perf: re-render only the commits whose dimming changes - #1479
Hovering in the log re-rendered every commit in it. The highlight lived in CommitFeed state, so each move from one commit to another re-rendered the whole log, and a log holds 1,000 commits after enough infinite scroll. The highlight now lives in a small store that each commit subscribes to, so a move re-renders only the two commits whose dimming changes. What dims, and when, stays exactly as it is.
Before: every move between commits re-rendered all 1,000 commits in the log. After: a move re-renders the two commits whose dimming changes. The same pointer, wheel and keyboard steps leave the same commits dimmed on both builds, so a wheel scroll under a still pointer still dims nothing until the pointer moves.

The peak heap was short-lived garbage from re-rendering the whole log on every move. After garbage collection both versions settle at the same size, so nothing leaks.
How it was measured
A local production build with 1,000 seeded commits on the Latest log, with its page size raised locally so all of them render at once, in headless Chromium at 1440×900. Each run sweeps the pointer up and down the visible commits six times, leaving and re-entering the log between sweeps, then scrolls with the wheel while the pointer rests on the log. Heap, JavaScript and CPU figures come from the Chrome DevTools Protocol. Browser memory is the resident size of the renderer and GPU processes, sampled every 100 ms.
Merge Danger
Door: Two-way.
Blast Radius: Log rendering.
Only how the dimming reaches each commit changes. Hover, dimming and scrolling behave as in production, and with lane dimming turned off a move between commits no longer re-renders anything.

New Features
Highlighting a commit or author in the feed dims unrelated commits, making the selected item easier to follow.
Highlighting is shared across feed cards, the pinned commit, and the interlude, so the selected item’s dimming is consistent across these areas.
Hovering or scrolling in the feed updates the active highlight.
CommitFeed now uses a shared store for author and commit highlights. Feed cards, pinned commits, and interludes subscribe to the store and receive dimming state through a shared wrapper.

Summary
Highlight state and dimming rules resources/js/lib/feed-hover.ts, tests/Unit/FeedHover.test.ts
Adds highlight state, dimming rules, and a store that notifies subscribers when highlight values change. Tests cover dimming behavior, store updates, and unsubscribe behavior.
Feed pointer and scroll tracking resources/js/components/commit-feed.tsx
CommitFeed updates the store on author and commit hover. Scroll and delayed reset handlers clear highlight values.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#892 — The store skips notifications for unchanged highlights, and feed elements subscribe to it for dimming updates. The PR does not add the virtualization requested by the issue.
Suggested reviewers:xheaven
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 84a49
The dimming value remains boolean, and scrolling does not highlight a commit until the pointer moves. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 84a49
The highlight store remains isolated to each feed and controls presentation only. The inspected changes preserve existing dimming behavior and cleanup without introducing a new security boundary or privileged operation.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed state propagation is confined to presentation within one feed instance. Sharing the store among that feed's renderers does not create cross-feed or cross-tenant state sharing.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — In the inspected transition, pointer activity selects commit and author identifiers that are compared to derive dimming. Those identifiers are not promoted into authorization decisions or privileged requests, and the existing card action props remain unchanged.

Hey! The mouse movement requirement is intentional. When you are casually scrolling the log, it's annoying when it dims everything else every time your scroll stops on something. We've got enough feedback from the users to keep it this way, so I wouldn't want to change this behavior.
However, I'd like to merge the performance improvement part. Can we make this happen?

@xHeaven Done! I dropped the post-scroll highlight and the timing tweaks, so hover and dimming behave exactly as in production and only the extra re-renders are gone.
Lane dimming only followed pointer moves, so after a wheel or trackpad scroll the commit under a still pointer stayed unlit until the mouse moved. Once such a scroll settles, the commit under the pointer now lights up, while keyboard and programmatic scrolls leave the log alone.
The highlight now lives in a small store each commit subscribes to, so moving between commits re-renders the two commits that change instead of the whole log. The hover background and the graph lines follow the same state and the same 150ms ease-out timing as the dimming. The lit commit switches off by where the mouse actually is, so late or missing leave events no longer keep it lit or switch it off.
The log waits for a pointer move again before it dims after a scroll,
as the maintainers want, so the commit under a still pointer no longer
lights up and the wheel, key and pointer tracking it needed is gone.
The hover background, the dimming and the graph lines go back to their
production timing as well.
The highlight store stays, so moving between commits still re-renders
only the commits whose dimming changes instead of the whole log.
