steps: replace the peak pedometer with a stride-periodicity gait counter - #97
The live strap pedometer under-counted badly. On OxWalk (39 adults, free-living wrist, camera-annotated steps) it had MAPE 33% and read 25% low for anyone who actually walked. One weak footfall reset its confirm run, and its 0.10 g dead-zone dropped gentle walking.
pedometer() now detects gait by stride periodicity (autocorrelation over 4 s windows) and counts steps from the measured cadence. Same signature, and all constants are in seconds.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Step counting now detects stride periodicity and estimates cadence, counting steps during qualifying gait runs of at least 8 seconds.
Live step counting can process buffers containing as few as two samples.
Updates
Pedometer configuration now uses time-based window, cadence, amplitude, regularity, and run-length settings instead of peak-detection settings.
Invalid sample rates and empty signals return zero steps.
Documentation now covers the updated detection approach, validation results, known limitations, and possible missed counts at minute-chunk boundaries.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The Tier A pedometer now detects gait through stride periodicity and counts steps from measured cadence across qualifying runs. Its parameters, live-buffer eligibility, documentation, and tests have changed.

Summary
Periodicity parameters and algorithm description lib/src/onehz/motion/steps.dart, README.md, ALGORITHMS.md, docs/ALGORITHM_CATALOG_1HZ.md
StepParams replaces sample-based peak-detector settings with time-based window, lag, cadence, amplitude, regularity, and minimum-run parameters. The algorithm descriptions now refer to periodicity detection and measured cadence.
Periodicity counting and live behavior lib/src/onehz/motion/steps.dart, lib/src/onehz/motion/motion.dart
The counter filters the signal, decimates it above 50 Hz, and uses normalized autocorrelation to estimate step periods. It counts qualifying runs of at least 8 seconds. livePedometer accepts buffers with at least two samples when the sample rate is positive.
Cadence validation and supporting updates test/onehz/steps_test.dart, tool/oxwalk_validate.dart
Tests cover synthetic cadence, sample rates, chunking, minimum run duration, weak footfalls, and updated parameters and measurements. The OxWalk harness comment describes the 8-second run requirement. Several calorie-test profile declarations are reformatted without changing their values.
The change is mergeable with a small follow-up: reject non-finite rates in livePedometer to avoid invalid durations. Short walks credited through window spill are now explicitly documented.

Replace peak-based step detection with a rate-agnostic stride-periodicity gait counter.
Band-pass acceleration magnitude, optionally decimate above 50 Hz, and analyze four-second windows with normalized autocorrelation.
Select the fundamental cadence, distinguish step period from stride period using lag and half-lag correlation, and count time divided by measured step period.
Gate counting on amplitude, stride autocorrelation hysteresis, and eight-second minimum gait runs.
Move algorithm constants from sample units to seconds and retain the existing pedometer/live-pedometer interfaces.
Document validation results and known limitations, including rhythmic arm motion, cadence bounds, and chunk-boundary losses.
Revise step-counter tests to validate cadence-derived counting, sample-rate independence, edge behavior, and real-world configuration.
Replace legacy peak-detector and interval-bound assertions with synthetic cadence tests across the supported range and documented misread cases.
Add coverage for 25/50/100 Hz inputs, mislabelled rates, short walks, weak footfalls, and per-minute chunking.
Pin the new OxWalk-tuned parameter configuration and update reported wrist, hip, and chunking metrics.

The AN-2554-shaped peak counter scored MAPE 33.0% on OxWalk (39 adults,
free-living dominant wrist, camera ground truth), only 5/39 within +-10%,
and under-counted everyone who actually walked by ~25%: one weak footfall
reset its CONFIRM=8 run and its 0.10 g dead-zone dropped gentle walking.
No sens/confirm setting fixed that without 3-6x over-counting arm work.
The new counter decides gait per 1 s from the autocorrelation of a 4 s
band-passed |a| window: shortest strong period, a step-vs-stride decision
(the two populations separate cleanly on OxWalk), a stride-lag regularity
gate with hysteresis and an 8 s minimum run, then steps = time / measured
step period. All constants are in seconds.
OxWalk, production 60 s chunking, gain 1.00 (tool/oxwalk_validate.dart):
wrist 100 Hz MAPE 33.0% -> 16.7%, within 10% 5 -> 21 of 39,
walkers bias -25.4% -> -10.4%, totals -19.8% -> -7.3%
wrist 50 Hz 33.6% -> 16.9%
wrist 25 Hz 91.9% -> 17.3%
hip 100 Hz 29.5% -> 17.6%
Gate thresholds from a grid search; leave-one-participant-out MAPE 17.5%,
38/39 folds chose the same configuration. Cost: ~1.35 ms per minute of
100 Hz signal (AOT), up from 0.24 ms.
the step/stride decision runs before the 60-240 spm band is checked, so a
step-only signal between ~37.5 and ~67 spm is read as a stride and counted
double, and only below ~37.5 spm is nothing counted. the old note said
everything under 60 spm was dropped, which the code and the 40 spm test
both contradict.

Define handling for non-finite magnitude samples before the band-pass filter.
pedometer accepts any double, including NaN. Once NaN enters the trailing-mean accumulator, every later filtered value is NaN. Windows that overlap or follow that point are rejected, so steps after the first NaN sample in a minute may not be counted. livePedometer and calcSteps pass magnitudes to pedometer without a finite check.
Choose and document a policy for non-finite samples, and state the input contract on pedometer. The repository documents and tests no finite-input contract for this path.

the run was counted in segments, and the last segment of a buffer can be
shorter than a second, so a 7.5 s walk got credited. also say in the doc that
the window around each second lets still seconds next to a short walk join its
run.

Return PedometerResult.none for non-finite sample rates.
206-206: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Return PedometerResult.none for non-finite sample rates.
A NaN sampleRateHz passes the sampleRateHz <= 0 guard. durationS then becomes NaN while steps is 0. Add !sampleRateHz.isFinite to this guard, as _gaitSteps now does.

Review comment at @lib/src/onehz/motion/steps.dart at line 206:
Update the pedometer result path to return PedometerResult.none when
sampleRateHz is non-finite, matching _gaitSteps; ensure the guard applies before
calculating durationS so NaN cannot produce a result with zero steps and a NaN
duration.
The test file checks only 5 s, 7.5 s and 20 s, so no assertion runs a walk whose credited run is exactly StepParams.minRun seconds. At 120 spm, a walk of 8 s produces eight 1.0 s gait segments, and runS equals 8.0. The gate runS >= StepParams.minRun credits that run, but runS > StepParams.minRun would not. Adding this case makes a change from >= to > fail a test. At 120 spm, 8 s is about 16 steps, so the range below covers normal estimation error.
Suggested test addition
test('the minimum run is measured in seconds, not segments', () {
// 7.5 s is eight segments, the last one half a second long.
expect(stepsAt(120, 7.5), 0);
+ // Exactly minRun seconds of gait is credited.+ expect(stepsAt(120, 8), inInclusiveRange(14, 18));
});

Review comment at @test/onehz/steps_test.dart at line 208:
Add an assertion to the minimum-run test using stepsAt(120, 8) and an inclusive
expected range of 14–18, so the test verifies that a run exactly equal to
StepParams.minRun is credited.
