This PR adds CI for TanStack/ai on TanStack Source. It adds 4 workflows in .source/workflows/. They port the PR tests, the E2E shards, the Bun tests and the daily model sync from GitHub Actions.

GitHub Actions do not change. GitHub Actions do not read .source/, so every GitHub workflow runs as before. The required GitHub checks (Test, E2E Tests and the others) stay required.

🎯 Changes

  • pr.ts: the test job runs pnpm run test:pr on each pull request, as the GitHub Test job does.
  • e2e.ts: the 4 E2E shards run on pull requests, and on pushes to main, alpha, beta and rc. The e2e-result job gives one result for all shards, as the GitHub E2E Tests job does. Each shard uploads its videos, its Playwright report and its traces, also when it fails.
  • bun-test.ts: runs the Bun test suite of @tanstack/ai-isolate-quickjs-bun when that package or ai-code-mode changes.
  • sync-models.ts: runs daily at 06:00 UTC, and you can also start it manually. It pushes to automated/sync-models, opens the sync PR, and opens a sync-models issue when a sync step fails.
  • knip.json: knip ignores .source/. Without this, test:knip reports the workflow files as unused files.

Notes:

  • The E2E tests use aimock on 127.0.0.1. They need no API key.
  • The test jobs use the browser image. It has the browsers of Playwright 1.57.0, the version in pnpm-lock.yaml. pnpm install runs the Playwright postinstall of testing/e2e, and this postinstall downloads nothing.
  • Nx Cloud is off in these jobs (NX_NO_CLOUD). Nx uses the task cache of the forge. No secret is necessary.

Not ported in this PR:

  • coverage: it must update one PR comment on each push. The forge cannot edit comments yet.
  • preview (pkg-pr-new): it needs the pkg.pr.new GitHub App.
  • release, ai-review, ai-review-signal, maintainer-*, zizmor and autofix: these depend on GitHub.

⚠️ The Source checks fail on this PR. This is expected.

A pull request run on Source takes the network access (egress), the secrets and the permissions of each job from the base branch. These jobs are new, so main does not give them any egress yet. On this PR they cannot reach nodejs.org or registry.npmjs.org, and they fail at Set up Node.

After the merge, the pull requests and the pushes to main run with the egress in the workflow files.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run

  • src ci plan: 4 workflows and 5 jobs load with no errors.
  • tsc on the 4 workflow files against the types of @tanstack-source/ci: no errors.
  • oxfmt 0.59.0 on the 4 files.
  • I did not run the jobs or knip locally. GitHub CI runs Test, which runs knip. The Source jobs run after the merge.

Manual test

  1. Merge this PR.
  2. Open a pull request on Source. Make sure that the pr/test, e2e/e2e and e2e/e2e-result checks start and pass.
  3. Start sync-models with src workflow run sync-models.ts --ref main. Make sure that it pushes automated/sync-models and opens the sync PR, if a model changed.

Risk / rollback

Low risk. GitHub CI does not change. Possible failures on Source after the merge: a host that is not in egress, or a cold task cache on the first runs. To undo, revert this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Added automated checks for pull requests, including package tests and end-to-end tests across multiple runs.
    • Added scheduled and manual model synchronization, with status reporting and follow-up when synchronization fails.
    • Updated code analysis settings to exclude workflow configuration files.

Port the PR test job, the E2E shards, the Bun tests and the daily
model sync from .github/workflows to .source/workflows. Nx Cloud is
off in these jobs, so Nx uses the forge's task cache. Coverage and
the pkg-pr-new preview stay on GitHub for now.
Run the test jobs on the browser image, because pnpm install runs the Playwright postinstall of testing/e2e. Upload the E2E videos, report and traces after each shard, also when it fails. knip ignores .source/, so the Test check does not report the workflow files. Nx Cloud stays off (NX_NO_CLOUD), so the jobs need no secret.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds workflows for pull request tests, Bun tests, and sharded E2E tests. It also adds a scheduled and manually triggered model synchronization workflow that reports failures and can commit package changes and open a pull request.

Changes: Test workflows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pull request and Bun tests
.source/workflows/pr.ts, .source/workflows/bun-test.ts, knip.json
The pull request workflow installs dependencies and runs test:pr. The Bun workflow builds the QuickJS Bun package and runs its tests. Knip now ignores .source/**.
Sharded E2E testing
.source/workflows/e2e.ts
The E2E workflow runs four Playwright shards, uploads each shard’s videos, report, and traces, and checks that all shards succeed.

Model synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sync commands and workflow setup
.source/workflows/sync-models.ts
Defines fetch, conversion, ElevenLabs, and provider sync commands. Configures scheduled and manual triggers, permissions, egress, and dependency setup.
Sync execution and failure reporting
.source/workflows/sync-models.ts
Runs sync commands independently and records their outcomes. When the job fails, it comments on an existing labeled issue or creates one.
Package changes and workflow result
.source/workflows/sync-models.ts
When package changes exist, formats and commits them to automated/sync-models, then opens a PR if none is open. The workflow fails if any sync command failed.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The bun-test job runs setup.bun() with no .bun-version, relying on the image's bun (comment says 1.4.4). The package requires bun >=1.3.14. Nothing pins or verifies the version, so an image update or a different browser image could silently fall below the requirement or change behavior.

Bun tests fail with confusing engine or runtime errors, or run on an unintended bun version.

This can occur when: The browser image is rebuilt or swapped with a bun older than 1.3.14, or setup.bun() with no version file resolves a different bun than the comment assumes.

32-51: Minor · Potential issue · Quick win

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The upload step registers ctx.afterJob callbacks with always: true. The step is placed first so the registrations happen before a later failure. Each upload uses a path under testing/e2e/..., relative to an unverified working directory. The video glob uses test-results/**/*.webm and the report path is a directory. If the afterJob hooks run in a different cwd, or if the artifact helper errors on a missing path, uploads fail or are skipped.

The artifact upload step fails on an empty match and can turn passing shards red, or it could mask the real failure in the logs.

This can occur when: A shard produces no videos (video is 'retain-on-failure', so a passing shard has none) or no traces ('on-first-retry'), so the glob matches nothing.

Expand the Bun workflow path filter.

The Bun package also depends on @tanstack/ai-isolate-quickjs, and the workflow builds workspace dependencies before running test:bun. Changes to that package, pnpm-lock.yaml, or .nvmrc can therefore affect the Bun tests without starting this workflow. Add those paths to the filter.

Register the failure callback before setup and install.

If setup.node(), setup.pnpm(), or Install fails, execution never reaches .source/workflows/sync-models.ts:76, so no afterJob callback exists to open the failure issue. Register the callback in an earlier step and keep its failure state in the shared workflow scope.

Register the ctx.afterJob failure callback before setup.node(), setup.pnpm(),
and Install can fail, rather than reaching registration only afterward. Keep the
failure state in shared workflow scope so the callback can open or comment on
the failure issue for failures in those earlier steps.

Detect generated metadata changes before committing.

A successful run can change scripts/*.models.json or scripts/.sync-models-last-run without changing packages/. The package-only guard then skips the commit and push. This can leave the tracked catalog stale and can leave the model-age cutoff based on an old timestamp. The new Source workflow reproduces the same pre-existing guard as .github/workflows/sync-models.yml; it does not add a separate merge-risk regression.

Check the generated paths that the commit stages:

Review comment at @.source/workflows/sync-models.ts around lines 112 - 116:
Update the `changed` guard to check the generated model catalogs,
`scripts/.sync-models-last-run`, and `.changeset/` in addition to `packages/`,
matching the paths staged by the subsequent `git add` command so metadata-only
changes trigger the commit and push.
