A page where visitors send a request to the CRS Sandbox and see which rules matched, on the engine, CRS version and paranoia level they pick. Built like the CRS 3->4 config migrator: a shortcode with inline markup, styles and script, no build step. The form covers method, path/query, body and content type, presets (path traversal, SQLi, XSS, command injection, scanner UA, JSON body, benign), engine and CRS version discovered from GET /backends, paranoia level, detection-only mode, detection PL, anomaly threshold, application exclusions and extra headers. The result shows the verdict (blocked, detected but not blocked, clean, edge error, no answer), engine and exact CRS tag, anomaly score, the matched rules linked to their rule files, the x-unique-id for support, a copyable curl equivalent and the raw json-report. static/_headers: connect-src gains https://sandbox.coreruleset.org, otherwise the CSP blocks the page's fetch on Cloudflare Pages. Menu entry under Documentation. Needs coreruleset/crs-sandbox#160 (CORS at the edge) deployed: the sandbox currently proxies preflights to the WAF, which blocks any preflight whose URL carries the attack. Remove HEAD from the method list, or handle it as a status-only request.
The verdict comes from the json-report in the response body. A HEAD response has no body. With HEAD, r.text() at Line 370 returns '', so JSON.parse fails and the report becomes { error: 'empty body, HTTP 403' }. render() then always shows NO VERDICT, even when 949110 blocked the request.
The generated curl at Line 297 also emits curl -i -X HEAD. That command waits for a body that never arrives, so it hangs until timeout. curl needs -I for HEAD.

Do not worry, the idea is to try the WAF so any method (or even typing stuff here) should be allowed.

@fzipi Thanks for the guidance. Testing arbitrary methods fits the sandbox’s purpose, so I retract the recommendation to remove HEAD.
The response-handling concern remains separate: HEAD has no response body, so it needs a status-only result rather than a JSON verdict. The generated curl command also needs -I instead of -X HEAD.

Learning: In coreruleset/website, layouts/shortcodes/crs-sandbox.html is a WAF testing interface. Its intended scope includes arbitrary HTTP methods and user-entered method values. Do not recommend restricting methods merely because a method cannot return a JSON report.

Use --data-raw in the generated curl command.
--data treats a leading @ as a file reference. Example: a body of @/etc/passwd or @config.json makes curl upload that file from the user's machine. The sandbox logs requests in full, so that file content gets logged. --data-raw sends the string literally.

Gate the merge on the sandbox CORS deployment (crs-sandbox#160).
When the sandbox returns a blocked json-report response without Access-Control-Allow-Origin, the browser rejects fetch. This catch branch then displays NO ANSWER and reports a possible connectivity failure instead of the 949110 blocking result. Ensure production includes CORS headers on 403 and edge-error responses before release.

The browser rewrites the URL before fetch() sends it: "#fragments" are dropped, ".." segments and backslashes resolved, control characters removed, most special characters percent-encoded. It also silently drops forbidden request headers (Cookie, Host, Referer, Origin, Sec-*...), and Safari drops User-Agent too. None of that was visible on the page, and the curl line was built from the typed text, so curl and the browser could legitimately disagree. - the result shows "Sent as <url>" whenever the browser changed what was typed, and the curl line uses that URL so it reproduces the request - a warning names the extra headers the browser will not send, and notes the Safari User-Agent case; the placeholder no longer suggests Cookie - a fetch() refusal (header value with a line break, bad URL) is reported as BROWSER REFUSED with an explanation, distinct from an unreachable sandbox - redirects are followed (redirect: 'manual' gave an opaque status-0 response) and the result says it shows the verdict of the final request - a "Good to know" bullet explains the normalisation and points to curl (--path-as-is) for raw bytes Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The preset payload contained a literal </script>, which ends the script element in every browser: the rest of the page script was rendered as text and nothing worked on the Cloudflare preview. Escape the slash so the HTML parser leaves it alone; Hugo's minifier preserves the escape. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both boxes were hidden by a class rule in the stylesheet while the script only cleared the inline style, so they never appeared in a browser. Hide them inline like the other toggled blocks. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Separate render failures from browser refusals.
render() handles a top-level null report and unexpected top-level shapes. However, an unexpected matched_rules entry can still throw, for example {"matched_rules":[null]} or an entry whose data is not a string. The shared rejection handler then reports BROWSER REFUSED and says nothing was sent, even though fetch() received a response.
Handle the network rejection as the second argument to then(). Catch response parsing and rendering errors inside the response branch and report NO VERDICT.

A
/sandboxpage where visitors send a request to the CRS Sandbox from the browser and see which rules matched, on the engine, CRS version and paranoia level they pick. Linked from the Documentation menu as "Sandbox".The CORS change it needs on the sandbox (coreruleset/crs-sandbox#160) is live in production, so the preview at https://feat-sandbox-playground.website-1u6.pages.dev/sandbox/ works against the real sandbox.
What is in it
layouts/shortcodes/crs-sandbox.html: the playground, same shape as the CRS 3→4 config migrator shortcode (inline markup, styles and script, no build step, no dependencies). Method, path/query, optional body with content type, presets (path traversal, SQLi, XSS, command injection, scanner UA, JSON body, benign), engine and CRS version filled fromGET /backendsat load (static fallback if that fails), paranoia level, detection-only mode, detection PL, anomaly threshold, extra headers (with a warning for the ones browsers refuse to send). Result: verdict badge (blocked / detected but not blocked / no rules matched / edge error / no answer / browser refused), status, engine and exact CRS tag, anomaly score, table of matched rules with each rule id linked to its CRS rule file, matched data, thex-unique-idfor support, the URL the browser actually sent when it normalised the input (dot segments, backslashes, percent-encoding), a copyablecurlequivalent of the request, and the rawjson-report. Takes anapiparameter for a local sandbox ({{< crs-sandbox api="http://localhost:8088" >}}).content/pages/sandbox.md: intro, the shortcode, the headers table and curl usage, and the caveats (the body is the verdict not the page, what "blocked" means, what browsers rewrite before sending, requests are logged; bug reports go to coreruleset/coreruleset).static/_headers:connect-srcgainshttps://sandbox.coreruleset.org. Without it the CSP blocks the page'sfetch()on Cloudflare Pages.config/_default/languages.yaml: menu entry under Documentation.Tested
Built with Hugo extended 0.163.1 (the CI pin) and Dart Sass, no new warnings. The minified build (what Cloudflare Pages deploys) was driven headlessly (jsdom) against a local sandbox: 28 checks covering discovery, a blocked XSS on nginx at PL2 with the rule table and links, detection-only mode, a POST JSON SQLi on apache, a benign request, a scanner user agent via the extra-headers box, the explained 400 for coraza + v3-lts, an edge rejection, browser URL normalisation shown and used in the curl line, the forbidden-header warning, a header the browser refuses, a followed redirect, and an unreachable sandbox. It was also opened in headless Chromium and a request sent to production from it, since jsdom cannot tell whether anything is visible (the first preview had the inline script cut short by a literal
</script>in the XSS preset and the result panel hidden by CSS; both fixed).Driving the page also turned up a sandbox bug: CRS v3 backends answer 500 for any paranoia level above 1 (coreruleset/crs-sandbox#161).
