
Keep the bounded transfer. Mark duplicate rendered examples, or include another bounded disambiguator. The existing long-value tests should assert that colliding examples are distinguishable.

Type of change
What does this PR do?
schema_inspectalready adds a value profile for SQLite, DuckDB and Postgres tables. That profile had gaps that hide what a column actually contains:DISTINCT … LIMIT 21with no ordering, so they were arbitrary, not the common ones. This PR fills those gaps. It adds no new tool parameter and changes nothing for other
describeTableconsumers.SQL tables (still one query per table):
status: 4 distinct — open (812), closed (130), ….unique in samplewhen its distinct count equals its non-null count.H01M4/9066is shown asA9+A9/9+. Free text, uuid columns and single letters-only shapes are skipped.MongoDB collections:
Connector.sampleDocuments. It has the same format as SQL: distinct count, ranked values, null share, uniqueness and shape.values not profiled (<type>)instead of being counted as nulls.Nested fields (sampled N docs):section lists nested paths in MongoDB dot notation (items.sku). Array elements and partial presence are noted, e.g.string (array element, in 67% of docs).describeTableoutput is unchanged, so the schema cache, PII detection and schema-sync see exactly what they saw before.maxTimeMS(at most 15 s or the connection timeout) and honours the tool call's abort. It still asks for thesql_executepermission and runs the precedence check.Profiling fails safe as before: if the profile query fails or times out, the schema is still returned.
The output is larger. A text-heavy 40-column table went from 1,899 to 2,858 characters (1.5x); typical tables grow less.

Adds bounded MongoDB collection reads and substantially changes profiling SQL/output for schema inspection; behavior is read-only and fail-safe, but touches connector APIs and agent-facing inspect output.
Overview
Enriches
schema_inspectvalue profiles for SQL (SQLite, DuckDB, Postgres) and adds equivalent profiling for MongoDB collections, without new tool parameters.SQL profiling still uses one bounded query per table, but the SQL now returns frequency-ranked values with counts (not arbitrary
DISTINCTsamples). Rendered output addsunique in sample, per-value counts, value shapes for structured text (e.g. patent codes), and a longer first example for prose columns.MongoDB gets a parallel path: optional
