Summary

Let users amplify an approved commit with a one-click recommit that adds no text. Recommits appear on the recommitter’s profile and show a distinct “Recommitted” state and label.

Closes #869

Changes

  • Add a recommit action for approved commits.
  • Show the recommit on the author’s profile and retain its state after reload.
  • Distinguish recommits from quotes in commit cards and thread rows.
  • Prevent recommitting your own, unavailable, or already recommitted commits.
  • Align local PHP coverage settings with CI and stabilize vector-search tests.

Validation

  • composer test — passed: 5,817 PHP tests, 100% PHP line coverage, 100% type coverage, 1,065 frontend tests, and 292 Node tests.
  • git diff --check — passed.
  • Desktop Chromium, light theme, 1440×960: checked recommit, pending-review feedback, and persistence after reload.
  • Chromium mobile emulation, touch enabled, 390×844: tapped Recommit, confirmed the state after reload, and observed no horizontal overflow (scrollWidth 390px).
  • Layout shift during the click: CLS 0; one 0.000068 shift was associated with recent user input.
  • Hosted CI has not run yet.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Recommit another user’s approved post without commentary. Recommits follow standard moderation and posting limits, appear in activity logs, and are listed among the original post’s replies.
    • Recommit controls show whether a post has already been recommitted and distinguish recommits from quoted posts.
    • Receive status updates when a recommit is pending review or completed, along with notifications for newly unlocked badges.
  • Documentation
    • Updated quoting guidance to describe Recommit and clarify its availability.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change adds a recommit action for approved commits. Recommits are empty-body commits that quote the original, follow existing moderation and rate limits, and appear in commit cards and reply threads.

Changes: Recommit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Authorize, create, and restore recommits
app/Http/Requests/CreateCommitRecommitRequest.php, routes/web.php, app/Actions/CreateCommitRecommit.php, app/Http/Controllers/CommitRecommitController.php, app/Actions/CreateCommitRestoration.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/CommitRecommitControllerTest.php, tests/Unit/Actions/CreateCommitRestorationTest.php
The authenticated route applies commit rules and throttling. The request checks visibility, approval, and ownership. The action locks the source commit and rejects duplicate recommits before creating an empty-body commit that quotes it. Restoration checks for an active replacement before restoring a recommit. Tests cover rule acceptance, access restrictions, deletion, and restoration.
Load and display recommit state
app/Models/Commit.php, app/Queries/CommitBuilder.php, resources/js/types/commit.ts, resources/js/components/commit-recommit-button.tsx, resources/js/components/commit-card.tsx, resources/js/components/commit-thread.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
Commit card data includes whether the viewer has recommitted. The interface adds recommit controls and labels recommits in cards and replies. The knowledge base describes recommit behavior and updates its source references and livestream history.

Test setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure test execution
composer.json, tests/Feature/Controllers/Api/CommitSearchControllerTest.php
The unit-test command enables PHP assertions for both invocations. The commit search test setup disables PostgreSQL index scans locally.

Merge Risk: Low · up to aeab3

The PR is mergeable with owner awareness of a narrow concurrent-undo edge case and a search-test gap; neither establishes a common-path failure.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to aeab3

The new action preserves existing login, ownership, visibility, posting-limit, and moderation controls. Remaining concerns are bounded to delete-and-undo behavior: replacement conflicts are not handled consistently by callers, and concurrent undo may lose duplicate protection after the source is deleted. No new privilege escalation or private-content disclosure was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: The replacement-conflict branch returns a still-deleted commit, but both restoration callers subsequently load that ID through non-deleted scopes using findOrFail. The newly supported delete, replace, then undo sequence therefore produces not-found behavior rather than an explicit restoration-conflict outcome. This leaves the shared rollback contract inconsistent across the action, web endpoint, and API endpoint.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new at-most-one-active-recommit guarantee does not cover every undo state. If two deleted recommits for the same user and source remain within their undo windows after the source is soft-deleted, restoration no longer locks a shared source row. Under read-committed isolation, both transactions can check before either restores and then reactivate different rows. Normal creation and restoration against an active source do serialize correctly. The remaining gap affects the user's own recommit state; deployed isolation or an independently enforced uniqueness constraint could change the outcome.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced entrypoint permits an authenticated user to amplify an eligible source under their own identity, not to modify the source or choose another author. The lifecycle race is bounded to owned recommits for a shared source within their undo windows; it does not demonstrate cross-account restoration authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The examined creation and display paths do not establish a new authorization or content-visibility bypass. The restoration concerns affect lifecycle consistency and recovery rather than demonstrated access to another user's private content or privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new route shares authentication, posting-timeout prevention, rules acceptance, and the per-user posting budget with ordinary commit creation. Creation retains existing moderation status selection. Quote notifications require an approved quote and exclude deleted sources, muted actors, and relationships blocked in either direction.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Creation and restoration use transactions with up to three attempts. Restoration reloads its target under a row lock and rechecks the undo deadline; terminal content erasure uses the same target-row locking discipline. These controls protect individual records, but do not resolve the deleted-source cross-record serialization gap or the conflict-result mismatch.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep a stable serialization point throughout source soft-deletion and represent replacement conflicts explicitly in the shared restoration contract, with consistent web and API handling. Validate the invariant against concurrent restoration and cleanup under the deployed database configuration.

Add recommit authorization tests for the remaining cases.

Test that a blocked author’s approved commit returns 404. Test that a pending organization commit returns 403 to its former member who posted it. Also test an approved organization commit for a member and a nonmember.

Add coverage for index-backed term search.

These API tests disable index scans. If production uses HNSW without iterative scans, filtered or dead entries can reduce the results while these tests pass. Add a test that selects the HNSW plan and checks results with filtered nearest candidates.

Add a deterministic PostgreSQL concurrency test for recommit creation.

The source row is locked before the duplicate check and insert. The current tests do not exercise a second transaction waiting for that lock, so they can miss a regression that moves the duplicate check outside the locked transaction. Use separate PostgreSQL connections to overlap two recommit requests, then assert that one request succeeds, the other is rejected, and only one recommit exists. Make the shared fixture visible to both connections because RefreshDatabase wraps feature tests in a transaction.
