feat: Updated editor body colors (BLO-1232) (BLO-1240) (BLO-1331) - #3206
This PR updates editor body colors (UI elements like menus and toolbars are out of scope) to hit WCAG 2.0 AA contrast requirements and converts their CSS variables to use the OKLCH color space instead of RGB. OKLCH is a polar color space similar to HSL, but has 2 key advantages:
It supports wide color gamuts. Computer displays can't reproduce all colors that the human eye can see, and the color gamut that a display is capable of showing varies. This means that the same HSL color can end up looking washed out on one display and oversaturated on another, unless they're calibrated to the same gamut. OKLCH uses arbitrary values for its equivalent saturation and lightness rather than being mapped directly to display pixel values, so colors look much more consistent across different displays.
It takes into account human perception of color and contrast. In HSL, a gradient created by sweeping across all hue values will have noticeable darker and lighter bands as some colors appear brighter or darker to us at the same luminance level. OKLCH accounts for this, so sweeping the hue results in a much smoother gradient.
The second advantage is useful to us as it makes it much easier to ensure each highlight color has the same relative saturation and brightness. With HSL/RGB, it takes a lot of trial and error to do this.
The new color palette targets the P3 gamut. While not all modern displays have good coverage of P3 (sRGB is standard for most web content, P3 is typically used for consumer HDR content), this is a deliberate decision as it allows us to increase the vibrancy of highlight colors with a small tradeoff to consistency for displays which don't support P3. If we target sRGB, colors end up looking overly washed out, even if they will be more consistent across devices.
While the most significant changes have been made to highlight colors, the following colors have been adjusted too to hit the contrast requirements:
Dark mode quote block text
Dark mode add file button text
Toggle block "add block" button text
Verified that axe scans from out a11y tests no longer report contrast issues. An important thing to note is that placeholder contrast is currently untested and so placeholder colors have not been updated as part of this PR, only colors which have been caught to not pass WCAG contrast requirements when running an axe scan of the editor body. See #3205 for more info.
There's a temporary highlight-color-comparison.html file to inspect the old vs new highlight colors (to be removed before merging). The screenshots below are taken from it.

Walkthrough
The editor’s light and dark color palettes now use OKLCH values, and editor styles use theme color variables with fallbacks. A new playground example compares block and inline color combinations across themes. The block-comparison test also clears persisted toggle state before and after each run.

Improve color palette accessibility: The palette updates address the issue’s color-contrast objective. The change does not add a restricted picker or a warning for custom colors.
some table colors do not meet contrast requirements: The palette updates include text and highlight colors used in the editor, but the change summary does not describe a table-specific contrast check.
Green is too dark: The palette updates include green text and background colors, though the change summary does not state that the requested green outcome was validated.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 34668
The new editor palette and example look safe to merge. Two small follow-ups remain: add fallback declarations for the selection overlay on browsers without color-mix(), and correct the example's Vite source paths so live-source aliases work when developing it.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Summary, Rationale, Changes, Impact, Testing, Screenshots/Video, Checklist, and Additional Notes. The Summary explains the OKLCH conversion, the WCAG AA contrast goal, and the P3 gamut decision. Rationale and Testing are short but present. The Changes section lists only two bullets, and the Impact section says N/A. The Checklist leaves unit tests and documentation unchecked. The Summary also refers to a temporary highlight-color-comparison.html file that must be removed before merge.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR updates the default text and background palette to OKLCH values. The color-combinations example checks block and inline text/background combinations in both themes and reports 0 of 100 combinations below 4.5:1. These changes address the restricted accessible palette requested by [#2852] and the table contrast requirement in [#2827]. The shared green palette is also updated and included in the contrast combinations, which addresses [#3043]. The PR adds no free-form color picker. The linked issues do not require feature-specific automated tests.

Explanation

The reviewed changes also replace colors for menus, tooltips, and side menus in packages/react/src/editor/styles.css. packages/core/src/editor/Block.css also changes code-preview UI, page-break borders, file controls, and list-column separators. The summary does not establish that these additional UI changes are required by [#2852], [#2827], or [#3043].
Resolution
Limit the diff to editor body colors and the listed contrast fixes. Revert unrelated menu, tooltip, side-menu, code-preview, page-break, and other UI color changes unless the PR scope is expanded and each change is justified.

I ended up changing all the color values we use in the editor body to OKLCH. Doesn't really make a difference outside of highlight colors but I would rather stick with using one color space for everything.

Add a doctype before <html>.
When the standalone example opens, the missing doctype puts the document in quirks mode. That makes the visual comparison use legacy rendering rules. Add <!doctype html> to the generating template and regenerate this file. (html.spec.whatwg.org)

Point the example's source guard and core/react aliases at the repository root.
From examples/04-theming/08-color-combinations/, ../../ resolves to examples/, not the repository root. The existence guard therefore fails inside the repository, and the config selects empty aliases. @blocknote/core and @blocknote/react then resolve through the installed packages, not packages/core/src and packages/react/src, so live source changes are not loaded. Use ../../../ for the guard and for those two aliases. The @shared alias already uses ../../../.
This file is marked as generated. Regenerating it from packages/dev-scripts/examples/template-react/vite.config.ts.template.tsx produces the same change, because the template already uses ../../../.

Add fallback declarations for the selection fill and outline.
Browsers without color-mix() treat each color-mix() declaration as invalid and drop it. Safari 15.4–16.1 supports oklch() but not color-mix(). In those versions, the selection fill and outline are not painted. Add a literal fallback before each color-mix() declaration. Apply the same change to the other selection rules that now use color-mix().
