The grammar-binding wizard now offers XML catalog entries alongside local and remote grammar sources.
Choose an existing catalog entry, add an entry to an existing catalog, or create a catalog and add an entry. The wizard registers catalogs and binds the XML document through the selected entry.
Entry types are suggested based on the grammar file extension, and the wizard supports identifiers for catalog entries.
Documentation
Added design documentation describing catalog-based grammar binding and its workflows.
The grammar-association wizard now offers catalog entries as a grammar source. It can list and bind existing entries, or guide users through creating or selecting a catalog and adding an entry. Documentation describes the proposed catalog behavior and wizard flow.
Changes: Catalog-Based Grammar Binding
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Catalog entry and binding design docs/design/BindGrammarViaCatalog.md
The design document describes catalog entry types, enumeration and resolution, grammar binding, wizard flows, and implementation phases.
Select and bind catalog entries src/commands/registerCommands.ts, src/commands/serverCommandConstants.ts, docs/BindingWithGrammar.md
The wizard adds a catalog-entry source, presents available entries, and applies server-provided binding edits. The command constants and user documentation cover the catalog-entry option.
Create catalogs and add entries src/commands/registerCommands.ts
The command can create or select a catalog, register it in xml.catalogs, prompt for entry details, add the entry, and apply and save the returned edit.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 00c47
The catalog wizard has recoverable edge cases: overlapping runs can lose a catalog registration, and a failed save can leave a new entry unpersisted while binding continues. Merging requires owner awareness of these limitations; selecting another existing catalog remains available.

The description states that the PR adds a "Catalog entry" option to the "Bind to grammar/schema..." wizard. It lists picking existing catalog entries, creating entries, creating and registering catalog files, auto-detecting entry types, and adding a design document. These items match the changeset. The description also notes a dependency on lemminx PR #1891.

Align Section 5.1.5 with the implemented command contract.
The client and LemMinX server use [documentURI, entryType, bindingType, identifier, targetURI, uriValue]. Section 5.1.5 documents a different order and omits two arguments. Update the design document; changing the client order would break the current server contract.

Await the xml.catalogs update and stop the bind flow on failure.
VS Code can reject a ConfigurationTarget.Workspace update when no workspace is open. The catalog flow currently ignores that promise and can continue with an unregistered catalog.
Return the update promise, await it in both catalog flows, and return after showing the error.
Apply the same change to selectExistingCatalogFlow.

Hi Angelo, I tested the catalog wizard with DTD and XSD, and the main flow works well. The catalog is created, entries are added, and the binding works through the catalog.
Two things I noticed:
When I add a new entry through the wizard, the DOCTYPE gets the full file:///Users/... path. When I pick an existing entry, it gets just “note.dtd”, which matches the design doc.
Once a catalog with entries exists, the “Which catalog” menu has no “Select existing catalog...” option, so I can’t add an entry to another existing catalog file.
The existing try/catch starts after the local and remote selection steps and covers only the standard and file-association binding calls. The Catalog entry call is outside that error boundary. A rejection from workspace.fs.writeFile in createCatalogFlow or from workspace.getConfiguration().update(..., ConfigurationTarget.Workspace) in addToValueToSettingArray can therefore escape the unawaited command handler without user feedback. In createCatalogFlow, the catalog file is written before the configuration update, so the file can remain unregistered when the update fails.

Bind a newly added entry with the value stored in the catalog, not the full grammar URI.
Line 635 sets uriValue to grammarURI. For a local file, grammarURI is a full file:///... URI. Entries listed by the server carry uriValue as written in the catalog, for example note.dtd. The wizard therefore inserts a different DOCTYPE or xsi value for a new entry than for an existing entry. This matches the behavior reported in the PR comments.
Use the value that the server wrote into the catalog. Either derive the catalog-relative path for local files, or call LIST_BINDABLE_CATALOG_ENTRIES after the save and select the matching entry. The matching entry has the same catalogURI, entryType, and identifier.

Make the binding examples match newly added entries.
These examples show relative foo.dtd and foo.xsd targets, but the new-entry flow can write the full file:///... URI into the generated binding. Because the text presents these as resulting bindings, it misleads users. Either normalize the generated target URI or document the actual output.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The entry-type picker offers public, system, and uri for every grammar, although the supplied binding design describes DOCTYPE bindings for public/system entries and XSD or RNG bindings for URI entries.
The wizard may create a catalog entry that the association command cannot turn into a valid binding for that grammar.
This can occur when: A user chooses public for an XSD, or uri for a DTD.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
selectExistingCatalogFlow registers any selected .xml file before checking that it is an XML catalog or that an entry can be added, and does not undo registration when addition fails.
An invalid path remains in xml.catalogs, potentially causing subsequent catalog listing or resolution errors.
This can occur when: A user selects an ordinary XML document or an invalid catalog in the file dialog.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
createCatalogFlow treats CREATE_CATALOG's successful result as text to encode and write, while the supplied design specifies a CreateFile plus TextDocumentEdit result. If the server returns those operations, the fallback is not entered and their object representation is written instead of a catalog.
The newly registered catalog file contains invalid XML, and adding entries or resolving bindings through it fails.
This can occur when: A successful catalog-creation command returns the edit operations described in the design.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Converting the server's TextDocumentEdit into an unversioned WorkspaceEdit discards its document-version constraint; a concurrent edit may make the returned ranges stale.
The binding text can be inserted at the wrong position or replace unrelated XML.
This can occur when: The XML document changes after the server computes an association edit but before workspace.applyEdit applies it.

Serialize xml.catalogs read-modify-write updates.
addToValueToSettingArray reads the full array, appends one path, and writes the whole array back. Two catalog flows that overlap can both read the same array, so the later write drops the other path. Queue these updates in one in-process chain so that each read starts after the previous write completes.

Check the catalog save result before binding the document.
catalogDoc.save() runs after the catalog edit is applied to the editor buffer, but its result is ignored. The applyEdit failure directly above returns early, and the save failure does not. Binding then proceeds, so the XML document can reference a catalog entry that exists only in the unsaved catalog buffer. The entry is then missing from the catalog file on disk.
save() also returns false for a document that was not dirty. Checking isDirty after the save shows whether the entry was persisted.
