Stacked this PR on #1236 to reuse its existing test-stabilization work rather than duplicate the PubSub assertion fix. The feature diff remains the same eight pre-Phase-D evidence files. Production behavior is unchanged from the previously reviewed feature commit; the merge only incorporates dependency tests. The previous feature head's code and security reviews found no issues. Its Linux adapter race suite passed; only the unrelated initial PubSub assertion failed. That assertion is now verified by its SUBSCRIBE acknowledgment in #1236. Local short adapter tests, focused evidence race tests, kv tests, lint, and Jepsen harness tests pass; full local gRPC stress exceeded its timeout and is not reported as a pass. Please review the new integrated HEAD. Merge order: #1236, then #1289. @codex review |

Allow first primary commits across Phase-D activation
When a multi-shard transaction obtains a pre-Phase-D commit timestamp and finishes preparing just before Phase D activates, its first primary COMMIT can reach this path afterward if the coordinator is a follower of the primary group. The commit record required here is created by that same COMMIT in buildCommitStoreMutations, so PrimaryCommitEvidence reports a readable but missing record and this classification rejects the request before it can propose; dispatchMultiShardTxn then aborts every prepared participant. Thus an otherwise valid transaction crossing the activation boundary is forced to abort. The existing-record requirement needs to distinguish secondary resolution/retry from the first commit of the primary, or accept another durable proof for that primary commit.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The first primary COMMIT is now distinguished from replay: it must actually mutate the primary key and the local applied-read-fenced store must contain a matching primary lock and intent for the same startTS. A missing secondary decision, an unprepared primary, and a mismatched existing decision still fail. The transaction is not silently retimestamped after PREPARE. Added direct Forward and durable-store regressions. The design explicitly remains Partial: prepared state does not prove issuance of the chosen pre-D commit timestamp, so full closure needs a revised proof/admission protocol.

Wait for the primary read index to be applied
When the locally hosted primary group has committed a legacy decision but its FSM is still applying the log—for example immediately after a leader change—this check can incorrectly treat the record as absent. VerifyLeader is implemented by submitRead(ctx, false), so it confirms quorum leadership and returns the read index without waiting for the local applied index, whereas the following localGetAt reads the current FSM store. A readable missing result is then considered definitive and rejects a legitimate resolution. Use the applied read fence (LinearizableRead, which calls submitRead(ctx, true)) before making negative evidence authoritative.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Replaced quorum-only VerifyLeader with a bounded LinearizableRead before reading primary evidence, so the FSM must apply the returned read index before a negative record lookup is authoritative. Added a regression that withholds the applied fence, writes the committed decision, then releases the fence and requires the found record. Focused race tests pass.
|
Addressed both current-head findings in commit 2794c8c:
The focused kv/adapter race regressions passed five repetitions and focused lint reports 0 issues. Both new regressions were checked with temporary overlays: removing the first-primary branch fails the cutover test; restoring VerifyLeader fails the applied-index test. The repository sources do not contain either mutation. Caller audit: the timestamp validator is called only by fillForwardedTxnCommitTS -> stampTxnTimestamps -> stampTimestamps -> Forward; failure returns before transactionManager.Commit. The production Internal registration supplies the local ShardStore reader. ABORT and valid post-D timestamps bypass the legacy evidence path. @codex review |

Security: Bound legacy evidence reads per forwarded batch
When Phase D is enabled, a caller that can reach the private unauthenticated Internal/Forward RPC and knows one pre-D committed transaction can repeat that COMMIT metadata throughout a ≤64 MiB batch. This loop performs a fresh applied LinearizableRead for every duplicate before any proposal, so even meta-only entries that the FSM rejects later consume an unbounded sequence of quorum round trips; each stalled read also receives a new 5-second timeout. Deduplicate evidence reads, fence once per owner, and cap the batch budget.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Evidence is now deduplicated by primary key before I/O, capped at 64 unique primaries, and evaluated under one five-second batch deadline (or the earlier caller deadline). The production batch reader shares a single applied fence per owner instead of resetting a quorum read per metadata entry. Tests cover 512 duplicate entries, one fence per owner, zero reads on limit rejection, identical fallback deadlines, and cancellation of a stalled fence. Five focused race repetitions and lint pass.
|
Bounded legacy evidence work per forwarded batch:
Regression tests verify 512 repeated metadata entries become one two-key batch call, both single-key fallback reads share the same deadline, each owner is fenced only once, oversize batches perform zero reads, and caller deadlines cancel stalled applied fences. The focused kv/adapter race suite passed five repetitions and lint reports 0 issues. Caller audit found normal legacy COMMIT and resolver senders construct one request per primary/group, so the 64-key cap does not constrain those paths. Evidence errors still return through Forward before any transaction proposal. The partial first-primary timestamp-proof limitation remains explicitly documented. @codex review |

New final pushed HEAD: a578349. Previous 6e2852e receipts are stale and must not be used for merge. Implements the approved durable PREPARE-proof/activation-gate extension, including the independent-review P1 correction for restored staging promotion. Exact old-staging snapshot/promote/reopen regression was red before the fix; migration/store race x3, V1/V3 ABORT recovery race x3, joint pending/partial-release recovery race x5, real nine-engine gRPC acceptance and latest focused integration race all pass. Changed caller/error paths were audited; input refusal does not halt replication, actual store failures retain HaltApply. New-diff scoped lint is clean; local unfiltered baseline/platform issues are explicitly documented. This PR stays Draft while final-head CI and review run. @codex review |

Added a combined Pebble snapshot/checkpoint + PREPARE seal/release recovery regression, including actual reopen, matching COMMIT proof, old-epoch refusal, idempotent release and subsequent snapshot preservation. KV/store/Raft snapshot-migration race x3, root checkpoint race x3, adapter Phase-D acceptance race and full repository new-diff lint pass. No new production behavior beyond the accepted main integration. Process-level rollout remains Partial. Earlier a578349 receipts are stale for this integrated HEAD. @codex review |

Security: Authenticate and bound prepare-evidence scans
When --adminTokenFile is unset and a caller can reach a per-group gRPC listener, this new RPC remains registered while AdminTokenAuth("") installs no interceptor. Sending capability_only=false with floor=0 reaches this line after a linearizable read and scans every transaction-lock and staged-migration row, page after page, with only the caller's deadline. Repeated concurrent requests can therefore impose unbounded leader disk/CPU and quorum work. Require a peer credential even when Admin is disabled, and add a server-owned work budget or cached/singleflight scan result.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in bf993a2 (implementation e535e55). Every production per-group handler independently checks the existing forwarded-control credential before capability or quorum work, even without Admin interceptors; absent configuration denies the RPC. One active inspection per handler, no waiting queue, and a shared server-owned five-second fence/scan deadline bound work; earlier caller deadlines are retained. Regressions reproduced unauthenticated acceptance, unbounded deadline and duplicate quorum work before the fix. Tests also cover unrelated tokens, concurrent capability probes, permit reuse and no partial result on scan timeout. Main integration focused race and PR-diff lint pass. No unmerged #1090 credential runtime copied.

Migrate existing keys before reserving control names
Upgrading a store that already contains a legitimate user value at any of these exact keys can halt the shard: the parent revision allowed these names (only !txn|backup|timestamp_floor was reserved), but reloadPrepareEvidence now reads them as protocol records and rejects ordinary values as malformed. Even values that happen to match the wire format can later be overwritten by activation, so these newly claimed names need a collision-free namespace or an explicit migration/refusal procedure before they are treated as peer-local state.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in bf993a2. The three records now occupy the previously reserved !txn|meta|prepare_evidence/{enabled,gate,timestamp_floor} namespace. Old backup names are ordinary user rows with no fallback or byte-based protocol detection. Memory/Pebble regressions preserve ordinary and exact prototype wire bytes, all versions/TTL/tombstones across actual snapshot/reopen/restore and real import->promote; normal writes to old names still work. Exact new control records are excluded from every export family and refused by import/promotion. The unreleased-layout caveat is documented: no deployment occurred here; a known prototype deployment requires validated offline recovery rather than guessing from bytes. No Store API or snapshot format change.

Report dedicated TSO only when the coordinator is wired
In a rolling deployment using the legacy flags without --tsoModeFile, a node can start in legacy warm-up and take the early return in configureDedicatedCoordinatorTSO, leaving its coordinator without a TSO allocator. If another node later commits cutover, this response nevertheless reports DedicatedTsoConfigured=true merely because the local TSO state exists, so CheckPhaseDProtocol can release Phase D while that node is not ready; its subsequent writes fail with ErrTSOAllocatorRequired because durable Phase D disables its remaining HLC path. The capability needs to reflect actual routed/runtime allocator wiring, not just the presence of the state machine.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in bf993a2. DedicatedTsoConfigured now requires both nonnil state and the actually installed timestamp allocator. The regression uses configureCoordinatorTSO and production internalTimestampOptions, comparing legacy-flag warmup with routed cutover wiring before/after real cutover application. Warmup remains unready even after observing cutover; a marker alone cannot advertise runtime readiness. Caller/wrapper audit and root/adapter race pass.

## Scope Implementation of `docs/design/2026_10_17_proposed_ttl_inline_cross_leader_legacy_rows.md`, consolidated in this existing PR. The reviewed proposal remains Proposed until its runtime implementation and acceptance evidence are complete. This PR is intentionally draft during implementation. Base: `main`, integrated through `e9f69f88802bad2cc868fd8f0b7594917ca133eb`, including merged #1289 timestamp controls and #1291 shutdown handoff. The existing TTL-inline pass observations and metrics from merged #1283 are inherited rather than duplicated. No unmerged implementation is copied from another PR. The latest update resolves integration conflicts only and adds no new TTL feature or design scope. ## Progress - Integrated the separately tested legacy-metadata physical-page reporting foundation. - Atomic absence is implemented through protobuf/coordinator/1PC/store and remains refused by default until durable capability activation is implemented. Old-version/tombstone and same-entry conflict tests failed before the fix and passed afterward. - Delta and TTL migration plans share a timeout-aware top-level rotation. Completed classification snapshots, status and audit integration remain incomplete. - Implemented deterministic generation-tagged pin transitions, a durable state/index journal and a control-group identity allocator. Missing Release/Expire retire delayed admissions; stale expiry preserves an extended pin. Snapshot/reopen, failed-write, counter-exhaustion and encrypted-state regressions pass. Control records use the already-reserved transaction metadata namespace and preserve historical user keys. - Typed pin/allocation commands now have a strict decoder and actual FSM apply/restore paths. The highest admitted backup timestamp persists after release/expiry and fences delayed writes after restart. New-epoch state refuses legacy pin entries and cannot use legacy compaction while the real quorum/floor protocol is missing. There is no production producer or activation path for the new command format; a test-only seeded epoch/capability is not rollout evidence. - M1b capability/downgrade fencing, allocator fan-out, token/caller migration, durable drain/activation, read admission and compaction protection remain incomplete. The new protocol is not enabled by this incremental implementation. - M2 peer relocation RPC, owner-leader apply, contiguous-prefix checkpointing and seeded Jepsen validation remain incomplete. No migration milestone is declared complete by the foundation or by the earlier design review. Legacy TTL and dual-route point-read fallbacks remain enabled. ## Verification At `e8b21e81b7e577a3c1f0bef24e78ddccb6de4956`, integrated with main `e9f69f88`: full store/KV/distribution race suites pass on Go 1.27.1. The integration revision also passed adapter authentication/prepare-evidence forwarding/TTL migration/rotation tests and root prepare-evidence/shutdown tests three repetitions. The new memory/Pebble coexistence regression verifies both protocols through snapshot restore while retaining rejection of legacy backup lifecycle entries after pin-epoch activation. CI-version full-repository diff lint reports zero issues and diff check passes. The commit is signed, with bootjp <contact@bootjp.me> as author and committer. The integration review's P1 namespace finding is fixed using the existing store namespace predicate in export selection and the shared import/promote peer-local guard. Export, atomic import and restored-staging promotion regressions failed before the fix and pass after it. Repeated race coverage verifies raw journal/future control exclusion, preservation of the literal normalized user key and historical prepare-evidence user aliases, unchanged journal bytes across snapshot/reopen, no partial promotion/checkpoint advance, and reuse of a rejected import batch sequence for ordinary user data. No cursor logic or unmerged #1090 implementation is copied. The normal commit hook was attempted. The installed local linter cannot read Go 1.27 data. The CI linter's full-repository check reports 83 findings on both pristine main and the integrated tree; the integration-specific dispatch complexity was fixed, unrelated baseline files were not changed, and the hook was bypassed for this signed commit. CI-version diff lint and CI remain verification gates. Earlier-head evidence includes full adapter race (786.5 seconds) and about 74,000 wire-fuzz inputs; it is not presented as a current-head rerun. A [standalone manual review](#1280 (comment)) was requested after the latest push for this exact head. [Code review](#1280 (comment)) returned no major issues and [security review](#1280 (comment)) returned no issues. Current-head root inline findings: zero; the fixed P1 thread is replied to and resolved. Required build/lint/Ubuntu race checks, both Jepsen matrix legs and CodeQL pass. No CI failure or running check remains; the optional Claude checks are skipped. Merge state is CLEAN, but this incomplete PR remains draft and is not ready for merge. Main's prepare-evidence namespace and peer authentication are preserved, its existing migration guards are extended only for the already-reserved TTL control namespace, and the user's rolling-update.sh is untouched. No unmerged #1090 implementation was copied. Full protocol acceptance and seeded legacy-row migration Jepsen evidence remain incomplete; this update does not resume or expand M1b/M2 implementation. Summary
Scope And Risk
Base is now main; #1236 and the shared integration fixes are merged, not duplicated. The authenticated capability RPC and group-zero snapshot V5 are protocol changes. Activation requires all members to support them; downgrade after activation is not supported by this PR.
Legacy local-primary resolution work remains bounded: at most 64 distinct primary keys, one applied leader fence per local owner, one five-second batch budget. Remote or unready primary owners remain unknown. Existing COMMIT and ABORT remain usable while creation is sealed. The backup-pin floor remains distinct from the cutover floor.
This establishes durable chosen-timestamp evidence, not individual numeric slot ownership inside a reserved batch; the separate slot-claim design retains that responsibility. The design remains Partial pending full process-level rolling-upgrade and production acceptance. No production deployment, membership repair, or operational-stability result is claimed.
All changed validator, timestamp-admission and promotion error paths had their callers audited. Local transaction-manager request copies prevent a later retry from changing the epoch of an earlier queued request. Deployments without a dedicated group-zero TSO state do not install that extra local admission wrapper.
