feat(agent-device): the allocate reply reports the granted device mode - #1254
The agent-device front now reports the granted mode: data.lease.device carries deviceMode, the mode the device has (ADR 0007 §8). Why: callstack/agent-device#4183 can only check a requested mode if the backend reports the grant, as its maintainer asked.
withGrantedDevice takes grant.device and adds deviceMode from device.mode. A phone has no mode, so no key.
Released agent-device (0.21.36) reads named fields only and ignores it.
A slim request can be granted full, and that is not an error (ADR 0007 §4, §8). A client should refuse only slim granted for full.
Simulator and emulator replies carry deviceMode, slim and full, on a worker and through a gateway — edge.test.ts, gateway-front.test.ts, red before the fix
A phone's reply has no deviceMode — edge.test.ts, red when a phone is made to report one
pnpm exec vitest run --project unit src/agent-device/ src/source-hygiene.test.ts — 518 passed, 1 skipped, at e9e3df9; typecheck clean. Website build and OpenAPI check not repeated on this head
Real simulator: full and slim replies carry the granted deviceMode (local slow-lane test, 2026-11-05)
Assumptions
Assumption: field name — deviceMode, not simlock's mode, because lease.device is agent-device's reply shape and #4183 reads that key
Assumption: no issue — this answers a request on #4183, so the branch has no issue number
Spec review skipped: no issue. Code review ran behaviour and tests on Opus; Assessment: complete. Fix-check at 2bc64d6: a merge of main that keeps both sides unchanged, verified by the coordinator, no lens.
Hardware: pass. On a real iOS simulator, a local slow-lane test (not committed) allocated with deviceMode "full" and "slim" on a slim-default worker; the reply's data.lease.device.deviceMode matched the granted mode both times (2.5 min).
`data.lease.device` said which model, OS and image tag a lease got but not
its mode, so a client could not see a mode it asked for go unmet. It now
carries `deviceMode`, the mode the device reports (ADR 0007 §8). A phone has
none. Released agent-device clients read named fields only, so they ignore it.

The allocation success path now includes the granted device’s deviceMode in the lease response when defined. Tests cover slim and full modes and verify that phone responses omit the field. The agent-device documentation describes the field for simulator and emulator allocations.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 2bc64
Allocation replies now report the granted device mode when available. No merge-blocking risk was established.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 2bc64
The change reports additional metadata about an already granted device. The inspected change does not expand allocation authority, expose other devices, or alter lease ownership and cleanup.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The additional exposure is the mode of the device already granted to the allocation caller. The inspected change adds no device enumeration, cross-owner lookup, credential field, or privileged operation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing front rejects non-agent identities, checks the RPC request before routing, and passes the caller identity into allocation and lease dispatch. The new response field does not bypass or replace these controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The new metadata is assigned to a parsed reply body. It is not written into the grant, ownership map, or cleanup scope, leaving the existing ownership and failure-containment transitions unchanged.

Test the granted mode when it differs from the requested mode.
These cases do not send deviceMode. Add a request for slim on an unslimmable runtime and assert that the reply reports full. This checks that the response does not echo the request.

Update the relevant edge test so it requests deviceMode "slim" on an unslimmable
runtime and asserts that the reply reports "full". Keep the assertion focused on
the granted mode, ensuring the response does not merely echo the requested mode.

Granted mode differing from the requested mode (Trivial): not changed. The edge test's driver fixture reports mode: "slim" while its requests send no deviceMode, and the reply must say slim, so the reply cannot be an echo of the request. withGrantedDevice reads only grant.device.mode. A slim request granted full would exercise no other path, and pushing a test now would move a head that has already been reviewed.
Docstring coverage: not applicable. This repo allows only why: comments (architecture rule 17).
