Add filesystem operation journal and extended test runs - #1341
Add opt-in journal-backed fixed-offset writes, setattr including size changes, create/mknod, mkdir, open, release, lease renewal, file unlink, empty-directory removal, and same-directory rename with retained original results.
Coalesce journaled lease renewals while checking open-handle validity on intervening reads. Verify older lease receipts before removing them from the local fsync set.
Cancel write attempts that fail before publication with a stable typed result, so duplicates and session closure can proceed.
Add a reply-attempt callback to the pinned go-fuse bridge and retire terminal operation IDs only after their FUSE reply was attempted and participant receipts were verified.
Add explicit --filesystemStrict and --filesystemStrictRecover mount controls, graceful session closure, and fenced recovery of a stopped prior incarnation.
Verify committed participant receipts for journaled local predecessors during FUSE flush, file fsync, and directory fsync.
Extend Go and Jepsen test durations and increase the scheduled SQLite history budget.
Validation
The repository race suite passed at the previous head with the two full-length gRPC sequences separated. The full-length gRPC sequence tests passed with -race -timeout=30m in 491.868 seconds.
Filesystem race tests and lint passed after the review changes. Linux /dev/fuse tests passed three consecutive runs after the review changes for journaled create/open/release/mkdir, lease renewal, writes, truncate/setattr, unlink, rmdir, rename, and file/directory fsync.
Strict mode passed three real Linux FUSE mutation runs. A separate mounted test performed 4200 writes without exhausting the 4096-record journal limit. Existing journaled mount tests passed with reply-bound acknowledgement.
Definitive rejection conflicts now replan under a generation fence; injected-conflict regressions passed. A local Pebble close/reopen test recovered journaled mutation results and receipts. A process-kill test recovered create, write, truncate, and rename receipts from the Pebble WAL without closing the store.
The local full repository race run passed the filesystem packages but hit one unrelated backup renewal timing failure under parallel load; that test passed ten isolated race reruns.
The scheduled Jepsen filesystem cluster now starts with --filesystemStrict; its result is tracked separately from the local mounted tests.
Remaining before production default
Prove durable ordering and receipts across Raft WAL persistence, FSM apply, participant proof visibility, and node crashes.
Run Jepsen fault campaigns, SQLite crash/lock runs, benchmarks, and canary limits.
The strict path is available only with an explicit mount flag. The default mount remains unchanged while these gates are open.

A transient failure while recording a write’s cancellation can leave that operation unresolved and prevent normal session closure. That recovery case should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

This PR touches files that the TLA+ safety spec has an anchor on (per docs/design/2026_05_28_implemented_tla_safety_spec.md §3),
so an AI review is requested below to verify the implementation has not drifted
from the model.
kv/hlc*.go — Next() must respect the HLC-4 preconditions (i)/(ii)/(iii) from the design doc: bounded skew, logical-counter handoff on leader change (strategy (c) Observe(MaxAppliedHLC)), and the commit-time ceiling fence (fail-closed when wall_now >= physicalCeiling). Any change to the bit layout (48/16), the CAS loop, or the ceiling getter/setter is in scope.
kv/coordinator.go, kv/sharded_coordinator.go — RunHLCLeaseRenewal, hlcRenewalInterval, hlcPhysicalWindowMs constants, and the new-term detection that calls Observe(fsm.MaxAppliedHLC()) (strategy (c)). Any change to renewal cadence, group selection, or fail-closed behaviour is in scope.
kv/transaction.go, kv/lock_resolver.go — OCC commit-ts assignment, lock-map encoding (key, lock_ts) -> start_ts, and the LockResolver action OCC-3 depends on. (M2 spec will land OCC-1..OCC-5; until then the spec doc §5.2 is the contract.)
kv/fsm.go — FSM apply of HLC lease entries (SetPhysicalCeiling), and any future MaxAppliedHLC() accessor that strategy (c) needs.
store/mvcc_store.go — version visibility, snapshot install, and the MVCC-1..MVCC-4 invariants (M3 scope).
If the change is correct but requires a spec update, edit tla/hlc/HLC.tla (or the corresponding M2..M5 module once landed) and the design doc in the same PR. The tla-check workflow runs the TLC model check on the same paths.

Please review the incremental diff 10ace1d7..2488c638 at current HEAD 2488c63, especially release effect sizing and its regression test. If base history or diff access is unavailable, inspect the changed files directly and state the exact scope reviewed. Do not emit a full-PR clean marker unless the entire PR diff was reviewed.
Incremental review of 10ace1d7..2488c638 (HEAD 2488c638055de561d659cfedc87d9e32f06e0cb5)
Scope reviewed: only the three files changed since 10ace1d7: operation_effect_limit.go, operation_release.go and operation_release_test.go. I read the diff and the surrounding release code. I did not run tests, lint or Jepsen. This is not a full-PR review, so I'm not emitting a clean agent-review-result:v1 marker.
Findings: none actionable in this increment.
Release effect sizing
ReleaseWithOperation now computes its limit with releaseEffectLimit. That is the old 64 KiB constant plus the encoded RefKey(inode, clientID, fh) length. The 64 KiB acts as slack for the inode, usage and other effect keys. A 65536-byte client ID needs about 65562 bytes for its RefKey alone, which previously exceeded the whole reservation. It now fits.
Orphan chunk cleanup runs after commit (reclaimCommittedOrphanBestEffort) and is not in the plan's effects, so it doesn't need reservation.
operationEffectLimitForKeys keeps its behaviour: max(minimum, sum of key lengths). The overflow check moved into the new operationEffectLimitWithSlack, so uint32 overflow still returns ErrOperationQuota. Callers of the open/lease path see no change.
Regression test
TestReleaseWithOperationSupportsLongClientID opens and releases with a 65536-byte client ID. It then checks VerifyOperationReceipt and that the lease row is gone. It matches the failure described in the earlier Codex finding.
Non-blocking notes
operationEffectLimitWithSlack has no direct unit test for the overflow branch.
Unlink and rename keep fixed reservations. They don't appear to publish client-ID-bearing keys, but please confirm that when you next touch them.
A regular code review gets triggered (for example, "@codex review" or when a PR is opened), and you’re opted in so security review runs alongside code review

Please inspect current HEAD 1989dcc, especially terminal contention results for create/open/write/setattr/unlink/rename/lease/release and the scheduled Jepsen matrix. State the scope actually reviewed and any actionable findings. Emit a full-review completion marker only if the complete PR diff was reviewed.
Review of PR #1341 at 1989dcc6cfcd36474c2179b326e49114b9d6c8a4: partial, no completion marker
Scope actually reviewed: only commit 1989dcc (git show HEAD, 13 files). The checkout is shallow (git rev-parse --is-shallow-repository returns true) and git merge-base origin/main HEAD returns nothing, so I could not produce git diff origin/main...HEAD. I did not review the other ~87 files or earlier commits. I did not run tests, lint or Jepsen. I am not emitting agent-review-result:v1, because that would claim a full review I did not do.
All eight wrappers now follow the same pattern at the last retry. They fence the generation with AdvanceGeneration, then call cancelOperationContention, which calls CancelWithResult with an operation-specific code, and decode OperationCancelled into ErrContentionLimit. Replays of the same ID now return a stable result instead of ErrTransactionOutcomeUnknown, and CloseSession is no longer blocked by a leftover pending generation.
The result codes do not collide with existing ones: create 4, open 2, lease 2, release 2, rename 5, unlink 5, setattr 3, and write goes through the existing cancelWritePlanningFailure.
Cleanup uses context.WithoutCancel with a bounded timeout. If the cancel cannot be proven, it falls back to Resolve, then to ErrTransactionOutcomeUnknown. It never claims an abort it cannot prove.
cancelledOperationError returns ErrOperationRecordCorrupt for any other cancelled code, which is the safe default.
ErrContentionLimit maps to EBUSY in the FUSE adapter (adapter.go:109).
Journal CAS loops (Admit, BeginAttempt, AdvanceGeneration, Acknowledge, RetireUnadmitted, setSessionClosed, EnsureFilesystem, RegisterSessionWithID) now back off with jitter, and the retry count rose from 8 to 64. Exhaustion returns ErrContentionLimit instead of the misleading ErrOperationQuota. The new TestOperationMetadataConflictsDoNotReportQuota covers this.
Findings (non-blocking, none introduced as a regression):
Replay after owner-session recovery.RecoverOwnerSession cancels pending records via Cancel (operation_journal_exec.go:384), which stores an empty result. Replaying such an ID through release, lease, rename or unlink hits the empty-result guard and returns ErrOperationRecordCorrupt. This is not new in this commit, but the new OperationCancelled branches look like the natural place to handle it. For example, accept an empty-result cancel and map it to a retryable error (or kv.ErrTransactionOutcomeUnknown).
Test coverage. I only read the first lines of operation_contention_test.go (151 lines). Please confirm there is a replay-after-exhaustion test plus a CloseSession check for each of the eight wrappers, and not only for write and create. The CLAUDE.md rule asks for a regression test with each fix.
Worst-case latency. With 64 CAS retries at up to writeConflictMaxBackoffMillis of jitter, a hot session row can hold a mutation for a long time. It is bounded only by the caller's context for most paths. Fine if intended; consider noting the bound in the design doc.
The split into 20 independent matrix jobs with fail-fast: false looks correct. Each job builds only what it needs: filesystem-* and sqlite build /tmp/elastickv-bin, the rest build the demo, and unit builds nothing.
The step if: conditions are mutually consistent. The demo cluster is not launched for the filesystem or sqlite jobs, so the old "stop demo before filesystem cluster" step is correctly gone.
The filesystem cluster launch has --filesystemStrict (line 257), matching the PR description.
The per-type job uses timeout-minutes: 6 against a 60s workload and a timeout 240 guard. This is tight, since JVM and lein startup plus cluster launch count toward the 6 minutes. Consider 8–10 if you see flaky timeouts.
S3 and redis jobs each use one demo cluster per runner. This is more runner minutes but removes cross-workload interference.
TLA+ divergence
No new kv/ changes in this commit. My earlier reviews found no divergence.
To get a marker-eligible review, re-run on a checkout with full history (fetch-depth: 0) or with git fetch allowed.
@claude review please verify TLA+ spec divergence per the checklist above.

Please review current HEAD 7d438a4 and the full PR diff. If shallow checkout prevents a full review, fetch the PR base before concluding. Report actionable findings and only emit the full-review marker if all changes were reviewed.
Review of PR #1341 at 7d438a445c17f0c492df91fd7a9da5ab47c5bf85: not completed
I did not review the full PR diff, so I am not emitting an agent-review-result:v1 marker.
Blocker
The checkout is at 7d438a445c17f0c492df91fd7a9da5ab47c5bf85 but is shallow (git rev-parse --is-shallow-repository returns true). git merge-base origin/main HEAD returns nothing, so git diff origin/main...HEAD cannot be produced.
Both git fetch --unshallow origin main and git fetch origin main were denied as commands that need approval in this run.
I did not run tests, lint or Jepsen.
Findings: none reported. I inspected no diff content, so this is not a clean result.
To unblock, do one of these and re-trigger @claude review:
Set fetch-depth: 0 on the actions/checkout step.
Allow Bash(git fetch:*) and Bash(gh pr diff:*) in the workflow's allowed tools.
A regular code review gets triggered (for example, "@codex review" or when a PR is opened), and you’re opted in so security review runs alongside code review
Once complete, Codex will leave suggestions, or a comment if no findings are found.
