Request components dropped every false value and sent most booleans as strings. Only was_authorized, is_gift, and has_gift_message kept true as a JSON boolean, so was_3d_secure_successful and boolean custom inputs went out as "true". Keep any true value as a JSON boolean, and send false for boolean inputs and custom inputs. Other inputs still omit false. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A subclass of a class that calls enum_accessor raised NoMethodError when it set the attribute. The setter looked up the permitted values on the receiving class, whose mapping does not hold them. The setter and the *_values method now use the values captured at declaration, and mapping includes the attributes declared on parent classes. The *_values method is now a singleton method of the declaring class, which subclasses inherit. It was an instance method of Class, so every class responded to it. Add the phone_verification_method, phone_was_verification_successful, and phone_verification_time attributes to Billing and Shipping. They describe the most recent verification of the billing or shipping phone number. Both components share them through Addressable. The method must be :delivered_code, :network, or :other. With validation on, the result must be a boolean and the time must be an RFC 3339 date-time. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
validate_rfc3339 used only DateTime.rfc3339. DateTime accepts hour 24, second 60, UTC offsets of 24 hours or more, and a lowercase t or z. The web service rejects them. DateTime also rejects strings longer than 128 characters, such as a long fraction of a second that the web service accepts. Before 1582, it uses the Julian calendar, so it accepts 1500-02-29. JRuby ignores the limit: nil option of DateTime.rfc3339. The validator now matches the format the web service requires, then uses Date.valid_date? with the Gregorian calendar to reject dates that do not exist. This applies to Event#time and the new phone_verification_time attributes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Low: This checks only the RFC 3339 format of phone_verification_time. It does not check the range that STF-1906 and the doc comment above give: not before 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z and not more than two days in the future.
With validation on, Billing.new(phone_verification_time: '1500-01-01T00:00:00Z') and '9999-12-31T23:59:59Z' pass and are sent. The web service then ignores the field and returns only a warning, so a caller who turned validation on does not get an error.
If the client should catch this, add a range check (compare in UTC, with the upper bound as now + 2 days). If the range is left to the server on purpose, as for /event/time, consider saying so in the doc comment.

No client checks this range, the same as for /event/time. e7a2ab4 adds to the doc comment that the web service ignores a time outside the range and returns a warning.

Low: The enum setter, which the new phone_verification_method uses, still drops false and fails on true:
Billing.new(phone_verification_method: false).to_jsonreturns{}. The value is silently dropped. This disagrees with the CHANGELOG, which says that onlynilinputs are now omitted.Billing.new(phone_verification_method: true)raisesNoMethodError: undefined method 'intern' for true, even with validation off. It does not raiseNotEnumValueError.
Consider value.nil? instead of truthiness here, and raise NotEnumValueError for a value that is not a String or Symbol.

Done in e51b315. Only nil unsets the value. Any value that is not a permitted String or Symbol raises NotEnumValueError, with validation on or off.

Low: validate_credit_card_token converts the value to a string before it checks it, so true and false pass validation. They are now sent as JSON booleans for /credit_card/token.
With validation on, CreditCard.new(token: true).to_json returns {"token" => true} with no error. Before this PR, the token was sent as the string "true". Now the web service rejects the boolean and drops the token. This disagrees with the CHANGELOG entry that says true or false for a non-boolean input now raises InvalidInputError.

Low: Only validate_string rejects booleans. Other validators that convert the value to a string, and fields with no validator, still accept booleans. Because represent now sends a boolean as a JSON boolean for every field, these fields can send a JSON boolean where the web service expects a string:
Device#tracking_tokenis not validated inDevice#validate.Report::Transactionnotesandchargeback_codeaccept booleans. With validation on,Transaction.new(transaction_id: false)raisesNoMethodErroronfalse.empty?(transaction.rb:101), notInvalidInputError.
So the CHANGELOG line "With validation on, true or false for a non-boolean input now raises InvalidInputError" is not true for all inputs. One option is a single boolean check that every non-boolean validator uses. Another is a list of the boolean fields that represent checks, so that a boolean in any other field is sent as a string, as before.

Fixed in 7aef50f. Every non-boolean validator now calls validate_not_boolean, and so do tracking_token, notes, chargeback_code and transaction_id. transaction_id: false raises InvalidInputError.

Nit: This before hook turns on global validation, but there is no after hook to turn it off again. The new base_spec.rb block does reset it. Because billing_spec.rb and shipping_spec.rb now run these shared examples, Minfraud.enable_validation stays on for spec files that run later, so results can depend on file order. Some existing spec files have the same problem, but the new shared examples add two more places.

Nit: *_values returns the same unfrozen array that the setter uses to check values, and mapping returns a shallow copy that shares those arrays. After Billing.phone_verification_method_values << :sms, Billing.new(phone_verification_method: :sms) is accepted and sends "sms". Freezing values when it is created (assignable_values.map(&:intern).freeze) prevents this. The old code had the same exposure through mapping, but this is an easy fix while the code changes.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nit: The justification for the rubocop disable ("set during class definition and then only read") is no longer fully true. mapping calls declared_mapping, which writes @declared_mapping = {} at run time, on the first call, for a class that declares no enum of its own (for example Billing). mapping also builds a new merged hash on every call, where the old code returned a memoized hash. In mapping, reading @declared_mapping || {} would avoid the write at run time.

Nit: The repo CLAUDE.md says "Validation happens in setters before assignment" and shows a def new_field=(value) setter that calls validate_*. The new fields use a plain attr_accessor, so billing.phone_verification_time = 'garbage' or billing.phone_was_verification_successful = 'yes' after construction skips validation. The existing components work the same way, so this matches the code but not CLAUDE.md. You could update CLAUDE.md to match the code, or leave both as they are.

Nit: The [true, false].include?(value) check now appears in four places: here and in validates.rb at lines 34, 179, and 315. A small shared helper would prevent the copies from drifting apart.

Nit: populate! now computes key before the nil check, so every nil instance variable does a regex gsub that is not used. Most components have many nil instance variables. Computing key after the early return, and using delete_prefix('@') in place of gsub(/@/, ''), is simpler and does less work.

With validation on, some inputs still accepted true and false. validate_credit_card_token converted a boolean to a string and accepted it. Device#tracking_token and the chargeback_code, notes, and transaction_id fields of Report::Transaction had no validation. Report::Transaction raised NoMethodError for transaction_id: false. Add validate_not_boolean and the boolean? helper. Every non-boolean validator now calls validate_not_boolean, and the fields above use it directly. The server documents no length limit for those fields, so the check is for type only. represent, validate_boolean, and validate_custom_input_value now use boolean?. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The enum setter used truthiness. It ignored false, so phone_verification_method: false sent nothing. It raised NoMethodError for true and other values without intern. The setter now treats only nil as unset and raises NotEnumValueError for any other value that is not a permitted String or Symbol. Freeze the permitted values so that *_values << :x cannot change what the setter accepts. mapping now reads @declared_mapping and does not set it at run time. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Base#populate! built the key before it skipped a nil value. Build it
after the nil check, and use delete_prefix('@') to remove only the
leading @.

The shared examples turned on Minfraud.enable_validation and did not turn it off. Later specs then ran with validation on. An around hook now restores the previous value after each example. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
