Resolves #2669.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Protocol validation now accepts unknown, http11, http2, and http3 regardless of letter case. An empty protocol remains valid. Unsupported values, including http10, continue to return an error. This makes accepted protocol names consistent across capitalization while preserving validation for values outside the supported set.

Walkthrough

Protocol validation now accepts http2 and http3, including case variants. Table-driven tests cover empty, supported, and unsupported protocol values.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a97e8

The newly accepted protocol options do not reliably provide the protocols they advertise, and mixed-case HTTP11 may not enforce its requested behavior. Resolve these issues before relying on the expanded protocol support.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a97e8

The additional protocol names continue through the existing HTTP client without introducing a separate transport or privilege boundary. However, accepting a protocol name does not ensure that protocol is used, and security coverage remains incomplete.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure change is that callers selecting http2 or http3 can proceed past validation. Those configurations enter the existing client path; inspection did not identify additional transport authority or a new service boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected ordinary request path retains its existing dialer, network-policy, proxy, TLS, and redirect configuration. Adding accepted protocol values does not replace that path with an alternate transport that bypasses those controls.

Explanation

Issue #2669 requires protocol validation to accept http2 and http3. The implementation adds those values, but runner/options_test.go expects unknown to fail even though the existing validation accepts unknown; that test case is incorrect. The issue also requires ALPN configuration and effective transport TLSClientConfig settings to reach the TLS handshake. common/httpx/httpx.go still has no NextProtos configuration, and buildTLSDialer still calls DialTLS without the transport TLS configuration.

Resolution

Change the unknown test case to expect no error. Implement ALPN selection for the protocol paths. Pass the effective transport TLSClientConfig to the TLS dial operation. Add focused tests for the ALPN and TLS configuration behavior.

Normalize accepted protocol values before the runtime handoff.

Validation accepts mixed-case values, but runner/runner.go passes the original value to httpxOptions.Protocol. The exact HTTP11 comparison in common/httpx/httpx.go can therefore miss the branch that disables HTTP/2. Normalize the value after validation so all accepted protocols reach exact-value dispatch consistently.

runner/options.go:874-875
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Make normal http2 requests negotiate ALPN h2.

http2 now passes validation, but normal requests use a custom DialTLSContext that does not receive the transport's TLSClientConfig. The fastdialer TLS configuration also does not set NextProtos to h2. An HTTPS endpoint that requires ALPN h2 can reject the handshake, while a permissive endpoint can receive HTTP/1.1. This violates the documented -pr contract, which defines the value as the protocol to use.

Update the common/httpx TLS-dialer integration so normal http2 requests propagate the configured TLS settings and advertise ALPN h2 without breaking the existing impersonation path.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Implement the HTTP/3 transport before accepting http3.

-pr http3 passes validation and reaches httpx.New as httpx.Options.Protocol. The common/httpx client has no HTTP3 transport or QUIC path, so normal requests can only use the existing TCP transport. An HTTP/3-only endpoint therefore remains inaccessible.

Add HTTP/3 transport selection in common/httpx. This correction is separate from HTTP/2 ALPN and TLS configuration handling.

Closing this. #2671 is merged and already accepts http2 and http3, and it sends ALPN for those flags. This pull request only changes validation.
