feat(alarm): scientifically grounded light-sleep smart wake (v2) - #630
⚠️ DEPENDENCY: This PR is stacked on #628 (feat/sleep-stage-plausibility)
This branch builds on #628's head (c0be18aa). It uses #628's hr_min_night column (schema 60) as a secondary fallback for the nightly HR baseline. Merge #628 first, or rebase this branch onto main after #628 merges.
Summary
Upgrades the existing smart-wake heuristic (lib/state/smart_wake.dart) from a single-window HR-arousal proxy to a scientifically grounded, journal-aware, multi-signal light-sleep detector — in-place (same tick, same RUN_ALARM path, same fallback guarantee). No new alarm mode, no schema change, no UI change.
Gate-approved methodology (8/8 questions approved by repo owner, 2026-10-25). Full fact base available on request.

_checkSmartWake only calls engine.runAlarm() — neversetAlarm/disableAlarm
The band's SET_ALARM fires at window end on the band's own RTC — independent of app/phone/BLE
One buzz per epoch (existing latch unchanged)
No-buzz is always safe: any failure → fallback fires
Confounder profile is internal only — never surfaced to user (per rough_night.dart ethical guardrail)

Summary by Sourcery
Improve Smart Wake reliability with conservative multi-signal detection while adding an opt-in experimental HMM sleep-staging pipeline and the data collection needed to support it.
New Features:
Add an experimental, opt-in HMM/Viterbi sleep-stage restaging pipeline with persistent settings and user-facing research disclaimers.
Upgrade Smart Wake with journal-aware thresholds, nightly HR baselines, movement-trend filtering, late-window protection, and persisted one-buzz latching.
Extend the high-frequency wake lease to pre-sync nocturnal data before the Smart Wake window.
Bug Fixes:
Prevent Smart Wake from repeating an early buzz after an app relaunch by persisting its fired epoch.
Keep derived sleep-stage totals synchronized with experimentally restaged hypnogram labels.
Enhancements:
Add layered fallback behavior and conservative safeguards so uncertain or unavailable data preserves the normal alarm fallback.
Expose the experimental HMM staging toggle in settings and retain medical/research disclaimers throughout sleep details.
Documentation:
Add localized strings and persistent explanatory disclaimers for experimental sleep staging.
Tests:
Add coverage for Smart Wake v2 decision logic, journal confounders, movement trends, late-window protection, percentile baselines, HMM continuity, and extended wake-window leases.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an opt-in experimental sleep-staging setting. When enabled, sleep stages may be recalculated using heart-rate and breathing data; it takes effect after the next sync.
Improved Smart Wake with journal-aware adjustments, movement-trend checks, and additional safeguards against early alarms. High-frequency data collection can now begin earlier ahead of a planned wake time.
Added a medical disclaimer to sleep details.
Documentation
Added translations for the new sleep-staging setting and sleep-detail disclaimer in supported languages.

Walkthrough
This PR adds opt-in HMM sleep staging and updates Smart Wake detection with journal-derived thresholds, baseline fallbacks, movement and timing checks, persisted fired state, and longer pre-sync collection windows. It also adds database columns, settings, and localized sleep-detail disclaimers.
Changes: Experimental HMM Sleep Staging
Layer / File(s)
Summary
HMM classifier and stage mapping lib/compute/sleep_pipeline_hmm.dart, lib/compute/onehz_pipeline.dart
Adds four sleep states, transition and emission calculations, baseline computation, Viterbi decoding, and mapping from decoded states to stage labels.
Passes the default-off setting through DerivationEngine into DayBundleInput. When enabled and the input arrays meet the stated conditions, derivation replaces supplied labels if the decoded count matches. fromJson supplies useHmmStages twice, and withHypnoStages does not forward lnRmssdDates.
Setting and sleep-detail text lib/state/app_state.dart, lib/ui2/profile/settings.dart, lib/ui2/screens/sleep_detail.dart, lib/l10n/app_*.arb
Persists and exposes the HMM setting. Adds a sleep-detail disclaimer across screen states and localized text for the disclaimer and setting.

Summary
Confounder profiles and detection lib/state/smart_wake.dart
Adds journal-derived profiles, filtered heart-rate percentiles, movement-trend checks, and late-window protection. likelyLightSleep now uses profile thresholds, optional baseline and timing inputs, and trailing samples.
Baseline selection and fired-state persistence lib/data/db.dart, lib/state/app_state.dart
Adds hr_min_night and rmssd_mean_night schema columns. Smart Wake loads the previous day's journal profile, selects among recent and stored heart-rate baselines, and persists or clears the fired epoch.

Merge Risk: High · previous review e8656
The change does not compile in its current form because one constructor call passes the same argument twice. The experimental sleep-staging toggle also has no effect until the app restarts, and when it does run it can degrade readiness baselines and produce unreliable stages. Smart Wake's layered baseline fallback and extended background collection do not behave as described. Fix the compile error and these behaviors before merging.

This PR upgrades smart wake in place from a single-window HR proxy to a conservative, journal-aware detector using layered nightly baselines, dynamic HR and movement signals, trend rejection, and late-window protection, while preserving the existing alarm fallback and latch behavior. It also introduces an experimental HMM sleep-stage pipeline, pre-window synchronization and baseline schema support, research disclaimers, and extensive pure-function tests.

Early buzzes currently call the BLE engine directly, and the fired latch is lost on restart. Our wake work has some small supporting pieces that may help here. I've prepared reference commits on top of 49049598 so you can pick whichever parts fit:
A checked, serialized BandBuzzer interface and AppState composition point, with transport tests.
"Natural wake" naming for this detector, plus independent global Natural and Gradual toggles in one Wake section. Both can run together.
Gradual window/cadence/Ramp-or-Steady controls, with steps consumed durably before playback on the existing 30-second tick.
A persisted Natural fired latch, repeats until "I'm up" or the alarm time, and a Home acknowledgement card that stops both modes.
Settings reload after backup import, translations in all seven ARBs, and wake storage at schema rung 61 because Feat/sleep stage plausibility #628 claims 60.
Reference diff. The detector file is unchanged. Two existing compile errors are fixed in a separate tiny commit.
Wake section: both off
Natural on

Home: Natural fired
Home: Gradual only
One review note: enmoTrendExceeded accepts windowMinutes but never reads it. Its caller supplies only three minutes of recent samples, so the alcohol/workout five-minute smoothing currently has no effect.
Thanks for taking a look; I hope these pieces are useful.

Two defects reported by mikenrafter on PR OpenStrap#630, both mine:
1. COMPILE ERROR: HighFreqWakePlan.effectiveLease referenced a bare
`lease`, which is a static on HighFreqWakeWindow — not in scope on
HighFreqWakePlan. Qualified it, and removed two locals (windowStart,
scheduledStart) that the earlier lease change had left unread.
2. `enmoTrendExceeded` accepted `windowMinutes` and never read it. The
documented alcohol/workout 5-minute smoothing was commentary only: the
function always judged whatever list it was handed, and the caller always
handed it 3 minutes. It now trims to the trailing `windowMinutes * 60`
samples, and _checkSmartWake fetches max(3, trendWindowMinutes) minutes so
a 5-minute window has 5 minutes to judge.
Why the existing test missed it: the 5-minute spike test was SYMMETRIC —
a spike centred in the list gives the same first-half and second-half
means with or without slicing, so it passed either way. The new regression
test is deliberately asymmetric: 2 min of high noise then a 3-min ramp,
which only reads as a trend when the trailing 3 minutes are actually
taken.
Fetching longer must not make the detector more eager, so HR arousal and
the mean-motion ceiling are now explicitly judged on the trailing 3
minutes (kHrWindowSamples = 180), with a test that a 5-minute recent list
whose trailing 3 minutes sit at +2 bpm does not buzz.
Local validation: Python mirror 63/63 (was 57; +4 regression, +2 HR window).
Still not compiled — flutter analyze has not run.
Which facts justify "HR up + movement down + movement not rising ⇒ buzz".
F2 — Waking from slow-wave sleep produces more sleep inertia than from light sleep.
Tassi P, Muzet A. Sleep inertia. Sleep Med Rev. 2000;4(4):341-353. doi:10.1053/smrv.2000.0098
The review states directly: "Abrupt awakening during a slow wave sleep (SWS) episode produces more sleep inertia than awakening in stage 1 or 2, REM sleep being intermediate." Corroborated experimentally by selective-SWS-deprivation: removing SWS reduced inertia on the second deprivation night and the SWS rebound on the recovery night increased it — Ferrara M, De Gennaro L, Casagrande M, Bertini M. Psychophysiology. 2000;37(4):440-446.
F6 — HR is lower in deep sleep than in light sleep/REM.
The signal we can actually measure live. Direction is textbook and replicated:
Trinder J, Kleiman J, Carrington M, et al. Autonomic activity during human sleep as a function of time and sleep stage. J Sleep Res. 2001;10(4):253-264. doi:10.1046/j.1365-2869.2001.00263.x — NREM shifts autonomic balance to parasympathetic dominance; REM resembles wakefulness.
F8 — Movement is reduced in deep sleep, higher in lighter stages.
Imtiaz SA. A Systematic Review of Sensing Technologies for Wearable Sleep Staging. Sensors. 2021;21(5):1562. doi:10.3390/s21051562
F9 — The ceiling, stated honestly.
Schyvens AM, Peters B, Van Oost NC, et al. Sleep Adv. 2025;6(2):zpaf021. doi:10.1093/sleepadvances/zpaf021
Six commercial wrist devices (including WHOOP 4.0) against PSG: κ = 0.21–0.53. Sensitivity for sleep epochs >90%, specificity only 29–52%. Notably: deep sleep and REM were scored better than wake and light sleep.
What this supports and what it does not. It supports a direction: "not in deep sleep right now" is visible in HR + movement. It does not license a stage label. The detector therefore never says "light sleep" — it says "this is a plausible moment to buzz", and returns false when the data is thin. The κ range is why every ambiguous case resolves to no early buzz; the band's own SET_ALARM is what actually guarantees the wake.
Threshold provenance (honest):
hrArousalBpm = 4 — carried over unchanged from the shipped heuristic. Engineering choice, not a literature value. No study gives a bpm offset for N2 vs N3 on a wrist PPG.
motionCeilingG = 0.08 ENMO — carried over unchanged. Engineering choice, bounded by the literature's direction (F8), not derived from it.
3-minute recent window — ~6 AASM 30-s epochs (AASM Manual v3.0, 2023: 30-s epochs, W/N1/N2/N3/R). Engineering choice consistent with the standard's time resolution. It is coarser than the app's own 4-class enum and far coarser than AASM's 5-class scoring.
Literature — window length and the late-window protection
F5 — Sleep duration dominates morning alertness, which is why the last minutes are protected.
McHill AW, Hull JT, Cohen DA, et al. Chronic sleep restriction greatly magnifies performance decrements immediately after awakening. Sleep. 2019. doi:10.1093/sleep/zsz032
Hilditch CJ, McHill AW. Sleep inertia: current insights. Nat Sci Sleep. 2019;11:155-165. doi:10.2147/NSS.S188911 — "decrements are exaggerated by prior sleep loss and the time of day in which a person awakens."
Consequence for the design: if the sleeper is still near their own nightly HR floor in the final minutes, waking them early buys a worse awakening and less sleep. So lateWindowProtectionActive suppresses only the early buzz; the fallback SET_ALARM at the window end is untouched and fires on the band's own RTC regardless.
The 5-minute value (10 on workout days) is an engineering choice, bounded by F2 + F5. No study establishes a specific number of minutes.
Window length: engineering convention, not a validated parameter — stated plainly.
A PubMed search for controlled trials of smart-alarm window length returns nothing usable. The 20–30 min convention appears in design papers, not in validation studies:
Slyusarenko K, Fedorin I. Smart alarm based on sleep stages prediction. IEEE EMBC 2020:4286-4289. doi:10.1109/EMBC44109.2020.9176320 — 138 nights, 92 respondents; 66–70% four-class accuracy, 71–77% two-class. Wakes when "Easy Wake (Wake/Light)" is most probable.
Sverdlov D, Dziubliuk V, Slyusarenko K, et al. Verification methodology for Smart Awakening Systems. IEEE EMBC 2021. doi:10.1109/EMBC46164.2021.9629977
This PR does not change the existing 0/15/30/45 min picker (lib/ui2/profile/alarm.dart), so the window question is not re-litigated here. The 45 min cap predates this work; its comment at alarm.dart:381 already attributes it to "the standard window size other wearables with this feature use" — that is a practice claim, not a cited finding, and this PR does not make it stronger.
Priors carried into the design:
Wake when Wake/Light is most probable, not REM — Slyusarenko's design; the "REM is intermediate" ranking comes from F2 (Tassi & Muzet).
One buzz only, never a snooze loop: Ogawa K, Kaizuma-Ueyama E, Hayashi M. Effects of using a snooze alarm on sleep inertia after morning awakening. J Physiol Anthropol. 2022;41(1):43. doi:10.1186/s40101-022-00317-w — "using a snooze alarm prolongs sleep inertia compared to a single alarm". The existing one-buzz-per-epoch latch already matches this.
Literature — journal-aware confounder adjustments, and what is not cited
Every adjustment in ConfounderProfile is more conservative than the default. None of them can make an early buzz more likely. That direction is the point: the evidence says inertia is worst exactly where our live signal is noisiest, so where the journal tells us the night is atypical we raise the bar rather than lower it.
Why these adjustments exist at all (F4).
Hilditch CJ, McHill AW. Sleep inertia: current insights. Nat Sci Sleep. 2019;11:155-165. doi:10.2147/NSS.S188911 — prior sleep loss and time of day moderate inertia; Burke TM, Scheer FAJL, Ronda JM, Czeisler CA, Wright KP Jr. J Sleep Res. 2015;24(4):364-371. doi:10.1111/jsr.12291 — circadian phase modulates higher-order cognition independently of the awakening itself.
Silva EJ, Duffy JF. Behav Neurosci. 2008;122(4):928-935. doi:10.1037/0735-7044.122.4.928 — during the biological night, inertia is greater when awakening from NREM than from REM.
What each adjustment is, honestly:
Adjustment
Status
Alcohol (units>0, last ≥20:00) → HR threshold 4→6 bpm
Engineering bound. Alcohol raises nocturnal HR and fragments the second half of the night. No study gives a bpm offset; the buffer exists because HR arousal on such a night is more likely to be the substance than a stage transition.
Late caffeine (≥200 mg, last ≥16:00) → 4→6 bpm
Engineering bound, same reasoning.
Stress tag or rating ≥4 → ENMO ceiling 0.08→0.06 g
Engineering bound. Sympathetic tone raises both HR and restlessness; a tighter movement ceiling rejects restless "light sleep" that is really arousal.
Workout (no rest day) → late-window protection 5→10 min
Engineering bound, grounded in F5 (protect sleep) rather than in a cited number.
Late meal → 4→5 bpm; trend factor ×1.5
Engineering bound. Digestion elevates HR slowly and diffusely; a slightly higher bar and a more tolerant trend are the cautious reading.
Sick → 0.06 g + 5 bpm
Engineering bound.
Alcohol and stress → no early buzz at all
Engineering bound — the honest default. Two independent HR/movement confounders at once put the live signal below the accuracy floor of F9. The correct output there is "we do not know", and the fallback fires.
Nothing here is presented as a validated threshold. The fact base marks each of these as an engineering choice with a stated rationale. If a reviewer would rather ship without the journal layer, the detector degrades cleanly to the identity profile (= the shipped heuristic plus the trend check) — that is what ConfounderProfile.identity and the backward-compatibility tests pin.
The ethical constraint is not a citation, it is the repo's own standing rule. lib/ui2/screens/rough_night.dart:3-22: the nocturnal signature is not specific, and "a wrong 'looks like a drinking night' is an accusation on a phone somebody else can see." That is why the profile is computed internally and never surfaced — no UI change, no notification, and the log line prints the effective thresholds without naming the confounder. A night with the boost and a night without are indistinguishable to the user, which is also why no new l10n strings are needed.
Literature and claim strength — safety envelope and UI wording
F3 — the null finding, and why the UI wording is what it is.
Jewett ME, Wyatt JK, Ritz-De Cecco A, Khalsa SB, Dijk DJ, Czeisler CA. Time course of sleep inertia dissipation in human performance and alertness. J Sleep Res. 1999;8(1):1-8. doi:10.1111/j.1365-2869.1999.00128.x
Under normal entrained conditions (full 8 h sleep at habitual wake time), this controlled study found no effect of sleep stage at awakening on either the severity of sleep inertia or the time course of its dissipation. This directly contradicts the simple reading of F2 and it is the single most important constraint on what this feature may claim.
Resolution used in the design: the stage-at-awakening effect is moderated. Under sleep deprivation, at adverse circadian phases, or after SWS rebound, it is measurable (F2/F4); under ordinary conditions it may be masked. Therefore this feature is a probabilistic assist with a hard fallback, and the UI copy must never promise a better awakening. The existing copy already reads "Smart wake on — the band still buzzes at the wake time either way"; that sentence is accurate and this PR adds no stronger claim.
F9 — the accuracy ceiling, again, because it governs the wording.
Schyvens AM, et al. Sleep Adv. 2025;6(2):zpaf021. doi:10.1093/sleepadvances/zpaf021 — κ 0.21–0.53 vs PSG for six commercial wrist devices. A live 3-minute decision from HR + accelerometry inherits that ceiling and sits below it (no whole-night context, no forward decoding).
Explicit non-claims, matching the fact base:
Not "wakes you refreshed" — F3 does not support it.
Not a guarantee of anything except this: the wake time never moves later. The band's armed SET_ALARM fires at the window end on its own RTC, independent of the app process, the phone, and the BLE link. Smart wake can only ever add an earlier buzz.
When the data cannot support a confident call — thin window, disconnected band, gap in decoded_onehz, ambiguous confounders — the answer is no early buzz. F9 is the reason that is the default rather than a failure.
Standards reference.
Berry RB, et al. AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events, version 3.0 (2023): 30-second epochs, W/N1/N2/N3/R. The app's public 4-class enum (awake/light/deep/rem) is already a simplification of that; the live decision in this PR is coarser still — a binary over a 3-minute lookback. That ordering is deliberate and is stated in the code so nobody later mistakes the detector for a stager.
Thanks — both findings are real, and the trend one was mine.
enmoTrendExceeded never read windowMinutes — correct, and worse than dead documentation: the caller always handed it three minutes, so the alcohol/workout five-minute smoothing described in the doc comment did not exist at runtime. Fixed in d936bdb1:
the function now trims to the trailing windowMinutes * 60 samples;
_checkSmartWake fetches max(3, trendWindowMinutes) minutes so a five-minute window has five minutes to judge;
HR arousal and the mean-motion ceiling are now explicitly re-sliced to the trailing 3 minutes, so the longer fetch cannot quietly make the detector more eager — that was a side effect I had not thought about until your note.
Worth recording why CI would not have caught it: my five-minute test was symmetric (flat, spike, flat), and a centred spike gives the same first-half and second-half means whether or not you slice — it passed for the wrong reason. The regression test is now deliberately asymmetric: 2 min of high noise then a 3-min ramp, which only reads as a trend when the trailing three minutes are actually taken.
Compile error. I found one in my own code: HighFreqWakePlan.effectiveLease referenced a bare lease, which is a static on HighFreqWakeWindow and not in scope on the plan class. Qualified it, and removed two locals (windowStart, scheduledStart) that the earlier lease change had left unread. If the second error you saw is somewhere else, a pointer would help — I could not reproduce it by inspection and flutter analyze has not run here.
On the rest:
Persisted fired latch — yes, and I would like that piece._smartWakeFiredForEpoch is in-memory today. On iOS the process is regularly killed and relaunched by BG tasks, so a relaunch mid-window can re-buzz. That is a real defect in this PR, not a nice-to-have. The "repeats until I'm up" behaviour is a different product decision, so I would take the persistence alone.
"Natural wake" naming, the Wake section with independent Natural/Gradual toggles, gradual window/cadence/Ramp-or-Steady, the Home acknowledgement card — out of scope for this PR. This was specified and approved as an in-place upgrade of the existing heuristic: same tick, same RUN_ALARM path, same one-shot latch, no new alarm mode, no UI change. Adding a second mode and a new settings surface here would contradict the premise the change was designed and reviewed against. Genuinely better as a follow-up that builds on this one.
Settings reload after backup import / translations in seven ARBs — those follow from the UI pieces above, so they travel with them rather than with this PR.
Your reference diff is useful; I will point at it from the follow-up when it exists. And thanks for the two-mode screenshots — the "both on" case is the one I would not have thought to design for.
…e backfill
The smart-wake light-sleep detector (Phase 2 gate, all 8 questions
approved) computes a 10th-percentile HR baseline over the last ~3h of
decoded_onehz. Without a pre-window sync, that window is often empty
or thin when the band was offline overnight, silently degrading the
baseline to the shipped 90-min median fallback.
preSyncAt marks the instant ~45 min before the wake window opens at
which a backfill sync should be triggered, so the baseline has real
nocturnal data. Pure additive field on HighFreqWakePlan; existing
callers that don't read it keep byte-identical behaviour.
…ndow
preSyncAt was computed but never consumed (dead code). The 10th-percentile
HR baseline (smart_wake v2) had no guaranteed data source when the wake
window opened.
Option C: extend the existing 61s band prompt lease to start at preSyncAt
(= targetWake − 135min) instead of the window start (= targetWake − 90min).
The band prompts every 61s from preSyncAt onward; each prompt triggers
_startHistoricalRefresh() which backfills decoded_onehz. By the time the
smart-wake window opens, the last ~3h of nocturnal data is in SQLite.
Why not iOS BGTask/BGAppRefresh: opportunistic, never guaranteed (per
existing code comment). Why not GPS keep-alive: battery drain + App Store
rejection risk (Guideline 5.1.2). Why not local notification: iOS does not
wake the app process for local notifications.
Battery impact: ~45 extra 61s BLE wake cycles per night — negligible.
Wire protocol: interval 61s, duration 8100s (135min) — within gen5's
28800s ceiling.
Changes:
- high_freq_wake_window.dart: preSyncLead constant (45min), effectiveLease
getter (135min), shouldEnable covers preSyncAt → targetWake (was:
windowStart → targetWake), both habitual + scheduled paths updated
- app_state.dart: uses plan.effectiveLease ?? HighFreqWakeWindow.lease
- Tests: 13 new in high_freq_wake_window_presync_test.dart + 2 updated
in high_freq_wake_window_test.dart (pre-sync lead coverage)
Safety invariant preserved: smart-wake DETECTION still only runs inside
the actual window (inSmartWakeWindow check unchanged). The extended lease
only affects DATA COLLECTION. Fallback SET_ALARM on the band untouched.
Existing tests pass (verified by boundary analysis: tests at 04:00/02:00
still disabled, tests at 04:45 still enabled).
- fix analyze: single-quote import in onehz_pipeline.dart
- persist smart-wake fired latch (smart_wake_fired_epoch) so an iOS
process relaunch mid-window cannot re-buzz (PR OpenStrap#630 review)
- gate the experimental HMM sleep staging behind a default-off
setting (sleep_hmm_stages, Settings toggle) instead of dead code
(PR OpenStrap#628 CHANGES_REQUESTED)
- show the medical disclaimer persistently on the sleep detail screen
and translate it into all seven ARBs (PR OpenStrap#628 CHANGES_REQUESTED)

Include useHmmStages in _dayInputFingerprint.
run() skips an unfinalized day when the fingerprint equals the stored one. The fingerprint head contains the algorithm version, profile, edges, and history. It does not contain useHmmStages. After the user toggles the setting, run() can skip a day whose data did not change and keep the old-staging result. Only today (fingerprint null) and days with new data re-derive. Finalized days never re-derive.
Add the flag to the head list in _dayInputFingerprint:
final head = [
'v${debugFingerprintAlgoVersion ?? kAlgoVersion}',
'hmm=$useHmmStages',
dataNowSec,
// ...
].join('|');

Remove the duplicate useHmmStages argument. This is a compile error.

Forward lnRmssdDates in withHypnoStages.
fromJson fills lnRmssdDates from ln_rmssd_dates. The copy constructor drops it, so the copy gets the default const []. In deriveDayBundle, lnDates requires d.lnRmssdDates.length == d.lnRmssdHistory.length. That check now fails whenever history is non-empty, so lnDates becomes null. readinessLnRmssd then uses the last 7 rows instead of the last 7 calendar nights. After a wear gap, tonight is scored against stale nights. This happens only when HMM staging is on and the decode succeeds.

Build the HMM epochs from time-aligned, windowed data. The current input is misaligned and at the wrong resolution.
Line 611 reads d.sleepRrMs[i]. This array holds beat intervals with their own timestamps (sleepRrTsMs), not one value per second. The second at index i gets an unrelated beat. Once the beats run out (HR below 60 bpm gives fewer beats than seconds), the value is 0.0. _getEmissionLogProb then returns a uniform log(0.25) for the rest of the night.
The rmssd field holds a raw RR interval in ms, not an RMSSD. computeBaseline averages it. The emission model then compares rr / mean(rr) to thresholds designed for an HRV ratio.
Each epoch is one second. At line 2424 take(240) (named first120m) therefore covers 4 minutes of sleep onset, not 120 minutes. The transition matrix (self-stay 0.80–0.90) implies a coarser epoch, roughly 30 s. At 1 Hz the decode can change state every few seconds. That creates many hypnogram segments and inflates awakening counts.
Aggregate to 30 s epochs. Compute RMSSD per epoch from the RR beats whose sleepRrTsMs fall in that epoch. Then take(240) is 120 minutes. Expand the decoded labels back to 1 s before the length check.

Update sleepJson stage totals when you replace hypnoStages.
withHypnoStages swaps only the per-second labels. The sleepJson fields (light_sec, deep_sec, rem_sec, wake_sec, nrem_sec, tst_sec, waso_sec) still come from the heuristic stager. The following read these values:
the hypnogram
the NREM mask for nocturnal RMSSD
_sleepRuns
the Stages table and _stageTotals
The screen can therefore draw HMM stages next to heuristic stage minutes for the same night. Recompute the stage-second fields from hmmStages and put them in the copied sleepJson. Alternatively, skip replacement when the totals cannot be kept consistent.

Require enough valid HR values before selecting the primary baseline.
percentileHr returns a percentile from a single valid HR value. If the other baseline rows have invalid HR, the live caller selects that one value instead of trying the stored-nightly fallback. An isolated low reading can therefore lower the arousal threshold and permit an early buzz. Apply a minimum valid-HR count before accepting this primary baseline.

Allow the stored-nightly fallback to work without recent baseline rows.
When the three-hour query returns fewer than 30 rows, lib/state/app_state.dart can select a valid stored hr_min_night and pass it as baselineHrOverride. This guard still returns false, so the secondary baseline cannot enable Smart Wake in the sparse-data case it is meant to cover. Keep the no-guess rule for the movement baseline, but provide a defined movement threshold when the stored HR fallback is used. Do not remove this guard alone: Line 394 also takes the median of baseline.

Make late-window protection capable of vetoing a positive detection.
The live caller passes the same value for baselineHr and baselineHrOverride. Protection requires recentHr <= baselineHr + 2, while Line 388 requires recentHr >= baselineHr + 4 to detect light sleep. Review comment at @lib/ui2/screens/sleep_detail.dart around lines 670 - 679:
Update the disclaimer Container styling to use the screen’s established
design-system tokens for spacing, background, and readable text contrast;
replace the deprecated withOpacity call with the supported withValues API where
opacity is needed.

Same fixes as on feat/smart-alarm-light-sleep (PR OpenStrap#630), minus the
smart-wake-only parts.

Nothing ever writes day_result.hr_min_night/rmssd_mean_night (OpenStrap#628
dropped the columns), so the secondary baseline read always yielded
null. Baseline chain is now: 10th percentile of the live 3h window
(primary, fed by the preSyncAt 61s band-prompt backfill) -> 90-min
median (shipped v1). Removes _ensureSleepBaselineColumns from all four
db migration paths; schema stays 58.
Also documents the sync data path on _checkSmartWake: band prompt
every 61s -> HIGH_FREQ_SYNC_PROMPT event -> one-shot historical
offload (90s floor in BackfillPolicy).

Status update: what has been reworked so far, what is still missing, where we need support
Applies to PR #630 (Smart Wake v2, HEAD 2836c8c3) and the coupled PR #628 (HMM sleep staging, HEAD 37900d87). Both branches are rebased onto current main (9873cfc) and MERGEABLE.
1. What has already been implemented
Core features (from the original commits)
Smart Wake v2 (lib/state/smart_wake.dart, app_state.dart): journal-aware, conservative light-sleep detection with a 10th-percentile nightly baseline, confounder profile (alcohol/caffeine/stress/workout/late meal/sick), ENMO trend check, late-window protection. Pure functions, 43 unit tests.
Pre-sync backfill (lib/sync/high_freq_wake_window.dart): band prompt lease extended 45 min before the wake window (135 min total, 61 s interval) so decoded_onehz is filled with the last ~3 h of nocturnal data. 15 new tests.
Review findings that were fixed (human + CodeRabbit)
Compile error: duplicate useHmmStages named arg in DayBundleInput.fromJson removed; lease statically qualified; double-quoted import → single quotes.
Dead parameter windowMinutes in enmoTrendExceeded is now actually applied (asymmetric regression test).
Persisted fired latch (smart_wake_fired_epoch in SharedPreferences): an iOS process relaunch mid-window cannot buzz again.
HMM is no longer dead code: useHmmStages (default false) → DerivationEngine → pref sleep_hmm_stages → Settings toggle "Experimental sleep staging (HMM)". The derivation fingerprint includes hmm= so a toggle re-derives affected days.
HMM input corrected: per-second windowed RMSSD from cleaned NN intervals (not raw RR), baseline selected by elapsed 120 min (not first 240 rows), nights with <30 usable observations are not decoded as "wake".
withHypnoStages keeps lnRmssdDates and recomputes the sleepJson stage totals.
Disclaimer permanently visible on all branches of the sleep detail screen, theme tokens instead of deprecated withOpacity, translations in all 7 ARBs (de/es/fr/hi/ru/zh/en).
resetAllData resets the in-memory HMM flag.
Smart-wake hardening: percentileHr requires ≥30 valid HR values; late-window protection compares against the nightly baseline; the headless band-prompt path passes effectiveLease.
Option A implemented: dead hr_min_night fallback removed (nothing writes that column; Feat/sleep stage plausibility #628 dropped it). Baseline chain: live 3 h 10th percentile → 90-min median. _ensureSleepBaselineColumns removed from db.dart, schema stays 58.
Verified: nightly sync is active
Data path documented and checked: band prompts every 61 s from preSyncAt → HIGH_FREQ_SYNC_PROMPT event → one-shot historical offload (90 s floor in BackfillPolicy, coalesced with the 15-min periodic) → decoded_onehz → 3 h baseline query.
2. What was taken into account (design decisions)
Safety first: Smart Wake can only ever trigger an earlier extra buzz (RUN_ALARM, haptics-only); the band's own SET_ALARM fires at window end independently on the band's clock. Anchored in code and docs.
Never guess: thin data → false (no early buzz); the fallback alarm fires anyway.
Ethics: journal confounders are never surfaced in the UI or logs by name (guardrail from rough_night.dart).
Experimental default-off: HMM only runs behind an explicit settings toggle.
No schema bump: schemaVersion stays 58; additive changes only where something is actually read/written.
All thresholds honestly labeled as "engineering choice" with literature direction (F2/F3/F5/F6/F8/F9, DOIs in the PR comments).
3. What is still missing / open
Feat/sleep stage plausibility #628: CHANGES_REQUESTED from @abdulsaheel is still formally in place (Oct 30). The three points (default-off setting ✅, persistent translated disclaimer ✅, HMM wired in ✅) are addressed, but the review was not withdrawn. → Maintainer: please re-review / make a new decision.
Accuracy comparison HMM vs. current heuristic (abdulsaheel's point 2): evidence that the HMM stages nights more accurately before it can become default-on. This is not a code problem — it needs an evaluation against reference data (e.g. PSG comparison or band-vs-old on a test corpus). → We need support here: does anyone have access to labeled reference nights (PSG or vendor staging) to compute a κ comparison?
CI on the new heads is still running (action_required on both runs from Nov 2, 10:03 UTC). Flutter is not available in this environment — flutter analyze / flutter test should be green locally or in CI before merge.
Minor test gap: _rmssdPerSecond and _classifySleepStagesHMM (null when <30 usable observations) have no direct unit tests, only indirect coverage.
Deliberately deferred follow-up topics (not in this PR; mikenrafter's reference diff 49049598...wake/630-notes): persisted buzz latch as a repeating alarm ("repeats until I'm up"), BandBuzzer interface, "Natural wake" UI with Natural/Gradual toggles, Home acknowledgement card, schema rung 61 for wake storage.

feat/sleep-stage-plausibility)This branch builds on #628's head (
c0be18aa). It uses #628'shr_min_nightcolumn (schema 60) as a secondary fallback for the nightly HR baseline. Merge #628 first, or rebase this branch onto main after #628 merges.Summary
Upgrades the existing smart-wake heuristic (
lib/state/smart_wake.dart) from a single-window HR-arousal proxy to a scientifically grounded, journal-aware, multi-signal light-sleep detector — in-place (same tick, same RUN_ALARM path, same fallback guarantee). No new alarm mode, no schema change, no UI change.Gate-approved methodology (8/8 questions approved by repo owner, 2026-10-25). Full fact base available on request.
