Summary

Compared the docs against CRS origin/main (v4.30.0) and updated everything that drifted on settings.

  • New page 2-how-crs-works/2-5-configuration-settings.md: a reference for every 900xxx setting in crs-setup.conf with variable, default, enforcing rule, and when to change it.
  • SecDefaultAction: self-contained mode page and rule-writing page still showed a single phase:2 line. Since 4.28.0 the setup file sets a default for phases 1-5 (#4675).
  • UTF-8 validation (tx.crs_validate_utf8_encoding) is enabled by default since 4.28.0 (#4647); rule 900950 now disables it.
  • _method override toggle tx.allow_method_override_parameter / rule 920650 at PL2 (#4416) documented.
  • Content types: application/*+json and AWS x-amz-json types are auto-allowed with the JSON body processor since 4.30.0 (rules 901360/901370, #4775, #4828). Added a tip after example 9 in the tuning page.
  • Cross-link from the install page to the new reference.
  • crs_latest_release bumped 4.28.0 → 4.30.0.

Test plan

  • hugo --minify --baseURL "/" builds, new page renders, refs resolve
  • .github/workflows/english_test.sh passes
  • All rule IDs cited in the new page checked against CRS origin/main

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a configuration settings reference covering defaults, behavior, and configuration options.
    • Updated guidance on JSON content types, default actions, anomaly scoring, and traditional-mode configuration.
    • Added a link to the configuration settings reference in the installation guide.
  • Updates
    • Updated the listed latest CRS release from 4.28.0 to 4.30.0.

Add a reference page listing every crs-setup.conf setting with its
default, enforcing rule, and when to change it. Update passages that
still showed the single phase:2 SecDefaultAction: CRS 4.28.0 sets a
default for phases 1-5. Note that UTF-8 validation is now on by default,
document the _method override toggle (900210/920650), and point out that
application/*+json and AWS JSON content types are auto-allowed since
4.30.0 (rules 901360/901370). Bump crs_latest_release to 4.30.0.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the proposed changes, provides relevant context, and includes a test plan with reported results. It uses Summary and Test plan headings instead of the template headings, but it contains the required information and is sufficiently complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Rule Change Requires Go-Ftw Test Coverage

Explanation

Not applicable: the pull request changes only documentation, configuration metadata, and lychee.toml. It adds or modifies no SecRule in rules/*.conf or plugins/*.conf, and changes no pattern under regex-assembly/.

Full details: Redos Risk & Re2 Compatibility

Explanation

Not applicable. The pull request changes documentation, configuration metadata, and lychee.toml; it does not add or modify @rx patterns in rules/*.conf, regex-assembly/*.ra, or regexp.MustCompile/re.compile calls in tooling code.

Full details: False Positive Risk & Existing Coverage

Explanation

Not applicable. The pull request changes documentation, configuration metadata, and link-checker settings only. It does not add or widen a detection pattern, or add a rule, in rules/.conf, plugins/.conf, or regex-assembly/.

Full details: Rule & Config Breaking Changes

Explanation

PASS — the PR changes only documentation, the Hugo release metadata, and the link-checker exclusion. The authoritative diff contains no CRS rule files, crs-setup.conf.example, .data files, tags/messages, paranoia levels, or Go/Python tooling APIs. The crs_latest_release change is documentation-site metadata, not a CRS deployment default. Therefore none of the specified breaking-change conditions is introduced.

Full details: Owasp Security (Web, Api & Llm)

Explanation

No OWASP security issue is introduced by this documentation-only change. The new guidance preserves secure defaults: anomaly scoring remains the default, response-rule RFDoS risk remains warned at content/1-getting-started/1-1-crs-installation.md:100-108, and unsupported content types are explicitly warned against unless the correct body processor is forced at content/2-how-crs-works/2-5-configuration-settings.md:85-90. The CRS source confirms rules 901360 and 901370 both allow the documented JSON types and force the JSON processor (coreruleset commit 30cb436b261a9f5ec32a5a0677e17f3cfa1a8739, rules/REQUEST-901-INITIALIZATION.conf:402-454). The _method setting is disabled by default and the documentation identifies rule 920650 at PL2 (.../2-5-configuration-settings.md:68-70). No credentials, authentication logic, authorization logic, endpoints, dependencies, or executable security behavior changed.

Full details: Unpinned Dependencies & Actions

Explanation

Passed — not applicable. The pull request changes documentation, config/_default/config.toml, and lychee.toml. It does not change a listed dependency manifest, lockfile, Dockerfile, workflow, pipeline, or other covered dependency file, so no pinning check is required.

Full details: Secrets, Payloads & Pii In Logs

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes documentation, site metadata, and a link-checker exclusion only. The added SecDefaultAction examples document log/auditlog, but they do not emit logs or add request, response, payload, credential, token, IP, or telemetry data. No log artifacts, captured traffic, stack traces, or full-object logging changes are present.

Full details: New Dependency Scrutiny

Explanation

No new dependency entry, GitHub Action, or Buildkite plugin is introduced. The PR changes only documentation/configuration files and lychee.toml; no listed dependency manifest or workflow file is changed, and the added lines contain no uses: or plugin reference.

Full details: Install & Build-Time Code Execution

Explanation

No flagged install or build-time code execution was introduced. The PR changes Markdown, TOML documentation/configuration, and a link-checker exclusion only; the diff contains no new or changed CI workflow, shell script, Dockerfile, package lifecycle script, Terraform provisioner, Go checksum bypass, or unpinned remote package/binary installation.

Full details: Renovate: Config Present And Valid

Explanation

PASS — The PR touches the repository root via lychee.toml, so the scan scope applies. However, no Renovate config file is changed, and renovate.json exists in the PR tree. The check therefore does not trigger its validation checks.

Full details: Ai Contribution Disclosure

Explanation

⚠️ WARNING: The PR still fails the AI Contribution Disclosure policy. The PR body has no ## ai disclosure, ## what, ## why, or ## refs sections. It includes a Claude Code session link, and the reviewed range contains Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude-Session trailers in three commit messages. The change is material: 149 insertions across seven files, including a new 123-line reference page.

Resolution

Add lowercase ## what, ## why, and ## refs sections. Add ## ai disclosure with concrete **tools used** including the model and version, **assisted with** describing the generated content, and **review performed** describing specific verification. Remove Co-Authored-By, Claude-Session, and other AI-tool signature lines from the PR body and every commit message.

Link checker was failing on https://www.debuggex.com/ (502 Bad Gateway, unrelated to this PR; the site is down). Added it to the lychee exclude list alongside the other flaky hosts. If it stays down, the Debuggex entries in 6-7-tools-for-rule-writers.md should be removed instead.

Double-checked debuggex.com: the domain is registered until 2027, DNS resolves, and nginx answers with 502 Bad Gateway, so it is a backend outage rather than a dead site. The Wayback Machine has a working snapshot from 2026-09-26. The lychee exclusion is a temporary workaround; the Debuggex entries in the docs should stay.
