Part of #702 (Redshift re-drive idempotency). This is PR3a. It adds the Redshift Retry gate and stamp copy, and changes no production behaviour yet: the existing Redshift re-drive refusal (RedriveRefusalReason, inside checkRetryEligibilityGates) still refuses every Redshift Retry before the new gate runs. PR3b lifts that guard once the cloud-commitments-go#107 attempt-journal platform PR is merged and deployed.

What

  • Retry refusals and settle wait (internal/purchase/redshift_retry.go):
    • Permanent refusal: a failed Redshift purchase cannot be retried when its first dispatch time is missing, or is at least 24h old (the re-drive horizon). A retry could then buy a second reservation.
    • Exemption: a row proven never submitted at attempt 0 is exempt from both refusals, because its successor mints a fresh stamp.
    • Settle wait: otherwise a retry waits until 10 minutes after the row's last save, so a lost response has time to show up in AWS.
  • Database clock (GetRedshiftRetryClock): both ages come from now() in SQL. A missing stamp reads as nil, never as fresh.
  • Retry gate (checkRedshiftRetryGate):
    • a permanent refusal returns 409 with ops_hint and redrive_unsafe;
    • the settle wait returns 409 with retry_after_seconds and a Retry-After header;
    • force never overrides either;
    • non-Redshift executions never read the clock.
  • Stamp copy: the retry successor keeps the lineage's first_dispatch_at, so go's dedupe window still covers the original buy. A never-submitted attempt-0 row passes none, which matches the store's mint rule.
  • Single writer of the idempotency key: a test scans the module's Go sources and the SQL that writes purchase_executions.idempotency_key, including an upsert's DO UPDATE SET. It fails when a writer appears outside the known set (retry copy, per-account derive, store mint and scan, plan-step attach), or when the SQL is built dynamically. The go#107 settle contract depends on a retry copying the key verbatim.

Tests and evidence

  • Tests: unit tests for purchase, api, config and mocks, and config integration tests on a real database, all green on the rebased tip. Pre-commit is clean over the range.
  • Mutation probes: each of these made a test fail:
    • settle wait forced to 0;
    • never-submitted rule flipped;
    • horizon check made strict;
    • database clock replaced by 0;
    • successor stamp replaced by now;
    • stamp-copy rule dropped;
    • new gate moved before the old refusal;
    • an extra IdempotencyKey writer added.
  • Review: two non-author passes. Pass 1 found a missed upsert form and a few Lows, all fixed. Pass 2 approved. The committed tree differs from the reviewed one only by a one-line rename of a shadowed variable, which fixed a compile error.

No migration. No openapi change while the gate is unreachable; it comes with PR3b.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Redshift retries now observe a 10-minute wait after an update and are refused when the first dispatch is missing or at least 24 hours old. Waiting retries include a rounded-up wait time and Retry-After guidance.
    • Retry successors preserve the original first-dispatch timestamp when applicable.

Part of #702 (PR3a).

Decide whether a failed Redshift purchase may be retried yet:
- refuse for good when no first dispatch time is recorded, or when the
  first dispatch is at least 24h old, since a retry could then buy a
  second reservation; a row proven never submitted at attempt 0 is
  exempt, because its successor mints a fresh stamp;
- otherwise wait until 10 minutes after the row's last save, so a lost
  response has time to show up in AWS.

Both ages come from the database clock. Nothing calls this yet.

Part of #702 (PR3a).

A Redshift retry is refused with 409: for good (ops_hint,
redrive_unsafe) when the first dispatch time is missing or too old,
or with retry_after_seconds and Retry-After inside the settle wait.
The successor row keeps the lineage's first dispatch time, so its
dedupe window still covers the original buy; a row proven never
submitted at attempt 0 passes none, so the successor mints its own.

Inert for now: the existing Redshift re-drive refusal still runs first.

Part of #702 (PR3a).

The go#107 settle contract relies on a retry copying its lineage's
idempotency key verbatim. Scan the module's Go sources for assignments
to IdempotencyKey and the SQL that writes purchase_executions'
idempotency_key, and fail when a writer appears outside the known set.

Walkthrough

Redshift retry requests now check first-dispatch and last-update ages. The request path can reject unsafe retries or return a temporary wait. Retry successors preserve the first-dispatch timestamp, and new tests cover the retry clock and idempotency-key writers.

Changes: Redshift Retry Controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry policy and boundaries
internal/purchase/redshift_retry.go, internal/purchase/redshift_retry_test.go
New helpers identify Redshift executions and never-submitted first attempts. They determine permanent refusal at the 24-hour first-dispatch boundary and temporary waiting until 10 minutes have passed since the last update. Tests cover the boundary conditions.
Database retry clock
internal/config/interfaces.go, internal/config/store_postgres_redshift_retry.go, internal/config/store_postgres_redshift_retry_integration_test.go, internal/mocks/stores.go
The store interface and PostgreSQL store provide elapsed update and first-dispatch times using the database clock. Integration tests cover elapsed times, null dispatch timestamps, and missing executions. The mock implements the new store method.
Retry request gate
internal/api/handler_purchases_redshift_retry.go, internal/api/handler_purchases.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_redshift_retry_test.go
Retry validation invokes the Redshift gate after existing eligibility checks. The gate returns a 409 for permanent refusals or remaining wait time, including a rounded delay and Retry-After header for temporary waits. Tests cover gate outcomes and clock errors.
Retry successor timestamp
internal/api/handler_purchases_redshift_retry.go, internal/api/handler_purchases.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_redshift_retry_test.go
Successor construction copies the predecessor’s first-dispatch timestamp into a distinct pointer, except for never-submitted first attempts. Tests cover copied and absent timestamps.
Idempotency-key writer checks
internal/purchase/idempotency_key_writers_test.go
A module-wide test scans Go assignments and literal SQL for idempotency-key writers. It compares the discovered writers with a pinned list and checks insert, update, and dynamic-insert cases.

Cold review of e2b429a on main 0a59d3a, plus the test-only delta to 30110dd (internal/api/handler_purchases_redshift_retry_test.go +7/-7, dropping gateWithClock's unused return; it fixes the unparam lint).

  • Retry gate: loadAndValidateRetryRequest runs checkRetryEligibilityGates (RedriveRefusalReason) and then checkRedshiftRetryGate (internal/api/handler_purchases.go:2556-2561). A row counts as possibly sent unless it is NoSubmission with RetryAttemptN == 0. Otherwise it needs a stamp under the 24h horizon and is refused until 10 minutes after updated_at, measured with the DB clock (now() in internal/config/store_postgres_redshift_retry.go:27-29; one pool read outside any tx, Redshift only).
  • Stamp copy: persistRetryExecution, the only successor writer, copies first_dispatch_at (handler_purchases_redshift_retry.go:40-45, used at handler_purchases.go:2790), so the stamp carries through retry-of-retry. A predecessor with no stamp gives a successor with no stamp, which stampRedshiftDispatch then refuses (redshift_lineage.go:113-130).
  • Inert before PR3b: isRedshiftRec is a subset of the services RedriveRefusalReason already refuses (manager.go:640-651), so the new gate is not reached today. Non-Redshift executions never read the clock. errnotes, openapi and History are unchanged.
  • Owner decisions 2026-11-06b: Q1, Q3, Q4, Q5 and Q7 are followed; Q2, Q6 and Q8 are out of this PR.

Runs (GOMAXPROCS=4, -p 2):

  • At e2b429a: build, vet (with and without integration) and unit tests for purchase, config, api and mocks pass; integration for purchase and config, and api scoped to Retry|Redshift, pass.
  • At 30110dd: build, vet, api unit tests and purchase RedshiftRetry|IdempotencyKey pass. CI: 41 pass.
  • Probes, 15 killed:
    • gate body removed;
    • settle window 9m;
    • strict horizon;
    • NeverSubmitted without the attempt-0 condition;
    • stamp copy dropped;
    • the never-submitted rule removed from the copy;
    • stamp dropped from the successor literal;
    • NULL stamp coalesced to 0;
    • scanner writers: an assignment in another package, a struct literal, a pointer write, a write in cmd/server, an UPDATE SET.

Non-blocking (5 probes survived):

  • App time instead of the SQL now() passes TestGetRedshiftRetryClock_UsesDBNow (the container and host share a clock); the code does use now().
  • Removing the gate call (handler_purchases.go:2559-2561) passes, because RedriveRefusalReason refuses first. PR3b needs a wiring test when it lifts that guard.
  • Scanner (idempotency_key_writers_test.go:113-115): schema-qualified and quoted table names in UPDATE, and a whole-struct copy (*b = *a), are not caught; neither exists on main.

PR #1816 (issue #702 PR3a), base main 0a59d3a. Reviewed the full 3-dot diff at e2b429a plus the e2b429a..30110dd delta. Owner decisions read from 2026-11-06b-platform702-pr3.md (Q1-Q8). The PR body was treated as a claim; every point below was checked against the code.

Head delta (e2b429a..30110dd)

One commit, test-only: internal/api/handler_purchases_redshift_retry_test.go, 7+/7-. gateWithClock drops its unused *MockConfigStore return value and its five callers change from h, _ := to h :=. No production file is touched and no assertion changes. This fixes the single unparam lint finding seen at e2b429a (handler_purchases_redshift_retry_test.go:23).

Blocking findings

None.

Non-blocking findings

  1. Nothing proves that the clock reads come from the database. Mutation A1 replaced now() in GetRedshiftRetryClock (internal/config/store_postgres_redshift_retry.go:27-29) with a Go-side time.Now() parameter, and TestGetRedshiftRetryClock_UsesDBNow still passed, because the test container shares the host clock. The code itself is correct: now() runs in SQL, and updated_at is set by the DB (an INSERT default, plus the 000128 trigger on UPDATE), so neither value comes from the app clock. Suggestion for PR3b: add a skew test, for example one that compares against SELECT now() from inside a transaction held open for a measurable time, or one that asserts the query text contains now().

  2. The C8b scanner (internal/purchase/idempotency_key_writers_test.go) misses several evasive writer forms. Each of these survived:

    • a reflect writer (FieldByName("IdempotencyKey").SetString);
    • schema-qualified SQL (UPDATE public.purchase_executions SET idempotency_key);
    • a quoted identifier (UPDATE "purchase_executions" ...);
    • UPDATE SQL split across a + concatenation (dynamic detection covers INSERT only);
    • a second assignment inside an already-pinned function (the check works per function, not per site).

    Migrations (.sql files) are not scanned either. Its own doc comment admits the struct-copy and non-literal blind spots. Suggestion: widen the table regex to (?:"?\w+"?\.)?"?purchase_executions"?, add the concatenated-UPDATE case to the dynamic count, or count write sites per function. This does not block: it is a tripwire, and the realistic forms are caught.

  3. Deletion probe J1 removed the checkRedshiftRetryGate call at internal/api/handler_purchases.go:2559-2561, and the whole internal/api short suite still passed. That is expected while the old guard holds, because no test can reach the call yet. PR3b must add an end-to-end loadAndValidateRetryRequest test that reaches the gate.

  4. Fail-safe dead end, related to Q4. Take an attempt-1 successor of a never-submitted attempt 0 whose approval email failed (finalizePurchaseStatus, handler_purchases.go:3453-3456). It has no stamp and NoSubmission is false, so a Retry of it is permanently refused with "no first dispatch time recorded" even though nothing was sent. This is consistent with the store's mint rule (store_postgres_first_dispatch.go:33-38) and it blocks rather than double-buys. It is worth mentioning in the Q4 known-issue note.

  5. Minor wording: the test name TestIdempotencyKeyCopyHasSingleWriter pins five writer functions, not one.

Checked and holding

  • DB clock: GetRedshiftRetryClock (store_postgres_redshift_retry.go:23-42) computes both ages from SQL now(). A NULL first_dispatch_at scans as nil and is never zero (lines 37-40; integration test NullStampIsNil). An unknown row maps to ErrNotFound and then to a 500 (not a refusal) at handler_purchases_redshift_retry.go:19-21. It reads through the pool outside any transaction, called from the handler after RBAC, so there is no read inside a caller's pgx.Tx. The query is keyed by execution_id only, but requireExecutionAccess has already run (handler_purchases.go:2575-2578 inside authorizeRetrySession), so tenant scoping holds. Ages cannot be negative, because the writer's now() comes before its commit.
  • Boundaries: horizon *sinceStamp >= 24h refuses (redshift_retry.go:44), which matches the dispatch gate's first_dispatch_at > now() - horizon (store_postgres_first_dispatch.go:40), so exactly 24h is refused at both points. Settle sinceUpdate >= 10m allows (redshift_retry.go:52). Retry-After rounds up (handler file:28). force never applies: the new gate has no force input.
  • Never-submitted exemption: NeverSubmitted (redshift_retry.go:27) is NoSubmission && RetryAttemptN == 0, which mirrors the store mint rule's EXISTS predicate (store_postgres_first_dispatch.go:34-37).
  • Stamp copy preserves the first stamp:
    • retrySuccessorFirstDispatchAt (handler file:40-45) clones the predecessor pointer, with no aliasing;
    • SavePurchaseExecutionTx leaves first_dispatch_at out of DO UPDATE SET (store_postgres.go:1186-1209, comment at 1223);
    • StampFirstDispatchTx wraps it in COALESCE (store_postgres_first_dispatch.go:33);
    • fan-out rows inherit it through acctExec := *baseExec (execution.go:308);
    • execution.go:645-646 turns it into RequestedAt.
  • The PR is inert before PR3b:
    • RedriveRefusalReason (manager.go:584-591) refuses any execution with any AWS Redshift or EC2 rec, selected or not, and any unknown provider. hasRedshiftRec (redshift_lineage.go:31-37) needs a selected Redshift rec with provider ""/aws, so every row the new gate would refuse is refused first, with or without force (test OldRedriveRefusalStillWinsForRedshift).
    • For non-Redshift rows the gate returns before any DB read (handler file:16-18).
    • The stamp copy runs for every retry. But only stampRedshiftDispatch (manager.go:330) can set a stamp, and only on rows with a selected Redshift rec. Those rows, and their fan-out children (all recs are copied), are refused by the old guard, so a retryable row always has a nil stamp and the copy writes nil, as before.
    • Other paths (the reaper's auto re-drive, stranded_redrive.go) never call persistRetryExecution.
  • Scope against the owner decisions: there is no History/openapi wording change and no ResolveOpsHint export (Q3=A defers both to PR3b). The nil-journal guard is PR3b work (Q2=B). No migration.
  • Error text: the refusal and settle texts carry no ids, and the 409 body exposes only a reason, a boolean flag and an integer second count. The store error that wraps the execution id reaches only a 500 path.
  • Mock: GetRedshiftRetryClock has no default return, so an unexpected call panics (mocks/stores.go:592-601).
  • Writers found by grep match the pinned set: store_postgres.go:1156 and 2272, execution.go:309, plan_step_attach.go:331, handler_purchases.go:2775.

Runs (GOWORK=off, GOMAXPROCS=4, -p 2, -count=1, under heavy-review-2.lock)

At e2b429a (the full PR):

  • go build ./...: PASS.
  • go vet (api, config, mocks, purchase): PASS.
  • go vet -tags integration: did not complete, for environmental reasons. The run failed with "package iter is not in std" and missing go-build cache entries, so it never vetted the code. It was re-run at the new head (below).
  • go test -short (api, config, mocks, purchase): 4/4 packages ok.
  • go test -tags integration (config, purchase, api; Docker testcontainers): 3/3 packages ok (config 89.5s, purchase 40.9s, api 117.9s).
  • golangci-lint v2.10.1 on the four packages: 1 issue (unparam, gateWithClock, test file:23). The new head fixes it.

At 30110dd (the new head):

  • go vet internal/api, with and without -tags integration: PASS.
  • go test -short internal/api: ok.
  • go test -tags integration internal/api: ok (139.6s).
  • go vet -tags integration on all four packages: PASS.
  • golangci-lint on all four packages: 0 issues.

config, mocks and purchase are byte-identical between the two heads, so their e2b429a test results stand.

Mutation probes (all at e2b429a, in a scratch worktree, each reverted right after its run; worktree confirmed clean)

  • A1, SQL now() replaced by a Go time.Now() parameter: SURVIVED (non-blocking finding 1).
  • A2, handler permanent-refusal age taken from time.Since(failedExec.FirstDispatchAt) instead of the DB clock: KILLED (PastHorizonPermanent, InsideSettleRetryAfter, AfterSettleAllowed). The first run hit the GOROOT setup error; the re-run killed it.
  • A3, settle age forced to 10m: KILLED (InsideSettleRetryAfter).
  • B1, horizon >= changed to >: KILLED (TestRedshiftRetryPermanentRefusal/exactly_horizon_refused).
  • B2, horizon narrowed by 1h: KILLED (just_under_horizon_allowed).
  • B3, horizon widened by 1h: KILLED (exactly/past horizon cases, plus the api PastHorizonPermanent test).
  • C1, settle widened to 11m: KILLED (RedshiftRetryWait/midway, InsideSettleRetryAfter, AfterSettleAllowed).
  • C2, settle narrowed to 9m: KILLED (midway, InsideSettleRetryAfter).
  • C3, settle comparison flipped: KILLED (4 RedshiftRetryWait cases).
  • C4, nil stamp allowed: KILLED (no_stamp cases, LegacyStamplessPermanent).
  • E1, successor stamp set to time.Now(): KILLED (CopiesFirstDispatchAt, StamplessPredecessorStaysStampless).
  • E2, NeverSubmitted exemption dropped from the copy: KILLED (NoSubmissionAttempt0LeavesStampNil).
  • E3, pointer aliased instead of cloned: KILLED (CopiesFirstDispatchAt).
  • F1, upsert overwrites first_dispatch_at: KILLED (integration TestSavePurchaseExecution_FirstDispatchAtIsInsertOnly).
  • F2, COALESCE dropped in StampFirstDispatchTx: KILLED (4 integration StampFirstDispatch tests, including RetrySuccessorKeepsCopiedStamp).
  • I1, new gate moved before the old refusal: KILLED (OldRedriveRefusalStillWinsForRedshift).
  • J1, gate call deleted: SURVIVED, as expected while the old guard holds (finding 3).
  • G1, second writer function in internal/api: KILLED (TestIdempotencyKeyCopyHasSingleWriter).
  • G2, writer method on a different receiver (RedshiftRetryClock): KILLED.
  • G7, plain UPDATE purchase_executions SET idempotency_key: KILLED.
  • G3 (reflect writer), G4 (schema-qualified UPDATE), G5 (concatenated UPDATE), G6 (quoted identifier) and G8 (second write inside the pinned persistRetryExecution): SURVIVED (finding 2).

Not verified

  • No real AWS account was used, and none was needed, because the change is inert.
  • Clock skew between the app host and the DB was not reproduced with real skew (see finding 1).
