Fix nodejs-react-postgres: managed Postgres, no username in compose - #769
Remove the <YOUR_USERNAME> API URL and the user-supplied DATABASE_URL.
The server now serves the built client, and the database is a Defang
managed Postgres service.
Fixes#408

Walkthrough
The sample builds the React client and Node.js server into one service. It configures a Postgres service, adds database connection fallbacks and initialization retries, and updates the deployment instructions.
Changes: Single-service React and Postgres sample

Summary
Build and serve the combined app samples/nodejs-react-postgres/.dockerignore, samples/nodejs-react-postgres/Dockerfile, samples/nodejs-react-postgres/server/index.js
The Docker build compiles the React client and packages it with the Node.js server. Docker ignore rules exclude node_modules, build, and .env paths. Express serves static files from the server’s public directory.
Configure app and database deployment samples/nodejs-react-postgres/compose.yaml, samples/nodejs-react-postgres/README.md
Compose defines the app and Postgres services, including environment variables and health checks. The README describes the deployment and password settings.
Configure database connections and initialization samples/nodejs-react-postgres/server/db.js, samples/nodejs-react-postgres/server/index.js
The server parses DATABASE_URL when set, or uses explicit connection settings and POSTGRES_PASSWORD. Table initialization retries failed queries and exits after the final failure.
The managed database connection can accept an impersonated server certificate; configure trusted certificate verification before merging.

Explanation
The changed files support Issue #408. Static-file serving and the single image remove the user-name-dependent client setup. Compose and database changes provide the managed Postgres configuration. Startup retries, health checks, documentation, and build-context changes support that deployment. No unrelated change is established.

Explanation
Issue #408 has two coding objectives. The Dockerfile builds the React client into the API image, and server/index.js serves the built files, which removes the user-name-dependent client/API setup. compose.yaml defines a Defang-managed db service and passes POSTGRES_PASSWORD; server/db.js uses that service when DATABASE_URL is absent. However, the review materials report ENOTFOUND db throughout staging, so they do not establish that the managed database path works in the target deployment. The materials do not determine whether the failure is in the sample configuration or the deployment harness.
Resolution
Provide a successful target deployment with verified database connectivity, or repository evidence that explains the db hostname mapping. This evidence is required to decide whether the managed-Postgres requirement is met.

Preserve the existing public endpoint.
The service changes from todo_list on port 3000 to app on port 3010. Defang service URLs include the service name and port, so existing links stop reaching the UI after an upgrade. Preserve the old endpoint or provide a redirect and migration instructions. (github.com)

Staging deploy crashed with ENOTFOUND db: the app started before the db

Status: the sample builds and the app serves 200 on staging, but Deploy Changed Samples still fails on 7beb07d for two reasons I could not fix from the sample:
The harness tests every service that has an endpoint as an HTTP URL. The db service's internal host name (...-db.staging.ecs.internal) is tested too, and fails with unsupported protocol scheme, so the result is 1/2 healthy.
The app logs getaddrinfo ENOTFOUND db for the whole run, so it never reaches the database on staging. I tried retrying at startup, dropping published on the db port, and a Debian base image. None helped.
The recent runs for the mastra and mastra-extended samples, which also use a host-mode Postgres service, failed today as well. I did not read their logs, so I do not know if the cause is the same. This may be a staging or harness problem rather than this PR. The local build and a run against postgres:15 both work.
Open question for the owner: should the harness skip services without an HTTP endpoint, or does the sample need a different database setup?

The Debian image did not fix name resolution and has no wget, which the

A database's internal host:port endpoint was tested with an HTTP GET and
failed with 'unsupported protocol scheme', so any sample with a
host-mode database service could not pass.

Yes, I got it now. I had claimed the branch but not the PR number, so your comment did not reach this session; I have added the claim (769 and 408). I fixed the harness in the latest push: endpoints that are not http(s) URLs are skipped and not counted. That leaves the app's ENOTFOUND db problem, which I'll check in the next run.
The Defang CLI rewrites service names in compose env values (db becomes
db-<suffix>), but not a hostname hard-coded in the app. That caused
ENOTFOUND db on staging.
