feat(SESF-66): strip harness boilerplate from turns at ingest - #89
Part 2 of SESF-66. Part 1 (#88) skipped Codex external-import turns. This PR stops harness text from being indexed. It does not rewrite rows that are already indexed (see "Not in this PR").
Change
boilerplate.py (new, pure): strip(text) -> (clean_text, removed). It strips the user and assistant parts of a turn separately.
Removed: task notifications, side-session events, CI-monitor events, system reminders, <wake> and <project_claude_message> wrappers, compaction summaries, local-command caveat/stdout/stderr, and ! shell stdout/stderr.
Kept as markers: a slash-command echo becomes [/name args] and shell input becomes [! command], so a turn stays findable by command and the issue IDs in command args are still extracted.
Prose stays: a block counts only when its tag opens a line, so tags quoted in a sentence are left alone. A block cut off by truncation runs to the section end.
rag_engine._apply_boilerplate runs once in add_turns, after the doc_id dedup and before redaction and issue-ID extraction, so every provider and add_turns_async are covered. doc_ids do not change.
A turn that stripping leaves under 20 characters is dropped. Short turns with no boilerplate keep their current behaviour.
Every rule match inside assistant text was checked by sample: all of them are tool results quoting harness text, not prose.
Not in this PR
Already-indexed rows keep their boilerplate. Rewriting them means re-embedding the changed rows (upsert_document) and deleting the rows left empty, chunked under the MLX crash limit. That fits one pass with SESF-62's long-turn re-embed, so it is planned as a follow-up.
Tests
tests/test_boilerplate.py: one fixture per rule, built from real shapes, plus nesting, truncation, prose mentions, repeats, an all-boilerplate turn and the indented command echo. Hook tests cover all three sinks, issue-ID ordering, strip-before-redaction, the length floor, the off switch and the get_stats surface.
ruff check . is clean. pytest: 722 passed, 120 skipped.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Newly ingested conversations are cleaned of harness boilerplate, with command echoes represented by markers. Turns that are too short after cleaning are not stored.
Boilerplate removal and dropped-turn counts are available in ingestion statistics. Cleaning can be turned off with a configuration setting.
Previously indexed conversations are unchanged; they retain their existing content until re-embedded.
Documentation
Added guidance on boilerplate cleaning, configuration, statistics, and its effect on previously indexed content.
Search hits led with harness text: task notifications, CI-monitor
events, slash-command echoes, compaction summaries and system reminders.
boilerplate.strip removes them per section (user and assistant parts).
A block only counts when its tag opens a line, so tags quoted in prose
stay. Command echoes become a [/name args] marker and shell input a
[! command] marker, so the turn stays findable by command.
rag_engine._apply_boilerplate calls it once in add_turns, after the
doc_id dedup and before redaction and issue-ID extraction. A turn that
stripping leaves under 20 characters is dropped; other short turns keep
their current behaviour. SESSIONFLOW_STRIP_BOILERPLATE=off disables it,
and get_stats reports per-rule counts and dropped turns under
"boilerplate".
Dry run over the live FTS rows: 10,283 of 75,951 rows change, 2,335
would be dropped, and the changed rows shrink from 35.7M to 7.8M chars.
Only 18 rows keep a tag, each quoted inside a sentence. Rows already
indexed are not rewritten here; that needs a re-embed pass.
The change adds harness boilerplate stripping during ingestion. It cleans configured blocks and command echoes, drops stripped turns under 20 characters, and reports removal and drop counts. Documentation describes the rules, opt-out setting, and effect on previously indexed rows.
Adds ordered rules to remove harness blocks and replace command echoes. The tests cover matching, counts, and cases such as truncated or nested blocks.

Applies stripping after deduplication and before later ingestion processing. Turns under 20 characters after stripping are dropped. Stats report removal and drop counts. Tests cover ingestion, opt-out, and stats; documentation describes the behavior.

Correct the old-row cleanup guidance: re-embedding does not remove stored boilerplate. This is a bounded documentation risk, not an identified ingestion blocker.
