Problem

Returning to pages through browser history can restore stale data, including administrative controls that no longer match the server state. The individual history-refresh drafts each add a similar global navigation listener.

Change

Moves history refresh handling into the existing current-page tracking listener. It reloads only the page-specific props, resets paginated commit data where needed, and falls back to a document reload when the restored page is no longer available.

Tests

The current-page history test passed. Type checks and lint passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Relevant content on supported pages now refreshes when navigating backward or forward through browser history, while preserving the current page state.
    • Supported pages also refresh when returning to a page restored from the browser’s back-forward cache. Other pages are not refreshed automatically.
    • If a refresh encounters an unavailable page or denied access, the browser reloads the page.

Walkthrough

The current-page tracker refreshes configured page props after Inertia history navigation and persisted pageshow events. Refreshes preserve state and replace history. HTTP 403 and 404 responses trigger a browser page reload. Unit tests cover refresh options and tracking lifecycle.

Changes: History Navigation Reloads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and perform page refreshes
resources/js/lib/current-page.ts
A component-to-options map defines the props and scroll behavior for refreshes. The refresh helper visits the stored URL, preserves state, replaces history, and reloads the browser page after HTTP 403 or 404 responses.
Track history restoration and validate refreshes
resources/js/lib/current-page.ts, tests/Unit/CurrentPageHistory.test.tsx
The tracker stores the current component and URL, refreshes configured pages after history navigation and persisted pageshow events, and removes both listeners when stopped. Tests cover refresh options, response handling, and tracking lifecycle.

Possibly related PRs

  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1401: Both PRs reload features when history navigation restores operations/features; this PR also handles persisted pageshow events.
  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1458: This PR adds history and bfcache catch-up for live props and moderation. The current PR separately refreshes selected non-live props.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 247d4

Restoring a starred photo can replace the feed with the photo page. This is a narrow issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 247d4

The refresh is limited to three page types and retains server-side authorization for administrative actions and private data. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Concurrent navigation, failed refreshes, and photo-overlay restoration remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The global listener initiates refreshes only for the three configured components. Their normal routes remain authenticated; operations reads additionally require admin authorization, and starred commits are queried for the current user.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The photo-URL edge case also passes through a server request authorization check. For authenticated users, it requires commit visibility, image visibility, and an in-range photo index. The inspected alternate URL does not establish a data-access bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new tracker delegates response ordering and cancellation to Inertia without adding a local completion-time identity check. Its mocked-router test checks refresh options, listener cleanup, and 403/404 recovery, but does not establish concurrent response behavior or recovery from an unsuccessful refresh. These are unresolved guarantees, not verified security failures.

Include this test in the unit-test run.

The test:unit command selects tests/Unit/*.test.ts. It does not select CurrentPageHistory.test.tsx, so the normal unit-test run skips this test. Rename the file to .test.ts, since it contains no JSX, or extend the test file pattern. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Rename the test containing “refreshes only stale props when restoring a cached
page” to use the .test.ts extension so the existing test:unit file pattern
discovers it; preserve the test’s contents and behavior.

@MrPunyapal, since #1458 (merged Nov 4), app.tsx calls catchUpAfterRestore() on history navigation and on pageshow with persisted, which reads every Inertia::live prop again. Several pages in historyReloads already get that:

What could make this PR smaller and easier to review:

  1. Drop the device/index, safety/edit and organization-member/index entries, and probably moderation/show. Why: those props are already read again on restore, so each back navigation would now send a second request for the same data.
  2. Keep operations/features, operations/emails and starred/index. Why: their props aren't live (Inertia::render / Inertia::scroll), so nothing refreshes them on restore today; that's the gap this PR actually fills.
  3. Also refresh those on pageshow with persisted. Why: historyReloads only runs on Inertia's navigate event, and a page restored from the browser's back/forward cache doesn't go through it, so it would keep its stale data. feat: keep the web app live across tabs and devices #1458 listens to both for that reason.
  4. Close feat: refresh operations feature flags on history restores #1401, feat: refresh email recipient estimate on history restores #1402 and feat: refresh starred commits on history restores #1403 once this covers them, as you did for feat: refresh safety mute and block lists on history restores #1399, feat: refresh organization members and roles on history restores #1400 and feat: refresh pending moderation queue on history restores #1404. Why: they duplicate entries of this PR, so keeping them open means reviewing the same change twice.

Refresh the starred page behind the photo.

When bfcache restores an open starred photo, this requests the photo URL instead of the starred URL. The response replaces the starred feed with commit/show.

@jubianchi
Thanks for pointing this out. You're right, #1458 already handles the live props.

I've updated the PR to remove the redundant refreshes, keeping only Features, Emails, and Starred. I also added support for pageshow with persisted and updated the tests.

I've closed #1401, #1402, and #1403 as they're now covered by this PR.
