feat: Pi and OpenCode install OMMS updates in the background - #249
Pi and OpenCode V2 now install approved OMMS releases by themselves, as Claude Code already does. Users who are not technical never type an update command.
At session start OMMS compares its version with npm latest. When npm is newer (not a prerelease), it runs the host's own command in a detached process: pi update npm:om-memory-system or opencode plugin update om-memory-system.
One update per release per host within 30 minutes (marker in ~/.omms/<host>-plugin-update.json).
The footer shows omms: ✔ · <v> installed, restart and one message, only after OMMS finds the new version on disk. Otherwise it keeps · <v> available and names the command.
OpenCode's message also names opencode service restart: the background service keeps the old copy loaded.
The OpenCode background service removes older OMMS cache copies (about 900 MB each) after 24 hours. It keeps the running, newer and recorded (runtime.json) copies.
Pinned and local installs are skipped. OMMS_DISABLE_UPDATE_CHECK=1 turns the check and update off. Claude Code is unchanged.
Records
OpenSpec: pi-opencode-auto-update and host-update-verify-and-prune, both archived with specs synced.
ADR-045 (hosts update OMMS with their own command), TDR-071 (OpenCode 2.2 live-check findings).
Evidence
bun run ci:local: EXIT=0 (last run on the code in this head; later commits change only Markdown).
Tests first for each part, with mutation checks.
Live check in a scratch HOME (real pi and opencode 2.2.5, 5.5.0 to 5.6.1): update ran once, marker installed, footer installed, restart, new version after restart. It found two bugs fixed here: OpenCode 2.2's timestamp cache folder made every install look pinned, and the TUI restart alone did not reload the service.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Pi and OpenCode can install eligible updates in the background and show whether an update is available, installing, or ready after a restart.
OpenCode now cleans up eligible older cached copies while retaining copies that may still be in use.
Bug Fixes
Update notices now reflect whether the new version is actually present on disk; unsuccessful updates remain marked as available.
Decides when to run the host's own update command, de-duplicates for
30 minutes, runs it detached and records the outcome in a marker file.
Includes the OpenSpec change pi-opencode-auto-update.
Pi and OpenCode V2 now run their own update command when npm has a newer
release, then show "<version> installed, restart" in the footer and one
message. Pinned and local installs keep the "available" notice with the
command. OMMS_DISABLE_UPDATE_CHECK=1 turns both off.
OpenCode 2.2 adds a timestamp folder before node_modules, so every
unpinned install looked pinned and never updated. The OpenCode restart
notice now names opencode service restart, because the background
service keeps the old copy loaded. Both found in the live check.
OMMS now shows "installed, restart" only after it finds the new version
on disk. The OpenCode background service removes older OMMS cache copies
after 24 hours, keeping the running, newer and recorded copies. Adds
ADR-044 and TDR-071 and archives the host-update-verify-and-prune change.
Pi and OpenCode now check for eligible releases and run their host-specific update commands in the background. The adapters report update status and verify installed versions. OpenCode also removes eligible older timestamped cache copies. Documentation and specifications describe these behaviors.
A shared service checks update eligibility, starts detached host commands, records outcomes in marker files, and confirms installed versions. Tests cover update selection, markers, polling, and notices.
Installed-copy verification and cache cleanup src/services/host-copies.ts, src/v2/plugin.ts, tests/host-copies.test.ts, tests/v2-cache-cleanup.test.ts
Host-copy helpers identify installed copies and eligible timestamped cache folders. OpenCode setup starts cleanup without waiting and preserves specified copies. Tests cover cleanup conditions, failures, and wiring.
Pi update lifecycle src/adapters/pi/*, tests/pi-self-update.test.ts, tests/pi-extension.test.ts
Pi starts update checks at session start, reports update status, and stops the watcher at shutdown. Tests cover notifications, status suffixes, duplicate suppression, and installed-version verification.

Background updates are implemented, but cache cleanup can delete unrelated project files in a matching directory layout. Restrict cleanup to verified cache locations before merging. Smaller update coordination, status, and configuration issues also remain.

Explanation
The title "feat: Pi and OpenCode install OMMS updates in the background" matches the main change in the changeset. The PR adds detached background self-update for npm-installed OMMS in Pi and OpenCode V2, with marker files, 30-minute duplicate suppression, restart notices, and an OpenCode service scheduler. The title names both hosts, the background install behavior, and the feature type. It omits details such as cache cleanup and verification of the installed version, which is acceptable for a title.

- Line 11: Update the retention rule in the proposal to base the 24-hour
threshold on the age of the running copy, not the time between installations.
Keep the running copy, newer versions, the version recorded in runtime.json, and
copies without a readable version; only remove eligible older versions once the
running copy is at least 24 hours old.
Review comments at @src/adapters/opencode/tui-status.ts:
- Around line 182-184: Start the existing background update check during server
plugin initialization so OpenCode installations that do not load the TUI still
check for updates; preserve the existing TUI update behavior and reuse the
update-check mechanism exposed by the selfUpdate and readUpdateStatus callbacks.
Review comments at @src/adapters/pi/self-update.ts:
- Around line 27-28: Update PI_UPDATE_ARGS and the detached update flow that
uses PI_UPDATE_COMMAND to carry the session’s existing project trust into the Pi
update, including trust granted through defaultProjectTrust without saved trust.
Ensure the update never approves a project that the session has not already
trusted, and make the suggested command preserve the same behavior.
- Around line 52-55: Update the self-update eligibility flow around
readPiSettings to determine the package source from the running Pi copy,
honoring a project-pinned OMMS source over global settings. Use that effective
source to decide whether to update, preventing an update from targeting the
global copy when the project copy is running.
Review comments at @src/services/host-copies.ts:
- Around line 140-141: Update the no-older-siblings early return in the cleanup
flow using the older filter and return in the host-copy processing method: log
the cleanup pass with zero counts before returning counts, and update the
relevant test to expect that log instead of silence.
- Around line 80-82: Update the cleanup flow that parses numeric directory names
and assigns result.stamp to verify that each candidate is inside a confirmed
OpenCode cache directory before recursively removing it. Preserve cleanup for
verified cache copies, and ensure sibling project directories are never treated
as removable cache entries.
Review comments at @src/services/host-self-update.ts:
- Around line 240-241: When polling reaches the deadline in the detached-runner
outcome flow, notify both adapters with recovery guidance without reporting the
update as failed. Update the timeout branch near options.onSettled(status),
preserving the existing outcome handling for completed updates.
- Around line 150-158: Update the launch flow around deps.writeMarker and
deps.spawnDetached so synchronous and asynchronous runner-launch failures clear
the pending marker before returning or allowing a later attempt. Use the
existing marker cleanup mechanism and handle asynchronous failures through the
launch API’s established failure signal; preserve the marker when the runner
launches successfully.
- Around line 144-152: Serialize the read-check-write sequence using
cross-process coordination so concurrent processes cannot both pass the retry
check before either records the update. Update the flow using deps.readMarker
and deps.writeMarker to perform the marker check and write atomically under the
coordination mechanism, while preserving the existing retry-window behavior and
ensuring coordination is released on all paths.
- Around line 98-99: Keep update outcomes separate by release by changing the
marker persistence around markerPath to store each result under its release
identity instead of overwriting one shared outcome. Ensure the watcher and
30-minute repeat-check read the entry for the release they are handling, so an
older runner cannot replace a newer release’s result.
- Around line 183-186: Update the installed-version check in the self-update
flow so it verifies the cache copy OpenCode will select on restart, rather than
accepting any entry in installed that matches or exceeds version. Return
"installed" only when that selected copy satisfies the requested version;
otherwise return "failed".
Review comments at @tests/host-copies.test.ts:
- Line 353: Update the directory fixture setup in the test containing the
`recorded` link so it uses a junction on Windows instead of `symlinkSync`, while
retaining the existing fixture behavior on other platforms. Ensure the
recorded-copy pruning check runs without requiring Windows symbolic-link
privileges.
Review comments at @tests/pi-self-update.test.ts:
- Around line 18-20: Run the default-settings path assertion in a subprocess
configured with a temporary home, rather than allowing it to use the parent
process’s real home. Ensure the subprocess cannot overwrite or recursively
delete the real `~/.pi`, while preserving the existing `tempDirs` cleanup in
`afterEach`.

OpenCode's background service now runs the update check too, so OpenCode
without its TUI also updates. The cache clean-up only treats timestamp
folders under an om-memory-system cache folder, and logs zero counts.
Tests no longer touch the real home folder.

Review comments at @docs/upgrading.md:
- Around line 35-40: Update the pinned-version guidance in the upgrade guide and
the notice so users know that `opencode plugin update om-memory-system` skips
exact-version pins; direct them to replace the pin with an unpinned or newer
version to receive the update.
- Around line 35-40: Update the OMMS update decision described by the
pinned-version section to check Pi’s effective loaded source before starting `pi
update npm:om-memory-system`. Skip the update when Pi loads a pinned OMMS entry,
even if an unversioned entry appears later in the settings list.
- Around line 42-43: Update the OMMS_DISABLE_UPDATE_CHECK guidance in the
upgrade documentation to explain that disabling checks for an already-running
OpenCode service requires setting the variable in the service’s environment and
restarting the service with that setting; clarify that setting it only for a new
TUI does not affect the running service.
- Line 53: Update the cleanup flow that uses the ~/.omms/runtime.json record to
distinguish a missing record from a read failure. Skip cleanup when the record
cannot be read, and preserve the existing behavior for a genuinely missing
record.
- Line 14: Serialize the update decision that checks and reserves the 30-minute
release marker using cross-process exclusion, so checking and reserving are one
protected operation and only one session starts the host update command. Reuse
the existing marker and locking mechanisms; establish the implementation
location from the update flow rather than adding behavior to this documentation
text.
Review comments at @src/adapters/opencode/tui-status.ts:
- Around line 23-24: Update the update-state handling around updateState so
installing release A does not stop checks for newer releases while OpenCode
remains open. Continue polling for newer releases, and preserve the installed
notice for A until a newer release is found.
- Line 60: In the watcher completion handling associated with stopWatch, capture
the release being watched and ignore its outcome unless state.update still
matches that release. This prevents an older watcher from marking a newer
release as installed or stopping its checks; preserve the existing behavior for
outcomes matching the current release.
Review comments at @src/services/host-copies.ts:
- Around line 84-87: Update the cleanup logic around the `CACHE_FOLDER` check to
verify that the running copy is inside the OpenCode cache root before deleting
any siblings. A numeric folder name alone must not qualify; preserve
project-local copies such as `om-memory-system/2024` and their sibling files.
- Around line 150-159: Update the cleanup loop over older copies so it checks
whether an active process still uses each installation before removing its
timestamp folder. Establish and use the existing reliable process-ownership
mechanism; skip removal for copies in use and preserve the current version and
keep-set checks for other copies.
Review comments at @tests/host-copies.test.ts:
- Line 374: Register the temporary directory created for `links` in `tempDirs`
so the existing `afterEach` teardown removes it after each test run.
- Line 300: The non-cache fixture does not catch cache detection based only on
the parent directory name. Update the `addCopy` test setup so it includes a
project outside the cache whose parent is named `om-memory-system@latest`, and
distinguish that fixture from the positive cache fixtures; verify its
`keep-me.txt` is preserved.
Review comments at @tests/pi-self-update.test.ts:
- Around line 311-331: Update the child-process assertions in the test using
spawnSync so it first verifies child.status is 0, then checks child.stdout
contains the expected SOURCE:npm output; do not use stderr when validating the
result.
