Summary

Moves the client to the new API at https://api.earningscall.dev, pins the response schema to v4, and honors Retry-After on rate limits. Public results are unchanged for callers.

What the new API changes

I compared v2 and .dev for every endpoint the SDK uses:

Area v2 .dev (schema v4) Impact before this PR
transcript L2/L3 speaker "spk12" + speaker_name_map_v2 {"id","name","title"} object Speaker names lost
calendar bare list {"events": [...]} get_calendar() iterates dict keys
403 plan header X-Plan-Name only X-Plan-Type KeyError in audio/slides
429 — Retry-After: <seconds> + JSON body Ignored; fixed client backoff
events, transcript L1/L4 — extra top-level fields Safe (ignored)

The API serves its newest schema unless the request names one (X-API-Version-Schema); an unknown version silently falls back to v2.

Changes

  • Endpoint: API_BASE defaults to https://api.earningscall.dev, overridable with EARNINGSCALL_API_BASE. EARNINGSCALL_DOMAIN still controls the website domain (exchanges.json, links).
  • Schema pin: every request sends X-API-Version-Schema: v4, so server-side schema upgrades can't silently change responses. The cached request path previously sent no headers at all, and now sends the same headers.
  • Compatibility: normalize_transcript_payload() maps v4 speakers onto Speaker.speaker, Speaker.speaker_info and Transcript.speaker_name_map_v2. get_calendar() accepts both calendar shapes. v2-shaped payloads pass through untouched.
  • Retry-After: on 429/5xx, retries wait for Retry-After (seconds or HTTP date), falling back to retry_strategy backoff when the header is missing.
  • Bugfixes: 403 plan name falls back to X-Plan-Type, so audio/slides raise InsufficientApiAccessError instead of KeyError. The invalid-API-key message was missing its f prefix and showed a literal {DOMAIN}.
  • Docs and version: README retry section updated, and its default delays corrected (they said 3/6/12/24/48s × 5; the real defaults are 1s base × 10 attempts). CHANGELOG and CLAUDE.md updated. Version bumped to 3.1.0.

Tests

  • Recorded real v4 fixtures from api.earningscall.dev with the demo key: transcript L2/L3 and calendar.
  • test_get_transcript_schema_v4_matches_v2 parses the v2 and v4 recordings of the same AAPL Q1 2023 transcript and asserts text, event, speakers and the speaker map are identical.
  • New tests cover Retry-After in seconds, as an HTTP date, missing, and invalid; give-up after max_attempts; the schema header on both cached and uncached paths; the EARNINGSCALL_API_BASE override; X-Plan-Type 403s; and the 401 message.
  • Existing fixtures had only their host rewritten (28 files, URL-only diffs). They still use the v2 shape, so they also cover the pass-through path.

Test plan

  • pytest on 3.11–3.15: 114 passed each (89 existing + 25 new)
  • Reverted each of the 7 fixes one at a time and confirmed its tests fail
  • ruff 0.17.1, black 26.10.1, mypy 2.4.0: clean
  • Live smoke test against api.earningscall.dev (demo key): events, transcript L1–L4 with speaker info, MSFT, calendar, slides 404. A forced 429 was retried after the server's 1s Retry-After with base_delay set to 30s
  • CI green

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • The API endpoint can be configured with an environment variable, and requests use schema version 4.
    • Calendar and transcript responses support the latest formats while remaining compatible with existing data.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Retries honor the server’s Retry-After delay for rate limits and server errors, with exponential backoff as a fallback.
    • Access-denied messages more reliably identify the required plan, and invalid API-key errors link to the appropriate page.

Switch the API base from https://v2.api.earningscall.biz to
https://api.earningscall.dev, overridable with EARNINGSCALL_API_BASE.

The new API returns its newest response schema (v4) unless the request
names one, and v4 changes shapes the client parses:
- Transcript speakers are inlined as {"id", "name", "title"} instead of
  a speaker id plus speaker_name_map_v2.
- Calendar results are wrapped as {"events": [...]} instead of a list.
- 403 responses send X-Plan-Type but no longer X-Plan-Name, which made
  download_audio_file()/download_slide_deck() raise KeyError.

Pin X-API-Version-Schema: v4 on every request (including the cached
path, which previously sent no headers) so future server-side schema
upgrades can't silently change responses. Map v4 speakers back onto
Speaker.speaker / speaker_info / speaker_name_map_v2 and unwrap the
calendar, so public results are unchanged; a test parses the v2 and v4
recordings of the same transcript and asserts they are identical.

On 429 and 5xx, retries now wait for the Retry-After header (seconds or
HTTP date) instead of the client's own backoff, falling back to
retry_strategy when the header is missing.

Also fix the invalid API key message, which was missing its f-string
prefix and showed a literal {DOMAIN}.

Bump version to 3.1.0.

📝 Walkthrough

Version 3.1.0 updates the API base and retry behavior, pins requests to schema v4, and handles v4 transcript and calendar response shapes. Access-error messages now use plan-name fallbacks. Tests, fixtures, and documentation reflect these changes.

Changes: API client and retry behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
API base, retries, and release alignment
earningscall/api.py, pyproject.toml, CHANGELOG.md, README.md, CLAUDE.md, tests/test_api.py, tests/data/*, tests/test_*
The API base defaults to https://api.earningscall.dev and can be overridden with EARNINGSCALL_API_BASE. Retry handling parses numeric or HTTP-date Retry-After values, uses configured backoff when the header is unavailable, and reports the HTTP status. The invalid-key message uses the configured domain. Release metadata, documentation, tests, and recorded API URLs are updated.

Schema v4 response handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Schema v4 response handling
earningscall/api.py, earningscall/company.py, earningscall/transcript.py, earningscall/exports.py, tests/data/*schema-v4*, tests/test_api.py, tests/test_get_calendar.py, tests/test_get_transcript.py, CLAUDE.md
Requests include the schema version header. Transcript speaker objects are normalized into speaker IDs and a name map. Calendar results can be read from a dictionary containing events or from a bare list. Fixtures and tests cover the v4 response shapes.

Access-error messages

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan-name fallback for access errors
earningscall/company.py, tests/test_company.py, tests/test_download_audio_files.py, tests/test_download_slide_decks.py
Transcript, audio, and slide-deck access errors use X-Plan-Name, then X-Plan-Type, and otherwise report unknown. Tests cover plan-name precedence and audio and slide-deck responses that provide X-Plan-Type.

Address CodeRabbit review on #49:
- float() accepts "inf"/"nan" (and "1e400" overflows to inf), which
time.sleep() rejects with OverflowError/ValueError and aborted the
retry. Treat non-finite values as missing so the backoff applies.
- asctime-format and "-0000" HTTP dates parse to naive datetimes, so
subtracting the aware current time raised TypeError. HTTP dates are
always GMT, so treat them as UTC.

Coveralls reported -0.2%: _plan_name(None) and normalizing a v4 payload
that also contains a speaker id string were untested. Cover both.
