A patch release on v3.5.0. The user-facing account is .github/release-notes/v3.5.1.md (which Auto Release publishes) and the [3.5.1] CHANGELOG section; this body is the reviewer's map. The codename is provisional.
Merge this before #631 (v3.6.0), which is built on it. MiSTer half: doublegate/RustyNES_MiSTer#70.
Breaking
Emulation epoch 7 (v3.5.0 recorded 6), for the MMC5 CHR fix: v3.5.0 movies and netplay peers are refused with a message naming both epochs. Save states from v3.5.0 load; netplay protocol 9 and .rnm format 7 are unchanged.
What landed (7 commits)
fda79e56: the MMC5's split-screen and extended-attribute CHR banks apply only to fetches made while the PPU renders (NESdev MMC5 page), so a $2007 CHR read in vertical blank reads the bank registers.
5e33cf9a: the split's nametable substitution gated the same way. The MiSTer core's new $2007 stimulus found it.
6b2ef149: a key held while it is rebound is released. Every file the user names is read as a regular file only, up to 64 MiB, so a pipe or a device can no longer hang the window thread or fill memory.
60c8be29: epoch 7 (maintainer's call: no snapshot moved, but a $2007 CHR read in vblank now returns something different).
a8446a85, 9dcfaf14, d412e7e9: the plan, the cut, and the full-suite counts.
Verification (local)
cargo test --workspace --features test-roms,commercial-roms --no-fail-fast on the cut tree: 3,938 passed, 0 failed, 19 ignored across 193 binaries. The commercial suites read 60/0, 169/0 and 6/0, as at v3.5.0: no recorded output moved.
A temporary probe over 3,600 frames each of Castlevania III, Bandit Kings of Ancient China and Uchuu Keibitai SDF counted no CHR access where the old behaviour would have chosen a different bank.
The epoch-dependent tests were re-run after the epoch commit: rustynes-core lib 275/0, rustynes-netplay lib 149/0, epoch_fingerprint 2/0.
fmt, clippy for every feature set and both wasm32 builds, rustdoc -D warnings, the no_std core, markdownlint; release audits: anchors 18/0, state prose 9/0.
Not done, on purpose
No MiSTer bitstream is compiled yet: they are compiled from the sibling's release commit at release time. The sibling PR pins this branch's 5e33cf9a and moves to the merge commit after the merge.
No hardware has run any bitstream.
Since this PR opened
6d89f77abuild(deps): bump ctutils to 0.4.7 and clipboard-win to 5.4.3. The Security workflow failed on two advisory-database entries published after the cut (RUSTSEC-2026-0385 for ctutils 0.4.3; clipboard-win 5.4.1 yanked); main's own scheduled Security run fails the same way. Lockfile only.
0b6c0d52fix(frontend): release held pads and hold keys on rebind; refuse FIFOs everywhere (Antigravity's review). A rebind now also releases held gamepad buttons and the Rewind / Fast-forward hold keys; the FDS BIOS picker, the header editor, the bundle loader, dump-check and the MCP server's --rom refuse a file that is not a regular file, as the v3.5.1 notes promise. CHANGELOG and notes updated. Replies: see the review comment.
Medium Risk
Emulation epoch 7 intentionally breaks v3.5.0 movies and netplay pairing, and MMC5 $2007 behavior changes in vblank; file-open hardening touches many load paths but is bounded and tested.
Overview v3.5.1 "Reprise" is a patch on v3.5.0: MMC5 behavior, input rebinding, and safe file opens, plus emulation epoch 7 so v3.5.0 movies and netplay peers are refused (save states still load; .rnm format 7 and netplay protocol 9 unchanged).
MMC5 (Rust core and MiSTer): Split-screen and extended-attribute CHR bank overrides, and the split’s nametable substitution, now apply only while the PPU is rendering. A $2007 CHR or nametable read in vertical blank (or with rendering off) uses the normal bank registers again, matching NESdev. Epoch 7 was raised even though no golden suites moved, because games that read CHR via $2007 in vblank could replay differently without a guard.
Frontend: Rebinding clears every held keyboard-mapped input, gamepad buttons, and Rewind/Fast-forward hold keys so releases still match the new map. User-chosen paths go through bounded_read: non-regular files (FIFOs, devices, symlinks to them) are rejected before open, with a 64 MiB cap (TAStudio projects use a separate 1 GiB limit aligned on save). Same rules extend to bundles, verify/speedrun, header editor, dump-check, and MCP --rom.
CI / housekeeping: Shared-memory IPC tests run on Windows and macOS in full CI; minor lockfile bumps (ctutils, clipboard-win); workspace version 3.5.1 and release docs.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
MMC5 split-screen and extended-attribute CHR substitutions now apply only during rendering, with normal bank selection used outside rendering and during vertical blank.
Rebinding controls releases held inputs, including keyboard and gamepad buttons.
Opening files now rejects devices and pipes, and limits supported file reads to 64 MiB.
Compatibility
Version 3.5.0 movies and netplay peers are not compatible with this release. Version 3.5.0 save states remain loadable; the netplay protocol and .rnm format are unchanged.
T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK, found in the v3.5.0 sibling review as a question
about both cores: the split's $5202 bank (`split_chr_bank_latch`) and an
ExGrafix tile's 4 KiB bank (`ex_chr_bank_latch`) are latched at each
background nametable fetch, and `chr_offset` applied whichever was set to
EVERY non-sprite CHR access. Nothing clears them when a frame ends, so a
$2007 read of CHR in vertical blank, or with rendering switched off in
$2001, read the bank of the last tile drawn instead of the bank
registers.
The NESdev MMC5 page (nesdev_wiki/MMC5.xhtml) settles which side is
right. It describes both overrides as substitutions to background
fetches while the PPU renders: "When the PPU is rendering in the split
region, the MMC5 replaces the normal nametable data", and in extended
attribute mode "CHR banking behaves differently than normal when
fetching background tiles from pattern tables". For $2007 it gives a
different rule: "the last set of registers written to (either
$5120-$5127 or $5128-$512B) will be used for I/O via PPUDATA ($2007)".
The page also names the software that depends on it: Bandit Kings of
Ancient China and Uchuu Keibitai SDF "have non-pattern data stored in
CHR ROM, read out via $2007", and the Koei games "use extended
attributes continuously". So the oracle was wrong, not the page.
The fix gates both overrides on the predicate the model already uses to
tell a rendering fetch from a $2007 access: `render_window &&
ppu_rendering` (the background-fetch window opened at dot 0 of the
pre-render and each visible line and closed at vertical blank, with the
snooped $2001 render enables), the one `non_sprite_set` uses for the 8x16
B-set choice. Outside it the access falls through to
`chr_set_offset(addr, non_sprite_set(read))`, the page's $2007 set. The
latches stay set (the next frame's fetches overwrite them before use);
only their application is gated.
The trap avoided: gating on `in_frame` instead looks equivalent and is
wrong. The page's in-frame flag is set by the first scanline detection,
near dot 4 of visible line 0, but line 0's first two tiles are
prefetched on the pre-render line's dots 321-336, before it, so those
tiles would lose their ExGrafix bank. `render_window` opens at the
pre-render line's dot 0 and covers the prefetch.
Tests, written red first (both failed on the pre-fix code at the
assertion after vertical blank / after $2001 = 0):
- an_exgrafix_latch_does_not_reach_a_vblank_chr_read: an ExGrafix tile's
bank applies while rendering (1 KiB bank 12) and not after
notify_vblank, where the read matches the unsubstituted set; the
fixture asserts the two banks differ so the test cannot pass vacuously.
- a_split_latch_does_not_reach_a_chr_read_outside_rendering: the split's
bank applies while rendering, not with $2001 rendering off mid-frame,
again when rendering resumes, and not after vertical blank.
Five existing tests made background fetches with no rendering state at
all (a fresh mapper); they now enter rendering first, which is what
they model.
Does it move anything recorded? Measured, not argued:
- test-roms + commercial-roms, run on this change: external_real_games
60/0 (Castlevania III, Bandit Kings and Uchuu Keibitai SDF among
them), external_extended 169/0, external_coverage 6/0,
epoch_fingerprint 2/0, mmc5 3/0, mmc5_scanline_irq 4/0. No snapshot
and no fingerprint moved.
- A temporary probe (removed before this commit; the file was restored
from a snapshot) counted every CHR access where the pre-fix latch would
have chosen a different bank, over 3,600 frames of each of those three
games with Start and A pulsed every 240 frames: 0, 0 and 0.
So EMULATION_EPOCH stays 6: the rule's trigger is a moved golden or
snapshot, and none moved. The residual risk is stated rather than
hidden: a v3.5.0 movie of a Koei game that reaches a screen reading CHR
through $2007 in vertical blank after an extended-attribute frame would
replay differently; none of the measured play reaches one.
Verified: rustynes-mappers lib 1,113 passed, 0 failed; clippy -D
warnings on rustynes-mappers --all-targets; the thumbv7em no_std build of
rustynes-core. docs/mappers.md's MMC5 CHR-set paragraph states the rule
and what changed. The sibling's mmc5.sv has the same defect and is fixed
on its own branch against this commit.

T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE: the Antigravity suggestions on #624 not taken at
v3.5.0, each confirmed with a failing test or refuted. Three are here.
1. A key held across a rebind stayed held for good (confirmed).
`InputState::reload_bindings` replaced the key map and kept every
held flag. A key down while its binding moved (Power Pad mat button
4 on F, rebound to Y, F still held) set its bit under the old map;
its release, looked up in the new map, no longer named that position,
so the bit stayed set until the app restarted. The same held for the
controller keys, both Hyper Shots and the microphone, and in the app
for the Family BASIC matrix, which `App` keeps itself.
Fix: `reload_bindings` releases every keyboard-held input
(`keyboard_buttons`, `power_pad`, both Hyper Shot masks,
`microphone`) before swapping the map, and the app clears
`family_keyboard` on the same dirty-flag path. Gamepad state is left
alone: its map is separate and not part of a key rebind. The next key
event re-establishes what is really down, so the only cost is that a
key held through a rebind must be pressed again.
Test: `a_rebind_releases_what_the_old_binding_held` (mat button and
microphone held, both rebound, both released under the old keys).
Mutation: removing the five releases makes it FAIL; restored from a
snapshot.
2. Every user-named file was read whole with no bound (confirmed).
ROM, IPS/BPS/UPS patch, FDS BIOS, .rnm movie, foreign movie, TAS
project, symbol file, source map, Lua script, palette, splits file,
per-game sidecar, and the CLI's `verify` and `speedrun` inputs all
went through bare `std::fs::read` / `read_to_string`. Two kinds of
path break that: a FIFO blocks in `open` until a writer appears (the
window thread with it), and a character device such as `/dev/zero`,
named `game.nes` or reached through a symlink, streams for ever until
allocation fails. `metadata().len()` is 0 for both, so a length check
alone passes them, which is why the bundle loader's v3.5.0
`read_bounded` bounds the READ.
Fix: a shared `bounded_read` module. `read_limited` refuses a
non-regular file from `fs::metadata` (which follows symlinks, so the
target is judged) before opening anything, then reads at most
limit+1 bytes and refuses if the extra byte arrived; `read` /
`read_to_string` apply 64 MiB, far above any NES image, movie, script
or palette. 22 call sites now use it; the bundle's plain-ROM branch
too. Deliberately NOT changed: files the app writes itself in its data
directory (the FDS disk save, the RA progress sidecar, cheats, save
states, config), which no user path names.
Tests: a regular file, the limit's edge (16 refused at 17 bytes, 17
accepted), a directory, `/dev/zero` and a symlink to it, and a FIFO
made with `mkfifo` (refused without blocking; the test would hang
if the metadata check were gone). Mutation: disabling the regular-file
check makes the device test FAIL (run alone, since the FIFO test
would block); restored from a snapshot.
3. `lua_eval` from the MCP server during a real-time run (refuted).
Each runner frame takes the session mutex (`host.rs`, the
mcp-realtime thread) and every tool call takes the same one, so an
eval sees a single frame boundary and the runner waits; the breach
check compares two snapshots taken under that lock, so a running
machine cannot read as a breach; the runner's "fell behind: run on
rather than burst" path absorbs the stall. Pinned rather than argued:
`real_time_running_pauses_and_stops_at_breakpoints` now evaluates Lua
mid-run and asserts `ok` with `state_unchanged`, and its existing
`movie_verify` afterwards proves the run's journal still replays.
The two sibling items (the dead `x_hit_q`, the ungated `nt_ovr`/IRQ)
are on the sibling's own v3.5.1 branch.
Verified: rustynes-frontend lib 780 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored (the 18
new/affected tests by name); rustynes-mcp all test targets pass; cargo
fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for --workspace --all-targets and
rustynes-frontend with scripting, scripting+hd-pack, retroachievements
and full, plus both wasm32 invocations (run through a Python driver:
an earlier zsh loop passed each argument list as ONE word, so its
"clean" results had run nothing); RUSTDOCFLAGS=-D warnings cargo doc
--workspace.

The v3.5.1 plan (to-dos/plans/v3.5.1-plan.md), written as the work was
done rather than ahead of it, and the records the two fix commits
(fda79e5, the MMC5 overrides; 6b2ef14, the rebind and file-read
residue) leave behind.
- The plan states the branch point and its consequence: the maintainer
asked for v3.5.1 to be committed and not pushed, so v3.6.0 is built on
this branch, which must therefore merge first, and a review change here
means rebasing v3.6.0.
- What the MMC5 fix moves, measured: the commercial and epoch suites
pass with no snapshot or fingerprint moved, and a temporary probe found
0 accesses in 3,600 frames of each of the three local MMC5 games where
the old latch would have chosen another bank. EMULATION_EPOCH stays 6;
the residual risk (a Koei screen reading CHR through $2007 after an
extended-attribute frame, which the measured play never reaches) is
written down rather than left implicit.
- One verdict per T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE suggestion: two confirmed and
fixed, one refuted and pinned by a test, the two sibling items with
the sibling's own branch.
- ROADMAP: T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK's oracle half, T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI (its
closing run, CI 40042068313, named) and T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE closed.
- CHANGELOG [Unreleased] gains a Fixed section with the three fixes in
user terms.
Verified: markdownlint on the three files; release_anchor_audit 18/0,
release_notes_render_audit 14/0, release_state_prose_audit 9/0 and
contribution_checklist_audit 4/0.

The version bump, the anchors and the release notes for v3.5.1, a patch
release on v3.5.0 "Chorus": the MMC5's split-screen and
extended-attribute CHR banks apply only while the PPU renders (in both
cores; the sibling's half is on its own feat/v3.5.1 branch), a key held
while it is rebound is released, user-named files are read with a bound
and devices and pipes refused, and the rest of the v3.5.0 review's
residue is settled.
The codename "Reprise" is provisional: the maintainer chooses codenames
at the cut and was not asked this time (the request was to work through
without stopping). It was checked unused in CHANGELOG.md and
CHANGELOG-FULL.md. Renaming it is one CHANGELOG header, the notes title,
the VERSION-PLAN row and the anchors bump_release.py wrote.
bump_release.py --apply moved every anchor it owns (Cargo.toml and both
lockfiles, the cosim crate, the libretro .info display_version, Android's
versionCode, the iOS project, the hosted Worker's package files and
RA_USER_AGENT, and the prose anchors in AGENTS, ARCHITECTURE, OVERVIEW,
README, ROADMAP, SECURITY, SUPPORT and STATUS), with the lead sentence
describing v3.5.1 and v3.5.0's demoted to "Built on". By hand:
- the CHANGELOG [3.5.1] section header (the entries were already under
[Unreleased]; the heading is kept, empty, as the audit requires);
- to-dos/ROADMAP.md's release-line sentence: v3.5.0 loses "the current
release", v3.5.1 gains it (the tool refuses without a written entry);
- VERSION-PLAN.md: the forward-table row, and the release table's
"(current)" marker moved from v3.5.0 to a new v3.5.1 row
(release_anchor_audit failed until it moved, which is its job);
- .github/release-notes/v3.5.1.md, in v3.4.2's shape: what was fixed in
user terms, what the MMC5 fix changes in recorded play (measured:
nothing moved, a probe found no affected access, epoch stays 6, the
residual risk named), what the review residue settled, the MiSTer
section (bitstreams compiled from the sibling's release commit at
release time, not now: a compile today would carry an earlier date
than the release), verification and install.
Compatibility: emulation epoch 6, netplay protocol 9, .rnm format 7 and
every save-state section unchanged from v3.5.0; no format moves.
Verified on this tree: release_anchor_audit 18/0,
release_state_prose_audit 9/0, release_notes_render_audit 14/0,
contribution_checklist_audit 4/0, libretro_info_audit 6/0;
pre-release.sh reports the notes reflowed (911 words) and the CHANGELOG
shape right. The full workspace suite with test-roms and commercial-roms
is running on this tree; its counts go into docs/STATUS.md in the commit
after this one.
NOT pushed, by the maintainer's instruction (2026-10-23). v3.6.0 is
being built on this branch.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_014qfTKi2M3swo7qnwvYCkDj
The v3.5.1 cut kept EMULATION_EPOCH at 6 on a reading of the bump rule's
stated trigger: no golden, snapshot or epoch fingerprint moved under the
MMC5 fix (fda79e5), and a temporary probe found no affected CHR access
in 3,600 frames each of Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Uchuu Keibitai SDF
and Castlevania III. The maintainer decided otherwise (2026-10-23): the
fix changes what a $2007 CHR read in vertical blank returns, which is a
bus value the rule's first sentence covers ("a different framebuffer,
audio sample or bus cycle from the same inputs"), and a v3.5.0 movie of
a game that makes that read would replay differently with no warning.
Raising the epoch turns that silent divergence into a refusal that
names both epochs. It is the stricter reading of the rule and matches
the maintainer's standing preference for enduring correctness over
compatibility.
BREAKING CHANGE: movies recorded on v3.5.0 (epoch 6) and v3.5.0 netplay
peers are refused by v3.5.1 (epoch 7), with MovieError's / the
handshake's epoch-mismatch reason. Re-record movies under v3.5.1 and
keep both netplay peers on the same release. Save states do not carry
the epoch (it is recorded only in movies, the netplay handshake, the
BK2/legacy import paths and the memory-export header) and load as
before; netplay protocol 9 and .rnm format 7 are unchanged.
- hardware_options.rs: EMULATION_EPOCH = 7 and its table row, which says
that no recorded output moved and why the epoch rose anyway.
- golden/epoch_fingerprint.tsv: `# epoch 7` and `# last_release_epoch 7`.
docs/agents/ci-and-release.md requires the cut to set
last_release_epoch to the shipped epoch; v3.5.0's cut left it at 5
(one release behind its own epoch, 6), so this also corrects that slip.
The panel's fingerprints are unchanged; only the header moves.
- CHANGELOG [3.5.1] gains a Breaking section; the release notes' first
paragraph and their "what the MMC5 fix changes in recorded play"
section, both VERSION-PLAN rows and the v3.5.1 plan now say epoch 7 and
why, instead of "stays 6".
Verified, in a separate target directory (the full ROM suite holds this
tree's lock): rustynes-core lib 275/0, rustynes-netplay lib 149/0,
epoch_fingerprint (test-roms) 2/0; markdownlint on the four changed
documents. The full workspace ROM suite running on this branch started
before this commit; the epoch is not part of any recorded output, so its
counts stand.

`cargo test --workspace --features test-roms,commercial-roms
--no-fail-fast` on the v3.5.1 cut tree (9dcfaf1): 3,938 passed,
0 failed, 19 ignored across 193 test binaries and doc-test runs
(v3.5.0: 3,920 / 0 / 19 across 193). The commercial suites read 60/0
(external_real_games), 169/0 (external_extended) and 6/0
(external_coverage), as at v3.5.0: no recorded output moved.
Eight of the +18 are named in this release's commits (two MMC5 latch
tests, the rebind release test, five bounded_read tests); the other ten
were not itemised by binary, so they are counted, not attributed.
The run started before the epoch commit (60c8be2). The epoch is not
part of any recorded output, and the tests that read it were re-run
after that commit in a separate target directory: rustynes-core lib
275/0, rustynes-netplay lib 149/0, epoch_fingerprint 2/0.

T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK, the nametable half. fda79e5 made the MMC5's split
($5202) and ExGrafix CHR-bank overrides apply only inside the
rendering-fetch predicate (`render_window && ppu_rendering`, the one the
B-set choice uses), because the NESdev MMC5 page describes both as
substitutions to background fetches while the PPU renders and gives $2007
"the last set of registers written to". It left the split's other
substitution untouched: `nametable_fetch` returned ExRAM whenever
`split_chr_bank_latch` was set, and the latch survives the frame (it is
cleared only by the next nametable fetch outside the split region).
So a $2007 nametable read after a split frame - in vertical blank, or
inside the next frame with $2001 rendering off - read the split's ExRAM
byte instead of the table $5105 maps there. `peek_nametable`, the $2007
path, goes through `nametable_fetch`, so it inherited the latch. The page
gives the substitution only "when the PPU is rendering in the split
region", so this is the same oracle defect as the CHR half.
How it was found: the MiSTer sibling's new v3.5.1 stimulus,
`mapper5latch490`, reads CHR and the nametable through $2007 after a split
frame and an ExGrafix frame. Its goldens, exported black-box from the
oracle at both 5d441f4 and fda79e5, showed $0B $47 $83 at $2005 / $2123 /
$23C1 where CIRAM holds $05 $23 $C1. The sibling RTL matched the oracle,
so its gate was held back until the oracle moved; it follows this commit
with the pin.
The fix gates the split branch of `nametable_fetch` on the same predicate
as `chr_offset`. The latch itself is left set, as the CHR half leaves it:
the next frame's fetches overwrite it before use.
Tests:
- New `a_split_latch_does_not_reach_a_nametable_read_outside_rendering`
failed first ("rendering off mid-frame": Some(0xC3) for None), then
passes; it checks rendering, rendering off mid-frame, rendering back on,
and vertical blank.
- `split_nametable_fetch_reads_exram_when_active` made its split fetch
without rendering on; it now opens the rendering window first, which is
what it models (the sixth such test; fda79e5 adjusted five).
- rustynes-mappers 1,114 passed, 0 failed.
- test-roms + commercial-roms (release): external_real_games 60/0,
external_extended 169/0, external_coverage 6/0, epoch_fingerprint 2/0,
mmc5 3/0, mmc5_scanline_irq 4/0. No snapshot or fingerprint moved:
real games make this read only inside rendering, if at all.
- clippy -D warnings clean for rustynes-mappers (all targets).
The emulation epoch is already 7 for this release (60c8be2), so it does
not rise again; v3.5.0 movies are refused either way.
Docs in the same change: docs/mappers.md (the override paragraph), the
CHANGELOG [3.5.1] Fixed entry, the v3.5.1 release notes, the ROADMAP row
and the v3.5.1 plan.

MMC5 split-screen and ExGrafix CHR overrides, and split nametable substitutions, apply only during rendering fetches. Tests cover rendering, disabled rendering, and vertical blank. The emulation epoch advances from 6 to 7.
Clear held inputs on binding reload crates/rustynes-frontend/src/input.rs, crates/rustynes-frontend/src/app.rs, CHANGELOG.md
Binding reloads clear held keyboard and gamepad inputs, hold-key states, expansion-device masks, microphone state, and the native Family BASIC keyboard matrix. Tests cover the release behavior.
Native file reads reject non-regular files and files over 64 MiB by default. TAStudio project loading and saving use a separate 1 GiB limit. Frontend and command-line loading paths use bounded reads or reject non-regular files before opening.
Version identifiers advance to v3.5.1. Release documents describe the epoch compatibility change, release behavior, verification, and distribution. The MCP gate test checks read-only Lua evaluation during real-time execution.
doublegate/RustyNES#624: PR #624 introduced the emulation epoch and MMC5 fetch-window behavior that this release updates.
doublegate/RustyNES#625: PR #630 records outcomes for the Windows and macOS CI tests and roadmap tickets added by PR #625.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 61a77
This release limits MMC5 bank and nametable substitutions to rendering. Two narrow gaps remain: a rare MMC5 edge case on the post-render line, already deferred to v3.6.1, and a silent failure when saving a TAStudio project over 1 GiB. Neither blocks the release, but the owner should be aware of both.

This PR cuts the v3.5.1 "Reprise" patch release, gating MMC5 split-screen and ExGrafix CHR and nametable substitutions on active PPU rendering (bumping EMULATION_EPOCH to 7), releasing held keyboard/gamepad/system inputs across live rebinds, and bounding user-chosen file reads while rejecting non-regular files such as FIFOs and device nodes.

Suggestions
load_pal_file (config.rs): While the interactive palette pickers in app.rs and settings_panel.rs now go through bounded_read::read, startup/config palette loading in load_pal_file still calls std::fs::File::open(path) before .take(192). Its doc comment notes that path is user-supplied and could be a FIFO, which will still block in File::open unless checked with regular_file_metadata (note that load_pal_file_reads_only_what_a_palette_needs currently tests /dev/zero expecting Ok rather than an InvalidInput refusal).
overwrite_header (header_editor.rs): read_header_bytes now validates regular_file_metadata(path) before opening, but overwrite_header opens path directly with OpenOptions::new().write(true).open(path) and only checks file.metadata()?.len() < HEADER_LEN as u64. Checking regular_file_metadata(path) before opening for write as well avoids blocking if the path was replaced between load and save.
Nitpicks
resolve_from_paths (per_game.rs): The sibling <rom-stem>.json read on line 233 was switched to crate::bounded_read::read(&sibling), while the config-dir overlay read immediately above it on line 222 still uses std::fs::read(path). Using crate::bounded_read::read for both keeps the two branches symmetric.

Suggestions
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/config.rs:1357-1367 (load_pal_file): palette_for_config (crates/rustynes-frontend/src/app.rs:641-645) loads the user-configured [graphics] palette_file path via load_pal_file. Although the comment at config.rs:1359-1361 mentions FIFOs, load_pal_file calls std::fs::File::open(path) directly before .take(192), which will still block on open if palette_file points to a FIFO. Guarding load_pal_file with crate::bounded_read::regular_file_metadata(path) before File::open (and updating the /dev/zero test at config.rs:3038-3048 the same way dump_check.rs and bundle.rs were updated) would close that path too.
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/app.rs:7328-7330 and crates/rustynes-frontend/src/debugger/settings_panel.rs:1092-1094: Both palette pickers read up to 64 MiB via crate::bounded_read::read(&path) only to pass the buffer into crate::config::parse_pal, which uses the first 192 bytes. Delegating to crate::config::load_pal_file(&path) (with the regular_file_metadata check above) would cap the read at 192 bytes.
Nitpicks
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/debugger/header_editor.rs:389-397 (overwrite_header): read_header_bytes checks crate::bounded_read::regular_file_metadata(path) before opening, but overwrite_header opens the path for writing before checking file.metadata(). Calling regular_file_metadata(path)? in overwrite_header as well would avoid blocking if the file was replaced between load and save.

Bumps the release to v3.5.1 "Reprise", gating MMC5 split-screen and ExGrafix CHR/nametable substitutions on active PPU rendering (bumping EMULATION_EPOCH to 7), clearing held input state across live binding reloads, and replacing unguarded std::fs::read / File::open calls on user-chosen paths with a 64 MiB regular-file reader.
Blocking issues
None found.
Suggestions
bounded_read.rs: regular_file_metadata(path) followed by std::fs::File::open(path) in read_limited checks the path by name before opening, leaving a TOCTOU window if the path changes between metadata and open. Re-checking file.metadata()?.is_file() on the opened File handle (and on Unix, opening with O_NONBLOCK if you want to prevent blocking on a FIFO swapped in between calls) would close that window.
input.rs: InputState::reload_bindings preserves self.gamepad_axis, but reload_bindings is also triggered when the user adjusts the stick deadzone slider in input_rebind_panel.rs. If a drifting stick has already latched a D-pad bit in gamepad_axis and the user raises axis_deadzone above the drift threshold without new AxisChanged events firing, the direction stays latched. Clearing self.gamepad_axis = [Buttons::empty(); 4] in reload_bindings avoids leaving drift latched after a deadzone change.
per_game.rs and hdpack.rs / hd_audio.rs: While the sibling <rom>.json read in per_game.rs was moved to bounded_read::read, the config-dir overlay read right above it (per_game.rs:222) and user-selected HD pack archives/folders loaded from the file picker in app.rs still call std::fs::File::open / std::fs::read directly without regular-file checks or per-file size caps on folder assets.
Nitpicks
main.rs: read_rom_file in rustynes-mcp duplicates MAX_USER_FILE and read_limited from bounded_read.rs.

This PR cuts release v3.5.1 "Reprise" (EMULATION_EPOCH = 7), gating MMC5 split-screen and ExGrafix CHR/nametable latches on active PPU rendering, bounding user-selected file reads in the desktop frontend to 64 MiB regular files, clearing held input state when rebinding controls, and rejecting unknown or missing CLI arguments in rustynes-mcp.

Suggestions
Idle post-render scanline 240 leaves Mmc5::render_window set (m005_mmc5.rs, m005_mmc5.rs, ppu.rs): Mmc5::notify_scanline_start sets self.render_window = true on visible and pre-render scanlines, and Mmc5::notify_vblank only clears it at scanline 241 dot 1 (and is skipped altogether on frames where VBL is suppressed by a $2002 read race via suppress_vbl_this_frame in ppu.rs). Because Ppu::is_render_scanline is false on post-render scanline 240, a CPU $2007 read on scanline 240 takes the non-rendering Ppu::read_vram path while self.render_window && self.ppu_rendering is still true, allowing a stale ex_chr_bank_latch or split_chr_bank_latch from scanline 239 to affect the read. Clearing render_window at the end of scanline 239 (or when scanline_irq_in_frame drops on missing PPU reads) would close this window.
Debugger Mmc5::ppu_peek still routes through per-tile latches when paused mid-scanline: Mmc5::ppu_peek calls Mmc5::chr_offset with is_bg = true. When paused in VBlank (render_window == false), the new gate keeps ex_chr_bank_latch and split_chr_bank_latch from overriding the CHR view, but when paused on a visible scanline (render_window && ppu_rendering), ppu_peek still maps all $0000-$1FFF debugger reads through whichever 4 KiB bank the last tile fetch latched. Bypassing the transient per-tile latches in ppu_peek would keep the CHR viewer consistent during mid-frame breakpoints.
Verify file.metadata() on the opened descriptor in bounded_read and header_editor.rs: Calling std::fs::metadata(path) before File::open(path) avoids blocking inside open() on a named pipe, but leaves a path-swap window between metadata(path) and File::open(path) (and overwrite_header opens path for writing without re-checking is_file()). Checking file.metadata()?.is_file() on the opened File handle before reading or writing would close the gap between the path check and descriptor use.
Nitpicks
crates/rustynes-mcp/src/main.rs: --rom= (empty inline value) returns UsageError::MissingPath("--rom"), whereas --rom "" (two arguments) accepts the empty string and returns Ok(Config { rom: Some(PathBuf::from("")) }). Checking path.is_empty() in the two-argument --rom branch would make both forms fail consistently at argument parsing.

This PR cuts the v3.5.1 "Reprise" maintenance release, gating MMC5 split-screen and ExRAM mode-1 CHR/nametable latches behind active PPU rendering (bumping EMULATION_EPOCH to 7), clearing held keyboard/expansion button state on live input rebind, capping user-facing frontend file reads at 64 MiB, and adding an MCP lua_eval test assertion.
Blocking issues

Suggestions
Incomplete held-state reset in InputState::reload_bindings:reload_bindings clears keyboard_buttons, power_pad, konami_hyper_shot, bandai_hyper_shot, and microphone, but leaves gamepad_buttons (input.rs:958), rewind_held (input.rs:963), and fast_forward_held (input.rs:964) untouched even though self.gamepad_maps and self.bindings.system are rebuilt in the same call. Rebinding a held gamepad button or the Rewind/FastForward system key will miss the subsequent release lookup in InputState::set_gamepad_button or InputState::handle_system_key and leave that state latched.
Post-open metadata check in bounded_read::read_limited:std::fs::metadata(path) is checked before std::fs::File::open(path) (which helps avoid blocking on FIFOs at open time), but the opened File handle itself is not re-checked with file.metadata()?.is_file() before take(...).read_to_end(...). Checking file.metadata() on the opened descriptor closes the TOCTOU window between metadata(path) and File::open(path) and allows pre-rejecting files whose reported length already exceeds limit without reading limit + 1 bytes into memory first.
Debugger PPU nametable peek while paused mid-split-tile in Mmc5::nametable_fetch:SystemBus::debug_peek_ppu calls self.cartridge.nametable_fetch(addr, &self.vram). If execution pauses mid-scanline while self.render_window && self.ppu_rendering && self.split_chr_bank_latch.is_some(), a side-effect-free debugger peek on any nametable address $2000..=$3EFF will read from ExRAM via the split-screen branch instead of the nametable mapped at addr. Consider separating pure debug nametable inspection from the active-fetch split-latch path.
Nitpicks
Contradictory doc comment on InputState::reload_bindings: Line 984 still states /// Held-button state and the pad-to-player assignment are preserved. directly above the new code that clears held keyboard and expansion buttons.

This PR cuts release v3.5.1 ("Reprise"), gating MMC5 split-screen and ExGrafix CHR/nametable substitutions on active PPU rendering (bumping EMULATION_EPOCH to 7), clearing held keyboard inputs across rebinds, and replacing bare std::fs::read calls on user-selected files with a regular-file check and a 64 MiB read cap.
Blocking issues

Suggestions
Held gamepad buttons and system hold-keys (Rewind / FastForward) can still stick across a rebind:InputState::reload_bindings clears keyboard_buttons and device masks, but it also replaces self.gamepad_maps and self.bindings.system without clearing self.gamepad_buttons, self.rewind_held, or self.fast_forward_held. Because InputState::set_gamepad_button and InputState::handle_key resolve the release event through the new maps, a physical gamepad button or Rewind/FastForward key held while rebound will never clear its latched state on release.
Several user-picked or manifest-referenced file paths still open without a regular-file check:
bundle::read_bounded, dump_check::read_capped, and rustynes-mcpparse_args check metadata(path)?.len() before File::open, but do not check !meta.is_file(), so a .rnbundle manifest (or slot path inside one) or --rom pointing to a FIFO still blocks indefinitely in open, and /dev/zero still allocates 64 MiB before failing. They could delegate to bounded_read::read_limited.
In the desktop UI, browsing for an FDS BIOS in settings_panel.rs and opening a ROM in header_editor::read_header_bytes call std::fs::File::open directly without checking is_file(), which will still block the window thread on a FIFO.
allow_opposing_directions_passes_both_through no longer tests reload_bindings's SOCD update: In input.rs, s.reload_bindings(&cfg) now wipes keyboard_buttons, so the subsequent assert!(s.player1().is_empty(), "reload re-enables cleaning") passes trivially because no keys remain held, not because SOCD cleaning was re-enabled. Re-press ArrowLeft and ArrowRight (or check s.clean_directions(Buttons::LEFT | Buttons::RIGHT)) after the reload.
Nitpicks
InputState::reload_bindings: The doc comment still says "Held-button state and the pad-to-player assignment are preserved", which contradicts the new implementation right below it.
bounded_read::too_large: Integer division limit / (1024 * 1024) formats any sub-MiB limit passed to the public read_limited function as "larger than 0 MiB".

The Security workflow on the release PR failed on two advisory-database
entries that appeared after the cut, not on anything this branch
changed. main's own scheduled Security run (2026-10-26) fails the same
way.
- RUSTSEC-2026-0385 (2026-10-23), ctutils 0.4.3: non-constant-time
mask generation and u128 comparisons; fixed in >= 0.4.4. It reaches
the lockfile only through `digest`; `cargo tree -i ctutils --target
all` matches no package, so it appears to sit behind a `digest`
feature this build does not enable. Bumped anyway, because cargo
audit and cargo deny read the lockfile, not the build graph.
- clipboard-win 5.4.1 is yanked (cargo deny `yanked` error). It is
Windows-only, via arboard in rustynes-frontend.
`cargo update -p ctutils -p clipboard-win`: two patch-level moves, both
resolved against the Rust 1.99 pin, 4 lines of Cargo.lock. Nothing else
moved.
Verified locally: `cargo deny check advisories` ok; `cargo audit` reports
no vulnerability; `cargo check --workspace --all-targets --locked`
clean. Not verified locally: clipboard-win builds on Windows only, so
its build is the release/* PR's windows-latest leg.

…s everywhere
Two of v3.5.1's own fixes stopped short of what its release notes say,
both found by Antigravity on #630.
Rebind. `reload_bindings` released the keyboard-held state, but the same
call also replaces `gamepad_maps` and `bindings.system`. A gamepad button
held through the rebind was released through `set_gamepad_button`, which
looks the button up in the NEW map, so its old NES bit stayed set; the
Rewind and Fast-forward hold keys latched the same way through
`handle_system_key`. The reload now clears `gamepad_buttons`, `rewind_held`
and `fast_forward_held` too. `gamepad_axis` is deliberately kept: the left
stick's mapping is fixed rather than taken from `gamepad_maps`, so a stick
still deflected would otherwise read as centred until it moved. The doc
comment, which still said held state is preserved, now says what is.
Regular files. The notes promise that every file the app opens at the
user's request refuses a non-regular file, the FDS BIOS included. The
settings panel's BIOS picker and the header editor's 16-byte read called
`File::open` directly, so a named pipe still blocked the window thread in
`open` there. The bundle loader, `dump-check` and the MCP server's `--rom`
bounded the read but never checked the file type, so a FIFO blocked them
too. `bounded_read::regular_file_metadata` is the shared check; the four
frontend sites call it before opening, and `rustynes-mcp` (its own crate)
checks `is_file()` inline. `read_limited` uses the same helper.
Also:
- `allow_opposing_directions_passes_both_through` passed trivially after
the reload began releasing keys (nothing held, so an empty mask). It now
presses both directions again and checks `clean_directions` as well.
- `too_large` printed "0 MiB" for a sub-MiB limit; it prints bytes unless
the limit is a whole number of MiB (every caller's is).
- The bundle and dump-check `/dev/zero` tests now expect the earlier
not-a-regular-file refusal rather than the size cut-off.
Not changed, with the reason given on the PR: re-checking the opened
descriptor's metadata cannot close the window agy described, because the
block happens inside `open` itself; and the debugger's nametable peek
during a split tile returning ExRAM predates this release (the v3.5.1 gate
makes it rarer, not new).
Verified: new `a_rebind_releases_held_gamepad_buttons_and_hold_keys` and
`header_editor::a_fifo_is_refused_without_blocking`; each of the three new
reload lines removed in turn fails the first (3/3 caught). rustynes-frontend
783 passed, 1 ignored; rustynes-mcp passes. clippy -D warnings clean for
the workspace, default/scripting/scripting+hd-pack/retroachievements/full,
and both wasm32 builds; rustdoc clean. CHANGELOG and the v3.5.1 notes
updated (scope of both fixes, frontend count 780 -> 783).

Brings v3.5.1's #630 review fixes (0b6c0d5) into v3.6.0: held gamepad
buttons and the Rewind / Fast-forward hold keys are released on a
rebind, and the FDS BIOS picker, the header editor, the bundle loader,
dump-check and the MCP server's --rom refuse a file that is not a
regular file. The merge was clean; the CHANGELOG hunk lands in the

Antigravity's two rounds on this PR, answered point by point. Fixed in 0b6c0d52 (each claim checked at the cited line first; CHANGELOG and the v3.5.1 notes updated to match).
Fixed
Held gamepad buttons and the Rewind / Fast-forward hold keys across a rebind (both rounds). Confirmed: reload_bindings rebuilds gamepad_maps and bindings.system but kept gamepad_buttons, rewind_held and fast_forward_held, so the release was looked up in the new map and the old state stayed latched. All three are now cleared. gamepad_axis is deliberately kept: the left stick's mapping is fixed, not taken from gamepad_maps, so clearing it would read a stick that is still deflected as centred. New test a_rebind_releases_held_gamepad_buttons_and_hold_keys; removing each of the three new lines in turn fails it (3/3).
The doc comment that still said held state is preserved now says what is released and what is kept.
Readers that skipped the regular-file check (round 1). Confirmed, and it mattered more than a suggestion: the v3.5.1 notes promise the check for every file opened at the user's request, the FDS BIOS included, and the BIOS picker and the header editor opened the path directly. Both now go through bounded_read::regular_file_metadata, as do the bundle loader and dump-check; the MCP server's --rom (its own crate) checks is_file() inline. New header_editor::a_fifo_is_refused_without_blocking; the two /dev/zero tests now expect the earlier refusal.
allow_opposing_directions_passes_both_through passing trivially (round 1). Confirmed: after the reload released keys, nothing was held. It now presses both directions again and checks clean_directions too.
too_large saying "0 MiB" (round 1). It prints bytes unless the limit is a whole number of MiB.
Not changed
Re-checking the opened descriptor (file.metadata() after File::open, round 2). The window it would close is not the one that matters here: a FIFO blocks inside open itself, before any descriptor exists to check. A path swapped between metadata and open by another process is outside what a user-picked file needs to defend against; the read-side bound still caps a file that grows while it is read. The suggestion's other half, refusing an over-limit file without reading limit + 1 bytes, is already there: meta.len() > limit is checked before opening.
The debugger's nametable peek during a split tile (round 2). Real, but not this release's: debug_peek_ppu has always called nametable_fetch, and before v3.5.1 the split branch applied whenever a latch was set, so the v3.5.1 gate makes the case rarer, not new. A side-effect-free peek path for the MMC5 is a debugger improvement worth its own ticket rather than a release-branch change.
Gates on 0b6c0d52: rustynes-frontend 783 passed, 1 ignored; rustynes-mcp passes; clippy -D warnings clean for the workspace, default / scripting / scripting+hd-pack / retroachievements / full, and both wasm32 builds; rustdoc clean; the four release audits pass.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The notes said the MiSTer bitstreams were "attached below". They
cannot be at publication: Auto Release publishes the release when this
PR merges, and the bitstreams are compiled from the MiSTer core's
release commit, which must first pin this release's merge commit and
pass VERIFY=1. Two sentences now say they are added some hours after
publication, once compiled and checked, and that the previous
release's bitstreams are the latest until then.
Release audits (notes render, anchors) and markdownlint pass.

🟡 Changes recommended
A path-check/open race can still block indefinitely on FIFOs, the project size cap can prevent reopening successful saves, and VBL-flag suppression can leave MMC5 rendering state stale.
Prepares v3.5.1 “Reprise,” a patch release addressing MMC5 behavior outside rendering, stuck inputs after rebinding, and unsafe file reads. It also supplies the release baseline required by v3.6.0.
Changes:
Gates MMC5 CHR and nametable substitutions on rendering and raises the emulation epoch to 7.
Releases held inputs on rebinding and adds bounded, regular-file reads across desktop and CLI loaders.
Synchronizes release metadata and documentation, adds regression coverage, and updates two dependencies.

Round two on #630 (CodeRabbit, Codex), each checked at the cited line.
TAStudio projects (CodeRabbit and Codex, the same finding). v3.5.1 moved
every user-file read to `bounded_read::read`, 64 MiB, and that included
`load_tas_project`. A `.rnmproj` stores every branch's input log and
save state, so the app's own Save Project can write past 64 MiB (64
branches of an hour each pass it in frame records alone) and the project
would then not reopen. Projects get `MAX_TAS_PROJECT`, 1 GiB, on both
sides: the load reads up to it and the save refuses to write past it,
so the app can no longer produce a project its loader rejects. Still a
bound: the FIFO / device refusal and the read-side cap stay.
A rebind while paused (CodeRabbit). `reload_bindings` releases held
state, but with the emulation thread paused there is no `EmuFrame` to
republish it, so the first frame after resuming ran with the old held
buttons and fast-forward. The reload path now calls
`publish_shared_input()` itself.
The MCP gate (CodeRabbit). The real-time `lua_eval` check resumed for 30
frames, so the run could finish before the Lua call landed in it and the
test would still pass. It now runs 600 frames and asserts the runner is
still going after the call.
Deferred, with a ticket (`T-MMC5-WINDOW-END`, ROADMAP, v3.6.1):
CodeRabbit's MMC5 finding is real. `render_window` closes only on
`notify_vblank()`, so a `$2007` access on post-render line 240 can still
take a substitution, and the PPU skips `notify_vblank()` on a frame
whose VBL flag a `$2002` read suppressed (ppu.rs, the VBL-set branch),
leaving the window open through that vertical blank. The fix moves the
window's end in both cores and needs a new stimulus for the RTL half,
so it does not go into the release branch.
Verified: rustynes-mcp `gate` 8 passed (12.4 s, the longer run);
rustynes-frontend bounded_read + input 56 passed; clippy -D warnings
clean for default / scripting / scripting+hd-pack / retroachievements /
full and wasm32; markdownlint on the ROADMAP.

Brings v3.5.1's last two commits into v3.6.0: the bitstream wording in
the v3.5.1 notes (5903889) and the #630 round-two fixes (fe437a3:
TAStudio projects bounded at 1 GiB on load and save, input republished
after a paused rebind, the MCP gate's longer real-time run, and the
T-MMC5-WINDOW-END ticket). Clean merge; clippy clean.

fe437a3 raised the real-time `lua_eval` check's run from 30 to 600
frames so the Lua call could not miss it. The run is paced in real time,
so 600 frames is 10 s at full speed, and the macOS runner fell behind:
559 frames when the 20 s wait for the run's end ran out, and the
`realtime_frames == 600` assertion failed (CI run 41679254278,
test (macos-latest)).
The guarantee CodeRabbit asked for is the `is_running()` assertion
after the call, not the frame count. So: 240 frames (4 s paced), a
120 s wait for the run's end, and a fresh 120 s deadline for the
breakpoint run below it, which reused the first one.
Locally: gate 8 passed in 5.0 s; clippy clean.

CodeRabbit's third round on #630, carried here so #630 merged on its
green run rather than restarting it for a status line.
- An oversized project (over `MAX_TAS_PROJECT`, 1 GiB) was refused on
save with only a stderr line; the desktop user saw nothing. The guard
now sets `StatusMessage::error` first.
- The 1 GiB bound is on the file, not on what decoding allocates:
`load_rnmproj` expands every five-byte frame record. Real, not a
regression (the load had no bound before v3.5.1), and ticketed as
`T-TAS-PROJECT-DECODE-BOUND` (ROADMAP, v3.6.1).
clippy -D warnings clean; markdownlint on the ROADMAP.

Recorded with the ours strategy, because v3.6.0 already contains everything main does: 14a1270's tree is byte-identical to feat/v3.5.1's tip 61a77ea (the squash of #630), which this branch merged in 332d49b, and its only parent 3d02b99 is an ancestor of this branch. A content merge conflicted in 29 files only because the squash re-states v3.5.1's lines that v3.6.0 has since moved on (versions, CHANGELOG, plans). With this, #631's diff against main is v3.6.0 alone.

…r row
T-MMC5-WINDOW-END (CodeRabbit on #630), and an oracle defect the MiSTer
sibling's new stimulus found on the way.
1. The background-fetch window (`render_window`) ended only at
`notify_vblank`. Since v3.5.1 the split's bank and an extended
attribute's bank apply only inside it with rendering on, so:
- on post-render line 240, rendering on and nothing fetched, a $2007
CHR read still took the split's bank;
- a $2002 read on the race dot suppresses the VBL flag and the NMI, and
`Ppu` also skipped `bus.notify_vblank()` then, because the call sat
inside the flag's branch: the window stayed open through that blank.
`Mmc5::notify_cpu_cycle` now also closes the window on the in-frame
flag's idle rule (three M2 cycles with no PPU read, the page's own
end-of-frame signal, a few dots into line 240), but only while
`ppu_rendering`: an idle run that a $2001 disable caused leaves it, so a
mid-frame re-enable fetches with the same CHR set as before. And the
PPU calls `notify_vblank` at the vertical-blank dot on every frame,
independent of the CPU-visible flag. The MMC5 is the only implementer.
2. `Ppu::fetch_nt` passes the MMC5 split the scanline of the fetch, and
meant to pass 0 for the pre-render line, whose last two fetch groups
are line 0's first two tiles. It tested `self.scanline < 0`, which
never holds: `scanline` counts the pre-render line as the region's last
(`PpuRegion::prerender_line`, 261 / 311). So those tiles took row
($5201 + 261) % 240 (or + 311). It now compares with
`prerender_line()`. The page's v-split counter "resets to the vertical
scrolling value in $5201 each v-blank". docs/ppu-2c02.md's own
interface sketch said the pre-render line was -1; corrected.
How it was found: the sibling's `mapper5window491` frame gate differed
from this oracle at line 0 only (4 pixels, x 1-2 and 9-10), and the
DUT's line 0 matched its own line 1, as a row-4 tile at $5201 = $23 must
on both lines. Decoding the oracle's pixels (CHR-RAM there labels each
1 KiB bank and tile) gave tile $C1 in bank 7: ExRAM row 7, which is
(35 + 261) % 240 = 56 -> row 7.
Tests, each mutation-checked (the mutant fails it):
- `line_240_closes_the_fetch_window_with_rendering_on` (mappers): two idle
cycles keep the window, the third closes it, and a $2007 read then gets
the A set; the split's bank likewise. Mutant: no idle close.
- `an_idle_run_with_rendering_off_keeps_the_fetch_window`: mutant: close
regardless of `ppu_rendering`.
- `vblank_reaches_the_mapper_when_a_status_read_suppresses_the_flag`
(ppu): a dot-0 $2002 read still yields one notification, and the flag
stays suppressed. Mutant: the old `!suppress_vbl_this_frame` gate.
- `the_pre_render_lines_split_queries_pass_scanline_zero` (ppu), NTSC, PAL
and Dendy, and line 1 passes 1. Mutant: `scanline < 0`.
The epoch is unchanged (8). The whole of
`cargo test --workspace --features test-roms,commercial-roms` passes
4,048 / 0 / 20 (v3.6.0's cut: 4,030 / 0 / 20), with the 1,116-dump boot
coverage and every commercial snapshot, Uchuu Keibitai SDF (the one
commercial split user) included: no committed frame, sample or golden
moved. A game that reads CHR through $2007 on line 240, or splits the
first two columns with $5201 set, now behaves differently; none is in the
corpus. Provenance: ppu.rs carries a header for the sprite-evaluation,
OAM-decay and ALE regions; `fetch_nt`'s split query is none of them.
Docs: docs/mappers.md (where the window ends; the split's pre-render row),
docs/ppu-2c02.md (the scanline range; the every-frame notice), CHANGELOG
(with the two MiSTer entries, sibling efaf14a / b6a62ac), ROADMAP (three
tickets DONE), and to-dos/plans/v3.6.1-plan.md, this release's plan.

* build(deps): every ecosystem at its newest compatible release
One consolidated change for v3.6.1 in place of the seven open Dependabot
PRs (#627, #629, #632, #633, #635, #636, #637), widened past what they
carried to every manifest in the repository.
Cargo (workspace): `cargo upgrade --incompatible` found five requirements
behind; all five moved. rmcp 3.5.1 -> 3.8.0 (rustynes-mcp), rusqlite 0.40
-> 0.41 (script-sqlite, still `bundled`), toml 1.1 -> 1.2, and the
wasm-bindgen family 0.2.129 -> 0.2.130 with js-sys / web-sys 0.3.107 and
wasm-bindgen-futures 0.4.80. The Trunk.toml wasm-bindgen CLI pin moved to
0.2.130 in the same change: a mismatch with the locked library fails
`trunk build` and the Pages deploy while wasm clippy still passes. The
mobile bridge's `getrandom` moved 0.2 -> 0.4; its only call,
`getrandom::getrandom`, is `getrandom::fill` there. `cargo update` then
refreshed the lock (tokio 1.54.1, zip 9.3.0, ureq 3.5.1, uuid 1.29, the
icu 2.4 family and others).
Deliberately not moved: the frontend's two optional getrandom shims
(0.2 `js`, 0.3 `wasm_js`) behind `script-wasm`. They exist only to select
a browser backend for the majors piccolo's own tree (rand, ahash) pulls,
so moving them to 0.4 would add a third getrandom and select nothing.
The excluded workspaces were refreshed too: fuzz/ (7 lock lines; its lock
is gitignored), rustynes-cosim (nothing to move), enhanced-validator
(nothing).
Android: AGP 9.4.1 -> 9.5.0 (application + test plugins, as one group),
the Gradle wrapper 9.8.1 -> 9.8.2 (distribution URL and checksum, taken
from Dependabot's branch), play-services-cast-framework 22.3.1 -> 23.0.0.
#627 also rewrote every line of gradlew.bat; that was CRLF only. Normalised
to LF (the mixed-line-ending hook's `--fix=lf`), it is byte-identical to
the 9.8.1 file, so it is not in this commit. Dependabot's gradle
limit is 5 and 4 PRs were open, so it was not capped and nothing else on
that side is behind. Not built locally (no Android SDK here); the
android workflow builds it on the PR.
Hosted services: wrangler 4.151.1 -> 4.157.0, vitest 5.0.5 -> 5.1.0,
@cloudflare/vitest-plugin 1.4.4 -> 1.5.1, workers-types 5.20261104.1, all
still exact pins. undici (#636's security group) resolves to 7.30.1
through miniflare. `npm audit`: 0 vulnerabilities.
CI: taiki-e/install-action v2.88.1 (ci, feature-powerset, security),
gradle/actions/setup-gradle v6.4.1 (android, ci).
Pre-commit: markdownlint-cli v0.49.1 -> v0.50.0, ruff v0.17.1 -> v0.17.3,
shellcheck-py v0.11.0.1 -> v0.11.0.1-1. A linter that gains a rule turns
unchanged documents red (v0.39 -> v0.49 brought MD060 and 1,936
findings), so each was run over the whole corpus before the pin moved:
markdownlint, ruff check and shellcheck all pass with no file changed.
Found on the way: `cargo clippy -p rustynes-script --all-targets
--features script-sqlite -- -D warnings` fails on clippy 1.99's
assert_is_empty in userdata_sqlite.rs's test. CI runs those tests but
never lints them with that feature, so it was never reported. Fixed by
asserting equality with an empty Vec, which also prints the rows on
failure.
Checked: cargo fmt; clippy -D warnings for the workspace, frontend
`full` and `retroachievements`, rustynes-script with script-sqlite +
script-ipc, and all three wasm32 frontend builds (default, wasm-canvas,
script-wasm); the thumbv7em no_std core build; rustynes-script tests 80
passed; cargo deny check; trunk build --release; services/hosted
`npm run check` (tsc + 132 vitest tests passed).

* fix(tastudio): bound a project's decoded size, not only its file size
T-TAS-PROJECT-DECODE-BOUND (CodeRabbit on #630). v3.5.1 capped a
.rnmproj at 1 GiB on read and write (bounded_read::MAX_TAS_PROJECT), but
the file is not what TasEditor::load_rnmproj allocates. A version-2 frame
is a 5-byte record on disk and a whole FrameInput in memory (four pads,
the expansion byte, an Option<ExtraInput>), and every branch carries its
own copy of the input log plus its own markers. So a valid project near
the file cap could decode to several GiB. Not a regression: before v3.5.1
the file was read unbounded.
The existing per-Vec guards (with_capacity capped by remaining bytes) stop
a single lying count from reserving more than the blob could hold; they
do not stop an honest-looking blob from expanding. What changed:
- Reader carries a decoded-bytes budget (RNMPROJ_DECODE_BUDGET, 1 GiB)
and charges it from each declared count BEFORE the records are read:
a version-2 log's own frame count (the first u32 of its encode_log
blob, peeked before decode_log builds anything), a version-1 log's
count, each marker list's count (usize key + String header per marker)
and each label's length. The charge accumulates across the main log
and every branch, and saturates rather than overflowing.
- Over budget is RnmProjError::DecodeBudget { needed, budget }, raised
from the counts alone. load_rnmproj still commits nothing on any error.
- load_rnmproj_within(bytes, budget) is the private seam the tests use to
reach the refusal without gigabyte fixtures.
Sizing: at size_of::<FrameInput>() per frame, 1 GiB holds tens of
millions of frames across all branches, more than a hundred hours at
60 fps, so no real project is refused.
Tests (both new, 44 tastudio tests pass):
- rnmproj_counts_past_the_decode_budget_are_refused_before_decoding: a
version-2 log claiming u32::MAX frames and carrying none. Without the
budget it reaches decode_log and is refused as BadInputLog; with it the
refusal is DecodeBudget, which only the count can raise, so the variant
shows the order. The same for a u32::MAX marker count. Editor unmutated.
- rnmproj_decode_budget_counts_every_branch: 1,000 frames and three
branches (4,000 decoded frames plus four copies of one marker). A budget
one frame short is refused, though no single log comes near it; the
exact budget loads and re-serialises byte for byte; a 1,000,000-frame
project opens under the shipped budget.
Mutation-checked: dropping the version-2 count charge fails both tests
(the first gets BadInputLog, the second loads past the short budget);
making the budget per-log instead of cumulative fails the second.
docs/creator-tools.md states both bounds.

* fix(mmc5): end the fetch window with rendering; the split's pre-render row
T-MMC5-WINDOW-END (CodeRabbit on #630), and an oracle defect the MiSTer
sibling's new stimulus found on the way.
1. The background-fetch window (`render_window`) ended only at
`notify_vblank`. Since v3.5.1 the split's bank and an extended
attribute's bank apply only inside it with rendering on, so:
- on post-render line 240, rendering on and nothing fetched, a $2007
CHR read still took the split's bank;
It tested `self.scanline < 0`, which
never holds: `scanline` counts the pre-render line as the region's last
(`PpuRegion::prerender_line`, 261 / 311). So those tiles took row

DUT's line 0 matched its own line 1, as a row-4 tile at $5201 = $23 must

1 KiB bank and tile) gave tile $C1 in bank 7: ExRAM row 7, which is
(35 + 261) % 240 = 56 -> row 7.
Tests, each mutation-checked (the mutant fails it):
- `line_240_closes_the_fetch_window_with_rendering_on` (mappers): two idle
cycles keep the window, the third closes it, and a $2007 read then gets
the A set; the split's bank likewise. Mutant: no idle close.
- `an_idle_run_with_rendering_off_keeps_the_fetch_window`: mutant: close
regardless of `ppu_rendering`.
- `vblank_reaches_the_mapper_when_a_status_read_suppresses_the_flag`
(ppu): a dot-0 $2002 read still yields one notification, and the flag
stays suppressed. Mutant: the old `!suppress_vbl_this_frame` gate.
- `the_pre_render_lines_split_queries_pass_scanline_zero` (ppu), NTSC, PAL
and Dendy, and line 1 passes 1. Mutant: `scanline < 0`.
The epoch is unchanged (8). The whole of
`cargo test --workspace --features test-roms,commercial-roms` passes
4,048 / 0 / 20 (v3.6.0's cut: 4,030 / 0 / 20), with the 1,116-dump boot

* chore(release): cut v3.6.1 "Threshold"; emulation epoch 9
The version bump, the anchors, the epoch and the release notes for v3.6.1,
a patch release on v3.6.0 "Octave": the dependency sweep (06654d2), the
TAStudio decode bound (884b1f4), the MMC5 window end and the split's
pre-render row (875e824), and the MiSTer core's region-tied save states
and PAL / Dendy MMC5 (sibling efaf14a, b6a62ac).
The codename "Threshold" is PROVISIONAL: the maintainer chooses codenames
at the cut, and the cut was made at 03:00 without asking (the instruction
was to work the release through). It names the release's subject, the
edges of things: where the MMC5's fetch window ends, a frame's first line,
the region boundary a save state may not cross. Checked unused as a quoted
codename in CHANGELOG.md. Renaming it is the CHANGELOG header, the notes'
title, the VERSION-PLAN row, the ROADMAP sentence and the anchors
bump_release.py wrote.
EMULATION_EPOCH 8 -> 9. 875e824 said the epoch stays 8, because no
golden, snapshot or fingerprint moved (the full test-roms + commercial
suite passes 4,048 / 0 / 20, Uchuu Keibitai SDF, the one commercial split
user, included). That was the wrong reading of the rule, which is
"anything that alters a frame, a sample or a bus cycle against the last
release", not "anything the corpus happens to observe": the split-row fix
changes the frame of any game that splits the first two columns with
$5201 set, and the window end changes what a $2007 CHR read on line 240
returns. v3.5.1 raised epoch 7 by the maintainer's call for exactly that
shape (no recorded output moved, a bus value did). The table row in
hardware_options.rs says so; the fingerprint table was re-blessed and only
its `# epoch` line changed (every row identical); `last_release_epoch`
stays 8, the last release's. The plan's record is corrected beside the
original sentence rather than replacing it.
bump_release.py --apply moved every anchor it owns (Cargo.toml and both
lockfiles, the cosim crate, the libretro .info, Android's versionCode, the
iOS project, the hosted Worker's package files, and the prose anchors in
AGENTS, ARCHITECTURE, OVERVIEW, README, ROADMAP, SECURITY, SUPPORT and
STATUS). Its first dry run refused, rightly: the ROADMAP release-line
chain ended "v3.6.0, the current release", owed a written v3.6.1 clause,
which is added. And the first --apply doubled the lead: I passed a --lead
that began with the version and date the anchors already print, giving
`v3.6.1 "Threshold" (2026-11-05) -- v3.6.1 "Threshold" (2026-11-05) --
every...` in eight files; the duplicated prefix was removed and the
anchors re-checked. By hand: the CHANGELOG [3.6.1] header and its
Breaking section (the [Unreleased] heading kept, empty), the VERSION-PLAN
row, .github/release-notes/v3.6.1.md.
Two traps recorded in docs/agents/: markdownlint-cli 0.50.0 reads a bare
`$` in prose as inline math, which shifts every later code span on the
line (found writing 875e824's docs); and a hand-run RTL mutant whose
build fails silently reruns the old binary and reads as NOT CAUGHT (found
in the sibling's region save-state work).
Checked: the release audits (anchors 14, state prose 6, notes render 18,
contribution checklist 4, libretro .info 9: 51 passed);
`cargo test --workspace` 3,430 passed under epoch 9;
`epoch_fingerprint` 2 passed after the re-bless; the skill's pre-release
checker clean (notes reflowed, 1,345 words, both repos' commits covered);
markdownlint on every changed document.

* fix(tastudio, mmc5): charge every decoded allocation; save what loads
Review round 1 on #639 (Copilot 4, CodeRabbit 6 inline + 1 outside the
diff + 1 additional). Each finding checked against the code first.
TAStudio decode budget, rebuilt as a pre-pass (Copilot x3, CodeRabbit x2).
884b1f4 charged frame and marker counts inside the decoders. The review
found what that missed, and each was confirmed by reading the code:
- branches were never charged (Copilot): a version-1 project of 20 M empty
branches charged nothing while its branch vector alone passed 1 GiB;
- branch states were copied uncharged (Copilot);
- a version-2 log's blob was copied (`self.bytes()`) before its count was
charged (CodeRabbit), and the decoder's per-frame Option<ExtraInput>
vector, live beside the frames, was uncharged (CodeRabbit);
- the INPUT EVENTS list was uncharged (Copilot). Its reservation is
bounded by the block's bytes (`remaining / MIN_EVENT_LEN`), so the
claim of "multiple GiB from a declared u32::MAX" overstates it; the
real gap is the expansion of each 5-byte event into a decoded tuple.
Now `rnmproj_decoded_cost_within(bytes, budget)` walks the whole file
first, allocating nothing, and charges every log through a new core
function, `FrameInput::decode_log_cost` (frames x (FrameInput +
Option<ExtraInput>), plus the event list from the block's declared count
bounded as the decoder bounds it), every marker (key + String + label
bytes), and each branch's own `Branch` and its state bytes. The load runs
it before decoding anything; the version-2 decoder now borrows the log
slice instead of copying it. The cost belongs in the core because the
core owns the log format and the decoder's allocations.
Saving refuses what loading would (Copilot): `App::save_tas_project`
runs the same pre-pass on the bytes it is about to write and refuses, on
screen, before the file dialog, so a project the app cannot reopen never
replaces a loadable one.
Tests: `rnmproj_decode_budget_counts_every_branch` now asserts the
pre-pass's cost EXACTLY (4,000 frames x per-frame cost + four marker maps
+ three Branch structs + three state lengths), refuses at cost - 1, loads
at cost; new `rnmproj_empty_branches_are_charged` (1,000 empty branches,
version 1), `rnmproj_input_events_are_charged` (zero frames, u32::MAX
events over 50,000 bytes), `rnmproj_save_and_load_share_the_budget`.
Mutants, each CAUGHT: no branch charge (2 tests), no event charge, no
Option<ExtraInput> in the per-frame cost, no pre-pass in the load (4
tests). 47 tastudio tests pass; core movie tests 77 pass; the thumbv7em
no_std core builds.
MMC5, a corner in 875e824's rule (CodeRabbit, marked unverified; the
reading below confirms it). The window's idle close is gated on
rendering, so a long rendering-off run saturates `det_idle_cycles` at 3
with the window kept open. Re-enabled on post-render line 240, where
nothing is fetched, the count could never reach 3 again and the window
stayed open to vertical blank. The off-to-on $2001 transition now
restarts the count; in-frame is already clear and the matcher was reset
by the disable, so nothing else the count drives can change. New test
`a_re_enable_without_fetches_still_closes_the_fetch_window`; mutant (no
restart): CAUGHT. 90 MMC5 tests pass. The MiSTer core mirrors it (sibling
#72), and re-exporting the MMC5 stems' goldens with this oracle moves
nothing but the manifests' version line.
Epoch (Copilot): `last_release_epoch` 8 -> 9 at the cut, as the table's
own header requires, so a later release cannot move output under the
already-shipped 9. `epoch_fingerprint` 2 passed.
Docs (CodeRabbit): AGENTS.md named markdownlint-cli v0.49.1 (now v0.50.0
with the history kept); the Gradle checksum comment named 9.8.1's file,
and the 9.8.2 checksum was verified against services.gradle.org before
the comment changed (21bd5da2...); my own trap bullet carried the bare
`$5201` it warns about (escaped); to-dos/ROADMAP.md's release chain said
the epoch stayed 8 (it is 9); SECURITY.md's table still made 3.5.x the
current line (3.6.x now; 3.5.x partial). CHANGELOG and the notes describe
the wider budget, the save check and the re-enable restart.

* ci: lint rustynes-script's tests with script-sqlite and script-ipc
Antigravity on #639. `cargo clippy -p rustynes-frontend --all-targets
--features full` lints the frontend's own test targets; rustynes-script
is compiled as a library dependency there, so its #[cfg(test)] modules
with script-sqlite were never linted. The v3.6.1 dependency sweep ran
`cargo clippy -p rustynes-script --all-targets --features
script-sqlite,script-ipc -- -D warnings` by hand and found a real failure
(clippy 1.99's assert_is_empty, fixed in 06654d2); this makes CI run it.
The suggested `--features scripting,script-sqlite` would not resolve:
`scripting` is the frontend's feature, and rustynes-script's are
mlua-backend (default), script-wasm, script-ipc and script-sqlite.
Checked: the command passes locally on this tree; actionlint clean.

* fix(tastudio): show a refused project in the status bar; charge before slicing
Antigravity's second round on #639 (no blocking issues; it reviewed
f41d68c, so its CI-step suggestion is 3c74b20, already pushed).
- A refused load was reported on stderr only. The v3.6.1 notes say a
project over the decode budget "is refused with a message", and a
desktop launch has no terminal, so a GUI user saw nothing happen.
`App::load_tas_project` now puts both refusals, the bounded read's and
the parse's (malformed, or past `RNMPROJ_DECODE_BUDGET`), in the status
bar as errors, as the save path has since 35f81aa, and still logs them.
- The pre-pass charged a marker label's and a branch state's declared
length after slicing it, so an oversized declared length in a truncated
file came back `Truncated` instead of `DecodeBudget`. Charge first, as
`cost_input_log` already did. Neither order allocates; the change is in
which refusal a hostile file gets.
- `Reader`'s `charged` / `budget` are documented as the pre-pass's: the
decoders run after it has passed and charge nothing.
Checked: tastudio tests 47 passed; clippy -D warnings for the frontend's
default and `full` feature sets; fmt.

Note
Medium Risk
Emulation epoch 7 intentionally breaks v3.5.0 movies and netplay pairing, and MMC5
$2007behavior changes in vblank; file-open hardening touches many load paths but is bounded and tested.Overview
v3.5.1 "Reprise" is a patch on v3.5.0: MMC5 behavior, input rebinding, and safe file opens, plus emulation epoch 7 so v3.5.0 movies and netplay peers are refused (save states still load;
.rnmformat 7 and netplay protocol 9 unchanged).MMC5 (Rust core and MiSTer): Split-screen and extended-attribute CHR bank overrides, and the split’s nametable substitution, now apply only while the PPU is rendering. A
$2007CHR or nametable read in vertical blank (or with rendering off) uses the normal bank registers again, matching NESdev. Epoch 7 was raised even though no golden suites moved, because games that read CHR via$2007in vblank could replay differently without a guard.Frontend: Rebinding clears every held keyboard-mapped input, gamepad buttons, and Rewind/Fast-forward hold keys so releases still match the new map. User-chosen paths go through
bounded_read: non-regular files (FIFOs, devices, symlinks to them) are rejected beforeopen, with a 64 MiB cap (TAStudio projects use a separate 1 GiB limit aligned on save). Same rules extend to bundles,verify/speedrun, header editor,dump-check, and MCP--rom.CI / housekeeping: Shared-memory IPC tests run on Windows and macOS in full CI; minor lockfile bumps (
ctutils,clipboard-win); workspace version 3.5.1 and release docs.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 61a77ea. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
