Stacked on #871. Review only this PR's last two commits. The first 16 are #871's: "Add an in-process embedding engine to the inference patch", "Add conversation memory's encrypted store and engine", "Read memory sources from their local stores on this Mac", "Let suggestions use the earlier messages of the conversation", "Add Settings -> Memory and start memory with the app", "Document conversation memory", "Require a mail reply's whole quote header to be the thread's people", "Make an ambiguous expression explicit and give memory's main-actor classes a nonisolated deinit", "Split expressions that older compilers type-check too slowly", "Move the memory poll loop body out of its Task closure", "Keep deleted memory out of caches and stale writes, and starts in order", "Make the memory readers reconcile, retry and survive bad input", "Accept only an unambiguous client quote header, and close cache races", "Give mail no conversation scope from its body", "Fix the memory issues #872's review found in #871's files", "Never download an online-only cloud file again because we gave it back".

Summary

Memory syncs run at launch and every 15 minutes on AC power. On a real Mac, two sources made them expensive:

  • New Outlook: every sync decoded the whole store.
  • Google Drive: every sync downloaded and re-read hundreds of unchanged files.

This PR makes both read only what changed.

Source (per sync) Before After
New Outlook (276 MB store, about 45,700 records) 16–58 s of a full core 0.1–0.6 s (first scan after launch 11–12 s)
Google Drive (3,905 documents, 3,199 online-only) 325–470 s, downloading about 350 files 0 s
iCloud Drive 6–7 s 1–4 s
Documents 4–5 s 0–1 s

New Outlook: read only what changed in HxStore.hxd

  • Scan cache. HxStoreScanCache keeps, for each stretch of the file, a digest of its bytes and what reading it gave: a record's block and the few fields needed to pick each message's fullest version, or a gap with the offsets whose header looked plausible.
    • The next scan reuses a stretch only where its bytes digest the same at the same offset.
    • A gap's plausible headers are tried again, because a record Outlook was still writing can complete past later records.
    • So the result always equals a full scan's, however Outlook writes the file.
  • Digest and memory use. The digest is a seeded 4-lane xxHash64 round, about 10 GB/s. The cache lives in memory only, about 48 bytes per segment.
  • Bodies. They are converted only for messages inside the cursor's look-back (sentAfter), not the whole mailbox.
  • Priority. Memory syncs run at background priority, on the efficiency cores. Measured on a drive catching up, reading was as fast as at utility priority.
  • Log. Outlook store scanned records the file size, records, reuse and seconds.

On the real store, the first scan took 11.7 s and the next 0.6 s, reusing 98% of the bytes.

Not done: skipping the scan when the file's size and modification time are unchanged. A write through a shared mapping updates the modification time only when it is flushed, so that skip could miss new mail.

Cloud drives: stop reading unchanged files again

  • A seen file changes only when its content is modified. A file's status-change time also moves when its content is downloaded or given back, and when the drive updates its records. On the real drive, 3,523 of 3,905 files had a status-change time within the last day, all with old modification times.
    • A file not seen before still arrives by its status-change time, so one moved in with an old date is still read.
    • The cursor keeps the last complete listing as 8-byte SHA-256 prefixes in one base64 string.
    • A cursor without that listing takes the current one, so the update doesn't read the whole drive again.
  • A file with no text is done until it changes. This covers scanned or locked PDFs and empty files. Before, they were retried on every sync like unreadable files: 138 such files cost about 150 s each sync. DocumentTextExtractor.extract now tells text, no text and unreadable apart, and keeps the error for the log.
  • Failures reach the next sync. When a sync's last page reads nothing, the earlier pages' failures are still handed on. Before, they waited forever.
  • Busy files are given back again. A file the drive still holds right after the read ("in use") is evicted again a moment later. On the real drive, 4 of 138 evictions failed that way and left the download behind.
  • One listing per sync. The cloud drive and Documents readers list their folders once: liveConversationIDs reuses the listing the read just took.
  • Log. Cloud drive read records the files listed, read, without text, unreadable (with errors) and retried.

Tests

  • HxStoreScanCacheTests (12 tests): an incremental scan equals a full scan after records are:

    • added at the end, rewritten in place or written into a gap
    • cut off and completed, or completed past later records
    • left behind by a shorter or replaced file

Also covered: an unchanged file decodes nothing, a future time becomes a send time once plausible, sentAfter, and the digest. Breaking the digest check or the gap recheck makes tests fail.

  • CloudDocumentsTests (7 new tests):

    • a file with no text isn't read again until it changes
    • a seen file changes only when modified, while a new one still arrives
    • a cursor without seen files takes the current listing
    • failures reach the next sync when its last page is empty
    • only a busy eviction is retried
    • the read's listing is reused
    • both cursor forms read and write

The full suite on this branch: 2,945 tests, 0 failures. Checked in the app on the real Outlook store and Google Drive: the first sync after launch and the next one, 15 minutes later.

Summary

Reviewed the last two commits, as requested. They cache Outlook scan results and use remembered cloud-file IDs to avoid rereading unchanged documents.

  • New Outlook reuses unchanged store records between memory syncs.
  • Cloud-drive syncs skip seen files that have not changed.

senadaruc explicitly described adopting the current listing for legacy cursors as intentional: it avoids rereading the whole drive after updating.

Conversation memory embeds passages with llama.cpp, next to the
completion engine. The pending CotabbyInference patch gains
CotabbyEmbeddingEngine: its own model and context (embeddings on, the
model's pooling), texts packed into one decode per batch and the cells
cleared after each, so memory use is fixed by the batch size. Measured
with Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B Q8_0: about 38 mail-sized passages per second
at a flat ~880 MB with a 1024-token batch, and vectors within cosine
0.9996 of sentence-transformers.

llama.cpp's backend is process-wide, so both engines now share it
through a reference-counted guard; unloading one no longer frees the
backend under the other.

This needs the matching change in FuJacob/cotabbyinference; until then
it rides in patches/cotabbyinference-upstream-pending.patch like the
other pending APIs.

A cancel is a generation counter, noted before a call waits for the
lock, so a cancel issued while a call is still waiting is not lost.

The core of an optional, on-device memory of the user's conversations,
with no source and no UI yet:

- MemoryStore keeps messages, conversations, participants, sync cursors
and one vector per passage in SQLite. Text, names, titles, ids,
cursors and vectors are sealed with MemoryVault (AES-256-GCM, subkeys
from a 256-bit Keychain key that never syncs); lookups and record ids
use HMAC tags. Timestamps, sources and the settings file are plain.
- MemoryEngine is the ingest pipeline every source shares (exclusions,
retention, mail quote stripping, secret and one-time-code scrubbing),
background indexing (newest first, each vector persisted as it is
computed, so a run resumes), and the scoped search: the conversation
the window names, then only conversations with exactly the same
people; an unknown, partial or ambiguous title returns nothing, and a
scope can require the thread to have exactly given people (a mail
reply's quoted addresses, as far as memory knows them), which also
picks the right audience among a mail thread's conversations. A mail
sender's display name never becomes a participant. A stopped engine
  refuses further writes.
- Search is hybrid: an exact half-precision vector scan with Accelerate
(FlatVectorIndex, filtered before scoring, so a scoped search never
comes back short) fused with BM25 over HMAC-tagged terms.
- EmbeddingCore wraps the inference package's embedding engine;
queries jump ahead of background batches. EmbeddingSchedulePolicy
lets small deltas run anytime and keeps backlogs to a plugged-in,
idle, cool Mac outside Low Power Mode; nothing runs while a suggestion
  is generating.
- MemoryEngineController owns on/off, the pinned embedding model
download (Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B Q8_0, pinned to a repository commit,
size and SHA-256 checked) and the
key. The Keychain store of typing history gains a label so memory's
item is named for what it is.

One read-only reader per source, each paging after a cursor it defines,
driven by MemoryHistorySync (when a source is switched on, on demand,
and every 15 minutes on AC power). Nothing is fetched from a network
and no account API is used:

- WhatsApp: its ChatStorage database.
- Apple Mail: the Envelope Index plus .emlx files, parsed by
EmailBodyExtractor (charsets, quoted-printable, HTML-only mail). Mail
is attacker-controlled, so parsing is bounded and linear: message,
header, boundary, nesting and part limits, and HTML converted in one
pass instead of regular expressions that rescan from every unclosed
tag. Mail counts as the user's own only when it sits in a Sent
mailbox, and junk is skipped, so a spoofed From cannot put words in
  the user's mouth.
- Outlook: the classic database, and New Outlook's HxStore.hxd (LZ4
blocks and HxStoreRecordParser), including meeting invitations.
HxStore records have no thread id or recipients, so a conversation
there is one topic with one sender, never a subject alone; the user's
own mail and mail without a sender each stay a conversation of their
own. In Mail and classic Outlook a message without a thread id is its
own conversation, never a shared bucket. Mail clients join threads by
References/In-Reply-To and subject, which any sender controls, so a
Mail or classic Outlook conversation is one thread with one audience
(MailAudience): a stranger folded into a thread, or a reply with
someone new on it, is another conversation. Mail people are addresses,
never display names or Reply-To, and only Mail's Sent mailbox or
Outlook's outgoing flag makes a message the user's own.
- Microsoft Teams: the new client's cache, read natively in place
(Snappy, LevelDB, Chromium IndexedDB and V8 value readers, a Swift
port of parts of CCL Forensics' MIT-licensed ccl_chromium_reader)
and mapped by TeamsMessageMapper. Group chats (Teams and WhatsApp)
carry a marker of their own, so they never share memory with a 1:1
  chat or another group.
- Calendar: events through EventKit, as records without call
boilerplate; the user is never a participant.
- A documents folder (text and Markdown), and iCloud Drive, Google
Drive and OneDrive documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, RTF,
text), with a bounded ZIP reader and total-size caps for Office files.

A running sync can be cancelled and awaited (cancelSync), and stopping
the schedule cancels it; a cancelled sync drops the page it was reading
with its cursor, so after a delete nothing comes back and nothing is
skipped.

The protected stores need Full Disk Access; the access check opens only
the files of these sources. Reading an online-only cloud document makes
the drive's app download it. Reader tests use synthetic fixtures built
in the tests.

Conversation memory reaches the autocomplete prompt:

- ConversationScopeResolver turns the focused app and window title into
a scope (the chat name or mail subject, within the app's enabled
memory sources; Teams titles are parsed for the open chat) and a
stable query of complete 8-word blocks. A subject does not say who a
mail is for, so a mail gets memory only as a reply or forward, from a
thread with exactly the people the client's quote header names (only
the first header block: addresses in the quoted body are the sender's
own text and could name another thread's people).
- MemoryRetriever implements the new SuggestionMemoryProviding: it
answers from its cache and never makes a suggestion wait; a stale
query starts a background lookup, and when new lines land for the
conversation in focus while nothing is shown, the coordinator offers a
suggestion that uses them. Lookups log memory_ms, memory_engine_ms,
  memory_hits and memory_scope.
- Requests carry memorySnippets; the base prompt gets an "Earlier in
this conversation:" recap (priority 39, all or nothing) and Apple's
prompt a framed equivalent that marks them as quoted messages, not
instructions. A contact's name cannot start a line or pass for "You".
- Memory never reaches the endpoint engine: the retriever returns
nothing for it, the request factory blanks it, and the router drops
any request still carrying it (memoryWithheldFromEndpoint).
- The router counts generations in flight, which memory's indexing
reads to stay off the GPU while a suggestion is being generated.
- The recall suite gains a memorySnippets field and five memory cases
  where the fact the completion needs is only in an earlier message;
COTABBY_EVAL_NO_MEMORY=1 runs them without memory as the baseline.

- Settings -> Memory: the on/off switch with the embedding model
download, status and recovery from a key mismatch; Full Disk Access
guidance (macOS has no prompt for it: the row opens the list, reveals
  this copy of Cotabby, and re-checks when Cotabby becomes active);
Sources with readiness, counts, Sync Now and Forget per source, and
Calendar access; Index settings and statistics (size on disk, vector
memory, search and query-embedding latency, indexing rate); Privacy
(retention, never-remember lists, Delete All); and a Playground that
shows what memory retrieves for a conversation and can add it to the
never-remember list. Forget and Delete All cancel and await the
  source's sync before deleting.
- CotabbyAppEnvironment builds the controller, sync, control model and
retriever once, hands the retriever to the suggestion coordinator and
  has indexing wait while the router is generating;
AppDelegate starts memory only when the user left it on and stops it
on quit. Sources sync when the engine starts and every 15 minutes on
  AC after that.
- Reading events under the hardened runtime needs the Calendars
resource-access entitlement and a usage string. The app now has a
checked-in Cotabby.entitlements that Xcode, the local signing helper,
kickstart and the release workflow all sign with, so a re-sign keeps
  it.

Everything is off by default: memory, and each of its sources.

ARCHITECTURE.md gains the memory data flow, its privacy rules and the

The audience check ignored quoted addresses memory did not know, so a
stranger could copy a thread's people and subject into their own mail's
quote header and the reply to them drew on that thread. Now every
address in the client's quote header, less the addresses the user sends
from, must equal the thread's people; an unknown address is someone
else and gives no memory.

The mail readers report the user's own addresses (the senders of sent
mail per account in Mail, of outgoing mail in Outlook), and the store
keeps them as HMAC tags per source. An own address memory has not
learned yet counts as someone else, which is the safe side.

…asses a nonisolated deinit

CI's Xcode 26.3 rejected `abs(number) < 1e15` in V8ValueDeserializer as
ambiguous: with Accelerate imported elsewhere in the module, older
compilers see more than one `abs`. The key conversion now uses
`magnitude` and explicit types, and the BM25 idf terms call
`Foundation.log` with an explicit Double.

On the macOS 26 runtime, releasing a main-actor class that has no
nonisolated deinit goes through the back-deployment main-actor shim,
which over-releases and crashes the test host. MemoryControlModel,
MemoryEngineController, MemoryHistorySync and MemoryRetriever get a
nonisolated deinit (their state is safe to release from any thread), as
SuggestionSettingsModel and EmojiUsageStore already do, and the
controller's StatusRelay is nonisolated.

Xcode 26.3's compiler gave up on IndexedDBReader.makePrefix in the test
build ("unable to type-check this expression in reasonable time"). Swift
6.4 accepts it quickly, so every multi-operator integer expression, range
check chain, `reduce` byte assembly and literal-led `+` array chain in the
memory readers and their tests is now built in typed steps: shift and
mask values in typed lets, byte reads in loops, range checks as `switch`
cases, and test fixtures joined through a `concat` helper instead of `+`.
Behaviour is unchanged.

Xcode 26.3 spent about a second type-checking `beginObserving()`'s
untyped Task closure. The Task is now typed and the loop body lives in
`pollOnce()`, which also stops the closure holding `self` across the
sleep between refreshes.

Review follow-ups on the engine, its store and the pieces around them:

- The retriever drops its cached lines whenever the engine's new data
generation moves (forget, delete all, never remember, settings, a
deleted or shortened document), and a lookup started before lands
nowhere, so a deleted message never reaches a prompt.
- Ingest and every removal or settings change share one write lock, so
an ingest filtered with old settings cannot restore a purged
  conversation.
- Indexing saves a message's vectors only if it is unchanged since it
was read, re-checks the schedule between native calls, and keeps only
messages embedded whole when it stops early.
- A re-read message that moved to another conversation or changed
owner is updated, and a conversation left empty is removed.
- Pointing the Documents Folder source at another folder forgets the
old folder's records and cursor, after stopping its sync.
- A mail reply's quote header is the first header of the whole field,
so header-like text after the caret in an inline reply is never read.
- The controller drops engine starts made stale by a stop or a newer
start, and stored memory can be deleted while memory is off.
- Playground results come from the newest search only; the engine's
status callback is read under its lock; the Full Disk Access text
names every source that needs it.

Review follow-ups on the source readers:

- Mail's .emlx map is rebuilt when mail newer than the map needs its
file, instead of living as long as the app and losing new mail.
- The Documents Folder reader reports notes read whole and the notes
still there, so edited-out paragraphs and deleted notes leave memory.
- A cloud drive or notes listing that could not read every account or
folder removes nothing, and a cloud file that could not be read
(offline) is tried again on the next sync instead of being left
  behind the cursor.
- With retention bounding the window, a calendar series with a change
is read whole, so a moved occurrence leaves memory.
- Teams maps each profile on its own and no longer guesses the user on
a tie (by who wrote more).
- LevelDB per-entry sequences wrap instead of trapping on a damaged
header, DocumentSections cuts a huge paragraph in linear time and
stops at the section limit, and the HxStore String helper is
  nonisolated.

Security review follow-ups.

Quote header: the parser now reads a header only where the mail
client puts it. The field is normalized first (line breaks, NFKC,
invisible format characters removed). Nothing above the caret may look
like a header or a quote, so inline replies and pasted headers give no
memory. The first header-like line after the caret must be one the
parser reads, at the quote boundary. An attribution or From line names
exactly one address. Quoted-printable or HTML remnants, or a second
header block right after the first, give none.

Cache: the data generation moves before any rows are removed, replaced
or moved (the store calls back) and again after. The retriever checks
it and reads or writes its caches inside the engine's
withDataGeneration, so a removal cannot begin between the check and
the write. A lookup keeps its result only if the generation is the one
read before it started. Caches are emptied while memory is off and are
keyed by the engine's instance id, so a new engine never serves an old
one's lines.

Every scope derived from a mail's body can be shaped by the other
person: their display name and text are part of the quote. So a mail
reply no longer gets conversation memory by parsing the body.

ConversationScopeResolver drops the quote-header parser and the
mail-subject path: Apple Mail and Outlook get no scope. The engine
drops the quoted-audience match (requiredParticipants, isSameAudience,
the own-address table and its ingest plumbing; an existing table is
dropped) and never resolves a title in a mail source. MailAudience
still isolates threads in the store, mail still syncs, and the
Playground can search it. Mail-reply memory waits for the compose
window's own To/Cc fields, which the sender cannot write.

- A whole number beyond Int's range in config.json stays a Double
(Int(exactly:)) instead of trapping at launch.
- FlatVectorIndex.remove moves the last row in place instead of passing
a slice of the buffer to its own replaceSubrange (a full copy per row).
- The document readers page by when a file changed or arrived (the later
of its modification and status-change times), so a file moved, renamed
or synced in with an old date is still read; records keep their own date.
- A corrupt Teams blob index beyond Int's range throws instead of trapping.
- Purge (and a whole-file re-read) removes the conversations and people it
empties, so an excluded person leaves no sealed name or tag behind.
- Index settings are clamped (overlap at most half a passage) in the pane
on every edit and before they are applied.

The cloud cursor follows a file's later modification or status-change time,
so a file moved or renamed in with an old date still arrives. But reading an
online-only file downloads it and gives it back, and giving it back moves the
status-change time past the cursor: every sync on AC would download it again.

The cursor now also keeps (hashed) the files this reader read while they were
online-only. While such a file is still online-only, only its modification
time counts, so an edit brings it back and our own eviction does not. Every
other file keeps the arrival rule, including one moved or renamed in (a new
id). Cursors written before stay readable. The test fakes the file attributes,
since File Provider placeholders cannot be made in a test.

Every memory sync decoded and parsed the whole HxStore.hxd, then kept the
few messages inside the two-day look-back. On a real 276 MB store
(45,731 records) that took 16 to 58 s of a full core at launch and every
15 minutes on AC power, to add no mail.

- HxStoreScanCache keeps, per stretch of the file, a digest of its bytes
and what reading it gave: a record's block and the fields needed to
pick each message's fullest version, or a gap with the offsets whose
header looked plausible. The next scan reuses a stretch only where the
bytes digest the same at the same offset, and tries a gap's plausible
headers again (a record Outlook was still writing can complete past
later records), so the result is a full scan's whatever Outlook
  rewrote. Digests are a seeded 4-lane xxHash64 round (about 10 GB/s);
the cache lives in memory only (48 bytes per segment).
- Bodies are converted only for messages sent after the cursor's
look-back (sentAfter), not for the whole mailbox.
- Memory syncs run at background priority, on the efficiency cores.
Measured on a drive catching up, reading was as fast as at utility.
- "Outlook store scanned" is logged with records, reuse and seconds.

On the real store the first scan took 11.7 s and the next 0.6 s, reusing
45,517 of 45,753 records (98% of the bytes).

Not done: skipping the scan when the file's size and modification time
are unchanged. A write through a shared mapping updates the modification
time only when it is flushed, so that could miss new mail.

Tests: an incremental scan equals a full scan after records are added at
the end, rewritten in place, written into a gap, cut off and completed,
completed past later records, and after the file shrinks or is replaced;
an unchanged file decodes nothing; a future time becomes a send time once
plausible; sentAfter; the digest. Checked by breaking the digest check
and the gap recheck: each made tests fail.
On a real Google Drive (3,905 documents, 3,199 online-only) each sync
read about 350 unchanged files, downloading each, for 5 to 8 minutes of
CPU and network until its run budget ran out, then did it again.

- A file the reader has seen before changes only when it is modified. Its
status-change time also moves whenever its content is downloaded or
given back (by this reader, the user, or the drive freeing space) and
when the drive updates its records: 3,523 of the 3,905 files had a
status-change time within a day, all with old modification times. A
file not seen before still arrives by its status-change time, so one
moved in with an old date is read. The cursor keeps the last complete
listing as 8-byte SHA-256 prefixes in one base64 string; a cursor
without it takes the current listing, so the update does not read the
whole drive again. This replaces the list of files the reader gave
back, which covered only its own evictions.
- A file read with no text in it (a scanned or locked PDF, an empty file)
is done until it changes. It was retried on every sync like a file that
could not be read: 138 such files cost about 150 s per sync, each
downloaded and parsed again. DocumentTextExtractor.extract tells text,
no text, and unreadable (with the error, for the log) apart.
- A sync whose last page reads nothing still hands its earlier pages'
failures to the next sync; they waited forever before.
- A file the drive still holds right after the read ("in use") is given
back again a moment later; 4 of 138 evictions failed that way and left
  the download behind.
- The cloud drive and Documents readers list their folders once per
sync: liveConversationIDs reuses the listing the read just took.
- "Cloud drive read" is logged with files listed, read, without text,
  unreadable (with errors) and retried.

Measured on the real drive: Google Drive went from 325 to 470 s per sync
to 0 s (after one sync reading the 138 text-less files once more), iCloud
Drive from 6 to 7 s to 1 to 2 s, Documents from 4 to 5 s to 1 s.

📝 Walkthrough

Conversation Memory is added as an optional local feature. It reads supported sources, stores encrypted records, indexes them on-device, exposes settings and search, and supplies snippets to local suggestion engines. Endpoint engines suppress memory context. Calendar entitlements and application signing flows are updated.

Changes: Conversation Memory

Layer / File(s) Summary
Memory contracts and processing
Cotabby/Models/Memory/*, Cotabby/Support/Memory/*
Adds memory models, source descriptors, text processing, document extraction, calendar formatting, and embedding scheduling.
Encrypted storage and indexing
Cotabby/Services/Memory/Store/*, Cotabby/Services/Memory/Embedding/*, Cotabby/Services/Memory/Index/*, patches/cotabbyinference-upstream-pending.patch
Adds encrypted SQLite storage, vector search, embedding coordination, and the native embedding engine.
Source readers and synchronization
Cotabby/Services/Memory/Readers/*, Cotabby/Services/Memory/MemoryHistorySync.swift
Adds readers for supported local sources, cursor-based synchronization, readiness reporting, and cancellation handling.
Engine and retrieval lifecycle
Cotabby/Services/Memory/MemoryEngine.swift, Cotabby/Services/Memory/MemoryEngineController.swift, Cotabby/Services/Memory/MemoryRetriever.swift
Adds engine startup, shutdown, indexing, scoped search, model management, encrypted-key handling, and cached retrieval.
Suggestion integration
Cotabby/Support/Suggestion/Request/*, Cotabby/Support/Prompting/*, Cotabby/App/Coordinators/Suggestion/*, Cotabby/App/Core/CotabbyAppEnvironment.swift
Passes memory snippets to local suggestion requests and suppresses them for endpoint engines.
Settings and application wiring
Cotabby/UI/Settings/Panes/Memory/*, Cotabby/UI/Settings/Settings*.swift, Cotabby/App/Coordinators/SettingsCoordinator.swift
Adds the Memory settings category, source and privacy controls, indexing statistics, playground search, permissions, and dependency wiring.
Validation and documentation
CotabbyTests/Services/Memory/*, CotabbyTests/Support/Memory/*, README.md, ARCHITECTURE.md, AGENTS.md
Adds tests, fixtures, architecture documentation, privacy rules, source-layout entries, and licensing information.

Code signing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Entitlement configuration and signing
Cotabby/Cotabby.entitlements, project.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/kickstart.sh, scripts/sign_local_app.py
Enables calendar access for the app target and passes the entitlement file when signing the top-level application.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9f4be

Conversation memory is a large new opt-in feature. Quitting the app can begin process exit while the embedding model is still loaded, which risks a crash on exit. The privacy "never remember" lists cannot be filled in by typing. Restarting memory quickly can briefly load two copies of the model. Some Teams messages and non-UTF-8 notes can be silently left out of memory. Fix the shutdown ordering and the privacy editor before merging.

P1 Updated mail can stay skipped

ScanPass decodes a record and builds its summary before hashing the mapped bytes. If Outlook rewrites the record between those steps, the cache pairs the old summary with the new bytes' digest. Later scans then reuse that stale summary.

A record changed from an old send time to a recent one can remain excluded by sentAfter until another write or an app restart. Hash before decoding and verify the bytes again afterward. Cache the result only when both hashes match.

P1 New files download repeatedly

An intermediate page saves the incoming seen set without adding the new files it just read. When a new online-only file is downloaded and given back, its status-change time moves forward. The next page lists it again, still treats it as unseen, and downloads it again.

A large batch can keep cycling through these files across pages and saved cursors. Add each attempted file to seen before saving an intermediate cursor, while keeping unreadable files in the retry sets.

P2 Partial listings forget seen files

The ending cursor replaces seen with listed even when listing.isComplete is false. The empty-page path does the same. If an account or folder is temporarily unreadable, this forgets that its files were already seen.

When the folder returns, unchanged files whose status-change times moved past the cursor are treated as new and downloaded again. Preserve the earlier seen keys on incomplete listings, and replace the set only after a complete listing.

OutlookHistoryReader marks classic Outlook messages as the user's own when Message_IsOutgoingMessage = 1; it does not require Sent-mailbox membership. Narrow this sentence or document Outlook's outgoing flag as a source-specific exception in AGENTS.md.

Wait for the embedding model to unload before exit().

memoryController.stop() returns a Task<Void, Never>, but applicationWillTerminate discards it. MemoryEngine.stop() unloads the EmbeddingCore model inside that task. The embedding context can still be live when runtimeModel.shutdownSync and exit() run.

Discard out-of-date conversation loads.

loadConversations writes every result to playgroundConversations. It does not check whether that result is still the newest request. The Playground calls loadConversations each time sourceID changes. neverRemember also calls it with the old conversation.source. Suppose the user switches the source picker while an earlier load is still running. The earlier result can then finish last and replace the list for the newly selected source. The picker then lists conversations from the wrong source until the user changes the source again. Use the same generation guard that runSearch uses.

Make the next start() wait for the previous engine to stop.

The comment on Lines 42-43 says two engines never run or hold the store at once. stop() breaks that rule:

  • stop() sets startTask = nil.
  • stop() returns a detached task that calls engine?.stop() and awaits the pending start.
  • start() reads previous = startTask on Line 199. After a stop, that value is nil.
  • restart() and a quick setEnabled(false) → setEnabled(true) therefore start a new MemoryEngine without waiting.

The new engine can run beside the old engine while the old engine is still unloading, or beside a stale start that is still building its engine. Each engine opens MemoryStore on messages.sqlite and loads the 0.64 GB embedding model. During that overlap, two models stay resident, and a cancelled indexing loop can still write vectors.

deleteMemoryData() already awaits stop(). Give start() the same ordering. Store the stop task and await it in start().

Mask the blob subdirectory to one byte, as Chromium does.

Chromium names a blob's directory from the second byte of the blob number only. GetBlobDirectoryNameForKey formats (blob_number & 0xff00) >> 8 with %02x. This code formats blobNumber >> 8 without the mask, and that value grows past one byte. For blob number 0x10005, Chromium uses .../00/10005 and this code builds .../100/10005.

As a result, readFile returns nil and blobContents throws missingBlob. forEachValue then counts the record as undecodable and skips it. Large reply chains are stored as blobs, and blob numbers grow over time in a long-used Teams profile. Long-time users therefore lose messages from memory without any notice.

%02x with a UInt64 argument also depends on how varargs are laid out. The mask removes that dependency.

Decode entities in one pass so the output is the same on every launch.

decodeEntities iterates over the named dictionary. Swift seeds dictionary iteration order randomly for each process. Input < therefore becomes < on some launches and < on others. The result depends on whether & is replaced before or after <. The numeric pass then decodes the output of the named pass a second time, so < always becomes <.

This matters in the store. MemoryStore.upsert detects an unchanged message by text_tag, which is a tag of the body text. If the body text changes between launches, an unchanged mail counts as edited. The store then rewrites it and drops its vectors and terms, and indexing runs again.

A second defect is in the same function. The pattern accepts hex digits for decimal references. On input such as &#12ab;, UInt32(..., radix: 10) fails. The code then writes nothing, so the reference is deleted instead of being left as written.

The list editors remove Return and trailing spaces while the user types.

The TextEditor setter splits the text on \n, trims whitespace and removes empty lines on each keystroke. The getter then joins the result again. Two failures follow:

  • The user types Return after "alice". The setter receives "alice\n" and stores ["alice"]. The editor shows "alice" again. The user cannot start a second line.
  • The user types a space after "John". The space is trimmed at once, so the user cannot type "John Smith" in "Never remember people".

The UI tells the user to enter "one id per line" and "names or addresses, one per line". Typing cannot do this. Only pasting works. These fields control privacy exclusions, so this blocks a privacy workflow. SuggestionRequestFactory documents the same problem: "trimming on every keystroke would prevent the user from typing a space".

Keep the raw text in @State while the user edits. Convert it to the list when the user presses Apply.

🐛 Proposed fix (store raw text while editing, normalize on Apply)

Then keep @State strings for the conversation and participant texts. Seed them from savedPrivacy on first appearance. In the Apply action, split, trim and filter both strings, then call control.updatePrivacy.

Update `listField` so `TextEditor` binds directly to raw `String` state instead
of splitting, trimming, and filtering on each keystroke. Keep separate editable
text state for the conversation and participant lists, initialize it from
`savedPrivacy`, and normalize each string into a list only when Apply calls
`control.updatePrivacy`.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Move the memory-mail-amount-01 case off a mail bundle.

This case sets bundleIdentifier to com.apple.mail and injects memorySnippets. In production, a mail field never gets memory. ConversationScopeResolver.scope returns nil for every entry in mailBundleIdentifiers, and test_aMailReplyWithAPerfectQuoteHeaderGetsNoMemory confirms this behavior. As a result, the recall suite scores a prompt shape that users never receive, and the memory recall rate does not match real behavior.

Use a bundle that can carry memory, such as Teams or WhatsApp. If the goal is to keep a mail-shaped case for the future To/Cc scope, tag it so that it is reported separately.

+ "applicationName": "Microsoft Teams",
+ "bundleIdentifier": "com.microsoft.teams2",
+ "precedingText": "Thanks for confirming. As agreed, the monthly fee for the pilot will be ",

Based on learnings: "A mail gets no conversation scope … Mail scope waits for the compose window's own To/Cc fields."

Update the memory-mail-amount-01 fixture to use a memory-capable application and
bundle, such as Microsoft Teams, and remove the mail-specific greeting from
precedingText so the case reflects a prompt users can actually receive. If
retaining a mail-shaped case for future To/Cc scope support, tag it for separate
reporting instead.

Replace try? and force unwraps with throwing XCTUnwrap.

Line 120 discards the XCTUnwrap failure with try?. Line 123 then force-unwraps memory! and caret!. Suppose the renderer stops emitting the "Earlier in this conversation" section. The test then traps and does not fail cleanly. A trap in the app-hosted runner stops the test run, so the remaining tests do not report.

Update test_memorySectionSitsInTheBasePromptAboveTheCaretText to throw, and use
throwing XCTUnwrap calls for both the memory-section range and the caret range.
Remove try? and force unwraps so missing prompt text fails the test cleanly.
