Description

In namespaced mode, templates returned by GET /2.0/metadata_templates/{namespace} only populate namespace and omit scope. Because @box/metadata-editor invokes fetchSuggestions with template.scope, clicking Autofill in the metadata sidebar sent POST /2.0/ai/extract_structured without metadata_template.scope (failing with 400 Bad Request), and failed to match the template in useSidebarMetadataFetcher when mapping extracted values back to template fields.

Changes made

  • Pass editingTemplate.namespace as a fallback when scope is empty in MetadataSidebarRedesign's fetchSuggestions callback.
  • Resolve the template and scope in useSidebarMetadataFetcher's extractSuggestions using scope, the matched template's namespace/scope FQN, or enterpriseFqn, and look up fields across both templates and templateInstances.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change addressing an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change adding functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature causing existing functionality to change)
  • Code refactor (no functional changes)
  • Documentation update
  • Performance improvement
  • Test addition or update
  • CI/CD configuration change

Testing done

  • Unit tests added/updated
  • Integration tests added/updated
  • Manual testing performed

Self-review checklist

  • Code follows the project's style guidelines
  • Code is properly documented (comments, JSDoc/docstrings, etc.)
  • Changes are covered by tests
  • All tests pass locally
  • No unnecessary console logs or debugging code
  • No sensitive information is exposed
  • No new warnings or errors are introduced
  • PR title follows conventional commit format

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Metadata updates now correctly target cached templates when they use a namespace without a scope, without changing templates from other namespaces.
    • Autofill suggestions now use the appropriate namespace when a scope is omitted, and correctly handle the global namespace. Suggestions continue to include the extracted field recommendations.

Walkthrough

Metadata suggestion extraction now resolves namespace-based templates and maps the global namespace to the legacy scope. Cached template updates match by namespace when the incoming instance has no scope. The development dependency version also changed.

Changes

Metadata namespace handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Suggestion scope resolution
package.json, src/elements/content-sidebar/hooks/useSidebarMetadataFetcher.ts, src/elements/content-sidebar/MetadataSidebarRedesign.tsx, src/elements/content-sidebar/__tests__/useSidebarMetadataFetcher.test.tsx
Suggestion extraction resolves a template from templates or template instances and determines the request scope from the supplied scope, template namespace, or enterprise namespace. It maps the global namespace to global. The sidebar passes the resolved scope to the extractor. Tests cover namespace-based and global scope requests. The @box/metadata-editor development dependency changed to ^2.11.17; its peer dependency remains unchanged.
Cached template update matching
src/api/Metadata.js, src/api/__tests__/Metadata.test.js
Cached template replacement uses scope when the incoming instance has one, and namespace otherwise. A test checks the request namespace and confirms that the matching cached instance is replaced while an instance from another namespace remains unchanged.

Autofill for templates in child namespaces may still fail with a 400 error, return no suggestions, or fill the wrong fields. The root-namespace case this PR targets looks correct. Resolve or explicitly accept the child-namespace behavior before merging.

Use the selected child template for Autofill field mapping.

The browser fetches child-namespace templates on selection because the sidebar loads only enterprise-root templates. The selected template is stored as editingTemplate, but extractSuggestions searches only templates and templateInstances. Its key-only fallback can return no fields or select a root template with the same key. Pass the selected template’s schema to extractSuggestions, or add it to the lookup by namespace and key.

Metadata confidence level is a measure of confidence in the accuracy of the Box’s AI—powered metadata extraction. Confidence score is a number between 0 and 1 that estimates how likely the extracted field value is correct. The higher the confidence score, the more likely the extracted field value is correct.

Confidence scores are not saved or logged. They exist only in the API response. If you need to audit or track these scores, you need to capture and store them yourself. The feature is currently limited to the `/ai/extract_structured` endpoint.

To use the confidence scores, add `"include_confidence_score": true` to your extract structured request.

A metadata template that holds the security classifications defined by an enterprise.

id

string

required

The ID of the classification template.

Example:

`"58063d82-4128-7b43-bba9-92f706befcdf"`

type

enum<string>

required

The value will always be `metadata_template`.

Available options:

`metadata_template`

Example:

`"metadata_template"`

scope

string

required

The scope of the classification template. This is in the format `enterprise_{id}` where the `id` is the enterprise ID.

Example:

`"enterprise_123456"`

templateKey

enum<string>

required

The value will always be `securityClassification-6VMVochwUWo`.

Available options:

`securityClassification-6VMVochwUWo`

Example:

`"securityClassification-6VMVochwUWo"`

displayName

enum<string>

required

The name of this template as shown in web and mobile interfaces.

Available options:

`Classification`

Example:

`"Classification"`

fields

object[]

required

A list of fields for this classification template. This includes only one field, the `Box__Security__Classification__Key`, which defines the different classifications available in this enterprise.

Required array length: `1` element

Show child attributes

hidden

boolean

Determines if the template is always available in web and mobile interfaces.

Example:

`false`

copyInstanceOnItemCopy

boolean

Determines if classifications are copied along when the file or folder is copied.

Example:

`true`</excerpt>

Do not pass a child-namespace FQN as metadata_template.scope.

When the caller omits scope, MetadataSidebarRedesign passes editingNamespace to extractSuggestions. The hook preserves that child-namespace FQN and sends it as metadata_template.scope. The Box contract documents this field as global or enterprise_{id}, so child-template Autofill can fail with 400 Bad Request.

Resolve child templates through an extraction-supported identifier. Do not replace the child namespace with its enterprise root unless that value is guaranteed to identify the selected template.

Review comment at
@src/elements/content-sidebar/hooks/useSidebarMetadataFetcher.ts at line 284:
Update the scope resolution in the hook’s extractSuggestions flow so a
child-namespace FQN is not sent as metadata_template.scope. Resolve child
templates using an extraction-supported identifier that preserves the selected
template’s identity; retain the documented global or enterprise_{id} scope
values where applicable.
