Storage: screens stay responsive during sync (day overview 285 ms → 4 ms behind a held write) - #620
While sync or a recalculation holds a write transaction, the app's screens wait for it. On main every read goes through the one writer connection, so opening Today during a write queues behind it: in a desktop probe with a 300 ms held write, the day overview took 285 ms instead of about 1.4 ms, and none of the five measured reads finished before the write committed.
This PR gives selected screen reads a second, query-only connection to the same SQLite file. With write-ahead logging (WAL) it reads the last committed rows while the writer is busy, so the same reads took 1.4 to 52 ms during the held write and all of them finished before the commit.
What a user sees. Today, the timeline, the RHR chart, sessions and the day list stay responsive while sync or derive is writing; they show the last committed data. Phone behavior and UI frame times are unmeasured. Screen layouts and metric formulas stay the same.
What changes:
A lazy second connection, PRAGMA query_only=ON, used only in the foreground, for eight repository read paths.
In-flight reads drain before the reader closes on backgrounding, database close, wipe, restore or writer reopen.
Everything else stays on the writer, including compute callers and reads that also refresh or clean up stored state. If the reader cannot open in WAL mode, reads fall back to the writer.
Design
The reader opens after writer migrations, schema repair and any rebuild salvage.
It uses singleInstance: false, has no migration or repair callbacks, and sets PRAGMA query_only=ON. The underlying open allows creation of WAL shared memory.
WAL mode is verified through rawQuery, as required for Darwin sqflite.
Failed opens and non-WAL mode fall back to the writer; rejected candidates close.

Session reads propagate the executor to sensor-stamp and decoded-source score masking. getToday freshness refresh/reread and frozenHeadline orphan cleanup stay on
the writer because they can write. getDeviceChart is outside this first set.
The existing app observer enables lazy opening on visible cold start and resume.
Hidden, paused and detached states drain reads and close the reader. Scoped read
leases keep handles alive across awaits; teardown invalidates pending opens.
Close, wipe and restore block new screen leases while changing the store.
Writer reopen retires the reader before reopening or rebuilding the file.
Heavy compute stays on its existing isolate path.
The per-commit synchronous=FULL bracket and commit-before-ACK remain on the
writer. Decoded rows, beats and the trim cursor still commit together before
the verbatim 8-byte HISTORY_END token is acknowledged.
Not in this PR: faster import/sync in the storage PR;
faster recalculation, which needs OpenStrap/analytics#99;
database size. The fork's write-batching half, one transaction for
multi-statement sync/derive side writes, is deliberately left out.
Benchmarks
Main is c8e63556; this PR is one commit, 4a2743b6, on ed/1b-wal-reader.
The host was desktop Linux 7.0.13 aarch64, 8 cores, 7 GB RAM,
Flutter 3.41.6 / Dart 3.11.4. Runs used flutter test with sqflite_common_ffi,
desktop SQLite through FFI under JIT, serially. These are not phone measurements.
The probe creates a temporary file database through the normal schema path.
Its synthetic fixture has 60 days, January 1 through March 1, 2026, with day results,
metric series/version stamps, curves and sleep windows, plus 48 events and one
finished 45-minute session in total. There are no decoded raw rows or sensor
stamps. getSessions is bounded to the final 31 fixture days. Setup, reader opening and two warmups
per read are untimed. Timings include query queueing, SQL and result shaping.
Idle, 50 samples per read per side. All times are milliseconds; p90 uses nearest rank.

During a 300 ms held write, 30 samples per read per side. Each sample inserts
32 fixed-key event rows outside the queried dates, then holds the transaction
open. The read starts 20 ms into that hold; the writer commits on its own timer.

Every read was issued during the hold. Completion counts compare read completion
with the writer transaction future, not a separate SQLite commit timestamp.
Full response digests match across both sides and scenarios; every timed result
also matches its untimed baseline.
This measures queueing behind a controlled write, not derive CPU work, BLE
throughput or phone rendering. Connections and caches are warm, samples share
a growing WAL, and the temporary file may reside on tmpfs. Native sqflite
platform-channel costs and a live store's raw-data volume are outside this probe.
Tests
test/wal_reader_connection_test.dart: 33 passed. Real file-backed tests
cover query-only enforcement, committed/rolled-back visibility, connection
routing, fallback, schema repair ordering, pending opens, read-lease teardown,
wipe/restore invalidation, writer reopen, retry after a failed open, a throwing reader close and multi-device chart coverage. SQL logging checks connection and
transaction IDs. Commit/rollback cases pin FULL/NORMAL and atomic rows, beats
and cursors on the writer.
test/wal_reader_wiring_test.dart: 7 passed. The cold-start lifecycle mapping is
tested as a function for every state. The rest are structural source checks of
the lifecycle observer and BLE HISTORY_END handler, with comments and strings
stripped; they do not execute native lifecycle transitions or radio ACKs.
Both new files together with local_repository_p0_test, db_integrity_test
and startup_and_rebuild_recovery_test: 74 passed, 0 failed in total.
Full suite, flutter test --concurrency=1 on this branch: 6,120 passed, 23 skipped, 0 failed (Linux aarch64, 52 min). The skips are all environment-gated (private real-bundle fixtures, whoop_hist.jsonl, real exports through OPENSTRAP_TEST_DBS); this PR adds none.
I have run this on my own device: Pixel 9a on Android/GrapheneOS.
A rebuild cannot be forced in the test while a live reader holds the WAL:
closing it checkpoints frames back into the main file. The test pins the order:
a reopened writer retires the reader before opening the file again.
Suggested review order
Connection tests: visibility, routing and writer-only durability guards.
db.dart: writer-open ordering, query-only/WAL validation, fallback,
read leases and retirement before close, wipe, restore or reopen.
local_repository_impl.dart: the routed allow-list and executor propagation
through session lookups; check writer defaults and writing read paths.
app.dart and the structural wiring tests, then the desktop probe's limits.

Known issues kept as on main
Separate SELECTs within one screen can still straddle a commit, unchanged from
main. Read leases protect handle lifetime without giving the screen a shared snapshot.
Desktop tests do not cover native Android/iOS locking, WAL checkpoint growth
with a long-lived reader, suspension, or coexistence with the coach's read-only
connection. Native platform behavior still needs device testing.
Questions for reviewers
Is the routed allow-list the right first set, or should more screens move in this PR?
Do you see a platform concern with a foreground-only reader, closed in the
background, versus keeping it open, especially iOS background behavior or
Android low-memory handling?
Summary by Sourcery
Keep key foreground screens responsive during database writes by serving their committed reads from a lifecycle-managed WAL reader connection.
New Features:
Add a foreground-only, query-only SQLite reader connection that serves selected screen reads concurrently with writer transactions using WAL.
Bug Fixes:
Prevent screen reads from blocking behind sync or recalculation writes while preserving committed-data visibility and writer-only state-changing reads.
Ensure reader lifecycle, failed opens, store resets, restores, and writer reopen operations do not leak handles or race with in-flight reads.
Enhancements:
Route day overviews, timelines, charts, sessions, sleep windows, insights, and available-day queries through the reader while keeping compute and mutating read paths on the writer.
Propagate read executors through session, metric, event, and provenance lookups so composite screen reads consistently use the selected connection.
Tie reader availability to app lifecycle transitions and retain existing writer durability and commit-before-ack guarantees.
Every screen read shared the one writer connection, so a sync or derive
holding a write transaction made the screens wait behind it. Under WAL a
second connection can read the last committed state while a write is open.
- LocalDb opens a lazy second connection to the same file after the writer
has opened, migrated and repaired the schema: no migration callbacks,
PRAGMA query_only=ON, WAL verified (journal_mode through rawQuery). If it
cannot open, or the file is not in WAL mode, reads fall back to the writer.
- The reader exists only while the app is in the foreground. The app
lifecycle observer enables it on a visible cold start and on resume, and
hidden/paused/detached drain in-flight read leases and close it. close(),
wipe, restore merge and a writer reopen or rebuild retire it first.
- Only an explicit list of read-only repository paths use it (day overview,
latest bundle, cross-day artifact, available days, sleep windows, the RHR
chart, the day timeline and sessions). Every other LocalDb caller,
including compute, stays on the writer, and so do getToday's freshness
refresh and frozenHeadline's orphan cleanup, which write.
The sync commit path is unchanged: the per-commit synchronous=FULL bracket
and commit-before-ACK stay on the writer.
This PR introduces a lazily opened, foreground-only SQLite WAL reader for selected screen queries, coordinating leases and lifecycle teardown so screens can read committed data while the writer is busy, while preserving writer-only paths and durability semantics through extensive regression tests.

Adds a foreground-only, query-only WAL reader connection with lifecycle-safe acquisition, fallback, and retirement.
Opens the reader lazily only after writer migrations, repair, or rebuild completion.
Validates WAL mode and query-only behavior, rejecting and closing unsuitable candidates.
Tracks reader epochs, pending opens, and read leases so backgrounding, close, wipe, restore, and writer reopen cannot invalidate in-flight work.
Falls back to the writer when the reader is unavailable or the app is not foregrounded.
lib/data/db.dart
Routes an explicit allow-list of screen-facing stored reads through the reader while preserving writer affinity for reads that can write or support compute.
Adds executor parameters to shared database helpers and propagates the executor through session sensor and decoded-source masking queries.
Moves day overviews, insights baselines, available days, sleep windows, RHR chart data, timelines, and sessions to scoped reader leases.
Keeps freshness refresh/reread, frozen-headline cleanup, compute callers, and other non-selected paths on the writer.

<issue_to_address>
**Foreground reads stay queued**
When reader opening or configuration fails transiently while the writer remains open, `_openReader` sets `_readerFailedFor`, and later acquisitions return the writer without retrying; screens stay queued behind writes until reader retirement clears the marker.
Retry reader acquisition after a failed open instead of keeping `_readerFailedFor` set until retirement.

+ await _writerOpening;
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Close leaves a concurrent open alive**
When `close()` runs while `_writerOpening` is null and another caller requests `LocalDb.instance` before the close action completes, `close` awaits the current `_writerOpening` only once; `LocalDb.instance` can start `_openWriter` after that await observes no opening, so `close` returns while the new writer remains open.
Make writer acquisition participate in the close barrier, or coordinate close and writer opens so close drains any open started during its operation.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Charts wait behind writes**
When a chart supplies signals, its version rows identify at least two devices, and a write transaction is active, `coverageDevicesByDay` uses `LocalDb.instance` instead of the chart's reader executor, so its query queues behind the writer and stalls the chart; its coverage attribution can also reflect a different write state than the reader-routed metric rows.
Run `coverageDevicesByDay` through the same reader executor as the chart's other reads.

<issue_to_address>
**Cold start check accepts disabled reader**
When `initState` retains those tokens but passes `false` for a visible lifecycle state, the `visible cold start enables lazy reads` test checks only that `initState` contains `LocalDb.setForeground(` and `lifecycleState`; it passes if the call always supplies `false`, leaving visible cold-start reads on the writer.
Assert that the foreground/background lifecycle states map to the expected `setForeground` values, preferably by testing the mapping's behavior.

<issue_to_address>
**Freshness test races local midnight**
When the test's refresh and final `todayLabel()` call straddle local midnight, the `getToday freshness refresh and reread stay on writer` test compares the refreshed row's `today_day` with a fresh `todayLabel()` call at line 475; if the refresh and assertion straddle local midnight, the correct prior-day row fails the test.
Freeze the clock for this test or assert against a label captured consistently with the refresh.

…he reader
- A throwing reader close() in _retireReader is swallowed like the one in
_openReader: Android may already have closed the read-only handle, and
backgrounding, wipe, restore and close must still go through.
- getChart's multi-device coverage query runs on the same read executor as
the chart's other reads instead of queueing behind the writer.
- The cold-start lifecycle mapping is a function with a behavioral test, and
the getToday freshness test accepts the day label from either side of the
call, so it cannot fail across local midnight.

Heavy passes derive days concurrently. A worker preparing an aged day reads
tonight's sleep window from the next day's committed result, which may not
be stored yet. The day was finalized on age alone, so whichever order the
workers finished in was banked permanently: one run counted the next
night's sleep as daytime (more daytime samples, HRV buckets and zone
points) and the other did not. derive_unchanged_skip_test caught this as a
flaky snapshot mismatch on this branch's CI.
An aged day now finalizes only once its prepared night matches the next
day's committed complete result at the current version, or the next day
has no input to derive. Forced finalization is unchanged. kAlgoVersion
118 -> 119 so days already locked under the race re-derive where raw data
remains.
Regression test in wal_reader_connection_test.dart fails on the previous
head (finalized=1) and passes here.

thanks — the derive race is already fixed in #658, so could you drop 41e8127 from this one? and close() shouldn't rethrow when the writer failed to open, just swallow it there.
The previous fix checked the next day's committed sleep window while the
day was being written. Within one pass, another worker can still be
re-deriving that next day (new input, a changed sleep override) and replace
its window afterwards, so a day could still be locked against the old
window. Age-eligible days are now stored unfinalized and finalized only
after every day worker (and the quiet repass) has joined, if the window they
consumed still matches the stored next night. Otherwise they stay pending
for a later pass. Same kAlgoVersion bump (119) as the previous commit.
Also: LocalDb.close() no longer throws when an in-flight writer open fails;
the opener's caller already gets that error, and close still closes any
live handle.
Both fixes have regression tests in wal_reader_connection_test.dart that
fail on the previous head.

Main's OpenStrap#658 fixes the same finalization race this branch fixed in
41e8127 and ba7bd59 (a day finalized before the next night was stored),
and OpenStrap#659 took kAlgoVersion 119. Take main's derivation_engine.dart and drop
this branch's duplicate fix, its 118 -> 119 bump and its two derive
regression tests; main's derive_tonight_pending_test covers the case.
Kept from ba7bd59: LocalDb.close() no longer throws when an in-flight
writer open fails, with its two tests.

PRAGMA query_only=ON, used only in the foreground, for eight repository read paths.Design
The reader opens after writer migrations, schema repair and any rebuild salvage.
It uses
singleInstance: false, has no migration or repair callbacks, and setsPRAGMA query_only=ON. The underlying open allows creation of WAL shared memory.WAL mode is verified through
rawQuery, as required for Darwin sqflite.Failed opens and non-WAL mode fall back to the writer; rejected candidates close.
getDayOverview/_bundledayResult_latestBundlerecentDayResultsgetInsights/_crossDayArtifactavailableDayssleepWindowsgetChart('rhr')getDayTimelinegetSessionsSession reads propagate the executor to sensor-stamp and decoded-source score masking.
getTodayfreshness refresh/reread andfrozenHeadlineorphan cleanup stay onthe writer because they can write.
getDeviceChartis outside this first set.The existing app observer enables lazy opening on visible cold start and resume.
The per-commit
synchronous=FULLbracket and commit-before-ACK remain on thewriter. Decoded rows, beats and the trim cursor still commit together before
the verbatim 8-byte

faster recalculation, which needs OpenStrap/analytics#99;
database size. The fork's write-batching half, one transaction for
multi-statement sync/derive side writes, is deliberately left out.
Benchmarks
Main is
c8e63556; this PR is one commit,4a2743b6, oned/1b-wal-reader.The host was desktop Linux 7.0.13 aarch64, 8 cores, 7 GB RAM,
Flutter 3.41.6 / Dart 3.11.4. Runs used
flutter testwithsqflite_common_ffi,desktop SQLite through FFI under JIT, serially.
There are no decoded raw rows or sensor
stamps.
getSessionsis bounded to the final 31 fixture days. Setup, reader opening and two warmupsper read are untimed. Timings include query queueing, SQL and result shaping.
Idle, 50 samples per read per side. All times are milliseconds; p90 uses nearest rank.
getDayOverviewgetDayTimelinegetChart('rhr')getSessionsavailableDaysIdle
getDayTimelineis slower: p90 rises from about 3.6 to 5.5 ms, and its medianalso rises. Idle day overview p90 is slightly slower too.
During a 300 ms held write, 30 samples per read per side. Each sample inserts
32 fixed-key event rows outside the queried dates, then holds the transaction
open. The read starts 20 ms into that hold; the writer commits on its own timer.
getDayOverviewgetDayTimelinegetChart('rhr')getSessionsavailableDaysEvery read was issued during the hold.
Real file-backed testscover query-only enforcement, committed/rolled-back visibility, connection
routing, fallback, schema repair ordering, pending opens, read-lease teardown,
wipe/restore invalidation, writer reopen, retry after a failed open, a throwing reader close and multi-device chart coverage. SQL logging checks connection and
transaction IDs. Commit/rollback cases pin FULL/NORMAL and atomic rows, beats
and cursors on the writer.
test/wal_reader_wiring_test.dart: 7 passed. The cold-start lifecycle mapping istested as a function for every state. The rest are structural source checks of
the lifecycle observer and BLE
HISTORY_ENDhandler, with comments and stringsstripped; they do not execute native lifecycle transitions or radio ACKs.

startup_and_rebuild_recovery_test: 74 passed, 0 failed in total.flutter test --concurrency=1on this branch: 6,120 passed, 23 skipped, 0 failed (Linux aarch64, 52 min). The skips are all environment-gated (private real-bundle fixtures,whoop_hist.jsonl, real exports throughOPENSTRAP_TEST_DBS); this PR adds none.I have run this on my own device: Pixel 9a on Android/GrapheneOS.
A rebuild cannot be forced in the test while a live reader holds the WAL:
closing it checkpoints frames back into the main file. The test pins the order:
a reopened writer retires the reader before opening the file again.
Suggested review order
db.dart: writer-open ordering, query-only/WAL validation, fallback, read leases and retirement before close, wipe, restore or reopen.
local_repository_impl.dart: the routed allow-list and executor propagationthrough session lookups; check writer defaults and writing read paths.

Questions for reviewers
background, versus keeping it open, especially iOS background behavior or
Android low-memory handling?
