Fail dependent tasks instead of killing the file-based scheduler thread - #1081
Conversation
When a task failed before submission (serialization error or an error in execute_function) and a later task depended on it, execute_tasks_h5 raised inside the scheduler thread (KeyError or the re-raised original exception), so all pending futures never resolved and shutdown hung. - _convert_args_and_kwargs now raises the exception of an already failed (or cancelled) input future, for args, kwargs and FutureSelector inputs, and resolves duplicate futures instead of blocking on them. - execute_tasks_h5 fails only the current task's future on unexpected errors and always calls task_done(). - With disable_dependencies=True a task with future inputs is no longer submitted after its future was failed. - FutureSelector no longer calls Future.__init__(), which was forwarded to the wrapped future and reset an already completed future to pending. - dump() serializes all values before opening the HDF5 file, so a pickling error no longer leaves an empty input file behind. Do not store a failed submission in memory_dict. Doing so leaves duplicate futures pending forever and can block the scheduler thread.
Line 188 stores an already-failed future in memory_dict[task_key]. It does not set file_name_dict[task_key] or cache_dir_dict[task_key]. Assume a second task with the same task_key reaches the queue before the next _refresh_memory_dict call. The usual cause is two identical submit() calls in a row.
- The second task takes the
elif memory_dict[task_key] != task_dict["future"]branch (Line 197). Its future goes intoduplicate_dict[task_key]. _refresh_memory_dictonly calls_check_task_outputfor primary futures that are not done. The primary future is already done, so it is dropped, and the code never resolves or deletes the duplicate entry. The duplicate future stays pending forever. Shutdown still returns, so the user'sresult()call hangs. Issue#1080reports this same symptom.- Assume a later task depends on that duplicate future.
_convert_futurefinds the duplicate induplicate_dict, butk in file_name_dictis false for this key. The code then reachesreturn arg.result()(Line 408). That call blocks the scheduler thread on a future that only the scheduler thread can resolve. The whole executor deadlocks.
The failed future does not need an entry in memory_dict. Dependents of the failed future already fail through the future.done() check in _convert_future. If you remove Line 188, the next identical task goes through submission again and fails on its own future.

Use an executable failure for the no-cache-key case.
use_unpicklable_global is serialized by value because TaskSchedulerBase registers the test module with cloudpickle. The no-cache-key case therefore raises TypeError while generating the task key. The cache-key case raises the same error while writing the HDF5 input. Neither case executes the submitted function.
Use get_error for the no-cache-key case so this test covers a runtime task failure and asserts the propagated ValueError.

Fixes #1080
Problem
If task A fails before it is submitted and task B takes A's future as input,
execute_tasks_h5raises inside the scheduler thread. With acache_key, that's aKeyErrorfromfile_name_dict. Without one, A's own exception is re-raised byfuture.result(). The thread dies, the remaining futures never resolve, andshutdown()hangs.Changes
_convert_args_and_kwargs: one helper now handles both args and kwargs. If an input future (plain orFutureSelector) is already done with an exception, or was cancelled, the helper raises that exception, so the dependent task fails with A's original error. A pending duplicate future is now resolved through its primary task's output file. Before, the thread blocked on.result(), which could deadlock it.execute_tasks_h5: the per-task body is wrapped so an unexpected error fails only that task's future.task_done()is always called.disable_dependencies=True: a task with future inputs is no longer submitted after its future has been failed. The orphaned job could race with later tasks that had the same hash. This madetest_submit_dependency_with_keyword_arg_futureflaky.FutureSelector: no longer callsFuture.__init__(). Its attributes were forwarded to the wrapped future and reset an already completed future to PENDING, soget_item_from_future/split_futureon a finished future hung forever.dump(): pickles all values before opening the HDF5 file, so it no longer leaves an empty 800-byte_i.h5behind.Tests
test_submit_dependency_on_failed_task: covers the issue reproducer with and withoutcache_key. The dependency is passed as an arg, as a kwarg, through aFutureSelector, and through a further downstream task. An independent task still completes.test_submit_dependency_on_duplicate_task,test_convert_args_and_kwargs_selector,test_convert_args_and_kwargs_failed_future,test_hdf_unpicklable,test_split_completed_future.All new tests fail or hang on
