test(azure): pin Advisor pricing to the parent context and the lookup term - #668
Follow-up to #663 (merged at 6111142). Test-only follow-up to the cold reviews and CodeRabbit on #663 (head 1972235); no production code changes.
TestGetRecommendations_AdvisorPricingUsesParentContext: the Advisor price lookup fake fails on a done context. A priceAdvisor(gctx, ...) mutation at recommendations.go:228 survived the feat(azure): price Advisor reservations through the Pricer, then stamp CommitmentCurrency #663 tests, because the fakes ignored ctx. With this test it fails: after errgroup Wait gctx is canceled, so in production every Advisor reservation row would be skipped.
TestPriceAdvisorReservations_ThreeYearRowIsPricedForThreeYears: fakePrices records the term it receives. A 3yr row must reach the lookup as 3, and its monthly leg must be total/36 (CodeRabbit, recommendations_advisor_pricing_test.go:22). A mutation that forces term 1 fails it.
Both tests pass on #663 code; go build, go vet and go test -count=1 ./... in providers/azure pass.
This change adds Azure Advisor pricing tests. The tests check pricing with a context that remains usable after recommendation collection and verify the requested three-year term and resulting costs.
The context test checks for two recommendations, USD currency, and a positive commitment cost. The pricing fake records requested terms, and the three-year test checks the term and upfront and monthly costs.
This test-only change is mergeable with a bounded coverage follow-up: verify parent-context propagation so future pricing changes cannot silently detach from the caller.

providers/azure/recommendations_advisor_cover_test.go:172 (nit): the require message says "no skip recorded", but under the gctx mutation the failure is an error returned from GetRecommendations (the lookup's ctx error is treated as a catalog failure), not a recorded skip. The assertion is still right; only the wording is off.
providers/azure/recommendations_advisor_pricing_test.go:176: the total/36 check uses literals (unit 360 x count 2 = 720, 720/36 = 20) and does not derive the value from the code under test. The forced-term-1 mutation is caught by the terms == [3] assertion at :172, not by this one, because the monthly divisor reads years separately (internal/recommendations/consumption.go ExpandConsumptionVariants). Both assertions are needed, and both are present.
Is the setup a real failure mode? Yes. errgroup.WithContext cancels gctx the first time Wait returns, and recommendations.go:221 calls g.Wait() before pricing at :228. So any ctx-honouring lookup (a real HTTP call) fails on gctx even when no sibling returns an error. The fake's ctx.Err() check models exactly that.
attacked:
GOWORK=off go vet ./... && go test -count=1 ./... from providers/azure: clean.
Baseline: both new tests pass.
M1 priceAdvisor(gctx, ...) at recommendations.go:228: AdvisorPricingUsesParentContext FAILS at cover_test.go:172 (unexpected error).
M1 plus the ctx check removed from the fake (control): the test PASSES. So the failure comes from the ctx check and is not incidental.
M2 UnitPrice forced to term 1 in ExpandConsumptionVariants: ThreeYearRow FAILS at pricing_test.go:172 (expected [3], actual [1]).
M3 monthly divisor years*12 changed to 12: ThreeYearRow FAILS at pricing_test.go:176 (expected 20, actual 60).
All mutations ran in a scratch clone and were reverted; the tree was confirmed clean afterwards.
The errgroup context is canceled once Wait returns, so pricing Advisor rows
with it would skip every row. Fake lookups ignored ctx, so that mutation
survived; this one fails when its ctx is done.

No Advisor pricing test priced a three-year row, so passing a fixed term
to the lookup went unnoticed. Record the term in the fake and assert a
3yr row is priced for 3 years with its monthly leg over 36 months.

Against main 6111142, the PR is 2 commits ahead, 0 behind, MERGEABLE. It changes only providers/azure/recommendations_advisor_cover_test.go and providers/azure/recommendations_advisor_pricing_test.go.
The probe results from my review at 67ffba5 carry over unchanged, because the tree is identical.
I reviewed this cold on exports of 1e3446f and its parent 6111142 (main after #663), treating the PR body as a claim. The diff is test-only: two new tests, plus fakePrices now recording the term it receives. In providers/azure with GOWORK=off and no cloud credentials, go vet ./... and go test -count=1 ./... pass at 1e3446f.
Mutation probes
Each probe was a single-line edit on a fresh export of the head and of the parent. I ran the full azure module suite after each one.
killed, only by TestGetRecommendations_AdvisorPricingUsesParentContext
survives: whole suite green
M2: the lookup always gets term 1 (consumption.go:274, years becomes 1)
killed by TestPriceAdvisorReservations_ThreeYearRowIsPricedForThreeYears, plus the existing ThreeYearUpfrontExceedsOneYear and ConsumptionUnits tests
killed by the existing tests
M3: the monthly leg divides by 12 instead of years*12 (consumption.go:298)
killed by the new three-year test, plus the same existing tests
killed by the existing tests
The surviving mutant from feat(azure): price Advisor reservations through the Pricer, then stamp CommitmentCurrency #663 is closed. The new context test fails with M1 for the reason it states: once g.Wait returns, gctx is canceled, the context-aware fake returns an error, and the row is recorded as a skip. It is also the only test that kills M1. The parent's suite lets M1 survive.
The three-year test adds less. M2 and M3 already died on the parent, because Advisor rows are priced through the shared ExpandConsumptionVariants. The new test is still worth keeping: it pins the Advisor entry point (priceAdvisorReservations) to the term it passes and checks the monthly amount, 720 over 36 months. It builds its row with Term: "3yr" directly, so it does not cover the conversion from Advisor's term into that field (that conversion is advisorTerm).
About "fails on its parent". No production code changed, so both new tests pass against the parent's production code by construction, as the PR body says. Each new test's failure is shown against the mutant it targets (table above).
Checked
No t.Parallel() on the context test. That is correct: advisorOnlyAdapter swaps the global service-client hooks through overrideServiceClientFns. The pricing-level test uses its own fakePrices, so t.Parallel() is safe there.
The new terms slice in fakePrices.fakePrices is created fresh per test and never shared across parallel subtests, so appending to terms without a lock is safe.
All checks pass except Run pre-commit hooks. That job is red only at its runner-side Install Trivy step: the v0.69.3 install.sh exits 6 before any hook runs. A rerun failed the same way. Main at 6111142 fails at the same step (run 41730940858), so this diff does not cause it. The merge still waits for that job to go green.
No findings.
Addendum: the new tests against their parent
I exported the parent 6111142, copied in the head's two test files, and ran the new tests by name. A recursive diff against an untouched parent export confirmed which non-test files changed in each tree.

Each new test fails on its parent once the bug it targets is reintroduced, and passes on the unchanged parent. Each test is specific to its own bug: the context test prices a 1yr row, and the 3yr test calls priceAdvisorReservations directly, so it never goes through the fan-out. A clean-parent failure is not possible here, because #668 changes no production code.
CI update: Run pre-commit hooks failed at Install Trivy again on attempt 3. That step needs a repo-side fix before the merge.
Make the parent-context test fail when pricing uses context.Background().
The new test passes context.Background() as its parent and never cancels it. Its fake fails only on a canceled context, so a priceAdvisor call that uses context.Background() at recommendations.go:228 also passes. The gctx regression is caught, but this one is not.
Attach a value to the parent and require the lookup to receive it. This fails immediately if the lookup does not inherit the parent, and it cannot hang. A blocking fake that waits on ctx.Done() would hang under this regression unless its wait is bounded.
