Hi @t-kramer, could you please review this?

I am moving Clima from pipenv to uv. The app and its package versions stay the same. Only the way we install and run it changes.

What you need to do after this is merged:

# install uv once: https://docs.astral.sh/uv/getting-started/installation/
uv sync # replaces pipenv sync --dev
uv run python main.py # replaces pipenv run python main.py
uv run pre-commit install # refresh the git hook

The tests passed in CI and locally (29 of 29), and the Docker image builds.

Details

  • Pipfile and Pipfile.lock are replaced by pyproject.toml and uv.lock. Every package is pinned to the version in the old Pipfile.lock.
  • Python is 3.11 everywhere. .python-version said 3.10 before, which did not match CI or Docker.
  • The Dockerfile installs with uv. deploy.yml and cloudbuild.yaml are unchanged.
  • CI (python.yml) uses uv.
  • uv run bump2version patch now also updates the version in pyproject.toml and uv.lock.
  • The contributing docs use uv commands. The testing section describes the Playwright tests instead of the old Cypress ones.

Merging into main triggers the Cloud Run deploy. The new Docker image builds and the app imports inside it, but gcloud builds submit has not been run yet, so please check the deploy after merging.

Replace Pipfile and Pipfile.lock with pyproject.toml and uv.lock. Direct
dependencies are pinned to the versions in the old Pipfile.lock, and
transitive packages that jumped a major version are constrained back.

- Pin Python 3.11 in .python-version (was 3.10, unlike CI and Docker)
- Dockerfile installs with uv sync --frozen --no-dev into /app/.venv
- CI uses astral-sh/setup-uv and uv run
- .gcloudignore excludes the .venv symlink
- bump2version also updates pyproject.toml and uv.lock
- Contributing docs use uv; testing section describes Playwright

Walkthrough

The project replaces Pipenv with uv for dependency configuration and execution. It also adds a CARTO style endpoint and updates map rendering to use the CARTO basemap.

Changes: uv migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project dependencies and versioning
pyproject.toml, Pipfile, .python-version, .bumpversion.cfg
pyproject.toml defines project metadata and pinned runtime and development dependencies. Pipfile is removed, the Python version changes to 3.11, and bumpversion updates the project and lockfile versions.
CI and container execution
.github/workflows/python.yml, .github/workflows/deploy.yml, Dockerfile, .gcloudignore, scripts/build_locations_geojson.py
CI and the Docker image use uv to install or run dependencies. The deploy workflow updates action versions. .gcloudignore excludes .venv, and the script’s run instruction uses uv run.
Contributor instructions
docs/contributing/contributing.md, docs/contributing/run-project-locally.md
The guides replace Pipenv commands with uv commands and update dependency, testing, versioning, and deployment instructions.

CARTO basemap

Layer / File(s) Summary
Keyed style endpoint
pages/lib/basemap.py, app.py, tests/test_basemap.py, pytest.ini
The app builds and serves a CARTO style with keyed sprite, glyph, and tile URLs. Tests cover key handling and TileJSON sources. Pytest adds the project root to its import path.
Map rendering and attribution
assets/carto_basemap.js, pages/lib/utils.py, pages/lib/charts_summary.py, pages/select.py, pages/summary.py
Map figures use the style route. Leaflet maps load MapLibre GL and add the CARTO Positron layer. Map views add CARTO logo badges; the selection map also sets bounds and zoom settings.

CI could pass against dependencies that differ from what the Docker image installs, which would defeat the point of pinning versions in this migration. Add a lockfile consistency check to CI and tighten checkout credential handling before merging.

Reject an outdated lockfile in CI.

If a dependency changes in pyproject.toml without a matching uv.lock update, uv sync --frozen does not check the mismatch. Later uv run commands can update the lockfile in CI, so tests can pass while the Docker build installs from the committed stale lockfile. Use uv sync --locked or add uv lock --check before the frozen sync. (docs.astral.sh)

Based on learnings, a changed CI dependency step needs an equivalent manifest/lockfile consistency assertion.

Disable persisted checkout credentials in both workflows.

The pull_request trigger runs checked-out code from pull requests targeting development. actions/checkout currently persists the GitHub token, so commands run through uv run can access it. Set read-only contents permission and disable credential persistence. The deploy workflow also has no later step that requires a writable checkout token.
