perf: settle without repeated member lookups and repeated trade totals - #222
Main's 10-31 20:34 daily settlement held the server thread 1.81 s in one tick. After #218/#220 the disk syncs are 0.36 s; the rest is computation:
ProvinceManager.recalculate 730 ms;
RealmSettlementEffects.apply → Guild.updateWealth → FactionManager.updateAllPrestige 250 ms, of which ~150 ms re-looked-up every member's character, account split and playtime on every pass;
every income read in a full recalculation re-summed the province's total trade (~90 ms of the 120 ms getIncome).
Change
Prestige passes share their member lookups. The settlement still runs one prestige pass per guild (a realm's rank moves at most one level per pass, so one pass would change ranks), but the guild loop now runs inside one MemberShare/MemberPlaytime.withinPass, which nested passes already share. The loop changes no character, account or playtime, so every pass gets the answers it looked up before. The order of steps (factions → guilds → reparations → saves → journal) is unchanged.
Each province sums its total trade once per income pass.ProvinceManager.readIncomes holds Province.getTotalTrade() around the all-guild income reads of a full recalculation and of single-guild recalculations that save income, released in finally. Those reads only write guild trade breakdowns, which the total does not read. This speeds up every full recalculation, not just the settlement's.
Not changed: reusing an earlier recalculation for the settlement. The version counter does not cover laws, tariffs, relations, favour, ownership or installations, the day preparation removes provinces right before, and stability includes time-decaying espionage unrest, so a cached result could differ.
Expected saving about 210–230 ms of the 1.8 s settlement (estimated from the profile).
Testing
RealmSettlementPrestigePassTest: a 4-realm, 8-guild plan applied at once and one guild per plan (fresh lookups each time, as before) gives identical rank, prestige, prestige lines and wealth with ranks climbing several levels; playtime lookups drop 8×; a failure in the loop still clears the shared lookups.
ProvinceIncomeHoldTest: trade breakdowns after full and single-guild recalculations on a contested 4×4 map match the old read-by-read sums bit for bit, and the hold is released.
Locally the failing tests match main on this Windows PC (directory fsync and permissions); all new lines are covered.
Dev (TFMCDev01, 11-01 22:07): a forced settlement of day 41 completed: day 42, day preparation prepared + settled, settlement journal done, all 29 faction files written, no .tmp files, nothing logged.
The daily settlement held Main's server thread for 1.8 s on 10-31. Two
parts of it repeated work whose answer could not change.
Applying the settlement updates each guild's wealth, and each update runs
a prestige pass over every realm. The passes have to stay one per guild:
a realm's rank moves at most one level per pass and the rank thresholds
read the other realms, so one pass at the end gives other ranks. But every
pass looked every member's character, account split and playtime up
again, which was 150 of the 250 ms. Nothing in the settlement's guild loop
changes a character, an account or playtime, so the loop now runs inside
one set of those lookups, which each pass already shares with nested
passes. Every pass gets the answers it looked up before.
At the end of every full trade recalculation, and of a single-guild one
that stores income, each guild's income is read province by province, and
each read summed the province's total trade again over every guild trading
there. These reads write only the guilds' trade breakdowns, so a province's
total cannot change while they run. Each province now sums it once for
that pass and answers the same total to every read. This was most of the
120 ms income pass in the settlement's recalculation, and it also speeds up
every other full recalculation.
Money, prestige, ranks, upkeep, trade breakdowns, the settlement and day
journals, and crash recovery are unchanged. New tests compare a settlement
applied in one plan against the same plan applied one guild at a time
(fresh lookups per guild, as before), and compare stored trade breakdowns
after full and single-guild recalculations against reads that sum every
province's total on each ask.
The recalculation itself is not reused from an earlier one. Nothing marks
the province model dirty in production, the day's preparation removes
provinces and moves movement organization just before the recalculation,
and owner stability keeps decaying with time, so an earlier result cannot
be shown to match a fresh one.

Improved consistency of guild and realm prestige results when settlements are processed together.
Ensured province trade totals remain consistent throughout income recalculations, including when a read fails.
Restored normal trade-total updates after recalculations complete.
Tests
Added coverage for combined settlement processing, trade-total consistency, and recovery after failed reads.
Realm settlement now groups guild updates within shared prestige-pass scopes and runs other settlement effects afterwards. Province income recalculations hold cached trade totals during income reads and release them when reads finish. New tests cover settlement results, failure handling, income breakdowns, and cache behaviour.

Province can hold and cache its total trade. Full and single-guild recalculations hold totals during income reads and release them in a finally block. Tests check income breakdowns, held-total caching, NaN handling, and release.

Add a test for hold release after a failing income read.
The test everyProvinceIsReleasedAfterTheRecalculations checks the release only after successful recalculations. A change that moves the release out of the finally block in readIncomes would still pass. Add a case where an income read throws. Then check that getTotalTrade() reflects a changed trade entry.

Add a test that proves the manager holds each province's total during income reads.
Add a test that proves the manager holds each province's total during income reads.
The breakdown tests compare stored values with values recomputed after the hold is released, so both sides match with or without the hold. Removing the readIncomes hold at ProvinceManager.java:154-156 and 323-327 leaves every test passing. The class comment at ProvinceIncomeHoldTest.java:27-30 says each total is "summed once", but no test counts those sums. Add a spy or counter on Province total-trade reads for both recalculation paths.

Update ProvinceIncomeHoldTest to count Province total-trade reads during both
recalculation paths and assert each province’s total is read only once while
income is held. Use an existing spy or counter mechanism without changing
production behaviour, and ensure the assertions fail if the readIncomes hold is
removed.
Assert character lookups in the settlement pass test.
Assert character lookups in the settlement pass test.
The assertion at lines 202-203 checks only playtimeAsks. Removing MemberShare.withinPass leaves it green, because MemberPlaytime.withinPass caches the playtime probe. The infoCalls counter is incremented but never asserted. Add an infoAsks field to Outcome, populate it like playtimeAsks, and assert the reduction. MemberShareTest.aPassSplitsEachAccountOnce already guards the share cache at unit level.

Update Outcome and the settlement-pass test to capture the infoCalls count as
infoAsks, populate it alongside playtimeAsks, and assert the expected reduction
in character info lookups; retain the existing playtimeAsks assertion.
