Improve deployment stability by adding health check endpoints [] - #385
This also refactors the deployment to use Quart for the servers (consistent with the AcknowlEDG API server) so that developers do not need to maintain knowledge of multiple WebSocket server patterns.
Additionally, management of process pool jobs has been improved so that a task taking longer than they are allowed, responding to a review no longer being monitored, or similar, are properly cleaned up without negatively impacting other tasks.
In a similar "reliability" vein, caps have been added to ensure input data stays within reasonable bounds to preserve service health.
Finally, a number of cleanup passes have been taken to improve code quality.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Reviews are queued while the publishing service is unavailable and reconciled when it reconnects.
A shared service endpoint provides health checks and optional webhook reception.
Runner connections reconnect automatically, and command output is capped while preserving useful portions.
Long review titles are shortened when needed while keeping their links intact.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of cancelled or failed requests, including avoiding invalid replies when reviewer details are unavailable and routing provider errors to the relevant reviewer.
Added safeguards against oversized or excessive workspace and CI artifacts.
Invalid test-suite names are rejected during configuration loading.
Processing attempts follow a backoff schedule, with cancelled or temporarily unavailable work refunded.
Documentation
Updated service configuration guidance for the shared endpoint, optional webhook setting, and deployment requirements.
This pull request updates Forge publishing and serving, runner connections, workspace limits, reviewer-scoped request handling, suite-name validation, exception handling, and asynchronous cleanup.
Changes: Forge service and publishing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared serving and service configuration dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{serving.py,config.py,service.py,webhooks.py,local.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/{compose.yaml,README.md,run-dev-oss-repo.sh}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{conftest.py,test_containers.py,test_state.py}
Forge endpoints use shared Quart serving and health checks. The service bind and optional webhook setting replace the separate webhook bind. Container health checks and service dependencies use the health endpoints.
Stored review state and processor lifecycle dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/db/store.py, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/processor.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{fakes.py,test_state.py,test_safety.py}
The processor stores sections before publisher sync and delists reviews before removing workspace data. Retry attempts can be started, refunded, and recorded separately. CI metadata and combined test-ID reads are bounded.
The publisher serves reviews from stored records and queues sync, delist, and prune operations for a shared publishing task. Tests cover reconnects, queued requests, delisting, and publisher health checks.
Per-process dispatchers take queued requests, match replies by request ID, skip abandoned queued work, and retry process startup.
Runner and workspace execution

Runner connections and output handling dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{runner/client.py,runner/server.py,sandbox_client.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{test_runner.py,test_containers.py}
The runner client maintains a reconnecting connection and bounds retained command output. The runner server uses a Quart blueprint, with tests for connection lifecycle and health checks.
Workspace, artifact, and CI input bounds dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{workspace.py,processor.py}, dev_tools/pylibs/edgtest/runtest/__init__.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_safety.py
Workspace processing limits sparse-checkout patterns, Git output, archive entries, and ZIP central-directory size. CI metadata and combined test-ID reads also have size limits.
Reviewer-scoped request handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reviewer identification and error replies dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/client/{shared.py,bench/__init__.py,test/__init__.py}, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/publisher/pool.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg/server/acknowledg_server/__init__.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{test_pool.py,test_symlinks.py}
Handlers ignore requests without a reviewer ID and include the ID in replies for identifiable failures. The server forwards valid provider errors to the matching reviewer.
Subscription startup and cancellation cleanup dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/client/{__init__.py,websocket.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_client_cancellation.py
Direct subscriptions start in the background. Subscription paths clean pending state and release acknowledged subscriptions after cancellation or failure.
Developer-tool validation and cleanup

Suite-name validation and sparse-checkout patterns dev_tools/pylibs/edgtest/{__init__.py,runtest/__init__.py}, dev_tools/bin/edgy, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/workspace.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_safety.py, dev_tools/tests/test_edgtest_suites.py
Suite names are limited to ASCII letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens, with a 64-character maximum. Configuration and sparse-checkout generation validate names.
Selected handlers catch Exception instead of catching all exceptions.
Async task and subprocess cleanup dev_tools/pylibs/edgutil/__init__.py, dev_tools/tests/test_edgutil.py, dev_tools/typecheck-python.sh
The event-loop helper awaits task cleanup, including tasks started during shutdown. A new helper terminates subprocesses after a configurable allowance.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 0d76e
The change adds health checks and queued publishing with stored-state replay, and it looks sound. Before merging, fix the minor items: kill the child process on cancellation in async_terminate_within, make the Python 3.11 cancellation test version-tolerant, and give Hypercorn a real logger so its error logs are not dropped.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 0d76e
The changes preserve important container and requester-isolation controls, but asynchronous publication introduces availability and recovery risks. An unavailable publishing destination can allow pending updates to accumulate, and a transient publication failure can leave a completed review only partially available.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The publisher now acknowledges each Sync after placing its full snapshot on an unbounded queue. On initial AcknowlEDG unavailability, the consumer waits for BatchClient startup while the service can continue submitting accepted updates. Sustained updates to monitored reviews can therefore accumulate historical snapshots and exhaust the shared publisher's memory budget, interrupting every review it serves. Previously, the server awaited synchronization before acknowledging and returned an unavailable result. Container memory limits contain the failure to the deployment component but do not bound this backlog.
Medium · reliability · inferred: A queued Sync can be acknowledged successfully and then fail transiently while subscribing a section. Subscription acknowledgement timeout raises ClientError, add_section discards the handler, and the publication consumer logs and drops the failed item. Processing can nevertheless mark the review completed. An AcknowlEDG reconnect cannot restore a discarded handler; another review update or service-to-publisher reconnect is needed to replay it. The base propagated synchronization failures back to processing. This weakens convergence and recovery by allowing a recoverable failure to leave a completed review partially unavailable indefinitely.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The publication-backlog concern threatens availability across reviews sharing one publisher. The inspected deployment limits its memory and exposes neither the service database nor its credential mount to that publisher; host or credential compromise was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The identified availability path requires accepted updates to monitored reviews while initial AcknowlEDG connectivity is unavailable: updates receive queue acknowledgements while the consumer cannot start draining them. Exploit rate and time to memory exhaustion were not measured; the internal publisher endpoint was not shown to be directly internet-accessible.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The server generates reviewer identity per session and passes it separately from reviewer-supplied request values. Provider replies use the bound review's reviewer broker, and the server stamps the bound section. These controls counter the suspected cross-review routing expansion.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Runner cancellation and connection teardown cancel owned commands and kill their process groups. Publication reconnect replay can restore stored reviews and prune obsolete ones, but that recovery is distinct from retrying an individual failed queue item.

Explanation
The title says the PR improves deployment stability by adding health check endpoints. The changeset adds a shared /healthz endpoint through serving.py, wires health probes into compose.yaml for all four services, and has tests that check HEALTH_PATH. Health checks are a real, central part of the change. The PR also includes much broader work, such as Quart migration, publisher and process-pool rework, and webhook config changes, which the title does not mention. Because the title names a real part of the change without covering the main points, it is partially related.

The new test covers only normal completion and the over-limit kill path. The cancellation path is the one that can hang. Add a test that cancels _communicate_bounded while yes runs. It must assert that the task finishes within a short timeout and that process.returncode is set. The test fails until the finally block kills the process.

Replace the fixed asyncio.sleep(0.2) with a deterministic yield.
The test uses the delay to let describing reach wait_connected. A fixed delay does not synchronize with that state. The task reaches _connected.wait() after one event-loop iteration, because no earlier step suspends. A single yield therefore gives deterministic ordering and removes the 200 ms of wall time.
♻️ Proposed fix
- await asyncio.sleep(0.2)+ # One loop iteration runs `describe` up to its wait for a connection.+ await asyncio.sleep(0)
Based on learnings: flag a test that relies on a fixed delay instead of synchronizing with the asynchronous background outcome.

Fail already-admitted jobs when every slot enters startup backoff.
A request can pass the admission check during the gap after backoff expires, then remain in self._jobs when every dispatcher fails to start and retries before consuming the queue. ProcessPool.answer and both handler loops have no deadline for this queued state. Drain and fail queued jobs when the last startup failure makes every slot starting_later().

Reconcile stored reviews when restarting publishing.
When a second publisher WebSocket sends different settings, _keep_publishing cancels the active publish task. The BatchClient context then stops the old session and removes its tracked reviews. The still-connected PublisherClient does not call _sync_all() again until its publisher WebSocket reconnects.
Therefore, if the queue is empty, the new session can withdraw previously served reviews and leave them unavailable until a later sync_one operation or publisher-WebSocket reconnect. Restarting publishing must reconcile the stored client state instead of only replacing the BatchClient session.

This allows tests to know when services are ready/pauses "docker compose up"'s
return until services are actually listening.
This also refactors the deployment to use Quart for the servers (consistent
with the AcknowlEDG API server) so that developers do not need to maintain
knowledge of multiple WebSocket server patterns.
Additionally, management of process pool jobs has been improved so that a task
taking longer than they are allowed, responding to a review no longer being
monitored, or similar, are properly cleaned up without negatively impacting
other tasks.
In a similar "reliability" vein, caps have been added to ensure input data
stays within reasonable bounds to preserve service health.
Finally, a number of cleanup passes have been taken to improve code quality.

Pass a logger to config.errorlog, not None.
The comment says that Hypercorn logs through the process's logging setup. That is not what None does. Hypercorn's _create_logger returns None when the target is falsy. Logger.error then skips the message. As a result, every Hypercorn error log is dropped, in every container. This includes ASGI framework errors, lifespan errors, and connection errors.
If a logging.Logger instance is given, Hypercorn uses it unchanged. It adds no handler of its own, so records go to the root setup from logging.basicConfig, and they appear once.

Kill the process when async_terminate_within is cancelled during the grace period.
The function promises to kill a process that does not exit within allowance. That promise holds only for asyncio.TimeoutError.
If the caller is cancelled while wait_for waits, CancelledError propagates. The function has already sent SIGTERM at that point. It never sends SIGKILL.
A realistic trigger is a second SIGINT. _stop_asyncio_loop documents this as the way to "cut a stuck cleanup short". _communicate_bounded calls this helper from an except BaseException block. A child that ignores SIGTERM then outlives the tool and keeps writing to an unread pipe.
Kill on any exit from the wait that does not come from a normal process exit.

Make the cancellation assertions hold on Python 3.11.
The forge packages require Python 3.11 or later, so this test must pass on 3.11. On 3.11, _subscribe does not end cancelled in this test. The inner asyncio.wait_for returns the answer when cancellation arrives after the future is already resolved. _subscribe then returns the subscription ID normally and does not release it. Both assert subscribing.cancelled() and assert _released(session) == [subscription_id] fail there. Python 3.12 and later re-raise the cancellation, so the current assertions hold only on those versions.
Accept both outcomes:
🐛 Suggested fix
await asyncio.gather(subscribing, return_exceptions = True)
- assert subscribing.cancelled()- assert _released(session) == [subscription_id]+ if subscribing.cancelled():+ assert _released(session) == [subscription_id]+ else:+ # Before Python 3.12, wait_for returns the answer instead of raising.+ # The caller then owns the subscription, so nothing is released.+ assert subscribing.result() == uuid.UUID(subscription_id)+ assert _released(session) == []

Here are two intertwined high priority bugs from Claude:
High: one pull request can block all publishing
forge/publisher/client.py:243: _sync_all re-raises ServiceUnavailableError from a single review and gives up on the whole resync. If one review's sync always kills the connection, no later review gets synced and prune is never sent. The client reconnects about once a second and fails on the same
review every time.
forge/processor.py:77: MAX_TEST_IDS_BYTES caps the raw changes.elist size at 4 MiB. But json.dumps(ensure_ascii=True) turns each control character or U+FFFD into a 6-byte \uXXXX. An artifact full of such bytes produces a sync message of about 24 MiB, over the 16 MiB websocket limit, which triggers #1.
The same data also overruns a pool process's readline(limit=MESSAGE_LIMIT).

This only waits on wanted.get() and not also on session.stopped(). If a batch session aborts, nothing is served, but the server still answers ok and health checks pass. The old AcknowledgePublisher.run waited on stopped()

Errors while applying a cycle are only logged, including temporary ones like 30s subscribe timeout. The server has already answered ok, so the PR is marked processed and never retried. Currently, these errors count as "unavailable" and the processor retires later.
