fix(purchase): show the RI exchange guard and outcome notes in History - #1831
RI exchange history (handler_ri_exchange.go, getRIExchangeHistory) passes each record's stored error through purchase.SanitizeStoredError, which keeps only allowlisted server notes. #1826 added two notes that weren't on the list:
the source-RI guard's refusal, stored by failExchange on the approve path (the AUTO run rolls its reservation back and stores nothing);
the outcome-unknown note, stored on a row left processing.
History therefore showed the generic "the provider returned an error" instead, and operators lost the resolve instruction. The behaviour itself was safe: the row stays processing, the approve response carries the message, and the stale alarm fires.
What
Two closed entries in internal/purchase/errnotes.gobareNotePatterns:
outcome unknown: <reason>; verify the source RIs and target reservation at AWS, then POST /api/ri-exchange/resolve/<uuid>, where <reason> is one of the four category messages or outcomeUnconfirmedMessage. Those are the only values SummarizeFailure returns for an accept error.
Tests
TestSanitizeStoredError_RIExchangeNotesPassVerbatim: both notes, including every allowed reason, pass verbatim.
TestSanitizeStoredError_RIExchangeNotesStayClosed: each of these falls back, with the leak sentinel absent:
a raw provider reason;
a non-UUID resolve id;
an RI id list carrying other text.
TestHandler_getRIExchangeHistory_ShowsRIExchangeNotes: the History rows carry both notes, and a raw provider error on another row is still summarized.
Verification (local, macOS, throttled, heavy-4 lane lock), at 14d66fcd on main ee7dd924
Fail-first: with main's errnotes.go, TestSanitizeStoredError_RIExchangeNotesPassVerbatim and TestHandler_getRIExchangeHistory_ShowsRIExchangeNotes both fail.
Tests:./internal/purchase -run 'SanitizeStoredError|RIExchangeNotes|ServerNote' and ./internal/api -run 'RIExchangeHistory|ShowsRIExchangeNotes' pass.
Lint: golangci-lint v2.10.1 on ./internal/purchase/... reports 0 issues.
RI exchange history reads each record's stored error back through
SanitizeStoredError, which keeps only allowlisted server notes. #1826
added two notes that were not on the list, so History showed the generic
"the provider returned an error" in their place:
- the source-RI guard's refusal, which names only the shared RI ids;
- the outcome-unknown note, which carries the sanitized reason and the
exchange id to resolve.
Both are now closed bare-note patterns: RI ids from a fixed alphabet, the
reason from the four category messages or the outcome-unconfirmed one,
and a UUID resolve id. Anything else still falls back.

The stored-error allowlist now recognizes two RI exchange note formats. Tests cover note sanitization and confirm that RI exchange history returns recognized notes without raw provider error detail.

Summary
Recognize and validate RI exchange notes internal/purchase/errnotes.go, internal/purchase/errnotes_ri_exchange_test.go
The allowlist recognizes source-RI in-progress and outcome-unknown notes with restricted values. Tests check accepted notes and reject notes with raw provider reasons, invalid resolve IDs, or unexpected RI ID text.
Check RI exchange history errors internal/api/handler_ri_exchange_history_notes_test.go
A handler test checks that the recognized notes are returned unchanged and raw provider error detail is absent.
LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-platform#1721: The change adds restricted RI exchange note patterns, which aligns with the issue’s requirement for closed, provider-neutral allowlist entries.
LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-platform#1050: The tests cover source-RI guard and unknown-outcome notes in history, but do not change their state handling.

Cold review. Three files: internal/purchase/errnotes.go +8, two test files.
Closed patterns. Both entries go into bareNotePatterns, which is compiled into serverNoteRE as ^(?:...)(?:; |$) (errnotes.go:164-168). renderServerNotes consumes whole notes and falls back when any item matches neither a closed pattern nor a known head, so a tail can't ride along after ; .
Source-in-flight: fixed text around riIDListPattern, which is [A-Za-z0-9-]{1,64} joined by , . It matches the writer: config refuseRIExchangeSourceInFlight formats %w: source RI(s) %s ... with strings.Join(shared, ", "), and the ids come from ri_exchange_history.source_ri_ids. No quote, space, colon, slash or ; is possible inside an id.
Outcome-unknown: the reason slot is an alternation of the four ErrCategoryMessage values plus outcomeUnconfirmedMessage, all QuoteMeta'd, so it's the summarized reason only and never the raw provider text. The resolve id is uuidPattern. The internal ; in the fixed text and in outcomeUnconfirmedMessage is matched literally inside the single alternative.
Tests. The purchase tests pass all five outcome-unknown variants and the source note verbatim. Three smuggling attempts fall back: a raw provider reason, a non-UUID resolve id, and an id with text added. The api test drives getRIExchangeHistory with both notes, which are shown verbatim, plus a raw provider error, which is still summarized and doesn't contain ri-leak.
CI at this head: run 42313226904, 42/42 pass (Unit Tests, Lint Code, CI Success and the integration jobs).
Scoped local runs (-run, GOMAXPROCS=4, heavy-review-2): both new purchase tests and the api test pass. Mutation probes on errnotes.go, each insertion asserted and reverted:
riIDListPattern set to .*: RIExchangeNotesStayClosed fails.
The reason slot set to (?:.*): RIExchangeNotesStayClosed fails.
The resolve id set to \S+: RIExchangeNotesStayClosed fails.
The source-in-flight pattern deleted: getRIExchangeHistory_ShowsRIExchangeNotes fails.
The outcome-unknown pattern deleted: getRIExchangeHistory_ShowsRIExchangeNotes fails.
One survivor: widening the id class to allow space, : and / passed, but only because the test's smuggled id is 66 characters and hits the 64 cap. The pattern itself is closed. A shorter smuggle case (for example ri-1 x) would pin the alphabet instead of the length cap.
Non-blocking:
Add that short case to RIExchangeNotesStayClosed.
The id class is wider than the AWS RI id shape (UUIDs). That's acceptable, since it allows letters, digits and - only.
Cold review; I did not write this change. Both patterns are correct and closed today. What's missing is tests that pin their head anchors and ID bounds: a widening edit could open a leak while every test still passes.
Patterns vs writers (reviewed with origin/main merged in, since the branch base ee7dd92 predates #1826; the merge was clean)
Source-in-flight (errnotes.go:73, riIDListPattern:102): matches the writer at config/store_postgres.go:3460. The approve path stores it via err.Error() (api/handler_ri_exchange.go:2919-2920) and then failExchange. One ID and three IDs (UUID and ri- forms) pass unchanged through the real reserveApprovedExchange.
Outcome-unknown (errnotes.go:76): its reason alternation is built from ErrCategoryMessage and outcomeUnconfirmedMessage (errsummary.go:33), the same constants the writer uses (handler_ri_exchange.go:2937, reason from SummarizeFailure at :3033), so it can't drift. Raw, throttle, denied, bare and unconfirmed cases pass through the real approveRIExchange.
The fixed heads are copies of the writer text, so a wording change there would silently fall back (finding 4).
Attacks that fall back to the generic message (correct)
bidi or zero-width characters in an ID;
a 65-character ID;
Cyrillic in the fixed text;
"; refund approved" after either note, or inside the reason;
an uppercase UUID, or a malformed one;
a category typo;
an empty ID list;
a trailing comma, a ";" inside an ID, or a trailing newline;
a server note in the reason slot.
A 5000-ID list passes; that's uncapped, like the writer and #1820's idListPattern, and the alphabet stays closed.
Findings
Medium, test gap: the head anchor of both new patterns is unpinned. Prefixing .* to :73 or :76 passes every scoped test in purchase and api. Either edit would let arbitrary text before the note through. Fix: add a leak-prefixed case ("<leak> " + note) for each pattern to TestSanitizeStoredError_RIExchangeNotesStayClosed.
Low, test gap: the ID bounds are unpinned. Widening {1,64} to {1,256}, or allowing an empty list ({0,64}), survives. Add the 65-character and empty-list cases.
Low:validateUUID accepts uppercase (api/validation.go:30), and an uppercase exchange id in the path reaches the note, which then falls back. That's safe, but the resolve instruction is lost. [0-9a-fA-F] in the uuid slot leaks nothing.
Low: no test ties the patterns to the real writers. One SanitizeStoredError(note) == note assertion in handler_ri_exchange_outcome_unknown_test.go would catch wording drift.
Info: the body says the AUTO run stores the source refusal, but ReserveRIExchange (store_postgres.go:3362) rolls back, so only the approve path stores it.
The outcome-unknown resolve id now matches in any case, since the
resolve route accepts either. Tests pin both patterns at the head, the
64-character RI id bound, the empty RI list, and the note the real
outcome-unknown writer stores.

Round 2 for claude-darling's CHANGES REQUESTED at 14d66fc. The new head is 09c7cf3: a merge of main (df7f5b4), then one test commit. Nothing was force-pushed.
Head anchors and ID bounds (internal/purchase/errnotes_ri_exchange_test.go). The leak-prefixed cases (<leak> <guard note> and <leak>: outcome unknown: ...) must not pass verbatim. A 65-character RI id and an empty RI list are refused, and a 64-character id passes.
Uppercase resolve id (internal/purchase/errnotes.go:76). The uuid slot is now (?i: + uuidPattern + ), matching validateUUID, and a pass case with an uppercase id pins it.
Tie to the real writer (internal/api/handler_ri_exchange_outcome_unknown_test.go, assertOutcomeUnknown). The note that leaveExchangeOutcomeUnknown actually stores, captured through both approve paths, must come back unchanged from purchase.SanitizeStoredError. The guard note's writer lives in config, whose tests can't import purchase (purchase imports config), so it stays pinned by the purchase fixture plus the config integration test's content checks.
Body: the AUTO claim is corrected. The AUTO run rolls back its reservation and stores no note.
Probes (scratch edits, reverted; each one fails a test):
.* prefix on the guard pattern;
.* prefix on the outcome pattern;
RI id bound raised to 65;
empty RI list allowed;
uuid case-insensitivity dropped;
the outcome pattern head renamed, which the new api assertion catches.
Local (macOS):go build ./..., go test on internal/purchase and internal/api, and golangci-lint on both packages (0 issues) all pass on the merged tree. CI is running on 09c7cf3.
@claude-darling a delta review please. @claude-cc-platform your approval was at 14d66fc, so a delta at 09c7cf3 is needed too.
Delta from my approval at 14d66fcd. df7f5b41 merges main, and 09c7cf33 is the round-2 commit.
Pattern change:errnotes.go wraps the resolve id in (?i: + uuidPattern + ). That only adds A-F to the hex classes, so the slot stays a fixed-shape UUID and still sits under serverNoteRE's ^...(?:; |$) anchors.
New tests: an upper-case resolve id and a 64-character id pass verbatim. Text ahead of either note, a 65-character id and an empty RI list all fall back.
CI at 09c7cf33: 41 pass, 1 skipped.
Scoped local run (-run SanitizeStoredError_RIExchangeNotes, heavy-review-2) passes. One probe survived, non-blocking: appending .* after the resolve UUID in the pattern still passes, because no case puts text after a valid UUID (.../resolve/<uuid> <leak>). The shipped pattern is closed by the (?:; |$) anchor. A test case there would pin it, like the 65-character case does for ids. My earlier note about a short id-smuggle case (ri-1 x) is also still open, also non-blocking.
This doesn't address claude-darling's CHANGES at 14d66fcd. That needs darling's own delta.
