Summary

  • Fixes BGSVIEWER-12: a replay base is kept in the capture window, and replay is shed before logs under the byte cap.
  • Streaming report export (docs/design/streaming-export.md, slices S0–S6): time plan, streaming zip assembler, streaming replay encoder (orphan trim, window clamp), bundle sinks (memory/Blob/node temp file), body-aware transports, streamed durable staging.
  • Browser default capture cap raised to 20 MB (30 MB with IndexedDB) after measurement. Export heap cost on a 20 MB window drops from about +36 MB to about +4 MB (memory store).

Known residuals

  • Capture-recovery and native-crash-recovery still use the buffered assembler.
  • Viewer unzip of the new member order is unverified.
  • IndexedDB read path not measured.

Test plan

  • Per-package vitest with the 100% line gate, lint, typecheck, cycles
  • CI

…fore logs under the byte cap

BGSVIEWER-12: a web report's replay stayed on one half-loaded page because time-only
eviction dropped rrweb's base (Meta + FullSnapshot) and left orphan incrementals.

- anchor flag (out-of-band) set on the accepted FullSnapshot; carried over Electron IPC
- ChunkCaptureStore: data/visual lanes, time eviction keeps the newest base at the window
start, byte cap sheds replay first and evicts logs only when that makes room
- disk-pressure probe counts one tick per store tick
- browser: onVisualReset restarts the recorder with backoff; replay checkout cadence follows
  the window (clamp(window/2, 5s, 60s))

Export trim and clamp follow with the streaming export.

Approved design for the streaming export slices S0-S6; Q1-Q5 accepted as proposed.

Bundle.body is now Uint8Array | BundleBody. The upload pipeline reads it through asBody
(an unreadable body is an ordinary upload failure; Content-Length is the bytes sent) and
serializeBundle frames only in-memory bodies. assembleBundle returns BufferedBundle so
existing callers still see raw bytes. No behaviour change for existing bundles.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
assembleBundleStream builds the same bundle as assembleBundle (member for member, byte for
byte after unzip) from an async stream of entries through a fflate streaming zip, so the
window is never held as parsed objects + JSON + a one-shot archive. Shared request/manifest/
crash/attachment/shape helpers now live in bundle-assembler and serve both assemblers.
CaptureExporter.stream() always releases its snapshot (also when abandoned unread), and the
assembler closes its source on any failure. Not wired into the client yet.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
CaptureSnapshot.timeRange() from the chunk store (window ending now, clipped to the store epoch), exposed on the exporter stream; the streaming assembler takes manifest time.start from it and drops rolling non-encoder records older than it.

FileStreamEncoder contract in core, streamEncoders in the streaming assembler (lazy member, write errors skip the record, zip errors fail the bundle), and createReplayStreamEncoder in @bugsee/replay: streaming gzip, drops events before the first Meta+FullSnapshot pair, clamps pre-window events to the plan start, writes nothing without a base.

…sports (streaming export S5a)

BundleBody.ready/dispose ownership in the upload pipeline, HttpTransport.acceptsBundleBody (node pipe, fetch Blob; others get bytes), memory/Blob/node temp-file sinks with a bounded, ordered write queue that aborts cleanly, withTransportHeaders keeping the flag across the launchers' internal tagging.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…s (streaming export S5b)

BundleStore.putFrame (node: temp file + fsync + rename), retainBody shared between staging and the upload, a staging that lands after the upload settled frees its own blob, flush waits for streamed staging; stores without putFrame get the materialized frame through put.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…g export S5c)

client.ts assembles through assembleBundleStream over the exporter stream; the report dialog freezes its capture with its window; an export failure falls back to a memory build so the report still ships; node builds the zip into the instance export dir (file sink, stale sweep, incremental node:crypto digest) and browser registers the streaming replay encoder; the chunk store epoch follows early-stamped records so the window trim never drops in-window data.

🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)
…h IndexedDB) after measuring the streaming export (streaming export S6)

Measured on the real paths: the export's live-heap cost on a 20 MB window drops from +36 MB (memory store) / +20 MB (file store) to ~+4 MB / ~0. Browser maxDataSize defaults to 20 MB, 30 MB when the IndexedDB capture store holds the window, explicit value wins; node 50 MB and edge/worker 10 MB unchanged. Design doc section 9, PROGRESS.md closed out.

Review of PR #173: streaming report export and BGSVIEWER-12 replay window fix

Overall risk: Medium. The change is large (about 6.5k lines) and touches the report hot path and durable staging. I found no P0, P1 or P2 defects. I did not run the test suite, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan. I read the code and traced callers.

Merge recommendation: Approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job. The two P3 items I posted inline are small and can be fixed in this PR or after it.

Findings (posted inline)

Sev Location Summary
P3 packages/core/src/bundle-stream-assembler.ts:219-226 The new entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops records stamped at their start time but captured at finish. performance transactions are the example (packages/performance/src/capture-provider.ts:37). A transaction that began before the window and ended inside it is lost from performance.json, and the buffered assembler (still used by recovery) keeps it.
P3 packages/core/src/client.ts:727 arrayCapture is documented as "re-iterable" but is single-pass. This is not a live bug today, because assemble runs once per request. A second assembly of the same request would silently produce a bundle with no rolling data.

Things I checked that hold up

  • Shared body ownership. retainBody(…, 2) is released by both the staging claim and the upload claim. Queue overflow and refusedForCapacity leave the blob staged, and the pump re-reads it from the store. I found no double-dispose or early-delete path.
  • Upload settling during staging. settledWhileStaging handles an upload that settles while its staging write is still in flight. The late blob is removed on landing, so a delivered report is not re-uploaded at the next launch.
  • Atomic publish. putFrame writes to a .tmp sibling, fsyncs, then renames. list() filters on the .bundle suffix, so a partial write is invisible to recovery.
  • Sink failure handling. A failing sink is isolated by assembleWithFallback, which retries in memory. The write queue serialises writes and applies backpressure, and the partial artifact is aborted after in-flight writes settle.
  • chunk-capture-store byte cap. The shedding loop always evicts at least one part, so it cannot spin. The soft-cap break avoids evicting in-window logs for no gain. onVisualReset is deferred to a microtask so the recorder's synchronous restart cannot re-enter the store, and the browser launch rate-limits and backs it off.
  • withTransportHeaders. It preserves the acceptsBundleBody flag, so the internalTagged wrapper does not silently turn streamed uploads back into whole-bundle reads.

Notes (not defects)

  • Blob sink is not wired. createBlobSink and isBlobBundleBody are exported and tested, but the browser launch never passes a bundleSink. Browser reports therefore use the memory sink. The peek() call in client.ts joins the chunks into one array, so the "+4 MB" heap figure applies to that memory path. Nothing is wrong, but the PR description reads as if the Blob path ships.
  • Unverified paths. These match your listed residuals. Capture recovery and native-crash recovery still use the buffered assembler. The viewer's handling of the new member order (manifest.json is now last) is unverified. The IndexedDB read path was not measured. Please confirm in CI that the streamed upload (pipeBody with drain/close handling and createReadStream) behaves on real Bun and Deno. The e2e job covers those runtimes and is outside pnpm test.
  • VISUAL_TYPES includes 'video'. Video entries reach the rolling store only if something writes them there, and today they are report-time snapshots only. If they ever enter the store without anchors, shedVisual would drop the whole lane at once instead of the oldest part.

Positives

  • The design doc, the baseline measurements and the slice-by-slice commits are easy to follow.
  • Failure paths are handled deliberately: source close on error, sink abort ordering, fallback to a small in-memory report, and body disposal in the trigger-pipeline catch.
  • Test coverage is broad, including an equivalence test between the buffered and streaming assemblers.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Reports can be assembled and uploaded as streams, reducing the need to hold entire archives in memory. Node deployments with an instance directory use temporary disk-backed exports that are cleaned up after use.
    • Replay capture can restart after visual data is evicted, while preserving a usable replay base when possible. Electron replay captures are separated by window.
    • Electron can capture video per display, combining visible window layers into separate display recordings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Replay exports respect the capture window and handle missing or outdated replay bases more reliably.
    • IndexedDB snapshots are read incrementally, with improved cleanup and recovery for interrupted or failed exports.
  • Documentation
    • Updated capture-size defaults: browsers use 20 MB in memory or 30 MB with durable storage; Node/Electron use 50 MB and edge/worker runtimes use 10 MB.

The change adds streamed bundle assembly, restartable bundle bodies, platform-specific sinks, streamed upload, and recovery support. Capture records gain anchor and lane metadata, with lane-aware retention and replay resets. Replay export can produce separate streams per lane. Electron adds per-display video capture. Browser defaults change to 20 MB for in-memory storage and 30 MB for IndexedDB storage.

Severity: P3 Low

Problem: The window filter drops a rolling record when entry.timestamp < plan.start. For records stamped at their start time but captured when they finish, that removes spans that began before the window and ended inside it. Before this PR, eviction was by part arrival time, so those records were kept.

Scenario: packages/performance/src/capture-provider.ts:37 captures performance transactions with transaction.startTimestampMs, and they are emitted at finish. With the default 60 s window, a transaction that started 75 s ago and finishes now has timestamp < plan.start. It is skipped, and performance.json can lose the span that is the most relevant one to the report.

Impact: A long-running transaction silently disappears from the report. The buffered assembler (used by recovery) still includes it, so the two paths now disagree.

Fix: Either exempt types whose timestamp is not the arrival time (performance) from the < plan.start skip, or document that the window is applied to the record's own timestamp and add a test pinning that choice for performance.

Severity: P3 Low

Problem: The doc says "re-iterable", but arrayCapture wraps a single async generator (iterator) and returns the same stream object from [Symbol.asyncIterator], so it is single-pass. The old frozenCaptures value was a Map, which could be read any number of times.

Scenario: Today assemble runs once per request, so this is not a live bug. If a request is ever assembled twice (a retried or re-driven trigger), the second pass reads an exhausted frozen capture and produces a bundle with no rolling data. Nothing reports that.

Fix: Correct the comment to "single-pass". Optionally make arrayCapture hand out a fresh generator per [Symbol.asyncIterator]() call, which is cheap for an in-memory array and restores the old re-readability.

…port follow-up)

capture-recovery and native-crash-recovery read a prior generation's snapshot through streamReified into assembleBundleStream (one snapshot per incident/dump) instead of draining the whole generation into parsed entries. The capture exporter's stream shares the same helper. A pipeline that throws gets the body disposed.

…ir replay when its store sheds every base

The Electron main owns the byte-capped store the renderers stream into, but its onVisualReset had nobody to tell, so a shed base was only restored by the next periodic checkout. New control command `checkout` (main -> renderer): node launch gains onVisualReset, launchMain gates it with the shared createVisualResetGate (extracted from the browser launch, same backoff) and broadcasts checkout, the renderer restarts its recorder through the browser launch's new onReplayRestart hook.

Re-review after the latest pushes (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path and durable staging. My earlier findings are not repeated here. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, because I only read the code. CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commits since the last review

I read 1b94667d, b80910c7 and 25bf4700, tracing their callers. I found no new defects at any severity.

1b94667d — recovery paths stream their rebuilt bundles (recovered-bundle.ts, capture-recovery.ts, native-crash-recovery.ts, capture-drain.ts)

  • Each marker or dump now gets its own backend.snapshot(frozen), and streamReified releases it exactly once on completion, return() or throw(). I found no leak or double release.
  • A torn record is skipped and reported through onError. This keeps the old tolerance for a crash's torn trailing frame.
  • enqueueOwningBody disposes the body only when enqueue throws. A pipeline that returns a result, including a capacity refusal, keeps ownership. This matches the ownership rules I checked earlier.
  • Recovery snapshots carry no time range, so the assembler runs without a plan. The only tracing I did into recovery code was the rolling-window filter, so I did not check beyond it. Behaviour matches the old buffered recovery: no window filter and no replay clamp. That also means the recovery path no longer disagrees with the live path on the timestamp filter from my earlier P3, because recovery never applies it.
  • The "Known residuals" line in the PR description is now out of date for recovery. Please update it to say that only the viewer unzip check and the IndexedDB read path remain.

25bf4700 — the Electron checkout command and the shared createVisualResetGate

  • The gate logic is the browser logic moved unchanged. The browser launch still passes ready so a reset before the recorder exists spends no backoff budget.
  • launchMain does not pass ready. A reset before control.start() would spend one backoff step without restarting anything. I could not find a way to reach that, because a reset needs replay data that only arrives from renderers after they register. I'm not reporting it as a finding. Passing ready: () => checkoutRenderers !== undefined would make it match the browser launch.
  • checkoutRenderers is cleared in the wrapped stop, and the renderer's onCheckout checks live(). A late reset after stop is a no-op.
  • launchMain does not pass its own captureStore, so the new node onVisualReset option reaches the file or memory store.

b80910c7 only changes a test guard.

Earlier findings

Both earlier P3 findings are still present in the current code, and nothing in the new commits touches them:

  • bundle-stream-assembler.ts:226: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and finished inside it.
  • client.ts:727: the arrayCapture comment says "re-iterable", but the stream is single-pass.

Merge recommendation

Approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job for the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. The two P3 items can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Decide how the window filter should treat performance records, and pin that with a test.
  2. Fix the "re-iterable" comment, or make arrayCapture hand out a fresh generator per call.
  3. Confirm the viewer unzips the new member order, with manifest.json last. The IndexedDB read path is still unmeasured.

Positives

  • The recovery refactor reuses one streaming read helper (streamReified) in three places, so the exporter and both recovery paths share the release rules.
  • Extracting the visual-reset gate removed a copy of the backoff logic instead of duplicating it for Electron.
  • New behaviour in these commits comes with tests, for example recovered-bundle.test.ts and visual-reset-gate.test.ts.

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path and durable staging. I only read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commit since the last review: fefa2d26

I found no new defects at any severity.

  • recovered-bundle.ts, capture-recovery.ts: assembleFromSnapshot takes an optional onTornRecord sink that defaults to context.onError. recoverReports now passes its own onError. This is the sink the old drain reported torn records to, so that behaviour is restored. The default argument keeps the other call site compatible.
  • native-crash-recovery.ts: it does not pass the new argument and relies on the default. Its context sets onError: base.onError ?? onError, so torn records reach options.onError whenever the base context has no sink of its own. The new test covers this: the bundle ships, the dump is claimed, and onError is called once. If base.onError is set, the torn-record report goes there instead. That is consistent with how every other failure in that leg is routed, so I'm not reporting it.
  • launch-main.ts: ready: () => (mainControl?.rendererCount ?? 0) > 0 addresses my earlier note, so a reset with no renderer registered spends no backoff budget. mainControl is assigned after control.start() and cleared in the wrapped stop, so a reset after stop is a no-op. The new test in launch-main.test.ts covers the gate.
  • docs/design/streaming-export.md: the S5/S6 rows now record that recovery streams too. The PR description's "Known residuals" still says capture and native-crash recovery use the buffered assembler. Please update it. Only the viewer unzip check and the IndexedDB read path remain.

Earlier findings (still present, not repeated inline)

Neither commit touches them. Both are P3.

  1. packages/core/src/bundle-stream-assembler.ts:226: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and finished inside it. Recovery never applies this filter, so the two paths still differ.
  2. packages/core/src/client.ts:727: the arrayCapture comment says "re-iterable", but the stream is single-pass.

Merge recommendation

Approve once CI is green. That includes the real-runtime e2e job, which covers the streamed upload (pipeBody, createReadStream) on Bun and Deno. The two P3 items can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Decide how the window filter treats performance records, and pin that with a test.
  2. Fix the "re-iterable" comment, or make arrayCapture return a fresh generator on each call.
  3. Confirm the viewer unzips the new member order (manifest.json last), and update the "Known residuals" line in the PR description.

Positives

  • The review-round fix comes with a regression test for each of its two changes.
  • Torn-record reporting is now explicit, and the recovery paths share one helper (assembleFromSnapshot).

Sync the containing directory after the rename in putFrame.

putFrame syncs the file, then renames it, but never syncs the directory. fsync on the file does not persist the new directory entry. putFrame resolves after the rename, and the staged result is then marked retained, so the report marker is removed. After a power loss, the renamed file can be absent. The sweep in recoverReports then frees the incident's capture generation, and no recoverable copy of the incident remains.

The same gap exists in writeFileAtomic, which put uses. That gap predates this change. The fix below covers the new putFrame path. Directory sync is POSIX-specific, so the fix skips it on Windows.

Suggested fix

Add a launch-level test that checks the body the transport receives when it declares acceptsBundleBody.

The streamed-export tests in packages/node/src/launch.test.ts pass recordingTransport(). That fake does not declare acceptsBundleBody. The bundle uploader therefore always takes the materialized path. If launch stops forwarding the flag, these tests still pass, because the transport receives the same bytes either way.

Add a launch-level test with a transport that declares acceptsBundleBody as the literal true. Record only the body sent to the bundle PUT URL, and assert that it is a BundleBody and not a Uint8Array. With correct forwarding, the uploader passes the BundleBody. If the flag is dropped, the uploader passes the result of bytes(), and the assertion fails.

This check covers the flag at the launch boundary. It does not count bytes() calls, so an earlier bytes() call elsewhere in the pipeline would not fail it.

the bundle PUT URL, and verifies it is a BundleBody rather than a Uint8Array.
Exercise the transport through launchCore so the test detects whether launch
forwards the flag.

Update the status line to match the shipped slices.

The status says nothing is implemented. Section 5 marks S0–S6 as done, and docs/PROGRESS.md records the export as shipped. A reader can take the export for a future proposal. Replace that sentence with the current status.

Bound the body conversion with the request timeout.

The await body.bytes() runs inside the timed try, but controller.abort() cannot settle it. A custom bundleSink body whose bytes() never resolves leaves the upload pending past timeoutMs. An unbounded stop() or flush() then waits on it too. Race the conversion against the abort signal so the timeout rejects the request.

Keep the Blob marker when retainBody wraps a Blob body.

retainBody returns an object without the blob key, so isBlobBundleBody rejects it. On the durable upload path, a Blob body is always retained because its peek() returns undefined. The fetch transport then calls bytes() on the wrapper. This reads the whole ZIP into memory instead of sending the Blob. The path requires a non-memory bundleSink on createClient together with a durable upload pipeline. The non-durable upload path passes the Blob body unchanged, and the shipped browser launch does not set a bundleSink.

Buffered encoder types skip the window trim.

For a rolling type with a fileEncoders entry, the pre-window drop is skipped (packages/core/src/bundle-stream-assembler.ts:219-226). The buffered path stores only entry.data, with no timestamp check (:258). The encoder receives payloads only (packages/core/src/bundle-assembler.ts:58-62), so it cannot apply plan.start. Its output is written without a window filter (:310-311). The manifest still reports time.start = plan.start (:319). The member can therefore hold records older than the manifest start. The design forbids this for non-replay types: "the configured window is the contract" (docs/design/streaming-export.md:121-122).

The rationale in the code comment needs correction. Payloads can carry timestamps; replay events do. The actual gap is that the buffered encoder receives no window bound. The exemption also assumes the encoder clamps its input. encodeReplay (packages/replay/src/encoder.ts) only gzips the payloads, so it does not clamp pre-window events to plan.start. If the replay type is rolling, its pre-window events keep their original timestamps, while the manifest starts at plan.start.

Do not limit the exemption to streamEncoders. Dropping pre-window records before the buffered replay encoder removes the Meta/FullSnapshot base that replay export needs. A correct change has to pass the window start to buffered encoders, so each encoder can clamp or trim its own input. That changes the fileEncoders contract and encodeReplay, so this review does not propose a localized diff.

Update the buffered `fileEncoders` contract to receive the rolling window start,
and update `encodeReplay` to use it when trimming or clamping encoded events.
Adjust the pre-window exemption so buffered encoders can preserve required
replay base events while ensuring their output does not include records earlier

Reject a:1 from renderers unless the payload is a FullSnapshot.

The decoder honors a:1 for any entry type and payload. A renderer can post one replay entry with that flag. Main then makes it the eviction cut point for the shared visual lane. An older genuine base is evicted. If no later genuine Meta+FullSnapshot pair remains, the replay export is lost. The fix is to set anchor only when t is replay and the payload event has type 2.

Skip the export sweep when a live writer owns the instance root.

launch() calls sweepStaleExports on the instance export directory on every launch. The sweep removes files by modification time only. A second launch with a pinned instanceIdentity shares that directory with a live launch. If an export upload has not written for more than one hour, the sweep can delete its file. A retry of that upload then fails, because body.stream() reopens the path. Keep the sweep for crash leftovers, but do not run it while another launch is live in the same root. Also check the file's owner before removing it.

…the streaming export no longer holds the whole window (measured)

snapshot().stream() read every part into one array before yielding its first record, so exporting from IndexedDB kept the
decoded window in the heap. Measured in headless Chromium on a 20 MB window: buffered +77 MB, streaming with the old read
+33 MB, part-by-part +21 MB (store side alone +1.7 MB). drainAll shares the same generator.

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path and durable staging. I only read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commit since the last review: dc5de121

This commit makes the IndexedDB snapshot read part by part (readParts in packages/browser-utils/src/idb-chunk-backend.ts:536). I found no new defects.

  • Release and cancel: release() still resolves cancelled. until(...) then ends the generator, and the pins and the held in-memory maps are dropped immediately.
  • Truncation on cancel: a cancel after the first part now returns the earlier parts and then ends. The old code returned []. The only caller that cancels is one that has abandoned the read, so I am not reporting this.
  • Mid-stream failure: a failed or timed-out later part now throws after earlier parts were already written into the zip. assembleBundleStream closes the source and aborts the sink. The client's memory-build fallback then runs. The "Known" note in the design doc covers this.
  • drainAll: it consumes the same generator, so the buffered and streaming paths cannot disagree.
  • New tests: I only read the diff stat for idb-chunk-backend.test.ts (+84 lines). I did not open the tests.

Follow-up on CodeRabbit's latest findings

I did not repeat these as inline comments. Here is what I checked in the current code.

  • retainBody drops the Blob marker (bundle-body.ts:84-101). Confirmed. The wrapper copies size, stream, bytes, peek, dispose and ready, but not blob. That makes isBlobBundleBody false. Today this is latent, because the browser launch passes no bundleSink, so no Blob body exists. If a Blob sink is wired in with durable staging, the fetch transport would call bytes() and load the whole zip into the heap. P3. Fix it together with wiring the Blob sink.
  • Directory fsync after rename in putFrame (node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43). Real but not a regression. writeFileAtomic (fs-storage.ts:68-83) does the same: it fsyncs the file and renames, but never syncs the directory. A power loss between the rename and the directory flush can lose the staged frame. Fix both together or leave both. P3.
  • Fetch transport bytes() not bounded by the timeout (fetch-transport.ts:43). Narrow. Memory bodies resolve at once and Blob bodies skip bytes(). Only a custom body with a never-settling bytes() is affected. P3, optional.
  • Electron a:1 accepted for any entry (electron/src/protocol.ts:139). Accurate, with limited impact. chunk-capture-store.ts:256 marks the part as anchored for whatever type arrived. The visual lane then treats that part as a base (shedVisual, evictByTime). A compromised renderer could therefore evict a genuine older base. That renderer already controls its own replay content, so this is not an escalation, but validating the type-2 FullSnapshot payload is cheap. P3.
  • docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet", while section 5 marks S0–S6 done. Please fix the status line.
  • Launch-level test for acceptsBundleBody (nitpick). It is a reasonable guard against dropping the flag at the launch boundary.

Earlier findings (still present, nothing in the new commit touches them)

  1. packages/core/src/bundle-stream-assembler.ts:226: performance transactions that started before the window and ended inside it are dropped by the plan.start filter, while recovery keeps them.
  2. packages/core/src/client.ts:727: the comment says "re-iterable", but the stream is single-pass.
  3. The "Known residuals" line in the PR description is out of date. Recovery now streams, and the IndexedDB read path is now measured, in section 9 of the design doc. Only the viewer unzip check remains.

Merge recommendation

Approve once CI is green. That includes the real-runtime e2e job for the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. All open items are P3 and can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Decide how the window filter treats performance records, and pin that with a test.
  2. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before the Blob sink is wired in.
  3. Confirm the viewer unzips the new member order (manifest.json last).
  4. Update the stale design-doc status line and the PR description.

Positives

  • The IndexedDB change is small, keeps drainAll and stream on one generator, and comes with a measurement: +77 MB buffered, +33 MB streaming with the old read, +21 MB with the part-by-part read.
  • The design doc records what was and was not measured, including that the remaining +21 MB is not bisected.

Add content assertions to the multi-marker streaming test.

The changed test at packages/core/src/capture-recovery.test.ts:279-288 checks only that two bundles are enqueued and two snapshots are taken. It does not check the records in either bundle. The per-marker path at packages/core/src/capture-recovery.ts:178-205 now builds each bundle from its own snapshot. A regression that empties the second bundle would still pass this test. Add a logsOf check for each entry in pipe.bundles, for example expect(pipe.bundles.map((b) => logsOf(b as Bundle))).toEqual([[{ m: 'x' }], [{ m: 'x' }]]);.

Minor follow-up Read each generation once for all of its pending markers.

188-188: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

Read each generation once for all of its pending markers.

Recovery takes a new snapshot of the whole generation for every marker. The base drained the generation once and reused it. Startup I/O now scales with the number of pending incidents in one generation. Restore a single read per generation, or document the extra reads as an accepted trade-off.

Minor follow-up Read the crashed generation once per session, not once per dump.

107-108: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Read the crashed generation once per session, not once per dump.

native-crash-recovery.ts calls backend.snapshot(frozen) inside the for (const dump of dumps) loop at line 132. snapshot() eagerly reads and parses every file of each frozen part on each call. A session with several .dmp files therefore reads the crashed generation once per dump. The base read it once before the loop. Take the snapshot once before the loop and reuse the drained records for each dump, or bound how many dumps one session recovers. If the per-dump snapshot is kept on purpose to avoid holding the capture in memory, document that trade-off and cap the dump count.

Nitpick Assert the release of each snapshot, not only the total count.

210-216: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert the release of each snapshot, not only the total count.

expect(releases.count).toBe(2) also passes when one snapshot is released twice and the other is never released. The fake's release() increments one shared counter on every call, so the count does not show which snapshot was released. The comment above the block says each snapshot is released, but the assertion does not check that.

The current code releases each snapshot once, so this is a coverage gap rather than a current leak. A future change that double-releases one snapshot and skips the other would still pass. A snapshot that is never released keeps its parts pinned, which defers deletion of evicted data.

Assert the existing per-snapshot released flag for both generation 7 snapshots. Keep the call-count and ref checks.

Nitpick Add a test for return() while a next() is pending.

144-149: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a test for return() while a next() is pending.

The streamReified tests call return() and throw() only on streams that were never read. Add a case that leaves a read pending, calls return(), and then resolves the read. The case asserts that the snapshot is released once. The current implementation passes this case, so the test guards against a future regression in the cleanup path. It does not fix a present defect.

Pass the recovery onError as the torn-record sink.

The native recovery call to assembleFromSnapshot omits the fifth onTornRecord argument. When a caller supplies context.onError, torn-record errors go to that callback instead of the recovery onError. The base revision sent them to the recovery onError in every case. Pass onError explicitly, as capture-recovery.ts does.

Records carry an optional out-of-band lane (a window). The chunk store keeps a visual lane per key: its own open part,

Problem: onVisualReset is put into storeOptions here, but createFileCaptureStore (packages/core/src/file-capture-store.ts:45-54) builds its ChunkCaptureStoreOptions from an explicit field list that has no onVisualReset, and FileCaptureStoreOptions has no such field either. The callback is dropped on the file-backed path. The in-memory store and the IndexedDB store do forward it (idb-chunk-backend.ts:740).

Impact: File-backed is the default for Node and Electron main (dataDir). There, byte-cap shedding in chunk-capture-store.ts shedVisual never calls the host. For Electron main this means the per-window checkout never goes out. The replay lane has no base until the renderer's next periodic checkout, up to ~30 s by default, and a report taken in that gap has no replay. This is the BGSVIEWER-12 "replay without a base" case the feature exists to close, and the new Electron gate and checkout path is dead code on the default store.

Scenario: launchMain(token, { ipcMain }) with the default dataDir store. A large replay window hits maxDataSizeBytes, shedVisual evicts the lane's only base, and reset is undefined inside the chunk store, so nothing is called. The existing test launch.data-size.test.ts:131-138 only asserts that createFileCaptureStore was called with onVisualReset, so it passes while the option is discarded one layer down.

Fix: Add onVisualReset?: (lane?: string) => void to FileCaptureStoreOptions and forward it in storeOptions: ...(options?.onVisualReset !== undefined ? { onVisualReset: options.onVisualReset } : {}). Test it through the real createFileCaptureStore rather than a spy: shed the last base and assert the callback fires. This matches CodeRabbit's open Major finding, which I have now checked in the current code.

Recovered multi-window replay merges all windows into one unattributed member.

When chunk storage is configured, the recovery scan runs at launch. The recovery context at packages/node/src/launch.ts:1234 supplies no replay encoder. Both recoverNativeCrashes and recoverReports pass this context to assembleFromSnapshot. Without an encoder, bundle-stream-assembler.ts keys replay by its bare type and writes no window attribute. The per-window lanes frozen into recovered parts are merged into one replay member.

docs/design/per-window-replay.md requires that a crashed multi-window session rebuilds one replay per window. This recovery path does not do that.

A fix must make a replay encoder available on this path. Forwarding the existing context fields does not add an encoder, and the Node launch options do not currently accept one.

Make a replay encoder available in the recovery context created in launch, which
is passed to recoverNativeCrashes and recoverReports and used by
assembleFromSnapshot; without it, replay lanes from different windows merge into
one unattributed replay. Add or reuse an encoder source appropriate to the Node
launch path so recovered multi-window sessions retain one replay per window.

Apply the frozen part lane in the memory backend's snapshot().

createMemoryChunkBackend().snapshot() returns stored records without the lane of their frozen part. The file and IDB backends attach that lane. The new test checks only listParts, so a snapshot that drops the lane still passes. Add a snapshot assertion for an unlaned record in a laned part, and stamp the frozen lane in snapshot().

Remove unused lane names from retired in retireLane.

retireLane adds the name even when the lane has no parts. Only the tick loop removes names, and it visits only lanes that still have parts. Each closed renderer therefore leaves an entry until a later record for that lane or clear() runs. Add the name only when the lane has a visual part.

Copy lane in the aggregator route.

route() builds the stored record without CaptureDataEntry.lane. Visual records from callers of createCaptureAggregator therefore land in the unkeyed visual lane. They share retention and reset with that lane and export as one member. Copy entry.lane into store.add.

Make the deferred-lane test reach the retry path and assert that part's lane.

The after record opens its own lane-b part through tick(). The assertion lanes.filter((l) => l === 'b').length > 0 passes on that part alone. The deferred late part receives no later write, so the retry in ensureOpened never runs for it. A change that drops the lane in that retry path leaves this test passing.

Rewrite the test so the deferred part receives a durable write after pressure recovers. Then assert the lane of that specific part. Update the test comment so it describes the flow the test exercises.

Assert the retained frame timestamps in the maxFrames test.

The test named keeps at most maxFrames per display (drop-oldest) checks only the encoded byte length. If eviction used pop() instead of shift(), the length would stay at 7 and the test would still pass. Keep the length check and add an assertion on the retained timestamps.

Cover a tick after clear() while the grab is still pending.

The in-flight clear() test releases the grab before it checks the snapshot. No tick runs while the grab is unresolved after clear(). clear() does not reset busy, busySince, or token. A tick that starts in this state returns early until stuckMs elapses. The existing stuckMs test covers that bound only when clear() is not called.

Add a test that calls clear() while the grab stays unresolved, ticks again, and asserts when the next capture starts. Assert the documented stuckMs boundary for this path. Do not assert immediate resumption, because the documented contract does not require it.

Add a bundle-level test for per-window replay in native crash recovery.

The windows of the crashed session test asserts only the lanes of the FrozenPart values passed to snapshot. The default fake backend emits no records, so no replay member is written and no window attribute is checked. A change that merges all replay into one member would still pass this test.

Update the test as follows:

  • Seed replay records on two lanes, for example w1 and w2, in the fake backend.
  • Pass a replay encoder in the recovery context, for example context: () => ({ ...baseContext(), streamEncoders: { replay: encoder } }). The assembler splits replay by lane only when an encoder exists for that type. The capture-recovery multi-window test uses the same context shape.
  • Unzip the bundle body. Assert the contents of replay.bin and replay.1.bin, and assert that each manifest replay entry has the matching window attribute.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The new retirement callback obtains sender.id only after the sender has gone; the code itself notes that reading a destroyed webContents ID can throw. In that case it never passes the lane ID to onRendererLeft.

Its replay lane may never be retired, leaving an old anchored part retained beyond the recording window.

This can occur when: A destroyed sender throws when its ID is read during forget, after it previously registered and recorded replay.

…play stream encoder so windows split (also in recovery); the file store forwards onVisualReset; display video review fixes

- launch() takes streamEncoders (live export and recovery context); launchMain supplies the replay encoder via the new @bugsee/replay/stream-encoder subpath (no rrweb in main)
- createFileCaptureStore forwards onVisualReset (it was dropped, so the per-window checkout never went out on the default store)
- file backend forgets an open part's lane on removePart/removeGeneration/unkeyed reopen
- electronDisplays: trace key-window rule and largest-overlap display
- display video: per-window capture bound, ring id refresh before the empty-layer return, expired frames trimmed, guarded onError, fps validation

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path, durable staging, the capture store's lane model and per-display video. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commit since my last review: 4839694e

This commit fixes my earlier P2s and most of the open P3s. It has one new problem, posted inline.

Sev Location Summary
P2 packages/node/src/launch.ts:512 The new streamEncoders launch option is not classified for relaunch(). It is in neither RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS (core/src/carrier.ts, beside fileEncoders) nor RESET_OPTIONS. The "classifies EVERY launch option" test in packages/bugsee should fail, and a relaunch in Electron main would drop the encoder. Fix: add 'streamEncoders' to RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS.

Earlier findings fixed by this commit

  • P2, Electron main and recovery had no replay stream encoder. launch() now takes streamEncoders and forwards it to the live export and the recovery context. launchMain supplies createReplayStreamEncoder() from the new @bugsee/replay/stream-encoder subpath, which imports only fflate and core types. A caller's own encoder wins. Only a test through the real receiver, store and assembler would prove it end to end. main-replay-lanes.integration.test.ts is that test; I read the diff stat and did not open it.
  • P2, createFileCaptureStore dropped onVisualReset. The option is now declared and forwarded.
  • Display video (CodeRabbit's open Major and Minor items):
    • A per-window capture timeout (layerTimeoutMs) is added. Promise.race keeps the losing capture() from becoming an unhandled rejection.
    • The ring id is refreshed before the empty-layer return.
    • Expired frames are trimmed per ring.
    • onError is guarded with reportGuarded.
    • fps is validated.
    • electronDisplays now follows the trace's key-window rule and picks the display with the largest overlap.
  • File backend lane cleanup. removePart, removeGeneration and an unkeyed reopen now clear the open lane.

Earlier findings still present

Nothing in the latest commit touches these. All are P3 unless noted.

  1. bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and ended inside it. Recovery keeps them.
  2. client.ts:727: the arrayCapture comment says "re-iterable", but the stream is single-pass. I did not re-read client.ts this round.
  3. bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker. This is latent, because no Blob sink is wired in.
  4. node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43: no directory fsync after rename in putFrame. writeFileAtomic has the same gap, so this is not a regression.
  5. chunk-capture-store.ts:333-335: retireLane adds to retired even when the lane has no parts, so the set grows slowly.
  6. chunk-capture-store.ts tick() does not re-run enforceByteCap(). An empty-string lane is not normalised before keying. The onVisualReset callback's rejected promise is not handled, in the store or in the Electron wrapper.
  7. electron/src/protocol.ts:139: a:1 is accepted for any entry type.
  8. browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:43: body.bytes() is not bounded by the timeout. This only matters for a custom body that never settles.
  9. node-utils/src/file-bundle-sink.ts:96-104: the stale-export sweep can remove a live sibling's export when instanceIdentity is pinned and the directory is shared.
  10. Docs: docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet", while section 5 marks S0–S6 done. The PR description's "Known residuals" is stale. Recovery now streams and the IndexedDB read path is measured, so only the viewer unzip of the new member order and the viewer's single-replay reading remain.

Merge recommendation

Fix the P2 and re-run relaunch-options.test.ts. Then approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job for the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. The rest are P3 and can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Classify streamEncoders as kept (new P2).
  2. Decide how the window filter treats performance records and pin it with a test.
  3. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. Refresh the stale design-doc status line and the PR description.
  5. Fix the retired set leak and the unhandled-rejection path in onVisualReset.

Positives

  • The commit answers the previous round point by point, and each fix comes with a test. These include a recovery-encoder test, a two-window integration test and hung-capture tests.
  • The @bugsee/replay/stream-encoder subpath keeps rrweb out of the Electron main process.
  • The hung-capture fix cleans up its timers and drops late results.

Its first case, "classifies EVERY launch option of EVERY platform as kept or reset", fails on any unclassified key. This commit does not touch either list.

Impact: This should fail @bugsee/bugsee tests in CI. I did not run it, but the mechanism is in the code: the key set comes from the interface, and the check is !KEPT.includes(key) && !RESET.includes(key). There is also a behavioural side. If the key is classified as reset, a relaunch() in an Electron main re-runs the node launch without launchMain's encoder, and the relaunched client goes back to writing all windows' replay into one merged member. That is the bug this commit fixes.

Scenario: Run pnpm --filter @bugsee/bugsee exec vitest run src/relaunch-options.test.ts. It reports streamEncoders as unclassified.

Fix: Add 'streamEncoders' to RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS next to 'fileEncoders'. The encoder is a stateless factory (begin() returns a new session per export), so keeping it is safe. Run that test before pushing, since it is outside the packages this commit's tests covered.

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commit since my last review: f9e851fd

It adds 'streamEncoders' to RESET_OPTIONS in packages/bugsee/src/relaunch-options.test.ts. That makes the "classifies EVERY launch option" test pass, but I think the classification is wrong. One inline comment posted.

Sev Location Summary
P2 packages/bugsee/src/relaunch-options.test.ts:153 streamEncoders is classified as reset on the claim that "a relaunch's host re-passes it". relaunch() calls the node launch, not launchMain, so nothing re-passes it. After a relaunch in Electron main, replay is written as one merged member again, in both live export and recovery. fileEncoders is kept for the same reason. Fix: move it to RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS (packages/core/src/carrier.ts).

Earlier findings fixed by 4839694e (checked in the current code)

  • file-chunk-backend.ts: removeGeneration now clears openLanes.
  • display-video.ts: the key display follows the trace's key-window rule and the largest overlap.
  • video-capture.ts: per-layer timeout, ring id refresh before the empty-layer return, per-ring frame trimming, a guarded error sink, and fps validation.

Earlier findings still present

None of these were touched by the latest commits. All are P3.

  1. bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and finished inside it. Recovery does not apply the filter.
  2. bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker. This is latent until a Blob sink is wired in.
  3. node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43: no directory fsync after rename in putFrame. writeFileAtomic has the same gap, so this is not a regression.
  4. chunk-capture-store.ts:
    • retireLane (line 334) adds to retired even when the lane has no parts, so the set grows slowly.
    • tick() does not re-run enforceByteCap().
    • An empty-string lane is not normalised before keying.
    • A silent lane keeps its last base in evictByTime.
  5. browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:43: body.bytes() is not bounded by the timeout. This matters only for a custom body that never settles.
  6. electron/src/protocol.ts:139: a:1 is accepted for any entry type.
  7. node-utils/src/file-bundle-sink.ts:96-104: the stale-export sweep can remove a live sibling's export when instanceIdentity is pinned and the directory is shared.
  8. docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet", while section 5 marks S0–S6 done. The PR description's "Known residuals" is also stale: recovery now streams and the IndexedDB read path is measured. Only the viewer unzip of the new member order (manifest.json last) and the viewer's single-replay reading remain.
  9. I did not re-read client.ts:727 this round (the "re-iterable" comment on arrayCapture).

Merge recommendation

Fix the P2 (a one-line move between the two lists plus a relaunch test), then approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job for the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. The rest are P3 and can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Classify streamEncoders as kept, not reset.
  2. Decide how the window filter treats performance records and pin it with a test.
  3. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. Refresh the stale design-doc status line and the PR description.

Positives

  • The previous round's fixes each came with a regression test, and the per-window export now reaches Electron main and recovery.
  • The new relaunch-options guard did its job: it caught an unclassified option before merge.

Severity: P2 Medium

Problem: The test now passes, but the classification is wrong. streamEncoders is listed as reset ("a relaunch's host re-passes it"), and nothing re-passes it. relaunch() calls the platform launch (packages/node/src/launch.ts:1610: relaunchWith(launch, options, ...)), not launchMain. The Electron-specific wiring is not re-run. launch-main.ts:471-477 says the same: relaunch "is not Electron-aware". launchMain is where createReplayStreamEncoder() is injected (launch-main.ts:285). fileEncoders is in RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS (packages/core/src/carrier.ts:263) for this exact reason, and streamEncoders has the same shape.

Impact: After relaunch() in an Electron main, the new client has no replay stream encoder. Both the live export (launch.ts:1013) and the recovery context (launch.ts:1246) go back to writing every window's replay into one merged replay member. That is the BGSVIEWER-12 / per-window bug that 4839694 fixed.

Scenario: An Electron app with two windows calls relaunch() (for example after a settings change). The next report contains one interleaved replay.bin. A crash recovered after that relaunch is merged the same way.

Fix: Add 'streamEncoders' to RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS in packages/core/src/carrier.ts, next to 'fileEncoders', and remove it from RESET_OPTIONS here. The encoder is a stateless factory (begin() returns a new session per export), so keeping it is safe. This is the fix my previous review suggested. Add a relaunch test that checks the encoder is still in the carrier's kept options.

Minor follow-up Filter snapshot frames by the capture window.

Filter snapshot frames by the capture window.

snapshot(now) encodes every frame in each display ring. It does not check frame timestamps against the window. Frames older than maxFrames / fps remain in the report whenever the frame timer has not completed a tick since they expired. Apply the same cutoff used in tick before encoding in snapshot.

Update snapshot to filter each display ring’s frames using the same cutoff
calculation as tick before encoding, so frames older than the capture window are

Minor follow-up Reject fps values above 1000.

238-240: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject fps values above 1000.

For fps from about 667 upward, Math.round(1000 / fps) yields a 1 ms delay. Above 2000 it yields 0. Node runs both as 1 ms. The tick rate is therefore capped at about 1000 per second. The validation accepts any finite positive value, so a caller that requests 3000 fps receives about 1000 ticks per second. The encode call in snapshot and the rolling-window cutoff in tick still use the requested value. The encoded video can therefore declare a frame rate that the capture does not produce.

The elapsed-time gate does not address this. Above 1000 fps, the requested period is shorter than the 1 ms timer, so a gate never skips a tick.

Suggested fix
   if (!Number.isFinite(fps) || fps <= 0) {
     throw new RangeError(`fps must be a positive finite number, got ${fps}`);
   }
+  if (fps > 1000) {
+    throw new RangeError(`fps must be at most 1000, the rate the 1 ms timer can deliver, got ${fps}`);
+  }

Rates from about 667 to 1000 still round to a 1 ms delay and run at about 1000 per second. This bound does not correct those rates.

Re-review of PR #173 (labeled, no new commits)

Overall risk: Medium. I read code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck. CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

What changed since my last review

No new commits. HEAD is still f9e851fd, which I reviewed at 17:26. This run came from the label event, so I re-checked the open findings against the current code and read two paths I had not traced before. I found no new defects and posted no new inline comments.

Paths I traced for the first time this round:

  • pipeBody in node-utils/src/http-request.ts. It waits on drain or close and removes both listeners whichever one fires. If the request is destroyed it stops, and the for await exit closes the file's read stream. A stream error destroys the request and rejects through settleOnce, so it settles only once.
  • Window ids in Electron main. main-receiver.ts tags replay with String(event.sender.id). main-control.ts gives onRendererLeft and checkout(windowId) the same webContents id, so retireLane and the per-window gate in launch-main.ts refer to the same lane.

Still open

  1. P2: streamEncoders is classified as reset on relaunch (packages/bugsee/src/relaunch-options.test.ts:153). It is still not in RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS (packages/core/src/carrier.ts:263 lists only fileEncoders). relaunch() calls the node launch, not launchMain, so after a relaunch Electron main writes all windows' replay into one member again, in both the live export and recovery. Details are in my inline comment on that line.
  2. P3 items, unchanged:
    • bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and ended inside it.
    • bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker. This is latent because no Blob sink is wired in.
    • node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43: no directory fsync after rename. writeFileAtomic has the same gap.
    • chunk-capture-store.ts:333-335: retireLane adds to retired even when the lane has no parts.
    • fetch-transport.ts:43: bytes() is not bounded by the timeout.
    • electron/src/protocol.ts:139: a:1 is accepted for any entry type.
    • file-bundle-sink.ts:96-104: the export sweep can remove a live sibling's file when instanceIdentity is pinned.
  3. CodeRabbit follow-ups I have not re-raised:
    • snapshot() in createDisplayVideoSource does not apply the ring cutoff.
    • compose is not bounded by a timeout.
    • launch-recovery-encoders.test.ts leaves its temp directories behind.
  4. Docs:
    • docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet".
    • The PR description's "Known residuals" is out of date. Recovery now streams and the IndexedDB read path is measured. What remains is the viewer unzipping the new member order (manifest.json last) and the viewer reading only the first replay member.

Merge recommendation

Fix the P2 first: move 'streamEncoders' from RESET_OPTIONS to RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS and add a relaunch test. Then approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job that covers the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. The P3 items can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Keep streamEncoders across relaunch.
  2. Decide how the window filter treats performance records, and pin it with a test.
  3. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. Refresh the design-doc status line and the PR description.

Positives

  • The streamed upload handles backpressure and early close carefully, and cleans up its listeners.
  • Window identity comes from event.sender.id in main, never from renderer data, and the receiver, control channel and store agree on it.

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path, durable staging, the capture store's lane model and per-display video. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commit since my last review: 8861841d

This commit fixes the open P2. I posted one new P3 inline.

Sev Location Summary
P3 packages/electron/src/display-video.ts:60 The new keyWindowBounds argument is the right fix, but a host has no simple way to supply it. The tracker is created inside launchMain and is never exposed. video.source is built before launchMain runs, and @bugsee/electron/main does not export the tracker. The default electronDisplays(screen, BrowserWindow) call therefore still uses the polled lastFocused rule. A host that builds the tracker itself without onError resets the live tracker's reporter.

Fixed in this commit:

  • P2, streamEncoders reset on relaunch. It is now in RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS (core/src/carrier.ts:264) next to fileEncoders, and it is removed from RESET_OPTIONS. relaunch.test.ts pins both as kept. The encoder is a stateless factory, so keeping it is safe.
  • CodeRabbit: compose was not bounded. compose now goes through the shared bounded() helper with stuckMs. Promise.race attaches handlers to the timeout promise, so a canceller that does not cancel cannot cause an unhandled rejection. A tick abandoned at stuckMs still drops a late compose result through the token check. A test covers a hung compose on one display while the other display keeps recording.
  • CodeRabbit: temp dirs. launch-recovery-encoders.test.ts now removes its temp dirs.

Earlier findings still open

Nothing in this commit touches them. All are P3.

  1. bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and ended inside it. Recovery keeps them.
  2. client.ts:727: the comment still says "re-iterable", but arrayCapture is single-pass.
  3. bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker.
  6. fetch-transport.ts:43: body.bytes() is not bounded by the timeout. This only matters for a custom body that never settles.
  7. electron/src/protocol.ts:139: a:1 is accepted for any entry type.
  8. file-bundle-sink.ts:96-104: the export sweep can remove a live sibling's file when instanceIdentity is pinned and the directory is shared.
  9. video-capture.ts snapshot() does not apply the ring cutoff, so expired frames can ship if no tick ran since they expired (CodeRabbit).
  10. Docs:
    • docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet", while section 5 marks S0–S6 done.
    • The PR description's "Known residuals" is stale. Recovery now streams and the IndexedDB read path is measured. What remains is the viewer unzipping the new member order (manifest.json last) and the viewer reading only the first replay member.

Merge recommendation

Approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job for the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. No P0–P2 items remain open. The P3 items can be fixed here or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Decide how the window filter treats performance records, and pin that with a test.
  2. Make the key-window source reachable for a display video built by the host, or document how to supply it.
  3. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. Refresh the design-doc status line and the PR description.

Positives

  • The relaunch fix goes where the reviews pointed and is pinned at the core level, beside fileEncoders.
  • One bounded() helper now covers both the per-window capture and the compose, so the two timeouts share the same cancel and race handling.
  • The new electronDisplays tests cover the tracker answer, a non-rectangle answer and a throwing tracker.

Severity: P3 Low

Problem: The new keyWindowBounds argument is optional, and the public API gives a host no simple way to supply it. The tracker that knows the key window is created inside launchMain (launch-main.ts:361-369) and is never exposed. video.source is built by the host before launchMain runs, and launchMain does not inject the tracker into it. @bugsee/electron/main re-exports electronDisplays (main.ts:27) but not electronApplicationTrackerFor. A host would have to depend on @bugsee/trackers/electron directly. If it calls electronApplicationTrackerFor({ app }) with no onError, rebind (application-tracker.ts:210-211) replaces the live tracker's reporter with undefined.

Impact: A typical host writes electronDisplays(screen, BrowserWindow), as the docs and tests show. That host still gets the polled lastFocused rule that CodeRabbit flagged: a window that gains and loses focus between two video ticks is missed, so video lane 0 and displays trace id 0 can name different monitors. The fix is correct when the argument is given, but the default path is unchanged.

Scenario: A two-monitor Electron app with video: { source: createDisplayVideoSource({ displays: electronDisplays(screen, BrowserWindow), ... }) }. The user clicks a window on monitor B and then switches to another app within one tick (1 s at the default fps). The trace makes B id 0, but the video keeps A as id 0.

Fix: Pick one:

  • Let launchMain supply the key window. For example, accept a video.source factory that receives { keyWindowBounds }, or export a keyWindowBounds accessor bound to the launch's tracker.
  • Document that the argument needs electronApplicationTrackerFor({ app, BrowserWindow }, onError) with the same onError that is passed to launchMain.

A test through launchMain with a display video source would pin whichever option you choose.

… key window so display video and the displays trace agree

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path, durable staging, the capture store's lane model and per-display video. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and CI is still unchecked in the test plan.

New commit since my last review: 286172d9

launchMain now accepts a video.source factory and calls it with { keyWindowBounds }, which reads the launch's application tracker. VideoSourceEnv is exported from @bugsee/electron/main.

Earlier finding this commit fixes:

  • P3, display-video.ts:60. A host had no way to reach the tracker's key window. It now gets it through the factory, and the doc comment shows how to pass it to electronDisplays. keyWindowBounds() is guarded inside the tracker, and electronDisplays also wraps the call, so a throwing read cannot break a tick. The two new tests cover the cases with a tracker and without one.

One new finding, posted inline:

Sev Location Summary
P2 packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts:566 The factory runs unguarded after launchCore has registered the client. If it throws (for example createDisplayVideoSource rejecting fps: 0), launchMain exits before the receiver, control channel, render-process-gone, crashReporter and the wrapped stop/flush are set up. A retry returns early as a repeat launch, so renderer capture is silently lost for the life of the process. Before this commit, the source was built before launchMain, so the same error threw before anything launched.

Earlier findings still open

Nothing in this commit touches these. All are P3.

  1. bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and finished inside it. Recovery does not apply the filter.
  2. client.ts:727: the comment calls arrayCapture "re-iterable", but the stream is single-pass.
  3. bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker. This stays latent until a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43: putFrame does not fsync the directory after rename. writeFileAtomic has the same gap, so this is not a regression.

  10. Docs:
    • docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet".
    • The "Known residuals" section of the PR description is out of date. Recovery now streams, and the IndexedDB read path has been measured. Two items remain: the viewer unzipping the new member order (manifest.json last), and the viewer reading only the first replay member.

Merge recommendation

Fix the new P2 first: either guard the factory and report the error, or call it before launchCore. Add a test for a throwing factory. Then approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job that covers the streamed upload on Bun and Deno. The P3 items can be fixed in this PR or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Make a throwing video.source factory unable to leave launchMain half-wired.
  2. Decide how the window filter treats performance records, and pin that with a test.
  3. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. Refresh the design-doc status line and the PR description.

Positives

  • The factory gives video display 0 the same key-window source as the displays trace without exposing the tracker, and the host still needs no Electron dependency.
  • keyWindowBounds is safe even when no window tracker exists: it returns undefined, and a test pins that case.

Severity: P2 Medium

Problem: The host's video.source factory now runs after launchCore has returned and registered the client on the carrier, and nothing guards it. If it throws, the exception leaves launchMain halfway through the Electron wiring.

Impact: The node client is running and owns the carrier slot. Nothing after this line has run:

  • the main receiver (receiver.start(), so renderer capture never reaches main's store),
  • render-process-gone,
  • the control channel (no session handshake, no blackout forwarding, no checkout),
  • the crashReporter install,
  • the wrapped stop/flush.

A retry cannot repair this. A second launchMain sees repeat === true (getCarrierClient(...) !== undefined), launchCore returns the live client without internals, and launchMain returns at line 551. Until something calls stop(), every renderer's replay, logs and incidents are dropped silently. When stop() is eventually called, it is the unwrapped one, so the IPC listeners are not removed.

Before this commit, a host built the source before calling launchMain, so a construction error threw before anything was launched.

Scenario: The factory pattern the new doc comment recommends:

video: { source: (env) => createDisplayVideoSource({ displays: electronDisplays(screen, BrowserWindow, env.keyWindowBounds), fps: cfg.fps, … }) }

With cfg.fps === 0, createDisplayVideoSource throws RangeError (validation added in this PR). Any other throwing host code inside the factory has the same effect. The app catches the error from launchMain and carries on, and main never receives renderer data again for that process.

Fix: Call the factory inside a try/catch. On a throw, reportGuarded(nodeOptions.onError, error) and treat the launch as having no pixel video. Do not build the controller, and leave captureState inactive. The rest of the wiring then still runs. Another option is to call the factory before launchCore: appTracker already exists at that point, and keyWindowBounds reads it lazily. Then a throw fails before anything is launched. Pin it with a test where the factory throws and the receiver/control are still started (or nothing is launched at all).

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path, durable staging, the capture store's lane model and per-display video. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and the test plan still shows CI unchecked.

New commit since my last review: 9251a5c8

This commit fixes the P2 I raised at packages/electron/src/launch-main.ts:566. I found no new defects, so I posted no inline comments this round.

  • What changed: the video.source factory call is now inside a try/catch (launch-main.ts:565-575). A throw is passed to reportGuarded(nodeOptions.onError, …), no controller is built, and the rest of launchMain still runs: the receiver, render-process-gone, the control channel, the crash reporter, and the wrapped stop/flush. The client was already registered on the carrier, so continuing is the right choice. Failing at that point would have left the half-wired state a retry cannot repair.

  • Report time is safe. The reportSnapshots closure added earlier reads videoController?.snapshot(now) ?? [], so a launch with no video returns []. The new test checks this. The video file encoder is still registered, but nothing produces video entries, so it is never called.

  • capture trace in the failure case. captureState is still built and added to the producers, and TraceName.CAPTURE is still declared host-owned. CaptureStateProducer writes nothing until setVisualCapture(true) (capture-state-producer.ts:85), and that call never happens on this path. A failed factory therefore looks the same as a denied screen-recording permission: no capture trace is written, and renderers never write it either. That is consistent, so I am not reporting it.

  • The new test in launch-main.test.ts covers the important cases:

    • onError receives the original error.
    • The stream channel is registered.
    • The report snapshot is empty.
    • The wrapped stop removes the listener.

A mutation that removes the try/catch or skips the receiver would fail it.

Earlier findings still open

None of these were touched by the latest commit. All are P3.

  1. packages/core/src/bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and ended inside it. Recovery has no plan, so it keeps them.
  2. packages/core/src/bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker, so isBlobBundleBody is false for a retained Blob body. This is latent until a Blob sink is wired in.
  3. packages/node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43: putFrame does not fsync the directory after rename. writeFileAtomic has the same gap, so this is not a regression.
  4. packages/core/src/chunk-capture-store.ts:333-335: retireLane adds the lane to retired even when the lane has no parts, so the set grows by one short string per closed window that never recorded replay.
  5. packages/browser-utils/src/fetch-transport.ts:43: body.bytes() is not bounded by the request timeout. This only matters for a custom body that never settles.
  6. packages/electron/src/protocol.ts:139: a:1 is accepted for any entry type.
  7. packages/node-utils/src/file-bundle-sink.ts:96-104: when instanceIdentity is pinned and the directory is shared, the export sweep can remove a live sibling's file.
  8. packages/electron/src/video-capture.ts:376-388: snapshot() does not apply the ring cutoff, so frames that expired since the last tick can still ship (CodeRabbit).
  9. Docs:
    • docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet", while section 5 marks S0–S6 done.
    • The "Known residuals" section of the PR description is out of date. Recovery now streams, and the IndexedDB read path has been measured (section 9). Two items remain: the viewer unzipping the new member order (manifest.json last), and the viewer reading only the first replay member.

Merge recommendation

Approve once CI is green, including the real-runtime e2e job that covers the streamed upload (pipeBody, createReadStream) on Bun and Deno. No P0–P2 findings are open. The P3 items can be fixed in this PR or afterwards.

Most important items

  1. Decide how the window filter treats performance records, and pin that with a test.
  2. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  3. Update the design-doc status line and the PR description.
  4. Fix the retired set leak in the chunk store.

Positives

  • The fix is small and lands where the review pointed. The new comment explains why the factory call cannot simply be moved or rethrown at that point.
  • Every round has answered the previous findings with a regression test, and the open list is now P3 only.

Minor follow-up Skip a window capture while the previous one for that display is still pending.

279-279: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Skip a window capture while the previous one for that display is still pending.

When a window's capturePage() does not settle, grab drops that window after layerTimeoutMs, but the request keeps running. Each later tick then starts another request for the same window and display, so the number of outstanding requests grows while the window stays visible and hung. Refuse a new capture while one is pending for the same display and window. The pending entry clears when the request settles. A refused capture is reported as an error on each tick until the pending request settles. A request that never settles keeps that window out of this display's frames.

Update electronWindowLayers so each capture closure tracks whether capturePage
is still pending for its display-and-window pair; reject another capture for
that pair until the original request settles, and clear the pending state when
it settles. Preserve the existing per-tick error handling so refused captures
are reported and a request that never settles keeps that window out of

Align video display 0 with the displays trace when no app is passed.

Without app, the displays tracker gets no key-window source and numbers the primary display 0. electronDisplays in display-video.ts still numbers the focused window's display 0. When the focused window is on a non-primary display, video displayId: 0 and displays-trace id: 0 name different monitors. launch-main.ts documents that these IDs must agree. Use one numbering rule for both producers, or pass the same key-window source to both when app is absent.

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path, durable staging, the capture store's lane model and per-display video. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and the test plan still shows CI unchecked.

New commit since my last review: 5a94293f

I read the source diffs in video-capture.ts and display-video.ts and checked them against the display tracker's numbering rule. One new P3 is posted inline.

Sev Location Summary
P3 packages/electron/src/video-capture.ts:311-318 The new composing guard runs after grab. While a compose for a display is pending, every tick still runs capturePage + toJPEG on each of that display's windows and then throws the result away. A compositor that never settles therefore costs a full grab per tick, indefinitely, and nothing is reported after the first timeout. Fix: check composing.has(key) before grabbing.

What this commit fixes, and what I checked:

  • Compose pile-up behind a hung compositor. At most one compose per physical display is now in flight. release runs on both settle paths, and a compose that throws synchronously never enters the set. The remaining gap is the P3 above.
  • Failed window as an opaque placeholder. A failed or timed-out grab keeps its place in the z-order as bytes: undefined, so the window behind it cannot show through. A display where every grab failed records no frame. The compose type change makes host compositors handle the new case at compile time.
  • Timer range checks. A stuckMs or layerTimeoutMs outside 1..2147483647 now throws RangeError, including a derived layerTimeoutMs of 0 from stuckMs: 1. Because the video.source factory call is guarded since 9251a5c8, a bad value in a factory is reported and launch continues without video.
  • Display numbering with a given key-window source (CodeRabbit's "align video display 0 with the trace when no app is passed"). A given keyWindowBounds is now authoritative. When it returns no rectangle, the primary display is 0, which matches the trace (display-tracker.ts:206-209). Without app, launchMain passes a factory whose keyWindowBounds returns undefined, and the trace has no key source, so both pick the primary display. I consider that finding addressed.
    • Edge case, not a finding: for a key window that overlaps no display, the trace uses getDisplayMatching (the nearest display), while the video falls back to the lowest native id. A fully off-screen key window is rare, so I'm not raising it.

Earlier findings still open

None of these are touched by the latest commit. All are P3.

  1. packages/core/src/bundle-stream-assembler.ts:250-257: the entry.timestamp < plan.start filter drops performance transactions that started before the window and ended inside it. Recovery applies no plan, so it keeps them.
  2. packages/core/src/bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker. This is latent until a Blob sink is wired in.

  7. packages/node-utils/src/file-bundle-sink.ts:96-104: with a pinned instanceIdentity and a shared directory, the export sweep can remove a live sibling's file.
  8. packages/electron/src/video-capture.ts:398-410: snapshot() does not apply the ring cutoff (CodeRabbit). The per-window pending-capture guard in electronWindowLayers (CodeRabbit's latest follow-up) is also still open.
  9. Docs:
    • docs/design/streaming-export.md:3 still says "Nothing here is implemented yet".
    • The PR description's "Known residuals" is stale. Recovery now streams and the IndexedDB read path is measured. What remains is the viewer unzipping manifest.json-last bundles and the viewer reading only the first replay member.

  2. Skip the window grab while a display's compose is still pending (new P3).
  3. Make retainBody keep the Blob marker before a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. Update the design-doc status line and the PR description.

Positives

  • The placeholder layer is a careful privacy and fidelity fix: a window that failed to grab can no longer reveal whatever is behind it.
  • Making a given key-window source authoritative removes the last way video display 0 and trace display 0 could disagree on the normal path.
  • Each change comes with tests, including the hung-compose test and the range checks on the derived default.

Severity: P3 Low

Problem: The new composing guard runs after grab. While a display's compose is still pending, every tick still calls layer.capture() for every window on that display, waits for all of them (up to layerTimeoutMs), and then discards the result at if (composing.has(key)) return;.

Impact: The guard stops composes from piling up, but the expensive part of each frame keeps running. With the real adapter, capture is webContents.capturePage() followed by toJPEG(quality), which is a GPU readback plus a JPEG encode per window. If a compositor never settles, this happens at fps for the rest of the process and records nothing. After the first compose timeout, nothing more is reported (the early return is silent), so the host cannot see the cost.

Scenario: A host compose built on an offscreen canvas or image library hangs once, for example on a worker that died. Display 0 has three windows. At the default 1 fps, main grabs and JPEG-encodes three windows every second indefinitely, and every result is thrown away.

Fix: Check composing.has(key) before grab(...). key only depends on display, so it can be computed at the top of frameOf. Extend the "does not start another compose…" test so it also counts capture calls while the compose is held.

Re-review after the latest push (PR #173)

Overall risk: Medium. The PR is large and touches the report hot path, durable staging, the capture store's lane model and per-display video. I read the code and traced callers. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, and the test plan still shows CI unchecked.

New commit since my last review: e883b262

This commit fixes the P3 I raised at packages/electron/src/video-capture.ts:323. I found no new defects and posted no inline comments.

  • What changed: frameOf now checks composing.has(key) before grab(...) (video-capture.ts:311-316). While a display's compose is still pending, no window of that display is grabbed, so a hung compositor no longer costs a capturePage + toJPEG per window per tick.
  • The second check (:321-323) is still needed. A tick abandoned at stuckMs can finish grabbing after a newer tick has started a compose for the same display. The check after the grab stops it from starting a second compose. The existing test "an abandoned tick that finishes grabbing after a newer tick started a compose…" covers that path.
  • Other displays are not affected. The early return is per display key, so a display with a hung compose does not hold up the others in the same tick.
  • The ring id refresh still runs first (:307-310), so a display that is skipped this tick still gives up an id another display now holds.
  • The test was extended to count grabs while the compose is held (video-capture.test.ts:554), and it asserts that grabbing resumes once the compose settles (:561). Moving the check back below grab would fail that assertion.
  • Known trade-off, not a finding: a compose that never settles keeps its display skipped for the rest of the process, and only the first stuckMs timeout is reported. Before 5a94293f a new compose was started every tick instead, so this is the intended behaviour, and the guard is released as soon as the compose settles.

  2. packages/core/src/client.ts:727: the comment still calls arrayCapture "re-iterable", but the stream is single-pass.
  3. packages/core/src/bundle-body.ts:84-101: retainBody drops the blob marker. This is latent until a Blob sink is wired in.
  4. packages/node-utils/src/bundle-store.ts:43: putFrame does not fsync the directory after rename. writeFileAtomic has the same gap, so this is not a regression.

  10. Docs:
