A message stayed stuck forever when the app was closed while it was being sent, for example during an attachment upload. A stored message keeps its state, so it came back still sending. Only failed messages get retried, and the user can't long-press a message that is still sending, so there was no way to retry or delete it. An edit or delete cut off the same way stayed stuck too.

Fixes FLU-1136.

Sending an image on a slow connection, closing the app mid-upload, then reopening it (sample app, Android):

While uploading Before: after reopening After: after reopening

What changed (stream_chat)

When a channel's state is created, the messages it starts with are checked, including stored thread replies:

  • A message still sending or deleting is marked as failed to send or delete, so the existing retry sends it again. Re-sending is safe because message ids are created on the client, and a send the server already stored is marked sent.
  • A message still updating is marked updated, and the server's copy replaces it on the next fetch. It isn't retried, because a pin or unpin is also an update and a full update would send the wrong change.

Nothing in this channel can be in flight yet at that point. Later updates are untouched, so a request still running in this session is never marked failed. Nothing is copied unless a message needs converting.

How it was verified

  • channel_interrupted_requests_test.dart:
    • sending and deleting are marked failed, and deleting keeps its scope;
    • updating is marked updated and isn't sent again;
    • messages with nothing in progress stay as they are;
    • a stored thread reply and a channel message left sending are sent again.
  • Breaking each conversion fails a test.
  • The stream_chat (2,057) and stream_chat_flutter_core (406) suites pass. stream_chat_flutter passes apart from the local macOS goldens.
  • Android emulator against the real backend: before, the message stayed at "Uploaded 0 of 1" after reopening. After, it was re-uploaded and sent once.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Messages interrupted by app closure no longer remain stuck in sending, updating, or deleting states. Sending and deleting messages are marked as failed, while updates are settled as complete.
    • Interrupted sending messages can be retried, including messages in threads.

Walkthrough

Channel initialization now normalizes persisted messages left in sending, updating, or deleting states. Sending messages become failed and remain eligible for retry; updates settle as updated, and deletions become failed while retaining their scope.

Changes: Interrupted message requests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize persisted message states
packages/stream_chat/lib/src/client/channel/channel_client_state.dart, packages/stream_chat/test/src/client/channel/channel_interrupted_requests_test.dart, packages/stream_chat/CHANGELOG.md
Channel messages and loaded thread replies are normalized during initialization. Sending messages become failed with retries enabled, updating messages become updated, and deleting messages become failed with their existing scope. Tests cover these states, unchanged messages, and the absence of update requests for messages settled as updated.
Retry interrupted sends
packages/stream_chat/test/src/client/channel/channel_interrupted_requests_test.dart
Tests verify that stored sending channel messages and thread replies are sent again. The thread test checks the resulting reply state.

Recovery has bounded edge cases: retries can lose notification preferences, reopening a disposed channel can issue an extra request, and an interrupted edit can be announced as sent without confirmation. These warrant owner awareness and follow-up, but no broad delivery failure or data loss is established.

Explanation

The title names the main change: a fix that retries messages whose requests were interrupted when the app closed, which matches the objectives and the channel_client_state.dart changes. It uses the conventional commit form with the scope and ticket reference. It does not name the specific status conversions (sending, updating, deleting), but it is still a clear summary of the primary change.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Avoid a second send when a dispose interrupts a live request.

A send writes Sending to the channel state before its network call. If the debounced persistence write fires before dispose(), the store keeps that Sending message. ChannelClientState.dispose() cancels only a write that has not fired, and Channel.dispose() does not cancel the in-flight sendMessage call. A later query(preferOffline: true, watch: false) rebuilds the state from the stored message. The new constructor marks it sendingFailed, and retryFailedMessages() queues it. sendMessage has no in-flight check, so a second request with the same message ID can run while the first is still pending.

This needs the first request to stay pending past the 1-second persistence debounce. The duplicate-ID rejection is handled as a completed retry, so the likely cost is one redundant request.

54-64: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a test for an interrupted deletion retried on initialization.

The deletion test at channel_interrupted_requests_test.dart:54-64 checks only the deletingFailed state and its scope. The sibling test "sends a message left sending again" verifies the retry call, but no test verifies a delete call for a stored deletion. Add a test that:

  • Uses MockStreamChatClientWithPersistence and stubs getChannelThreads, as the sibling tests do. The retry runs only after that call resolves.
  • Stores a message in deleting state with remoteCreatedAt set. A message without remoteCreatedAt is deleted locally and makes no endpoint call. The _message helper does not set this field, so the test must pass it.
  • Stubs the delete endpoint and verifies the call uses the original scope.

Keep the original send options when an interrupted send is retried.

_failInterruptedRequests sets skipPush: false and skipEnrichUrl: false for every interrupted send. The Sending state stores neither option. A send made with skipPush: true that is interrupted and then retried after restart sends a push notification. Persist the send options with the outgoing state, or restore them before the retry.

Why no edit is proposed

A localized edit is not established. Preserving the options needs a change to the OutgoingState.sending model and its serialization, not a one-line change in channel_client_state.dart.

Valid, but out of scope for this PR. The Sending state doesn't keep skipPush or skipEnrichUrl, so keeping them through a restart means changing the outgoing state model and how it's stored. The case is narrow (a skipPush send interrupted by the app being killed), so I'm leaving it as is.

@xsahil03x Understood. I accept deferring send-option persistence outside this PR. The finding remains valid, but I will not press for a change here.

Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for preserving skipPush and skipEnrichUrl across interrupted sends?
