Summary

Opening a reply's replies read them twice: one GET /commits/{id}/replies for the click, then the same request again as soon as the thread started listening for live updates. A listener joining a channel that is already joined catches up when the channel was joined after the page was read. On a freshly loaded page every channel is joined after that, so each thread opened later read again what it had just read.

Changes

  • listen() takes an optional readAt, when what the listener follows was read, and checks for missed updates from then instead of from when the page was read.
  • useThread passes when it started reading the replies it shows. It also asks what changed since that start, rather than since shortly before the read landed, so a reply posted during a slow read still shows.
  • Replies that came with the page, or that initial replaces, still catch up from when the page was read.

Validation

  • node --experimental-strip-types --test tests/Unit/*.test.ts: passed.
  • vp test run tests/Unit/*.test.tsx: passed. In ThreadRecovery.test.tsx, "opening a thread reads its replies once" fails on production with two reads, and "a reply posted while a slow thread was opening shows once its replies land" covers the catch-up the second read used to do.
  • vp fmt --check resources/, vp lint (no new warnings), and tsc --noEmit for the app and the tests: passed.

Visual evidence

Opening a reply's replies on a commit page, signed in. Local run of production (84c5496a) and of this branch with seeded data and a Pusher-protocol server (soketi) for live updates, recorded in the T3 Code preview, Chrome 1280×800 at 2×, light theme. The panel at the bottom right lists the requests for replies made after the page loaded.

Before: two identical replies?newest=0&limit=3 requests.

Independent review

Read-only reviews by Codex (GPT 6.0 Astra) and Claude Opus of 56466de6 → 43c1c468: CODE: PASS from both, after fixes for their earlier findings. Both also reviewed f32b2c73, which moves the read marks out of render as CodeRabbit suggested: CODE: PASS. Rebased onto af8dc37a since, with the same patches (fd9514b0, 3ea2d9cb). No UI changed, so there was no visual review.

Limitations

  • A thread opened before its channels finish joining, or one that reads its replies as it mounts on a freshly loaded page, still reads them again once: a channel joined after the read can't vouch for what came in between.
  • No test covers initial replacing a just-opened thread's replies in the same render: the hook harness doesn't re-render after an update during render as React does. It was checked with React DOM instead.
  • Not checked against production's WebSocket server or on a device.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Bug Fixes

  • Improved reply updates when opening a thread, including when its realtime connection is already active.
  • Replies posted while the initial thread content is loading now appear after loading completes.
  • Realtime catch-up more accurately accounts for when thread content was read, reducing missed updates and unnecessary refreshes.
  • Reply notifications now better reflect changes that occur around the time a thread is opened or its content is loaded.

Walkthrough

The reply thread records when reply reads start and when replies are read. Realtime listeners use the recorded timestamp for catch-up checks, with the page-read time as a fallback.

Changes: Reply read-time tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-listener catch-up timestamp
resources/js/lib/commit-changes.ts, resources/js/lib/realtime.ts, tests/Unit/Realtime.test.ts
readAt accepts an optional browser-clock timestamp and converts it using the server offset and existing margin. Realtime catch-up uses the supplied timestamp when present, or pageRead otherwise. The test covers both cases.
Thread reply read tracking
resources/js/components/commit-thread.tsx, tests/Unit/ThreadRecovery.test.tsx
useThread records reply-read start times, passes them through page loading, and supplies the recorded read timestamp to listeners. Tests cover opening a thread after joining channels and receiving a reply posted during the initial request.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review f32b2

Narrow thread lifecycle paths can miss a reply until a later resubscription or perform an unnecessary replies request; fix these before relying on the new read-time tracking.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to f32b2

The inspected changes adjust when replies catch up with live updates without changing who can read them. Request ownership checks, viewer-aware reads, and reconnect recovery remain in place. No introduced or worsened security issue was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior affects reply freshness and catch-up requests for browser thread views. It retains the existing commit channel, viewer-specific relationship channel, and server read destinations; the inspected change does not add authority over other viewers or introduce a persistent-state write.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced security attack path was established through the new timestamp input. The input changes catch-up selection, while reply materialization remains a current-viewer server read and late responses remain subject to ownership guards.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Realtime visibility payloads supply reply identifiers, not replacement reply content. Reconciliation fetches those identifiers from the existing server endpoint before updating displayed replies. Relationship events likewise trigger a server reread rather than granting visibility locally.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Replacing initial props can overwrite already-reconciled local replies without rebinding an active listener, but that replacement behavior exists in the base revision. The new reset uses a backdated page baseline, not the replacement's arrival time, so the proposed new suppression window was not established. This residual ordering limitation is not retained as a PR-introduced security concern.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: read a reply thread once when it opens" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary shows that useThread now records read timestamps (repliesReadAt and the request start time) for replies fetched on open, and that listen() and readAt() accept an optional timestamp so catch-up checks start from when the replies were read. The PR objectives state the same goal: opening a thread previously read replies twice, and the change makes it read them once. The title is short, specific, and in a conventional commit format.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 5 files.

Pass the request start time through recover and loadUntil.

These paths leave repliesReadAt.current undefined. A later listener-effect rerun can then use the older pageRead value and repeat the catch-up read. Capture Date.now() before each fetch and pass it to applyPage.

Opening replies read them, then read them again as soon as the thread
started listening for live updates. A listener joining a channel that
was already joined catches up when the channel was joined after the
page was read, which on a freshly loaded page is every thread opened
later, though it had just read its replies.

The thread now tells listen() when it started reading the replies it
shows, so it only catches up on what was heard since then. It also asks
what changed since that start, rather than since shortly before the
read landed, so a reply posted during a slow read still shows.
The branch where replies the page brought replace the thread's set its read marks during render, so a render React discards could move them while the old replies stay shown. They are now set in an effect once those replies show.
