Add an autocomplete setting to phone fields with On, Off, and Tel options. Unformatted phone fields default to Tel, while custom and international formats avoid inheriting that default. Changing the phone format in the builder updates the default accordingly.

Testing

  • PHP syntax, PHPCS, PHPCBF, PHP CS Fixer, Mago, and PHPStan passed for the changed PHP file.
  • ESLint and Oxlint passed for the changed JavaScript file.
  • Psalm could not run because the local xcrun developer tools path is invalid. Rector could not run because this checkout has no Rector configuration.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Phone fields offer browser autocomplete options for on, off, and telephone number.
    • Newly created phone fields default to telephone autocomplete when no format is selected. Existing fields retain their current default behavior, and saved empty autocomplete values remain empty.
    • Changing the format can set telephone autocomplete when no format is selected, or clear it when choosing a custom or international format.

Walkthrough

The phone field now supports autocomplete options and defaults to tel for new fields when no format or saved autocomplete value overrides that default. The admin interface updates autocomplete when the phone format changes. Tests cover these defaults and saved values.

Changes: Phone autocomplete

Layer / File(s) Summary
Phone autocomplete defaults and format updates
classes/models/fields/FrmFieldPhone.php, js/src/admin/admin.js, tests/phpunit/fields/test_FrmFieldType.php
FrmFieldPhone enables autocomplete and allows on, off, and tel. New fields default to tel when no format or saved value overrides it; existing fields receive no added option. In the admin interface, selecting none sets an empty autocomplete value to tel; selecting custom or international clears it when it is tel. Tests cover defaults, saved empty values, missing options, and the default-options filter.

Check the inherited format for new fields.

When frm_default_field_options sets a custom format for a new phone field, $this->field is 0. This check ignores the inherited format and assigns tel to the formatted field. Check $options['format'] when no field exists. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Request changes: the builder JS change is not in the committed bundle, so it does not run on a real install.

Blocking

  • js/formidable_admin.js was not rebuilt (inline comment on admin.js). Switching the phone Format dropdown does nothing to the Autocomplete value until it is.

Non-blocking

  • FrmFieldPhone::get_default_field_options() applies to every existing phone field, not just new ones. Existing phone fields with no format and no saved autocomplete value now render autocomplete="tel" on the front end (see inline comment). FrmFieldEmail seeds its email value through get_new_field_defaults() instead, so only new fields change. If changing existing forms is intended, fine; if not, use the same pattern.
  • No PHPUnit coverage for the new default (no format -> tel, format set -> empty, saved empty value stays empty).

What I checked

  • Loaded the PR in a Playground preview env (Lite at 4ea22c8, Pro 7.0 from the previous day) and built a form with three phone fields: legacy (no saved autocomplete, no format), custom format, and saved-empty autocomplete.
  • Front end, base vs PR: legacy field gained autocomplete="tel" (base had none); custom-format and saved-empty fields emit none, as intended.
  • Builder, as DOM/attribute checks (not a visual review): on the committed bundle, Format -> Custom leaves Autocomplete at tel. After npm run build on the PR head, the same switch clears it and switching back to None restores tel, so the source logic itself is correct.
  • CI: Psalm fails on FrmAbilities*Controller files this PR does not touch; the PR's own files are not in the output.

Not exercised: how the Autocomplete setting looks in the builder (no screenshot taken), the International format (Pro-only), and a Lite-only install. The Pro in the env is one day older than Lite, so the setting's dropdown contents were not checked against current Pro.

Blocking: js/formidable_admin.js (the committed webpack bundle that FrmAppController registers unconditionally) was not rebuilt, so this block never reaches a real site.

Checked live on the PR branch: with the committed bundle, changing Format to Custom leaves Autocomplete at tel. Running npm run build on this head puts field_options_autocomplete_ into js/formidable_admin.js (it has zero matches in the committed file), and with that bundle Custom clears it and None restores tel.

Fix: run npm run build and commit the regenerated js/formidable_admin.js in this PR. Only commit the bundle change that comes from this edit; the build also touched the other js/*.js bundles on my machine, which belong to other work.

Non-blocking: get_default_field_options() is also used to fill in options for fields that already exist, so this changes forms that were saved before this PR.

Checked live: a phone field saved with no format and no autocomplete key renders autocomplete="tel" on the front end on this branch; on the base commit it has none. A field saved with an explicit empty value, or with a custom format, still renders none.

FrmFieldEmail avoids this by setting its value in get_new_field_defaults(), so only new fields get it. If existing phone fields should stay untouched, set the default there instead:

public function get_new_field_defaults() {
	$field                                  = parent::get_new_field_defaults();
	$field['field_options']['autocomplete'] = 'tel';
	return $field;
}

and drop get_default_field_options() (the JS already handles the format switch). If the change to existing forms is intended, a PHPUnit test for the three cases (no format -> tel, format set -> empty, saved empty stays empty) would pin it down.

Approve at 37f4810: the blocking finding is fixed.

  • js/formidable_admin.js is rebuilt. The committed bundle now contains the autocomplete_<id> / custom/international format logic from admin.js, so the Format dropdown now drives the Autocomplete value on a real install.
  • A saved empty autocomplete value now stays empty. get_default_field_options() checks for a saved autocomplete key in field_options (array or object) before defaulting to tel.
  • Three PHPUnit cases were added for the no-format default, the format-set default, and the saved-empty value.

Non-blocking

  • A phone field whose saved field_options has no autocomplete key at all still renders autocomplete="tel" on the front end. Fields saved while the parent default 'autocomplete' => '' was in place carry the key and stay empty. Whether older fields lack it, I did not check.
  • frm_default_field_options runs after the tel default is applied in get_default_field_options(), so a filter can still override it (CodeRabbit's point). Moving the default into extra_field_opts() would let the filter see it first. This is low risk, so I'm leaving it to you.
  • The Psalm CI failure was in FrmAbilities*Controller files at the previous head. I did not re-check it at this head.

What I checked this round: diff from 4ea22c8 to 37f4810 read in full, php -l on FrmFieldPhone.php, the bundle contents against admin.js, and the three new tests read against the code path.

Not exercised: no browser or visual check this round (no screenshot), no live Playground re-run, no PHPUnit run (CI is opt-in and skipped), no International format (Pro-only), no Lite-only install.

Saved phone fields without an autocomplete key picked up tel on the
front end. Move the default into extra_field_opts() and apply it only
when no saved field is attached, so the frm_default_field_options
filter can also override it.

Handle the International option's empty value as a formatted type.

The International option sets formatElement.value to '', so hasFormat is false and the handler does not clear tel. The upgrade fallback changes the format to none without rerunning this handler. The autocomplete select therefore remains tel and can save the wrong value.

Approving. The two non-blocking notes from my last review are resolved by 5f7260555.

Checked live on the PR branch (WP Playground, Formidable Lite):

  • A new phone field from setup_new_vars('phone') carries autocomplete = tel. A new text field is unaffected (empty).
  • On the front end, a phone field saved with no autocomplete key renders no autocomplete attribute (the earlier note is fixed). A newly created phone field renders autocomplete="tel". A field saved with format=custom and an empty autocomplete renders none.
  • get_default_field_options() on the saved legacy field returns an empty autocomplete.
  • php -l is clean on both changed PHP files.

Carried over from my previous pass, not re-run: js/src/admin/admin.js and the rebuilt js/formidable_admin.js are unchanged since the commit I verified last time (the bundle still contains field_options_autocomplete_), so I did not re-click the format dropdown. The five new PHPUnit cases were read, not executed; the PHPUnit workflow shows skipping on this PR.

Red checks, not caused by this PR:

  • Psalm: MissingPureAnnotation hits across the repo (912 errors on another PR's head too), including pre-existing methods in FrmFieldPhone.php (field_settings_for_type, html5_input_type). CodeRabbit's "fix the Psalm failure" comment is therefore not actionable here.
  • DeepSource: reports assertSame() as an undefined method in the test file. That's a false positive, since FrmUnitTest extends the WP PHPUnit base class and the rest of the suite uses it.

Not exercised: International format, Pro-only phone behavior, visual layout of the new select. One edge case remains unaddressed, and I'm not asking for a change: if another plugin adds a default format through frm_default_field_options for a new phone field, that field still starts at tel until the format dropdown changes.
