ℹ️ About Codex in GitHub

Your team has set up Codex to review pull requests in this repo. Reviews are triggered when you

  • Open a pull request for review
  • Mark a draft as ready
  • Comment "@codex review" or "@codex security review".

Codex reacts with 👀 while any review is running, comments if it has suggestions, and reacts with 👍 once all reviews finish with no findings.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a GitHub Actions workflow for Claude Code Review on eligible pull request events. The workflow filters forked pull requests and bot actors, limits concurrent runs, checks out the repository, authenticates Claude Code, and configures sequential reviews and comment deduplication.

Changes: Claude Code Review workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pull request review workflow
.github/workflows/claude-code-review.yml
The workflow handles opened, synchronized, ready-for-review, and reopened pull requests. It excludes forked pull requests and bot actors, cancels earlier runs for the same pull request, checks out the repository, authenticates with CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN, and runs the Claude Code Review plugin. The prompt configures foreground execution, reproducible bug reporting, comment deduplication, and AGENTS.md handling.

official Anthropic Claude Code GitHub Actions documentation allowedTools claude_args prompt pull_request security

💡 Result:

The official `anthropics/claude-code-action` docs say:

- **`prompt`** runs Claude in automation mode; it can include GitHub context such as the PR number. ([github.com](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code-action/blob/main/docs/custom-automations.md?utm_source=openai))
- **`claude_args`** passes Claude CLI options. Use `--allowedTools` there to allow specific tools; arbitrary Bash is not enabled by default. ([github.com](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code-action/blob/main/docs/configuration.md?utm_source=openai))
- **Security:** treat PR content as untrusted prompt-injection input. The security guide warns that `pull_request_target` and `workflow_run` run with base-repository secrets; checking out a PR head means Claude operates on that checkout. Keep workflow permissions minimal and restrict tools. ([github.com](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code-action/blob/main/docs/security.md?utm_source=openai))

For untrusted PR input, the docs recommend `claude-code-action` rather than the lower-level `claude-code-base-action`, because the former includes actor permission checks and restores selected Claude configuration from the base branch. ([github.com](https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code-action/blob/main/base-action/README.md?utm_source=openai))

Example pattern:

```yaml
- uses: anthropics/claude-code-action@v1
  with:
    prompt: "Review PR #${{ github.event.pull_request.number }} for security issues."
    claude_args: |
      --allowedTools "Read,Grep,Glob"
    anthropic_api_key: ${{ secrets.ANTHROPIC_API_KEY }}
```

This is a minimal illustration, not a complete secure workflow; choose tools and event permissions for your use case.

Claude Code CLI official documentation --allowedTools --disallowedTools --tools permission mode

💡 Result:

Here’s how the flags differ in Anthropic’s Claude Code CLI docs:

- **`--allowedTools`**: Allow listed tools to run without asking for permission, alongside rules in `settings.json`. Example: `claude --allowedTools "Bash(git log:*)" Read`.
- **`--disallowedTools`**: Disallow listed tools, alongside `settings.json` rules. Example: `claude --disallowedTools "Bash(git commit)" Edit`.
- **`--permission-mode`**: Select the session’s permission mode, e.g. `claude --permission-mode plan`. It changes the permission behavior; it is not a tool allowlist.
- **`--tools`**: I couldn’t verify this as a documented flag in the official CLI reference I found. That reference lists the three flags above, but its page may not cover every current CLI version. ([docs.anthropic.com](https://docs.anthropic.com/en/docs/claude-code/cli-usage?utm_source=openai))

The CLI reference describes `--allowedTools` and `--disallowedTools` as additional to `settings.json`; the SDK docs also show these flags used with MCP tool names. ([docs.anthropic.com](https://docs.anthropic.com/fr/docs/claude-code/sdk?utm_source=openai))

Do not expose the OAuth token to the review agent.

The configured code-review command grants Bash(gh pr comment:*) and reads the pull request diff. The Claude SDK retains CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN in its environment. A prompt injected into the PR can therefore run:

gh pr comment "$PR" --body "$CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN"

The shell expands the token and sends it in a pull-request comment. The workflow's --allowedTools value does not disable the command-level Bash permission. Use an authentication path that is not readable by Claude subprocesses, and remove command-capable tools or route GitHub operations through a trusted wrapper.

# Without the system prompt the main agent skipped the command's agents and skimmed the diff
# itself, calling a 33-file refactor "mechanical", then posted "No issues found" on a pull
# request with three planted bugs. With it, every step's agents run and all three were caught.

Never review the diff yourself in place of the agents, and never skip or merge steps because a pull request looks small, mechanical or obviously correct. Step 1 may stop the review only when the pull request is closed, is a draft, or already has a review comment from Claude. Pin the Claude action and plugin to reviewed immutable commits.

.github/workflows/claude-code-review.yml:30 uses the mutable anthropics/claude-code-action@v1 tag, and line 38 loads the plugin marketplace from the repository's default branch without a ref. An upstream tag or branch update can therefore change code executed by a later pull-request event without a workflow change. That code runs with CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN and the job's configured permissions. Pin both references to reviewed commit SHAs.

Pin the `anthropics/claude-code-action` reference and the plugin marketplace
source used by this workflow to reviewed immutable commit SHAs instead of the
mutable `v1` tag and default branch; leave the `claude_args` behavior unchanged.

# pull request are not posted again. Listing those needs the read-only gh api rule.

Never review the diff yourself in place of the agents, and never skip or merge steps because a pull request looks small, mechanical or obviously correct. Change 1: step 1 may stop the review only when the pull request is closed or is a draft. Earlier reviews by Claude are not a reason to stop; every push gets a full review of the whole pull request. Change 2: a bug that depends on particular input or state is high signal when normal use reaches that input or state, for example a field edited to an empty string or false, an optional value that is missing, a request that fails, or a list with more than one entry. Flag it when you can name the concrete scenario and the wrong result. This replaces the command's rule against flagging issues that depend on specific inputs or state; still skip speculative, stylistic and nitpick issues. Pass this rule word for word to every step 4 and step 5 agent. Change 3: before step 8, run gh api repos/${{ github.repository }}/pulls/${{ github.event.pull_request.number }}/comments --paginate and gh pr view ${{ github.event.pull_request.number }} --repo ${{ github.repository }} --comments, each as a standalone command without pipes or redirects, to see what Claude (claude or claude[bot]) already posted on this pull request. Drop every issue Claude already reported, matching by file and underlying problem even when line numbers moved, and post only the rest. If nothing remains, post the No issues found summary only when Claude has never commented on this pull request; otherwise post nothing. Change 4: treat AGENTS.md files exactly like CLAUDE.md files; a CLAUDE.md often only imports AGENTS.md with an @AGENTS.md line."

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check existing comments before the no-issues branch.

If a later push has no findings, the code-review command posts “No issues found” and stops before step 8. The new check therefore cannot prevent a second summary comment. Move the prior-comment check before the command’s no-issues branch so clean pushes do not post duplicate summaries. (github.com)
