fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything - #58
fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything#58hyperpolymath wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
MEASURED 2026-08-27: this gate's pattern caught 0 OF 6 invisible-character test
cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi
override or word joiner.
ROOT CAUSE: the pattern used UTF-8 BYTE sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P
matches CHARACTERS. Bytes c2 a0 are ONE character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for TWO
characters, U+00C2 then U+00A0, which is never present.
grep -P '\xc2\xa0' -> miss
grep -P '\x{a0}' -> MATCH
Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings.
FIXED: codepoint escapes; C0 control characters \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F
added (TAB/LF/CR excluded); and grep -a, without which grep skips any NUL-bearing
file as binary.
The C0 range matters: a stray BACKSPACE byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran, and this linter called it clean.
Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
VERIFIED: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real
NBSP before the change was kept.
📝 WalkthroughSummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe empty-lint workflow now matches invisible characters with Unicode code-point escapes, includes selected C0 controls, and scans binary files as text. ChangesInvisible-character gate
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~5 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The workflow gate now detects the intended Unicode characters, but it can still miss malformed UTF-8 files and a leading UTF-8 BOM. This is a bounded correctness gap, so the PR is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up. Poem

Full details: Description checkExplanation The description explains the root cause, the implemented workflow changes, and the verification performed. It does not use the template headings or complete the required checklist, but it provides the main required information. Full details: Linked Issues checkExplanation The workflow changes address codepoint escapes, C0 control detection, and grep -a. The provided summary does not show the required separate leading-BOM check or the corresponding updates to stdlib/ByteDetector.affine and config.ncl needed to keep the compiled linter aligned with the CI gate. The linked issue therefore is not fully satisfied. Resolution Add or provide evidence for the separate leading-BOM check and update stdlib/ByteDetector.affine and config.ncl with the same C0 control handling. Verify that the compiled linter and CI gate detect the required cases consistently without flagging normal whitespace. Full details: Docstring CoverageExplanation No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Pull Request Overview
The PR successfully addresses the invisible character detection gate by transitioning to PCRE-compatible Unicode hex escapes and ensuring binary-like files are scanned using the -a flag. Codacy analysis indicates the changes are up to standards with no new quality issues.
While the logic fixes are sound, there is a risk of regression as no sample files containing these invisible characters were added to the repository for automated CI validation. Additionally, the shell command used to execute the check is currently inefficient and suppresses potential errors, which could lead to silent failures in the future.
About this PR
- Although the PR description mentions verification against 6 test cases, no sample files containing these invisible characters (e.g., a test directory with files containing NBSP, BOM, or NUL bytes) were added to the repository. Adding these would provide a permanent regression suite for this CI gate.
Test suggestions
- Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using the new codepoint pattern
- Verify detection of C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
- Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (BOM, U+FEFF)
- Verify that files containing NUL bytes are scanned and not skipped (test 'grep -a' functionality)

Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using the new codepoint pattern
2. Verify detection of C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
3. Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (BOM, U+FEFF)
4. Verify that files containing NUL bytes are scanned and not skipped (test 'grep -a' functionality)

🟡 MEDIUM RISK
Suggestion: Optimize the search by batching files and removing redundant flags. Using -exec ... + is significantly faster than -exec ... \; as it avoids spawning a new process for every file. Additionally, removing 2>/dev/null ensures that PCRE compilation errors or permission issues are visible in the CI logs. The -a flag correctly ensures files with NUL bytes are processed.

124-124: Restore the separate leading-BOM check.
PATTERNSincludes\x{feff}, but this does not cover a UTF-8 BOM at the start of a file. The current scan has no first-three-byte check, so a file beginning withEF BB BFcan pass the gate. Add a per-file leading-BOM check and keep\x{feff}for BOM characters inside a file.

Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.
Root cause
The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (
\xc2\xa0) whilegrep -Pmatches characters. Bytesc2 a0are one character U+00A0;\xc2\xa0asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.Only
\x00worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.Fixed
\x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1Fadded (TAB/LF/CR excluded)grep -a— without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binaryThe C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.
