The reporter that sends TestRunStarted/TestRunFinished runs on the BrowserStack machine from its own install of this package, which has the prod collector hard-coded. Against any other collector (staging environments) those events never arrive, so TestHub keeps nameless test cases and Accessibility collapses every test in a spec into one. Make API_URL overridable via BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL and forward the launching cli's effective collector in system_env_vars, the same channel BS_TESTOPS_JWT already uses. Prod behaviour is unchanged.

On staging the collector the cli talks to is a private ingress the BrowserStack machine cannot reach, while the machine-facing public ingress is a different host. BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL, when set, is what gets forwarded to the machine; otherwise the cli's own collector is forwarded as before. Read at call time so the tests need no module reloads.

… tests
Review feedback on #1210. Collector requests carry BS_TESTOPS_JWT, so an http:// override would send it in cleartext: reject such a value instead of falling back to the default collector. The assignment moves out of the try block in setSystemEnvs because that block swallows errors, which would have turned the rejection into a silent fallback. Tests now clear both URL variables before each case and restore the originals after.

Request urls are built as `${API_URL}/${path}`, so an override carrying a query or fragment would swallow the endpoint path and the upload would hit / instead. Parse with URL, require an https protocol and a hostname, reject search and hash, and trim a trailing slash so paths are not doubled.
Jira: A11Y-13909
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A bare trailing ? or # leaves URL.search and URL.hash empty, so the value passed validation and the appended endpoint became a query or fragment; return origin + pathname with no trailing separator instead. The override can also carry credentials and callers log the error, so the messages no longer echo the value.

setSystemEnvs tests only prove the url is handed to the remote machine. These load the helper with the override set and a stubbed axios, and assert nodeRequest builds its request url from it, with the default covered when nothing is set.
Jira: A11Y-13909
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
constants.js is loaded through bin/helpers/utils.js, which every command loads, so validating at module load meant a bad BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_API_URL crashed init, info, stop and the reporter on the machine at startup, outside any handler. API_URL becomes apiUrl(), read when a request is built; nodeRequest rejects rather than throws, since its executor is async and a throw there would never reach the returned promise. validateCollectorUrls() runs at runs.js:136, before TestHubHandler.launchBuild, so a bad value fails before a build exists. Comments in constants.js trimmed to the one that earns its place.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
remoteReporterApiUrl() short-circuits past apiUrl() when the remote override is set, so a malformed general override went unchecked until the first request. validateCollectorUrls() now calls both, with a test for the short-circuit case.

… test real
Two findings from the SDK PR review:
Setting only BROWSERSTACK_TEST_OBSERVABILITY_REMOTE_API_URL leaves this process
on its built-in collector while the machine reports to another one, so the build
and its test events can land in two places with nothing detecting it. That split
is correct in the Jenkins flow, where the built-in default has been pointed at
the same environment, and wrong anywhere else - which the code cannot tell apart,
so this warns rather than rejects.
The third case in collectorUrl.js promised that loading the module never throws
on a bad value, but proxyquire's noPreserveCache clears only the proxied module
and its stubs, and the url is resolved in constants.js. That stayed a cache hit,
so hoisting the resolution to module scope would not have turned the test red -
verified by doing exactly that, which now fails. The loader drops constants.js
and the test asserts the load explicitly.
Env var names move into constants.js so the validator and the resolvers share
one spelling.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…v key
Second round of SDK PR review findings.
The warning added in the last commit interpolated the raw env value, which
contradicts the rule the validator states a few lines up: a collector url can
carry credentials and callers log it. It now logs the normalized accessor,
whose origin has already dropped any userinfo. The validator also rejects a
url carrying a username or password outright, so the stripping is explicit
rather than a silent side effect of normalization.
setSystemEnvs still spelled the forwarded key as a literal while every other
reference used the imported constant, so a rename could have split the
producer from the consumer - the exact failure this PR exists to prevent.
Tests: the no-override path (what every build takes) now has a case, and so
does the userinfo rejection.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
httpsOverride normalizes to origin + pathname, so the path survives and can
carry a token. The warning now names the host, which is the part that answers
the question it asks - whether the two collectors are the same environment -
and a test pins that a path in the value never reaches the log.

Walkthrough
Collector URLs can now be configured through environment variables, validated, and normalized. Observability requests resolve the configured URL at request time. Run setup validates both URLs, reports a remote-only configuration, and forwards the selected reporter URL.
Changes: Collector URL handling

Summary
URL selection and requests bin/testObservability/helper/constants.js, bin/testObservability/helper/helper.js, bin/testObservability/crashReporter/index.js, test/unit/bin/testObservability/collectorUrl.js
URL helpers validate and normalize primary and remote collector URLs. Observability requests and crash reports use the selected URL. Unit tests cover overrides, defaults, and request-time validation errors.
Run setup and URL forwarding bin/commands/runs.js, bin/helpers/utils.js, test/unit/bin/helpers/utils.js
Run setup validates both URLs and warns when only the remote URL is set. System environment setup forwards the selected remote reporter URL. Tests cover forwarding, warnings, and URL validation.
Collector URL overrides now work with validation and forwarding. Two hardening concerns remain: POST bodies could be replayed over plain HTTP if the collector redirects, and a collector URL containing a path token could appear in debug output. Both are narrow and need unusual conditions, so they are worth addressing or explicitly accepting, but they should not block the feature.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 8513d
The change preserves a secure default and rejects several unsafe URL forms. However, collector paths that contain secrets can reach debug output, and initial HTTPS validation does not constrain redirect destinations. Exposure depends on the configured run, enabled diagnostics, and collector behavior; broader account impact depends on the credentials involved.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The newly automatic collector forwarding preserves URL paths and feeds the complete value into the existing system-environment debug message. A secret carried in an accepted collector path is therefore exposed to console-log readers when CLI debug logging is enabled. Rejecting userinfo and hiding paths in the new warning do not protect this separate logging path.
Medium · security · inferred: HTTPS validation covers only the selected initial collector URL. Both authenticated request sinks delegate redirects to Axios without an application-level redirect-hop policy. This policy gap predates the PR, but newly configurable collectors expand the destinations whose redirect behavior must be trusted. The retained disclosure finding remains relevant; exact forwarding of bodies or authentication across particular redirect hops is unresolved.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The destination-selection exposure begins with an affected CLI process and its forwarded remote runs. Traffic includes build JWTs and account access-key authentication. If account credentials are disclosed, impact may extend to assets accessible to that account; the available source does not establish those privileges or justify a fleet-wide or cross-tenant scope.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained logging finding has a complete source trace: an accepted collector path survives normalization, automatic forwarding serializes it into system_env_vars, and the full array reaches the console logger. Disclosure requires a sensitive path, enabled CLI debug logging and access to its output. Logging arbitrary forwarded variables already existed; automatic inclusion of the collector URL is new.
inferred — The retained redirect finding concerns sensitive traffic leaving the validated initial destination through collector-controlled redirects. Initial destination control requires environment-setting authority, while a redirect path requires influence over the selected endpoint's response. Application-level hop checks are absent, but actual body, credential and downgrade behavior remains dependent on uninspected transport implementation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The environment setter now selects the initial collector owner for authenticated requests. The validator constrains URL form but does not restrict HTTPS host ownership. The fixed HTTPS default, rejection of embedded credentials and preflight validation are meaningful controls; none establishes equivalence between separately configured collector environments.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve the complete collector value for transport while redacting it from diagnostic environment dumps. Apply the same disclosure policy to normal warnings, debug output and request-error reporting.
proposed — Define an explicit redirect policy for both request sinks: disable redirects where unnecessary, or validate every hop's scheme and permitted destination while accounting for body and authentication handling in the resolved HTTP client.
proposed — Document and validate the identity relationship between local and remote collector endpoints. Consider binding validated destinations to the run lifecycle so later sends and cleanup cannot unintentionally select a different environment.

This debug line predates the PR. It has logged the whole system_env_vars array since f0e8992 (Apr 2022), and that array already carries every env var the user forwards, which is where the real secrets are. This change adds one collector URL to it.
Redacting it properly means covering every forwarded value, not just this one key, so raising it separately rather than half-fixing it here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@manish-bothra Understood. A separate fix should cover all forwarded values in the system_env_vars debug output, while leaving the actual forwarded values unchanged. Redacting only the collector URL would leave the broader exposure in place.
The collector URL can still expose a path token through this log, so the concern remains valid but deferred, not fixed.

Keep observability POST bodies on HTTPS across redirects.
If the configured HTTPS collector sends a 307 redirect to an http:// URL, Axios follows it by default and resends the POST body over plaintext HTTP. The HTTPS check in constants.js validates only the initial URL, not redirect targets. Both POST sites are affected: the axios(options) call in nodeRequest in bin/testObservability/helper/helper.js, and the crash-report analytics upload at bin/testObservability/crashReporter/index.js:151. Neither site sets maxRedirects or beforeRedirect.
A 307 response must come from the collector itself, because it is sent inside TLS. This risk therefore applies when the collector is misconfigured or compromised. Confirm the redirect behavior against the Axios and follow-redirects versions in package-lock.json. Disabling redirects on both requests closes the downgrade path. Legitimate collector redirects will then fail, so confirm that no supported deployment relies on them.

Mechanism confirmed: follow-redirects 1.16.0 drops confidential headers on an https to http redirect but still follows it, so the body would go out in cleartext.
It is pre-existing though. nodeRequest used axios the same way before this PR, which changed only where the base URL comes from, not the request options. The 307 would also have to come from the collector itself, inside TLS.
Raising it separately rather than adding commits to this PR.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@manish-bothra Agreed. The diff changes collector URL selection, not Axios redirect handling. I should have distinguished this pre-existing risk from a regression introduced by this PR.
A separate follow-up is reasonable. The security finding remains valid but deferred, so this thread stays open rather than being marked fixed.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue covering both request sites, redirect-downgrade tests, and collector redirect compatibility?
