feat(triathlon): model and storage foundation - #648
Status: experimental draft — not mergeable, not verified by a Dart/Flutter run. CodeRabbit's full review of eaf55874 raised seven findings; all seven are addressed in 8da24a98. flutter analyze and flutter test still have not run, so passing CI is unproven.
Verification actually performed on 8da24a98: structure/API-reference check over all touched files, every new SQL statement executed against the real table DDL in SQLite (closed, open and cross-midnight segments), and a Python mirror of the boundary/timeline rules over the test scenarios. This is not a substitute for the Dart analyzer or the test suite.
Scope is deliberately the CORE workout record, not feedback:
Haptics, vibration patterns and the Haptic Lab are deferred; no part of this PR claims the strap can signal a transition.
The offline reconciler is implemented and tested but still has no production caller; wiring it into the sync path is the next step.
Live taps with the phone present are not wired either; the storage API they will use is here and validated.
Hardware retention of taps through a multi-hour race is unmeasured.
DNF is now modelled as abandoned (finalizable with one open cut segment, null duration); a never-started session must be discarded.
Schema rung 60 must be reconciled with the concurrent migration PR.
Model notes: gaps between segments are PAUSES (totalSec vs movingSec/pauseSec are reported separately); overlaps and backwards time are still rejected. Addressed from CodeRabbit's review: day delete/export use segment overlap (open and cross-midnight segments included) and read ids before deleting; restore protects every locally present race including discarded ones; create accepts an armed plan only and refuses pre-filled history; adjustBoundary marks a human correction manual on both rows; the offline final branch rejects trailing boundaries and impossible times; linkWorkout refuses missing rows and transitions; the reconciler ignores sessions that are neither armed nor active. Tests were added for each.
Why
A multisport session needs durable, ordered segment boundaries and a frozen plan. This is the first, storage-only part of a proposed triathlon series; it is not a usable triathlon mode yet.
Scope
Adds an ordered plan for Sprint, Olympic, Half Distance, Full Distance, custom and training sessions, including indoor/outdoor selection per discipline.
Adds triathlon session and segment storage, a schema migration and a persistence seam. Planned distance is distinct from recorded distance.
Adds preliminary model and storage tests. No workout screen, gesture handling, haptics, GPS wiring or health export is implemented in this PR.
No user-visible before/after change is intended in this storage-only step.
Draft — not ready for merge
Neither flutter analyze nor flutter test --concurrency=1 has been run. Flutter is unavailable in the development environment; the locally available Dart SDK crashes when starting the formatter. The existing fresh-install test is not an upgrade test. CI may find compile or test failures.
The following still need design, implementation and regression coverage before this can be merged:
Atomic transitions and correction of a boundary shared by adjacent segments, and validation of all recovery and finalized-session invariants.
Backup/restore conflict handling that protects finalized records and their children, plus end-to-end full and day-scoped backup/restore tests.
Actual v58/v59 migration and day-deletion tests, including cross-midnight and unfinished sessions; schema rung 60 must be reconciled with concurrent migrations before merge.
Strict parsing and validation of unknown/newer plan formats, segmentation source provenance and immutable snapshot semantics.
Real race recovery, integration with workout sessions, handling of offline events and hardware testing of feedback are future PRs, not promises made by this one.
kAlgoVersion remains unchanged: this change does not alter existing derived analytics output. No hardware verification was performed. All planned distances are targets, not sensor measurements.
Summary by Sourcery
Establish the storage and data-model foundation for experimental triathlon and multisport workout records.
New Features:
Add frozen multisport plans supporting standard race presets, custom training sequences, per-discipline indoor/outdoor choices, planned distances, and goals.
Add triathlon session and segment persistence with lifecycle management, boundary correction, measured-distance provenance, workout linking, pause reporting, DNF handling, and finalization immutability.
Add offline reconstruction of segment boundaries from stored band tap events.
Bug Fixes:
Include triathlon records correctly in day-scoped export and deletion, including open and cross-midnight segments and linked workout cleanup.
Protect local triathlon records, including discarded sessions and their segments, during backup restore.
Enhancements:
Integrate triathlon tables into schema creation, migration, recent-data slicing, backup/restore, and salvage flows.
Enforce ordered, non-overlapping segment timelines while distinguishing moving time from pauses.
Tests:
Add model, persistence, migration, backup/restore, deletion, timeline, finalization, DNF, boundary correction, linking, and reconciliation coverage against SQLite.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for creating and managing triathlon race and training plans, including discipline environments, planned distances, and goal times.
Triathlon sessions can track segments, transitions, pauses, timing, and linked workouts, with controls to adjust or merge segment boundaries.
Race boundaries can be detected from recorded tap events and applied automatically when eligible.
Data & Reliability
Triathlon records are retained in recent database snapshots and included in day exports, restores, and database recovery.

`triathlon_segment` check so a parent-only partial import does not cause its

atomically, or persist and consult an incomplete-import marker so retries resume
its segments; preserve the existing protection for fully restored local races.
- Line 12545: Remove the extra closing brace in the enclosing row-processing
block so the remaining code stays within the row loop and the surrounding blocks
are balanced. Preserve the existing loop body and control flow.
- Around line 12537-12539: Update the triathlon_session guard using
protectedTriathlons so a newer imported backup can advance an earlier restored
race: compare available version or edit-time metadata and allow the import when
it is newer, while continuing to preserve explicit local decisions. Establish
which metadata reliably represents recency before changing the guard.
- Around line 11173-11174: Update the day-selection predicate for segments with
NULL end_ts so finalized abandoned races are bounded to their relevant day and
do not match every later day; do not invent a measured end time. Preserve normal
interval selection for segments with a recorded end, and align the
abandoned-segment rule with the state allowed by TriathlonDb.finalize.
- Around line 11186-11187: Update the race-deletion flow around the
triathlon_segment txn.rawDelete call to collect linked workout_id values before
deleting segments, then apply the established TriathlonDb.delete cascade to
those workouts in the same transaction. Preserve the existing cascade behavior
so each workout’s session row and associated data are removed.

Review comments at @lib/data/triathlon_store.dart:
- Around line 912-913: Handle the nullable result of TriSegment.fromRow before

- Around line 784-798: Update removeBoundary to reject removal when either
adjacent segment, left or right, has a non-null workoutId; perform this check
before updating either row and use the existing TriathlonWriteError mechanism.
Preserve the current merge behavior for unlinked segments.
- Around line 339-341: Move the write-error documentation currently attached
above ReconcileBoundary to the TriathlonWriteError declaration, and remove the
contradictory paragraph near _checkNeighbour that says unequal boundaries are
invalid. Keep the documentation that describes gaps as legal pauses.
Review comments at @lib/state/triathlon_reconciler.dart:
- Around line 103-106: Ensure double-tap boundary events for armed or active
triathlon sessions remain available until reconciliation completes: update

ability to recover both boundaries intact.
- Line 169: Update the floor calculation in the triathlon reconciliation flow so
it compares tap timestamps and the arming time in the same strap-clock domain.
Convert sessionCreatedAtSec using an established clock offset, or establish a
measured offset before applying the floor; do not reject a valid start tap
merely because the strap clock lags the phone clock.

OpenStrap/edge#644: Changes the recent-slice copy path used to include the triathlon tables added here.
OpenStrap/edge#628: Also advances the database schema to version 60 and adds upgrade-path changes, so the schema rung requires reconciliation.
Suggested reviewers:abdulsaheel
Merge Risk: Critical · previous review 7c8f2
The build is currently broken: db.dart and triathlon_store.dart contain compile errors. Day deletion and export can also include an abandoned race on unrelated later days, and deleting a race can leave linked workouts behind. Restoring backups can leave a race incomplete, and offline boundary reconciliation can lose taps or misplace the race start. Fix at least the compile errors before merging.

Select triathlon segments by interval overlap.
The ordinary sessions table uses start-only ownership, but this triathlon path explicitly assigns a cross-midnight race to both days. A race with only a segment that starts before midnight and ends after it is not selected for the second day. deleteDays can leave its rows behind, and exportDaysDb can omit the race.
The existing midnight test starts another segment after midnight, so the UNION matches that later segment. It does not cover a single segment that spans midnight without a later segment start.

- 'UNION SELECT session_id FROM triathlon_segment '- 'WHERE start_ts >= ? AND start_ts < ?)';+ 'UNION SELECT session_id FROM triathlon_segment '+ 'WHERE start_ts < ? AND (end_ts IS NULL OR end_ts > ?))';- whereArgs: [startSec, endSec, startSec, endSec],+ whereArgs: [startSec, endSec, endSec, startSec],
Apply the same selector and argument order in deleteDays. Add a regression case with one segment starting before midnight and ending after it, including an open segment with end_ts IS NULL.

Preserve locally discarded races during restore.
If a backup captured a race before the athlete discarded it, restoring that backup replaces the local discarded row and its segments. The protection query excludes discarded, while the restore uses REPLACE for unprotected rows. The old race can then qualify for TriathlonDb.activeSession again. Include discarded in the local decision states that a restore cannot overwrite. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

create stores caller-supplied segment timestamps without the whole-timeline check.
create accepts session.segments that already have startTs/endTs values. It checks each row with _checkSegmentShape and checks adjacent rows with _checkNeighbour. It never calls _validateTimeline. A caller can therefore store segment 3 as started while segment 0 has no start. A caller can also store two open segments. The _validateTimeline docstring states that this state cannot be repaired by any later operation, and every later write runs _validateTimeline and fails on it.
create also writes session.startTs/session.endTs and session.status exactly as supplied. This path skips the rule that bounds come from _recomputeSessionBounds. The docstring says that create persists an ARMED session. The simplest fix is to reject supplied timestamps and a status other than armed. If pre-timed segments are a required feature, validate the inserted rows and derive the bounds inside the transaction.

adjustBoundary keeps the old boundarySource after it moves a boundary.
kTriBoundarySources defines manual as "a boundary the user moved afterwards". The file says that a non-measured boundary must never be presented as a measurement. adjustBoundary calls copyWith(endTs:) and copyWith(startTs:) without boundarySource. A boundary that the user moved therefore still reads as gesture or phone.

The last-segment branch of applyOfflineBoundariesInTx skips validation and ignores extra boundaries.
This branch writes endTs: b.atSec directly. It does not check b.atSec >= current.startTs, and it does not call _validateTimeline. Every other write path in this class runs both checks. _transitionInTx performs the equivalent check at Line 933. If a stale or bad boundary arrives, the stored last segment can end before it starts. The session is then marked finished.
The return also drops any boundaries after index i without an error. This conflicts with the docstring at Lines 648-649, which says the method rejects a boundary that would not advance.

linkWorkout reports success when no segment row was updated.
txn.update returns the number of changed rows, and the code ignores that count. If idx does not exist, the call updates nothing and still returns normally. The method also accepts a transition (T1/T2), but the file header says a transition has no sessions row. The TriathlonWriteError doc says a silent no-op is not acceptable here.

reconcile can change a discarded session back to active or finished.
reconcile rejects only finalized sessions. applyOfflineBoundariesInTx calls _requireWritable, which also checks only finalized_at. Consider a discarded session with three or more taps after created_at. The start branch writes status: 'active' at Line 681 of triathlon_store.dart, and the final branch writes 'finished'. The header says the caller passes an armed or active session, but no code enforces that rule. Add a guard at this entry point, or in applyOfflineBoundariesInTx.

Branch: feat/triathlon-model-storage on BucciMobile/edge-copy.
flutter analyze and flutter test have NEVER been run in this environment (no working Flutter SDK; the local Dart VM crashes on startup). CI result is unknown. Do not claim tests pass.
No hardware verification of any kind has been done. Do not claim the strap retains taps for hours, or that haptics work.
kAlgoVersion is deliberately UNCHANGED (113): this PR adds session storage only, no derived analytics output changed.
lib/state/triathlon_reconciler.dart — offline reconstruction from band_events double-taps (event_id 14, columns event_id/ts/device_id): 3-tap gate in a 6 s window anchored on the first tap, per-segment minimum durations (kMinSegmentSec), clock-drift tolerance 120 s, whole chain applied in ONE transaction, idempotent, only for armed/active sessions.
lib/data/db.dart — tables registered in _salvageTables, _restoreTables, requiredTables, kSliceTables (recent_slice.dart), exportDaysDb and deleteDays. Day selection uses segment OVERLAP (start_ts < end AND (end_ts IS NULL OR end_ts > start)), ids are read before deleting. Restore protects every locally present race (INSERT OR REPLACE would otherwise resurrect discarded/older races).
test/triathlon_model_storage_test.dart — 30+ tests over sqflite_ffi. NOTE: CodeRabbit's .coderabbit.yaml excludes test/**, so test code was never bot-reviewed.
2. Model decisions already made (do not reopen without reason)
Timeline: started segments form a PREFIX, boundaries MONOTONIC, overlaps and backwards time rejected. A gap between segments is a PAUSE (legal, can be hours). TriSession.totalSec (wall clock incl. pauses) vs movingSec (sum of closed segments) vs pauseSec are reported separately.
DNF: status abandoned. finalize accepts it iff >=1 segment started, at most one segment open (the cut discipline, durationSec == null), earlier closed, later untouched. Never-started => discarded.
Lifecycle: armed -> active -> finished|abandoned -> finalized; discarded is terminal. updateSession may only write note and statuses armed/active/discarded/abandoned; bounds are ALWAYS derived from segments (_recomputeSessionBounds). finalize is one-way and blocks even note afterwards.
Provenance: boundary_source in gesture|phone|manual|posthoc|unknown. adjustBoundary marks both sides manual. Planned fields are immutable after create; measured distance_m always requires distance_source.
Indoor/outdoor is per segment and frozen into the plan at arm time; GPS is armed only if some segment records a route (triathlonSegmentRecordsRoute).
3. What is NOT done — the actual work list, in order
Wire the reconciler into sync.TriathlonReconciler has NO caller. After every foreground sync AND headless background drain, call reconcile(activeSessionId) for the current armed/active session. Find the drain completion point in lib/ble/ble_engine.dart / lib/sync/ and hook it there. Add a test that a sync ingesting new band_events rows updates the open session.
Live tap path. The gesture dispatcher still only fires its configured action; nothing feeds TapAdvanceGate/startSegment/transitionSegment/finishSegment live. The dispatcher's 2 s debounce and 6 s recency guard are deliberate — do NOT relax them globally (an earlier attempt to bypass recency for all actions was reverted; stale taps must never trigger media/water/workout). Add a separate, triathlon-only tap pipeline in front of/alongside GestureDispatcher.
Crash recovery / resume. Persist on every transition (already transactional) and on relaunch resume via activeSession. Add a test: kill mid-race (simulate by closing/reopening LocalDb), session resumes at the correct open segment.
Segment -> sessions wiring.linkWorkout exists but nothing closes/opens a child workout at each transition (note: WorkoutController.startWorkout refuses while activeWorkout != null). Decide: one child sessions row per discipline segment, closed at the transition.
Haptics are explicitly DEFERRED by the user. Do not spend effort on vibration patterns.
Real migration + roundtrip tests: v58->v60 upgrade exists; add v59->v60, a FULL backup/restore roundtrip (not only day-scoped), and repeated-sync idempotence.
Run flutter analyze and flutter test --concurrency=1 in a real Flutter environment (CI or Codespace). This is the gate for leaving draft.
…n (v60)
Build the storage foundation for triathlon workout mode:
- TriathlonPlan pure model (race presets Sprint / Olympic / Half Distance /
Full Distance + custom + training mode) with per-segment indoor/outdoor
environment selection.
- TriathlonDb storage seam on schema v60 (triathlon_session parent +
triathlon_segment child rows) enforcing two invariants:
1. Finalized means immutable — a finalized session or segment cannot
be edited.
2. Segments cannot overlap or leave gaps — neighbour boundaries meet
at one instant so split sum equals total duration.
- Registered in restore, salvage, slice and delete-cascade lists.
- kAlgoVersion UNCHANGED — pure session storage with no changed derived
daily analytics outputs.
- Restore the breathing controller import and drop the dispatcher override
that would have replayed old taps into existing actions.
- Replace the broken saveSegment body with a transactional version that
keeps planned fields immutable and checks neighbours from the database.
- Add startSegment, finishSegment, validated transitionSegment and
adjustBoundary; session bounds now derive from the segments.
- Rewrite the offline reconciler against the real band_events schema:
gate on taps within the window and per-segment minimum durations,
ignore already-consumed taps, and apply the chain in one transaction.
- Fix day deletion (triathlon rows are not session children) and the
duplicated restore entries; protect finalized races on restore.
- Extend tests: offline segmentation, floors, transitions, planning
immutability, workout-link uniqueness and day deletion.
Unverified: flutter analyze/test have not run here, and the reconciler is
still not wired into the sync flow.
…ht paths
Storage:
- One timeline rule for the whole session (started segments form a prefix,
one open segment, contiguous monotonic boundaries), enforced inside every
mutator so a failed check rolls the transaction back.
- Offline start now marks the session active.
- finishSegment only closes the FINAL segment: closing an earlier one left a
session finalize could never accept.
- finalize requires status finished and a valid timeline.
- updateSession no longer writes derived bounds or lifecycle-only statuses.
- copyWith can clear a start; duplicate ids raise TriathlonWriteError.
- linkWorkout refuses the same workout on any two segments.
Reconciler:
- Strict 6 s burst window anchored on the first tap (a chained 0/6/12 s run no
longer counts as one burst), clock-drift tolerance on the event read.
Day paths:
- deleteDays selects a race by parent start OR any segment start and deletes
the ids it read (the second statement used to invalidate its own subquery,
so a cross-midnight race survived deletion).
- exportDaysDb uses the same rule; restore protects locally running and
finalized races.
Tests:
- lifecycle walk, early-finish refusal, out-of-order timeline, updateSession
bounds, v58 -> v60 upgrade, fresh install, cross-midnight deletion and a
day export/import round trip.
Verification here was static only: bracket/syntax structure, API references,
the SQL statements against the real DDL, and a Python mirror of the boundary
and timeline rules. flutter analyze/test have NOT run.
- Day delete/export select a race by START or by segment OVERLAP, so an open
or cross-midnight segment is included (arguments reordered accordingly).
- Restore protects every locally present race, including discarded ones.
- create accepts an armed plan only and refuses pre-filled session bounds or
segment history.
- adjustBoundary marks both moved boundaries 'manual': a human correction is
not a gesture measurement.
- The offline final branch rejects trailing boundaries and an end before the
start, and validates the timeline before finishing.
- linkWorkout refuses a missing segment, a transition and an empty id, and
verifies one row changed.
- The reconciler ignores sessions that are neither armed nor active.
Tests: create invariants, manual provenance, link guards, discarded sessions,
open cross-midnight segment deletion, export overlap and a trailing offline
boundary chain. Verification remains static: structure/API, SQL against the
real DDL, Python mirror of the pure rules. flutter analyze/test have not run.
- The timeline rule is now monotonic-with-optional-gaps instead of strictly
contiguous: a workout can be interrupted for hours between disciplines,
and a missed transition tap looks exactly like a pause. Overlaps and
backwards time are still rejected; started segments still form a prefix.
- TriSession reports totalSec, movingSec and pauseSec separately, so a pause
is never billed as training time and an unmeasured segment stays null.
- New status 'abandoned' models DNF: finalize accepts it when at least one
segment started, exactly one segment may be open (the discipline the
athlete stopped in) with a null duration, earlier segments closed and
later ones untouched. A never-started session must be discarded instead.
Tests: pause legality and pauseSec, overlap refusal, DNF finalize with an
open cut segment, refusal to finalize a never-started session.
Verification remains static (structure/API, SQL vs real DDL, Python mirror of
the rules). flutter analyze/test have not run.
A false triple-tap in the start pen started the race at the wrong time
with no way to heal it (a session may only start once), and a false
triple-tap mid-race split one discipline in two, while adjustBoundary
can only move a boundary, never remove one.
- adjustStart moves the race start, legal only while no segment has
ended and no segment is linked to a workout; stamps 'manual'.
- removeBoundary merges segment idx+1 into idx (successor must be the
newest started segment), keeps earlier start / later end, stamps
'manual' on the survivor.
- Tests: false start correction + refusal after a closed split, merge
of a live-edge boundary + refusal once a later segment started.
Verification: static only (no Flutter SDK here); flutter test still
pending in CI.

Bound abandoned segments when selecting days.
A finalized abandoned race can retain a segment with end_ts == null. This predicate then matches every later day. Deleting an unrelated later day deletes the whole race; exporting that day also includes it. Use a bounded day-selection rule for abandoned races without inventing a measured end time. TriathlonDb.finalize permits this state in lib/data/triathlon_store.dart, Lines 966–990. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

removeBoundary leaves orphaned or stale workout links.
adjustStart rejects the edit when any segment has a workoutId. removeBoundary has no such check.
If segment idx + 1 is linked, Line 795 clears its timestamps but keeps workout_id. The row then points to a workout while it has no start or end. linkWorkout can later replace that link without any error.
If segment idx is linked, the merged segment gets a new end time. The linked sessions row no longer matches it.

Update removeBoundary to reject removal when either adjacent segment, left or
right, has a non-null workoutId; perform this check before updating either row
and use the existing TriathlonWriteError mechanism. Preserve the current merge
behavior for unlinked segments.

Compile error: seg is nullable and the code reads seg.isTransition without a null check.
TriSegment.fromRow returns TriSegment?. It returns null when kind is not a known key (Lines 196-197). Dart null safety rejects seg.isTransition on a nullable receiver. flutter analyze and the build fail on this line.
Handle the null case explicitly. A row with an unknown kind is not linkable.

Handle the nullable result of TriSegment.fromRow before accessing isTransition
in the segment-linking flow. Treat a null result as an unknown, non-linkable
segment and stop the operation; preserve the existing transition handling for
non-null segments.

Retain double-tap events until reconciliation completes.
If an armed or active session remains unreconciled past the retention cutoff, LocalDb.pruneDecodedBeforeRecTs deletes event 14 from band_events. This query then cannot recover those boundaries, even though the session still exists. Preserve tap events needed by open triathlon sessions, or reconcile them before the prune transaction deletes them. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Ensure double-tap boundary events for armed or active triathlon sessions remain
available until reconciliation completes: update LocalDb.pruneDecodedBeforeRecTs
to preserve required band_events rows or reconcile those sessions before
deleting them. Keep the band_events query’s ability to recover both boundaries
intact.

Compare the race floor and taps in one clock domain.
If the strap clock is 60 seconds behind the phone, a start tapped 40 seconds after arming has a strap timestamp 20 seconds before sessionCreatedAtSec. The widened query retrieves that tap, but at <= floor rejects its cluster. A later transition can then be recorded as the race start. Convert the arming time to strap time, or establish a measured clock offset before applying the floor. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the floor calculation in the triathlon reconciliation flow so it compares
tap timestamps and the arming time in the same strap-clock domain. Convert
sessionCreatedAtSec using an established clock offset, or establish a measured
offset before applying the floor; do not reject a valid start tap merely because
the strap clock lags the phone clock.

- db.dart: remove extra closing brace (compile error from rebase)
- db.dart: day delete/export bound open segments of FINALIZED races by
COALESCE(session.end_ts, session.start_ts); live sessions keep the
open-overlap rule (verified against SQLite for closed/open/cross-midnight)
- db.dart: day delete now cascades linked workouts (route, splits,
session_sensor, strength_set, sessions row) in the same transaction
- db.dart: restore guard compares updated_at so a newer backup can
advance a race; discarded stays protected; _triProtected helper
- store: linkWorkout null-checks TriSegment.fromRow (compile error)
- store: removeBoundary rejects segments with a linked workout
- plan: fromJson parses wrong-typed JSON fields without throwing;
TriSession.fromRow catches all parse errors as 'unknown plan'
- store: doc comments moved/corrected (TriathlonWriteError, _checkNeighbour)
Not addressed here (heavy lifts, reported in PR): band_events retention
for unreconciled sessions, reconciler clock-domain floor.
Verification: static + SQL against real DDL in SQLite; flutter
analyze/test still pending (no SDK here).

Why
A multisport session needs durable, ordered segment boundaries and a frozen plan. This is the first, storage-only part of a proposed triathlon series; it is not a usable triathlon mode yet.
