We call record_pack_expansion_ellipsis_position for unrecognized attributes presumably to silence an error that would occur when we don't know the attribute in a pack expansion e.g. acquire_capability(m...). We keep the arguments as plain text tokens and therefore we don't see it as expanding m (error). So we add a ... when there isn't one and record an expansion and sets the flag.

The attempted fix still fakes the ... but only skips setting the flag. The printer stops writing the extra ... but instantiation still repeats or drops the attribute.

This change doesn't fake the expansion. If no real ... follows an unrecognized attribute it would just throw away the pack names collected from the attribute's arguments.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of unrecognized attributes that reference parameter packs in C++ templates. Pack expansions are now distinguished from cases that are not expansions, preventing incorrect diagnostics and instantiation behavior.
  • Tests
    • Added regression coverage for expanded and unexpanded pack arguments, including packs of different lengths.

Walkthrough

The change adjusts how the compiler handles pack references in unrecognized attributes during pack expansion. It adds regression tests for expanded and unexpanded attribute arguments and for references to parameter packs of different lengths.

Changes: Unrecognized attribute pack handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pack-reference handling
src/attribute.c, src/scope_stk.c, src/scope_stk.h, src/pending_changes/gh-412-unrecognized-attr-pack-expansion.txt
Attribute scanning suppresses the no-packs diagnostic when it sees an ellipsis. Otherwise, it discards pack references for the context. The new helper acts only in qualifying prototype-scan contexts. The changelog describes the fix.
Attribute pack regression coverage
tests/tests/regressions/unrecognized-attr-arg-pack-expansion/*, tests/tests/regressions/.unrecognized-attr-arg-pack-lengths.rto/*, tests/tests/regressions/unrecognized-attr-arg-pack-lengths.sft.cpp
Regression tests cover attribute pack expansion, unexpanded pack arguments, empty and multiple packs, and references to packs of different lengths. Expected output records attribute expansion flags and test commands.

Put the new entry in src/pending_changes/.

This is a new changelog entry. Do not add it directly to src/Changes. Create src/pending_changes/gh-424-unrecognized-attr-arg-pack-expansion.txt with [GH #424], the summary, a blank line, and the description. Then run edg-exec -- edg-collect-changes --check src/Changes src/pending_changes.

As per coding guidelines, new changelog entries must use the pending-change workflow.
