Description

Part of #985.

Each example sets hatchling's only-include on the wheel target alone, so the wheel holds only python/isaaccapture_examples/<name>/, but uv build packs the whole example directory into the sdist:

  • tracked media: vehicle_teleop 15.7 MB (the README gif), noitom 5 MB (three gifs), camera_viz 1.1 MB (test_data/recording.mp4);
  • CMake and C++ sources, scripts, Dockerfiles and configs that the wheel never uses;
  • stray .mcap recordings at the example root;
  • in an example with its own .gitignore (camera_viz, mcap_record_replay, oxr, vehicle_teleop), whatever that file does not list, such as a local uv.lock and build trees, because hatchling reads only the nearest .gitignore and so loses the repo root's rules.

This PR moves only-include (and camera_viz's exclude) from [tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel] to [tool.hatch.build], which both targets read, and keeps sources = ["python"] on the wheel target:

[tool.hatch.build]
only-include = ["python/isaaccapture_examples/<name>"]

[tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel]
sources = ["python"]

The sdist now holds the package tree plus pyproject.toml, PKG-INFO and .gitignore, which is what the wheel is built from. sources stays on the wheel because the sdist must keep the python/ prefix that a wheel build from the sdist looks for. examples/README.md ("Adding an example") shows the new template and says why. It also notes that files the code reads from the example root (teleop_ros2 configs/, vehicle_teleop config/) are therefore not in the sdist; the source tree and the install tree carry them.

Not changed: robot_viz builds with setuptools, whose sdist already holds only the package, README and metadata. rebot has no build backend. [tool.uv.sources] stays the last table in every pyproject that has one, as install_python_example() requires.

Example sdist on main sdist here
vehicle_teleop 15,743 KB 9 KB
noitom 5,058 KB 26 KB
cloudxr_mujoco_teleop 3,449 KB 3,447 KB (the packaged vive_assets/ meshes the modules load)
camera_viz 1,112 KB 89 KB
teleop_ros2 41 KB 25 KB

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

x86_64 / Ubuntu 24.04, uv 0.12.5, hatchling 1.33.0, Python 3.11.

  • SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files passes.
  • All 17 hatchling examples, on main and on this branch: uv build (sdist, then a wheel from that sdist) and uv build --wheel (wheel from the tree). On both, the wheel from the sdist has the same files as the wheel from the tree, and every wheel's file list is identical to main's.
  • Dirty checkout: with an untracked .venv/, uv.lock, build/, recordings/ and a top-level session.mcap in vehicle_teleop, camera_viz, oxr, haptic_feedback and mcap_record_replay, plus codec/build/ and a .so inside camera_viz's package, none of them reaches the sdist or the wheel. On main each sdist took whichever of uv.lock, build/, recordings/ and session.mcap its nearest .gitignore does not list: all four for camera_viz and vehicle_teleop, all but build/ for oxr, all but recordings/ for mcap_record_replay, and only session.mcap for haptic_feedback, which falls back to the repo root's rules. A .mcap placed inside a package directory still reaches both sdist and wheel, as on main.
  • uv pip install --no-deps -e examples/<name> in a fresh venv, for each of the 17: isaaccapture_examples.<name> resolves to examples/<name>/python/isaaccapture_examples/<name>.
  • An independent review pass also checked:
    • the wheels and editable wheels are byte-identical to main's;
    • all 17 examples editable-installed into one venv: the isaaccapture_examples PEP 420 namespace has 17 portions, each resolving to its own source tree;
    • the install tree: cmake/InstallPythonExample.cmake run through a small CMake project over every example, before and after. The generated pyprojects keep both hatch tables, the installed file lists match, and the sdist, wheel and editable builds inside each installed copy match main's.
  • Consumers: no CI job, script, test or Dockerfile builds an example sdist; git grep over docs/, scripts/, tests/, cmake/ and .github/ for only-include, targets.wheel and tool.hatch finds only examples/README.md, updated here.

Not covered yet: nothing. The change touches no runtime code and needs no hardware.

Checklist

  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines
  • I have run the linter and formatter with SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files
  • I have made corresponding changes to the documentation
  • I have added tests that prove my fix/feature works (or explained why not)
  • I have signed off all my commits (git commit -s) per the DCO

No test added: no test builds example dists, and the build comparison above is the check.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Example packages now apply file inclusion rules consistently across build artifacts, helping prevent unrelated files—such as recordings or build outputs—from being packaged.
    • Source distributions retain the directory structure needed for wheel builds.
  • Documentation
    • Updated packaging guidance to clarify how inclusion rules affect source distributions and preserve the expected package layout.

Each example set only-include on the wheel target alone, so `uv build`
packed the whole example directory into the sdist: tracked media (15.7 MB
for vehicle_teleop, 5 MB for noitom), C++ sources, scripts, and, where the
example has its own .gitignore, a local uv.lock and build trees.

Move only-include (and camera_viz's exclude) to [tool.hatch.build], which
both targets read, and keep `sources` on the wheel target. Wheels and
editable installs are unchanged; examples/README.md states the rule.

Walkthrough

The example Hatch configurations move only-include from wheel-specific tables to shared build configuration. The camera_viz configuration also moves exclude. The README explains that shared inclusion settings apply to sdists and that sources remains wheel-specific to preserve the python/ prefix.

An editable install from the teleop_ros2 sdist can no longer start default hand teleoperation without supplying the missing configs separately. Restore them to the sdist before merging.

Keep the DexPilot configs in the sdist.

This selection excludes configs/sharpa_wave_*_dexpilot.yml. When a user runs an editable install from the extracted sdist, node_parameters.py resolves the asset root to that source tree, and session_config.py raises FileNotFoundError for the missing config. This breaks hand_teleop with its default retargeter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add configs to an sdist-specific only-include list while retaining the current wheel selection.

Leaving the packaging as is. An example sdist is not an install source here: nothing builds, publishes or installs one. Everywhere teleop_ros2 actually runs, configs/ is present:

  • source checkout (uv pip install -e examples/teleop_ros2): parents[3] is examples/teleop_ros2/;
  • CMake install tree and the Docker image: examples/teleop_ros2/CMakeLists.txt installs configs/ and assets/ next to the package.

A wheel never carried configs/, so non-editable installs are unchanged, and config_asset_root can point anywhere. Even on main, running dexpilot from an extracted sdist also needed the fetched Sharpa Wave URDFs and the colcon-built teleop_ros2_interfaces. 22fed67 adds a line to examples/README.md saying that files the code reads from the example root are not in the sdist.

Note for anyone who does want them in the sdist: a target-level [tool.hatch.build.targets.sdist] only-include = ["configs"] replaces the shared only-include instead of extending it, so the package drops out of the sdist and uv build still succeeds with an empty wheel. Use [tool.hatch.build.targets.sdist.force-include] instead.

With only-include shared by both targets, the sdist holds only the package,
so files the code resolves from the example root (teleop_ros2 configs/,
vehicle_teleop config/) are not in it. Say so in "Adding an example" and
point at the source tree and install tree, which carry them.
