Workstream PR Trust Bundle

Change

WS-MCP-002-13 - Task operations and imports

Goal

Complete the current public Workstream product catalogue by expanding the independent MCP adapter from 108 to 132 fixed tools.

This PR has been reconciled onto current main 09a01885d after #686 merged.

Intent And Planning Context

  • Initiative: .commitrail/initiatives/WS-MCP-002/OVERVIEW.md
  • Commitrail record: .commitrail/initiatives/WS-MCP-002/WS-MCP-002-13.md

What Changed

  • Added 24 fixed project-list, task-management, audit, import, service-actor and model-operation tools.
  • Captured 24 tamper-evident OpenAPI snapshots at f04313855, then recaptured the two task-list snapshots at reconciled main 517fe54c4 after their response schemas changed.
  • Added bounded exact-byte task-import source upload/read handling with integrity projections.
  • Added selector binding, model project/body binding, safe mutation uncertainty and exact 132-tool catalogue checks.
  • Updated package contents, MCP CI, README, roadmap and Commitrail status.

Why It Changed

The earlier plan expected 20 remaining tools and a 128-tool total. Current OpenAPI contains four additional public model operations, so this bounded slice includes all 24 uncovered product operations and reaches 132 tools. Both health routes remain excluded as operational liveness.

Design Chosen

Each tool owns one method/path/status tuple. The adapter forwards the caller bearer unchanged, performs no local authorization, generates no replay keys and never retries mutations. Workstream remains authoritative for identity, authorization, idempotency, lifecycle and storage. Import content is decoded once, bounded to 8 MiB and forwarded as exact application/json bytes.

Alternatives Rejected

  • A generic HTTP tool, because it would expose arbitrary routing.
  • Local authorization, replay state or import storage, because Workstream owns those decisions and records.
  • Leaving the four newer model operations out while claiming current catalogue completion.

Scope Control

Allowed Files Changed

  • mcp_server/
  • .github/workflows/mcp.yml
  • WS-MCP-002 Commitrail/index and docs/roadmap_status.md

Files Outside Stated Scope

  • None

Product Behavior

  • Product behavior changed: the MCP catalogue adds 24 fixed tools and now exposes 132 current public product operations.

Result Summary

Ruff: passed
Strict mypy: passed
MCP tests: 874 passed, 5 environment-gated skips, 92% coverage
Current OpenAPI proof: 143 passed against reconciled main; 132 non-health product operations confirmed
Wheel build and clean Python 3.12 package-independence proof: passed
Built wheel contract count: 132
Commitrail, documentation and whitespace checks: passed

Acceptance Criteria Proof

  • Exactly 132 unique tools and zero resources/prompts.
  • All 24 new method/path/status contracts match current backend OpenAPI.
  • Caller bearer and typed mutation keys are forwarded unchanged.
  • Import source bytes are bounded, integrity-projected and never logged.
  • Project/body mismatches and substituted responses fail closed.
  • No local authorization, replay state, database access or private import.

Test Delta

Tests Added

  • Task-operation catalogue, fixed dispatch, selector, binary, failure and boundary tests.
  • Tamper-evident OpenAPI drift tests for all 24 operations and the 132-operation census.

Tests Modified

  • Exact full catalogue and earlier appended-slice assertions.

Tests Removed Or Skipped

  • None. Five existing tests remain environment-gated locally.

External Review

CodeRabbit findings and GitHub checks will be handled on the exact PR head. Human approval and merge remain maintainer-owned.

CI And Gate Integrity

  • No workflow weakening.
  • No lint/test/docstring gate weakening.
  • Tests protect meaningful behavior; no tests were removed.
  • No package script weakening.
  • No unpinned new GitHub Action.
  • Checkout credential persistence remains disabled.

Remaining Risks

  • Hosted PostgreSQL parity, container execution and deployed proxy behavior remain CI/deployment proof. The MCP package job now has a 45-minute bound because the unchanged full suite exceeded its former 15-minute limit. The exact-head MCP package and real-API checks passed; one backend schema-contract lane exceeded its separate 1,500-second runner bound under contention and requires a clean retry.

Follow-Up Work

  • Run the assembled installed-adapter and real-API release proof after the binding PRs merge.

Human Review Focus

Please inspect fixed route coverage, import byte handling, selector binding, mutation uncertainty, model project binding and package inclusion.

Human Merge Ownership

  • I can explain what changed.
  • I can explain why it changed.
  • I know what could break.
  • I accept the remaining risks.
  • The user explicitly approved this specific PR for merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Walkthrough

The MCP adapter expands from 90 to 132 tools. It adds bindings for task execution, submissions, project and task management, imports, audit, service actors, and model operations, with API contracts, validation, tests, packaging, and catalogue checks.

Changes: Task execution and submissions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Task execution contracts and bindings
mcp_server/contracts/{task_*,preparation_*,submission_*,preparations_list.json}, mcp_server/workstream_mcp/{schemas.py,http_gateway.py,limits.py}, mcp_server/workstream_mcp/tools/task_execution.py, mcp_server/tests/test_task_execution*
Adds 18 task-execution tools for task and work-context reads, task transitions, guide-document reads, submission preparation, and submission history and creation. Inputs and responses are validated against fixed contracts. Preparation accepts bounded Base64 ZIP data; guide-document reads use a binary response path.
Task execution wiring and documentation
mcp_server/workstream_mcp/server.py, mcp_server/README.md, .commitrail/initiatives/WS-MCP-002/WS-MCP-002-12.md
The server lists and dispatches the new tools. The documentation records idempotency-key handling, preparation bounds, claim/start separation, and mutation outcomes.

Project, import, audit, and model operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Operation contracts and schemas
mcp_server/contracts/{projects_list.json,management_*,operational_*,audit_*,task_import_*,service_actor_create.json,project_model_*}, mcp_server/workstream_mcp/schemas.py
Adds contracts and input/output schemas for 24 project-list, task-management, audit, import, service-actor, and model operations.
Operation dispatch and validation
mcp_server/workstream_mcp/http_gateway.py, mcp_server/workstream_mcp/tools/task_operations.py, mcp_server/tests/test_task_operations.py, mcp_server/tests/test_task_operation_contract_drift.py
Adds fixed route dispatch, selector and response checks, and bounded task-import source upload and read handling. The tests cover tool catalogues, forwarding, input rejection, response validation, and contract drift.

Catalogue and release checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalogue integration and release checks
.github/workflows/mcp.yml, mcp_server/pyproject.toml, mcp_server/tests/test_catalogue.py, mcp_server/tests/test_checker_artifacts.py, .commitrail/INDEX.md, .commitrail/initiatives/WS-MCP-002/*, docs/roadmap_status.md, mcp_server/README.md
The server catalogue and package include the added tools and contracts. Workflow checks require 132 unique tools and run both new contract-drift suites. Project records and documentation update the tool count and current initiative boundaries.

  • Issue 576: The added task-import source, batch, screening, release, and management operations match the operations identified as inputs to the approved Terminal Systems project.
  • Issue 555: The adapter exposes several operations used by the connected journey, including project listing, task creation and transitions, submissions, and imports; hosted journey proof is not included.
  • Issue 493: The new model-profile, budget, usage-effect, and recovery-child interfaces are part of the model-check integration boundary described by the issue.
  • Issue 663: The new projects_list binding returns the project catalogue page described by the issue.
  • Issue 581: The adapter reports uncertain mutation outcomes without retrying. The issue’s source-specific recovery and durable-worker proof are not included.
  • Issue 582: The adapter adds bounded exact-byte handling for import-source content. The hosted custody and provider verification described by the issue are not included.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to cfb48

This change adds 24 MCP tools. The reviewed bindings, schemas and release checks line up with their contracts, and the earlier recovery-slot concern does not hold. Hosted backend and release proof are still outstanding, as the PR states.

Explanation

The title "feat(mcp): add task operations and imports" matches the main change: the PR adds task-operation, task-import, and related MCP tools. It is specific and follows conventional-commit style. It does not name the four model operations or the 108-to-132 expansion, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description follows the repository template closely. It includes the Change, Goal, Intent and Planning Context, What Changed, Why It Changed, Design Chosen, Alternatives Rejected, Scope Control, Product Behavior, Evidence (commands and results), Acceptance Criteria Proof, Test Delta, Impact-Routed Reviewer Results, External Review, CI and Gate Integrity, Remaining Risks, Follow-Up Work, Human Review Focus, and Human Merge Ownership sections. It states the reviewed code SHA and reports the remaining hosted-CI and release-proof gaps. Minor gaps: the reviewer results table lacks reviewer run IDs and the reviewed-at timestamp, and the Commitrail record reference is a path rather than a record ID. The Commands Run block contains placeholder values (WORKSTREAM_MCP_OPENAPI_COMMAND=..., WORKSTREAM_MCP_WHEEL_PYTHON=...) that do not show the actual configuration used. These gaps do not make the description largely incomplete.

Check the forwarded slot in this test.

The _request stub accepts any arguments and builds its response from the closed-over body. The test can pass even if the adapter adds slot_index before sending the request. Assert that kwargs["json_body"]["slot"] equals the input slot and omits slot_index.

@Abiorh, all three CodeRabbit findings are addressed in 85ab45a, including a regression test for the recovery-slot default. The full local MCP suite passes: 874 passed, 5 skipped, 92% coverage. The remaining Agent Gates failure is only COMMITRAIL_MULTIPLE_CHANGE_RECORDS because this PR is stacked on #686. Once #686 merges, I will rebase #687 onto main and rerun CI.

Follow-up CodeRabbit nit addressed in 1772a02: the regression test now proves the outbound slot is forwarded unchanged and does not add slot_index. Focused task-operation tests pass (33 passed), with Ruff and strict mypy also green.

@Abiorh, #687 is now rebased onto current main after #686 merged. The branch is conflict-free and Agent Gates passed. I refreshed only the two task-list snapshots that changed under the current locked backend OpenAPI; all 143 contract checks pass, and the full MCP suite remains green with 874 passed, 5 skipped and 92% coverage. The latest Backend run is queued behind the earlier matrix run, which currently has no failures. Exact head: 04e0250dd.

@Abiorh, CI is now fully green on exact head 3f3020bb9. The MCP package completed in 37m55s with the corrected 45-minute bound, and the real-API contract, all backend lanes including schema_contracts, full-suite, Agent Gates, and the final test gate all passed. The branch is clean and mergeable, ready for your review.
