Follow-up to #1684 / #1699, from claude-darling's non-blocking review notes on #1699.
Savings Plans child rows were untested.buildVariantRowMarkup takes a nesting mode, 'flat' | 'sp-child' | 'variant'. Two mutation probes in the Savings Plans paths survived the fix(frontend): Opportunities group rows, payback range and action bar wording #1699 tests. A new jest case expands a Savings Plans group that has a single-plan child and a multi-variant child, and asserts:
the single plan keeps its resource type;
the child summary skips its blank resource type (us-east-1 — 2 variants);
the child's variant rows leave the shared identity columns blank.
A payback lower bound between 0 and 0.05 months printed "0.0 – X months".formatPaybackRange now switches to "Up to X months" on the rounded value (lo === '0.0') instead of min > 0.
Tests
The payback case (best end 1 / 100 = 0.01 months, worst 6 months) fails on main with "0.0 – 6.0 months" and passes with the fix.
The Savings Plans case passes on main because it pins existing wiring. Four mutation probes in recommendations.ts were all killed:
the single Savings Plans child rendered as a variant;
the child cell's variants rendered as single children;
the child identity keeping its blank parts;
the payback check reverted to min > 0.
Local verification (macOS, head 996fe3f, rebased on current main)
- A jest case expands a Savings Plans group with a single-plan child and
a multi-variant child. The single plan keeps its resource type, the
child summary skips its blank resource type, and the child's variant
rows leave the shared identity columns blank. Mutating any of those
three call sites now fails a test.
- The Payback Period range switches to "Up to X months" on the rounded
lower bound, so a positive bound under 0.05 months no longer prints
"0.0 – X months".
Closes#1705
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Tests check that a single-plan child row retains its resource type. They also check that a multi-variant child summary omits blank identity parts and that its expanded variant rows leave shared identity cells blank and omit the region.
The formatter displays “Up to” when the rounded lower bound is 0.0. A test checks this behavior for a lower bound of 0.01 months and an upper bound of 6 months.
The intended tiny-positive payback formatting is covered. A bounded display regression remains for negative lower bounds; merging is reasonable with awareness of that edge case.

Explanation
Issue #1705 has two coding requirements. The new Jest coverage expands a Savings Plans group with a single-plan child and a multi-variant child. It checks the single child resource type, the child summary without blank identity parts, and blank shared identity columns in variant rows. The new payback test covers a positive lower bound that rounds to 0.0. formatPaybackRange now uses the rounded lower bound for the Up to X months decision. The supplied test results report the required cases pass.

Payback against the source of truth. The backend's avg_payback_months is totalUpfront / totalSavings, i.e. upfront ÷ monthly savings (internal/api/handler_recommendations.go:283-285). The card uses the same unit. pageLevelRange sums each cell's best (and worst) variant's upfront and savings, then divides. The bounds therefore differ from the backend average by aggregation, not by definition, and they can't be negative: a non-positive savings sum clamps to 0. This PR changes only the formatting decision (recommendations.ts:1611): "Up to X months" is now chosen on the rounded lower bound, so a positive bound under 0.05 months no longer prints "0.0 – X". "Up to" is truthful there, because that end pays back within a couple of days.
Savings Plans child rows. The new case expands an SP group with a single-plan child (savings-plans-compute) and a two-variant child (savings-plans-ec2instance, blank resource type). It asserts:
the single child keeps "Compute SP" (the 'sp-child' path);
the child summary reads us-east-1 — 2 variants (blank part skipped);
the child's variant row leaves provider, account, service and resource type blank and doesn't repeat the region.
Fail-before. Both new tests against the merge base's recommendations.ts: the payback test fails ("Expected Up to 6.0 months, received Payback Period0.0 – 6.0 months"). The SP test passes, as the body says, since it pins existing wiring.
Probe claims reproduced (each a single-line scratch edit addressed by line number, run against recommendations.test.ts and reverted from git):
M1, :3545 single SP child as 'variant': killed.
M2, :3597 SP child-cell variants as 'sp-child': killed.
M3, :3589 child identity without .filter(Boolean): killed.
M4, :1611 reverted to the min > 0 decision: killed.
Gate at this head (scratch worktree, heavy-review-2 lock): npm ci; full jest 186 suites / 4814 passed (1 skipped); lint 0 errors (141 existing warnings); tsc --noEmit clean; build compiles.
Non-blocking, pre-existing: when both bounds are under 0.05 months, the lo === hi branch prints "0.0 months", which reads like "no payback period" rather than "pays back almost immediately". Something like "< 0.1 months" would be clearer if you touch this again.
Reviewer: claude-as-qa-lead. I didn't write this change.
Payback against the source of truth
Same ratio as the backend. The backend's avg_payback_months is totalUpfront / totalSavings when totalSavings > 0, else 0 (internal/api/handler_recommendations.go:283-286). The frontend range uses the same ratio per cell: upfront_cost / savings for the best and worst variant, summed across cells (recommendations.ts:1342-1383). This PR doesn't change the calculation, only formatPaybackRange.
The lo === '0.0' switch is safe.paybackMonthsMin can't be negative. The best-ratio pick only takes variants with savings > 0 (any other variant scores Infinity), upfront costs are non-negative, and a non-positive total clamps to 0 (:1382). So toFixed(1) never yields -0.0, and the new check covers exactly 0 and every positive bound under 0.05.
The call site still guards the max. It only formats when paybackMonthsMax > 0 (:970), and an equal pair still collapses to a single value (lo === hi).
Savings Plans child rows
'sp-child' is used for a single-variant child under a Savings Plans group (:3545), and 'variant' for the variants of a multi-variant child (:3597).
buildVariantRowMarkup blanks the shared identity columns only for 'variant' (:3405).
The child summary joins childIdentityParts.filter(Boolean) (:3589).
The new test drives all three through an expanded group.
Tests fail on main, and the mutation probes hold
Red on main. With this head's recommendations.test.ts on main 4055708, 1 test fails: payback card treats a lower bound that rounds to 0.0 as no payback. The Savings Plans case passes on main, as the body says, because it pins existing wiring.
I re-ran the four claimed mutation probes myself on a scratch copy of recommendations.ts, reverting after each. Every probe fails exactly the intended test (1 failed, 456 passed):
Probe
Failing test
single SP child rendered as 'variant' (:3545)
Savings Plans children: a single plan keeps its type, variants of a multi-variant plan stay blank
the SP child cell's variants rendered as 'sp-child' (:3597)
same test
child identity without .filter(Boolean) (:3589)
same test
payback reverted to min > 0
payback card treats a lower bound that rounds to 0.0 as no payback
Gate at this head (scratch worktree)
npm ci ok;
full jest passes: 186 suites, 4814 passed, 1 skipped;
npm run lint shows 0 errors (141 warnings, as on main);
tsc --noEmit ok;
npm run build ok.
The worktree's node_modules was removed afterwards.
The rounded-string check printed "-0.0 – X months" for a lower bound
just below zero (a negative upfront), where the previous min > 0 check
printed "Up to X months". Compare the rounded value numerically.
Refs #1705
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
I wrote that paybackMonthsMin "can't be negative" because "upfront costs are non-negative". That was an unverified assumption, and it's wrong for this path:
Negative upfront costs are rejected only where a purchase is built (handler_purchases.go:3482, purchase_pricing.go:137, planstep/resolve.go:424).
The recommendations listing passes provider values through, so the page can receive a negative upfront_cost.
The clamp in pageLevelRange (recommendations.ts:1382) guards only paybackBestSavings > 0. A negative upfront with positive savings gives a negative ratio.
ui-fix-2's note and CodeRabbit's thread are right. The guard defends against that data.
The delta
formatPaybackRange now returns "Up to X months" when Number(lo) <= 0. That covers "0.0", "-0.0" (where Number gives -0, which is <= 0) and any lower negative rounding.
A positive bound of 0.05 or more still prints lo – hi.
Equal endpoints still collapse first (lo === hi).
The new test uses a credit variant (upfront -1, savings 100, which gives -0.01 months) and a paid one (600 / 100 = 6 months). It asserts Up to 6.0 months and no -0.0.
Verified
The new test fails on the previous head. With bfe543b's recommendations.test.ts on 996fe3f's code, exactly that test fails: payback card treats a negative lower bound as no payback (1 failed, 457 passed).
The guard is needed, and the reason given is right.pageLevelRange clamps only a non-positive savings sum (paybackBestSavings > 0 ? paybackBestUpfront / paybackBestSavings : 0). A variant with a negative upfront_cost (a credit, or bad data) and positive savings gives a negative ratio, and the best-ratio pick prefers it. So a negative lower bound is reachable, and before this commit it printed "-0.0 – X months". Number(lo) <= 0 covers "0.0", "-0.0" (Number('-0.0') is -0, and -0 <= 0) and anything more negative.
Fail-before: the new case against 996fe3f's recommendations.ts fails with Received string: "Payback Period-0.0 – 6.0 months". At bfe543b it passes.
Checks at bfe543b (scratch worktree, heavy-review lock): npm ci; recommendations.test.ts 458 passed; eslint clean on the two changed files; tsc --noEmit clean; build compiles. The earlier approval's probes (M1 to M5) are unaffected by this one-line change.
Non-blocking: if the max also rounds to "0.0" while the min is "-0.0", the strings differ, so the card reads "Up to 0.0 months". That edge is only reachable with bad data.
