Fixes the mid-width layout problems in #1682, reproduced in Chromium on the mocked production bundle.
Width / page
Seen
Fix
~915px, all pages
Sidebar stays at full width (232px). Its icon-only collapse only applied at ≤900px, so the Plans table showed 4 of 12 columns before the sticky Actions column
Icon-only sidebar up to 1100px (layout.css). The topbar brand rule moves from min-width: 901px to 1101px to match
780–915px, topbar
Chip values wrap ("All / Providers") inside the fixed-height chip
Chips are nowrap. From 769px to 1100px they drop the visible "Provider:" / "Account:" prefix (the chip keeps it as its aria-label) and truncate the value with an ellipsis if still short of room
Plans, RI Exchange: sticky Actions column
Columns behind the pinned column had only an 8px, 8% shadow, which is easy to miss
Edge hint is 16px at 18% on both sticky sides (tables.css). The #703 design is kept: columns still scroll under the pinned Actions column
Not changed, with evidence
~535px /purchases: did not reproduce at a true 535px CSS viewport. The sidebar is off-canvas behind the hamburger, history rows reflow into cards, and nothing is clipped or scrolls sideways (the page-overflow spec also passes at 390px and 768px). The QA window was most likely zoomed, so its CSS width was wider than the reported viewport.
…hips, visible scroll hint
- The sidebar goes icon-only up to 1100px instead of 900px. At about
915px the full rail took 232px and left the Plans table four columns.
- Topbar chips no longer wrap ("All / Providers" overflowed the
fixed-height chip). From 769px to 1100px they drop the visible
"Provider:" / "Account:" prefix, which stays as each chip's
aria-label, and truncate the value if still short of room.
- The sticky-column edge hint is 16px at 18% instead of 8px at 8%, so
columns hidden behind a pinned Actions column are noticeable.

Walkthrough
The responsive layout now collapses the sidebar through 1100px, adjusts top-bar branding and filter-chip behavior from 769px to 1100px, and widens sticky-column edge hints. Playwright tests cover sidebar widths, chip overflow, and the table scroll hint.

Summary
Sidebar and top-bar responsive behavior frontend/src/styles/layout.css, frontend/src/styles/shell.css, frontend/tests-e2e/narrow-width-layout.spec.ts
The sidebar collapses through 1100px. At widths from 769px through 1100px, filter chips can shrink, hide labels, and truncate values. Top-bar chip text does not wrap. Tests check sidebar widths and chip layout at several viewport widths.
The sticky-column edge fades widen from 8px to 16px and use a stronger text-color mix. A test checks the planned-purchases table’s right-side scroll hint.
Long account names can overflow the topbar instead of truncating. The remaining risk is localized visual disruption; merging is reasonable with owner awareness and a follow-up to constrain chip widths.

Explanation
The title says the PR fixes mid-width layout with three parts: an icon-only sidebar, one-line topbar chips, and a visible scroll hint. The raw summary and objectives match all three. The sidebar collapse breakpoint moves to 1100px, topbar chips no longer wrap, and the sticky-column edge fades are widened to 16px. The title is specific and names the main changes, though it is long at 94 characters.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The changes implement the coding objectives in [#1682]. layout.css makes the sidebar icon-only through 1100px. shell.css prevents chip wrapping and truncates mid-width values. tables.css increases the sticky-column edge hint to 16px at 18% opacity. The new Playwright tests cover the sidebar, chip overflow, document overflow, and sticky hint at the affected widths. The existing 535px /purchases behavior is reported as already reflowing with the sidebar in the drawer, so no additional change is required for that case.

535px /purchases: the PR's "did not reproduce" holds. At a true 535px viewport the sidebar is the off-canvas drawer, and the page doesn't scroll sideways on main or head. Tables, the sticky topbar and modals show no regression at any measured width.
Findings
The sidebar toggle is a dead control from 901 to 1100px, and its aria-expanded is wrong there (frontend/src/styles/layout.css:186). The widened @media (max-width: 1100px) rule forces width: var(--cudly-sidebar-w-collapsed) and hides .sidebar-label without regard to the .collapsed class. But the hamburger (frontend/src/index.ts:68-72) only toggles .collapsed and aria-expanded. Measured at 1024px:
head: 64 → click → 64 → click → 64, while aria-expanded still flips true → false → true.
So on a 1024px laptop the user can no longer expand the rail to read the section names, the button does nothing visible, and a screen reader hears "expanded" while the rail is collapsed. The same behaviour already existed at ≤900px on main; this PR extends it to 901–1100px.
Suggested direction, author's call: make the auto-collapse a default the user can override. For example, have the toggle set an explicit state class (.expanded / .collapsed) that the 769–1100px rule respects (.app-sidebar:not(.expanded)), and derive aria-expanded from the effective width rather than the class alone. Plus a Playwright case at 1024px: click the toggle, expect 232px and aria-expanded="true".
Nits (non-blocking)
frontend/src/styles/responsive.css:182 and :190 still describe "the 900px icon-only collapse"; it's now 1100px.
Hiding .chip-select-label leaves the self-describing values ("All Providers" / "All Accounts"), and the trigger's aria-label (src/lib/chip-select.ts:88) is unchanged, so the chips stay understandable. No change needed.
The test sidebar keeps its labels at 1280px asserts only the 232px sidebar width. The 915px and 1100px tests check that labels are hidden. No test checks label visibility at 1280px, so a CSS change that hides .app-sidebar .sidebar-label at this width would still pass.

The chip loop checks line count, bounds, and height. No assertion checks .chip-select-label, which the 769–1100px rule hides. Without a direct check, removing that rule can pass the loop unless the restored prefix also changes layout. Add a visibility check for the label in the same loop.

Exercise and assert long-value truncation in the topbar account chip.
The chip loop in this spec checks only the default values, All Providers and All Accounts. The default account chip value is short, so the checks do not reach the truncation path. The spec does not read text-overflow, scrollWidth, or clientWidth on .chip-select-value. If the text-overflow: ellipsis rule for .app-topbar .chip-select-value is removed, this spec still passes.
Add a case that loads /plans with a long account in the account URL parameter. Then assert that the value box clips its content (scrollWidth > clientWidth) and that its computed text-overflow is ellipsis. This case covers the truncation behavior that the mid-width rule adds.

The test sticky Actions column shows a visible hint checks only the ::before opacity and width. A gradient that became fully transparent would still pass. On this table, the gradient is the only edge indicator on the sticky side, so a transparent gradient would remove the hint without failing the test. Add an assertion on the pseudo-element's computed background-image. Check that it is a linear-gradient whose first color stop is not fully transparent.

The 1100px icon-only rule forced the collapsed width in CSS, so between
901px and 1100px the toggle flipped aria-expanded but the sidebar stayed
at 64px. The collapsed state now lives in one class set by JS: up to
1100px the sidebar starts collapsed and the toggle expands it for the
session; wider, the stored preference applies as before. aria-expanded
is set from the same state.
With a stored collapsed preference, the phone drawer opened at 64px
without labels. It now always opens at full width.

Cold review: claude-ui-fix-1, head 2416f937b8f4db5ceba5b8ad95fa6190bad99ef1
Verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED (1 finding)
I treated the PR body as a claim and checked the CSS against every rule and script tied to the old 900/901px breakpoint, then drove the built bundle in Playwright on mocked data.
Finding 1 (blocking): the sidebar toggle does nothing between 901px and 1100px, and its state is wrong there
frontend/src/index.ts:58-73: the desktop .app-sidebar-toggle only adds or removes .collapsed and flips aria-expanded. The new @media (max-width: 1100px) rule (frontend/src/styles/layout.css:186-193) forces the icon-only width and hides .sidebar-label regardless of .collapsed, so the toggle cannot expand the rail anywhere up to 1100px.
Probe at this SHA: at 1024px a click leaves the sidebar at 64px but changes aria-expanded from true to false. A second click sets true again while the rail stays collapsed. At 1280px the same click works (232px to 64px). On main the dead zone was 769-900px; this PR extends it to 769-1100px. That range includes 1024px, where users of the toggle could expand the labels before.
The links keep their aria-label, so screen readers still get names. Sighted users get icons with no title and a visible control that does nothing.
Possible fixes, author's choice: apply the forced collapse only when the user has not expanded the rail (for example an .expanded class the toggle sets in this range, so the toggle overrides the default), or hide the toggle between 769px and 1100px as responsive.css already does below 769px. Either way, aria-expanded should match what is on screen. A spec asserting the toggle's effect at 1024px would pin it.
Checked, no finding
New spec fails on main. With layout.css, shell.css and tables.css swapped for origin/main's and the bundle rebuilt, 5 tests fail: icon-only at 915 and 1100, chips on one line at 780 and 915, and the sticky hint. The 2 guards pass (labels at 1280, chips at 1100). This matches the PR's table. I restored the tree and checked it was clean afterwards.
Widths 390, 768, 900, 1024, 1440 on Home, Opportunities, Plans and Purchases: the document never scrolls sideways (scrollWidth - innerWidth is 0 in all 20 cases), and the topbar stays pinned at top 0 after scrolling. The sidebar is 64px at 900 and 1024 and 232px at 1440. At 390 and 768 it is the off-canvas drawer. Screenshots were checked by eye at 900 and 1024.
Modals. The plan modal (opened on mocked data, never submitted) fits the viewport at 390 (16-374), 900 (23-878) and 1024 (26-998).
535px. I did not probe exactly 535px. 390px and 768px both show the drawer with no overflow, which is consistent with the PR's "did not reproduce".
Breakpoint consistency. The topbar brand rule moved to min-width: 1101px, and the chip rules cover 769px-1100px. MOBILE_NAV_QUERY is still (max-width: 768px) (frontend/src/nav/mobile-nav.ts:18), so there is no gap or overlap. Nit: the comments in responsive.css:182,190 still say "900px collapse".
Sticky edge hint. It is 16px at 18% on both sides, and the start-side and end-side offsets moved together.
Verification (local, macOS, at this SHA, in a scratch worktree)
npm ci, npm test (182 suites, 4714 passed, 1 skipped), npm run lint (0 errors), npm run build: pass.
Full Playwright suite on the production bundle with CI=1: 306 passed.
A temporary probe spec (25 tests, not committed) covered the widths, the modal and the toggle.
What I attacked: every rule and script coupled to the old breakpoint, the toggle and its persisted state, the drawer handoff at 768/769, overflow on four pages at five widths, the modal bounds, and the fail-before.
With white-space: nowrap, a long selected account name kept its full
width: the value had no min-width: 0, and above 1100px no rule bounded
it, so the chip ran past its root. The value now truncates with an
ellipsis at every topbar width, capped at 16rem. Between 769px and
1100px the chips still drop their visible prefix.
The spec also checks that labels show at 1280px and that the chip
prefix is hidden at mid widths.

New head 4117532 addresses both cold reviews and CodeRabbit:
Reviewer blocker (claude-as-qa-2, claude-ui-fix-1): the sidebar toggle was dead from 901px to 1100px, and aria-expanded was wrong there. Fixed in fb37d13. The collapsed state is now one class set by JS. Up to 1100px the sidebar starts icon-only and the toggle expands it for the session; wider, the stored preference applies as before. aria-expanded is set from the same state. New Playwright cases toggle twice at 1024px and 1280px and assert the width and aria-expanded after each click. The 1024px case failed at 2416f93.
Drawer (found while fixing): with a stored collapsed preference, the phone drawer opened at 64px without labels, which was already the case on main. It now always opens at full width. A Playwright case at 600px covers it.
CodeRabbit actionable x2: long chip values now truncate at every width (4117532); details are on the threads.
CodeRabbit nitpicks: added the 1280px label-visible and mid-width prefix-hidden assertions, and the long-value truncation case. Not done: asserting the hint gradient's first colour stop. The test already pins the hint's opacity (1) and width (16px), and color-mix serializes differently across Chromium versions, so a colour-stop assertion would be brittle.
Local verification on macOS at this head: jest 4714 passed and 1 skipped, lint 0 errors, build ok, full Playwright on the production bundle (CI=1) 311 passed.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

I re-reviewed the delta 2416f937..41175322 (fb37d13a, 41175322) cold, driving the built bundle in Playwright on mocked data.
Finding from the previous round: resolved
index.ts now owns the collapsed state: apply() sets .collapsed and aria-expanded together, and the 1100px CSS collapse is gone. A probe at this SHA logged width, aria-expanded and label visibility after load, after each of two toggles, and after a reload:

aria-expanded matches the rail in every state. Up to 1100px the expansion lasts for the session only and is not persisted, as the comment says. I also checked a resize sequence: at 1280 with a stored "expanded" preference, then 1024 (collapses), toggle open, then back to 1280 (stays expanded). The stored value stayed 0, so mid-width toggles don't overwrite the wide-screen preference.
Drawer
At 390px and 768px the sidebar starts off-canvas (x=-232). The hamburger opens it at x=0, 232px wide with labels visible, which covers the old drawer-at-64px bug now that .collapsed is applied below 769px too. Escape closes it: x=-232 and body.sidebar-open removed. responsive.css overrides .app-sidebar.collapsed for both width and labels.
Regressions
Full Playwright suite with CI=1: 311 passed, including the new toggle specs.
npm ci, npm test (182 suites, 4714 passed, 1 skipped), npm run lint (0 errors), npm run build: pass.
SIDEBAR_ICON_QUERY (max-width: 1100px) agrees with the 1101px brand rule and the 769-1100px chip rule in shell.css. MOBILE_NAV_QUERY stays at 768px.
Non-blocking
A truncated chip value has no title or other way to read the full text. The trigger's aria-label is just "Provider" or "Account" (frontend/src/lib/chip-select.ts:88), and the value is now capped at 16rem at every width, so a long account name is cut off with no way to see it in full. My mock had only "All Accounts" (82px, not truncated), so this comes from reading the code. A title on .chip-select-value would cover it.
From reading the code, not measured: the collapse is now applied at DOMContentLoaded, and .app-sidebar has transition: width. So on each full load between 769px and 1100px, the rail may visibly animate from 232px to 64px.
Temporary probe spec (8 tests) and screenshots are local only; the review worktree was clean afterwards. Review only, not merging.

The change
The CSS force-collapse up to 1100px is gone (layout.css). index.ts now owns the state: up to SIDEBAR_ICON_QUERY ((max-width: 1100px), nav/mobile-nav.ts) the rail starts collapsed, the toggle expands it for the session only, and aria-expanded is set from the same boolean as the class. Above 1100px the choice is still persisted in localStorage. A matchMedia change listener re-applies the initial state when the viewport crosses 1100px.
The phone drawer forces full width and labels even with .collapsed (responsive.css), and the desktop toggle stays hidden inside it (responsive.css:200-202).

aria-expanded matches the rendered width in every state. Resizing 1280 → 1024 collapses the rail with aria-expanded="false". Expanding at 1024 and widening back to 1280 leaves it expanded (nothing stored), which is consistent.
Drawer (390 and 600px): closed at left: -232; the hamburger opens it to 232px with labels (body.sidebar-open); Escape closes it; the overlay click closes it. It behaves the same at both widths.
Nit (non-blocking)
Below 1101px the rail now collapses in DOMContentLoaded rather than in CSS, so a first paint at full width is possible before the script runs. My probe couldn't measure it reliably (it read the rail before stylesheets applied), so this is a theory only. If it's visible, a small inline class on <html> set before first paint would cover it.
Merged at the reviewed head 4117532 (squash, pinned) after a local check of the combination with current main (main eb56472 + this head): the jest suites for dashboard, index and mobile-nav pass, and the dialog-focus, narrow-width, page-overflow and a11y Playwright specs pass. Before that, the combination with af5d0b5 ran the full suite: jest 4721 passed, Playwright 317 passed.
On claude-as-qa-2's first-paint nit: I probed it by holding back the app script in Playwright and measuring the rail before it ran. At 900px and 1024px the sidebar measures 0px wide until the script runs (the app shell isn't shown before then), then 64px. There's no full-width frame, so I haven't filed an issue.

Summary
Fixes the mid-width layout problems in #1682, reproduced in Chromium on the mocked production bundle.
layout.css). The topbar brand rule moves frommin-width: 901pxto1101pxto matchnowrap. From 769px to 1100px they drop the visible "Provider:" / "Account:" prefix (the chip keeps it as itsaria-label) and truncate the value with an ellipsis if still short of roomtables.css). The #703 design is kept: columns still scroll under the pinned Actions columnNot changed, with evidence
/purchases: did not reproduce at a true 535px CSS viewport. The sidebar is off-canvas behind the hamburger, history rows reflow into cards, and nothing is clipped or scrolls sideways (thepage-overflowspec also passes at 390px and 768px). The QA window was most likely zoomed, so its CSS width was wider than the reported viewport.Tests
