fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything - #63
fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything#63hyperpolymath wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
MEASURED 2026-08-27: this gate's pattern caught 0 OF 6 invisible-character test
cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi
override or word joiner.
ROOT CAUSE: the pattern used UTF-8 BYTE sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P
matches CHARACTERS. Bytes c2 a0 are ONE character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for TWO
characters, U+00C2 then U+00A0, which is never present.
grep -P '\xc2\xa0' -> miss
grep -P '\x{a0}' -> MATCH
Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings.
FIXED: codepoint escapes; C0 control characters \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F
added (TAB/LF/CR excluded); and grep -a, without which grep skips any NUL-bearing
file as binary.
The C0 range matters: a stray BACKSPACE byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran, and this linter called it clean.
Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
VERIFIED: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real
NBSP before the change was kept.
📝 WalkthroughSummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe workflow improves invisible-character detection. It uses Unicode code-point escapes, adds control-character and word-joiner coverage, and scans binary files as text. ChangesInvisible-character gate
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The workflow now detects the targeted invisible characters, but malformed UTF-8 files can still be skipped without failing the check. This is a bounded CI correctness risk that is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or follow-up. Poem

Pull Request Overview
While the PR successfully addresses the issue of the invisible-character gate being ineffective, there are two significant issues that should be addressed before merging. First, the updated regex pattern is missing the Narrow Non-Breaking Space (\x{202f}), which was previously covered in the byte-encoded patterns; this represents a regression in detection coverage. Second, the use of grep -P with Unicode escapes requires a UTF-8 locale (e.g., LC_ALL: C.UTF-8) to function correctly; without this, the gate may fail silently or incorrectly match characters, potentially reintroducing the 'gate never matching anything' problem.
About this PR
- While the logic improvements are valid, the repository lacks automated test cases to verify these regex patterns against positive and negative samples. This makes the CI gate vulnerable to future regressions or silent failures, especially as the list of blocked characters evolves.
Test suggestions
- Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of Non-breaking space (U+00A0) in a source file
- Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of Soft Hyphen (U+00AD) in a source file
- Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of Zero-width space (U+200B) in a source file
- Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of Byte Order Mark (U+FEFF) in a source file
- Missing recommended test scenario: Detection of C0 control character (e.g., Backspace \x08) in a source file
- Missing recommended test scenario: Scanning a file containing NUL bytes (\x00) without the file being skipped by grep

🟡 MEDIUM RISK
To ensure grep -P correctly interprets Unicode escape sequences, the environment should be explicitly set to a UTF-8 locale. Without this, the regex engine may fail to match characters depending on the runner's default locale. Since stderr is redirected to /dev/null, these errors would be silent. Try setting LC_ALL: C.UTF-8 in the job or step environment.

🟡 MEDIUM RISK
The regex pattern is missing \x{202f} (Narrow Non-Breaking Space), which was included in the previous version. To maintain and improve coverage, please add it back. Additionally, consider including the Unicode Line Separator (\x{2028}) and Paragraph Separator (\x{2029}), and using a range for directional formatting characters: [\x{202a}-\x{202e}].

⚪ LOW RISK
Suggestion: The -r flag is redundant here because find provides the paths. Using + instead of \; improves performance by bundling files into fewer process forks.

UTF mode, such as by prefixing it with (*UTF), while preserving all existing

Prevent malformed UTF-8 from bypassing the scan.
When (*UTF) receives malformed UTF-8, PCRE2 returns an error. grep -a does not change this behaviour. The workflow records EL_EXIT but does not use it to fail the step, so the file is omitted from /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt and the summary can report no findings. Add a byte-oriented scan or fail the gate on UTF-8 errors. Add a malformed-UTF-8 regression case.

In @.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml at line 122, Update the scan using
PATTERNS so malformed UTF-8 cannot be omitted when PCRE2 reports an error:
either add a byte-oriented validation scan or propagate a nonzero UTF-8 error
status from EL_EXIT to fail the gate. Ensure malformed UTF-8 files are
represented in the results, and add a regression case covering malformed input.

Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.
Root cause
The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (
\xc2\xa0) whilegrep -Pmatches characters. Bytesc2 a0are one character U+00A0;\xc2\xa0asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.Only
\x00worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.Fixed
\x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1Fadded (TAB/LF/CR excluded)grep -a— without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binaryThe C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.
