**Code-set bulk mode bypasses CI refusal**
When CI is set and a screenshot specifies `record: :all` while `SNAP_DIFF_ACCEPT_SCREENSHOTS` is truthy, `resolve_record_mode` retains a per-screenshot `record: :all`, but `refuse_bulk_record_under_ci!` skips the refusal whenever the environment variable is truthy, regardless of where that mode came from. The screenshot is re-recorded on CI despite the documented refusal for a code-set per-screenshot mode.
Track whether `:all` came from the per-screenshot option and refuse that code-set mode on CI even when the run-level variable is set.

**Concurrent env changes bypass CI guard**
When another thread changes `ENV["SNAP_DIFF_ACCEPT_SCREENSHOTS"]` between matcher initialization and assertion building, `ScreenshotMatcher` resolves `record_mode` during initialization but checks `SNAP_DIFF_ACCEPT_SCREENSHOTS` again when building the assertion. If one thread enables the variable temporarily after another thread resolves a code-configured `:all`, that second matcher sees the new value and skips the CI refusal, accepting differences the refusal was meant to block; changing the variable the other way causes a run-level `:all` to fail unexpectedly.
Resolve the accept-switch value and its source once per matcher, then use that same snapshot for both mode selection and the CI guard.

Needs a human reviewer. 2 findings to address first, and if the opt-in is applied too broadly or selects :all incorrectly, changed screenshots can be accepted and their baseline PNGs rewritten, potentially leaving an unintended visual change in a commit. Reverting the code does not restore those files, but the baseline changes are bounded and can be reviewed and restored through version control.

After a redesign that changed forty screenshots, `record: :all`
re-records them in one run. The gem has no runner to hang a flag on, so
the README asked every app to write the same adapter in test_helper.rb.
The gem now reads the switch itself:
SNAP_DIFF_ACCEPT_SCREENSHOTS=1 bin/rails test:system
Precedence, first match wins: `record:` on the screenshot, the variable
(`:all`), `SnapDiff.config.record =`, `fail_if_new` when set, then the
CI default (`:none` under CI, `:once` off it). The variable states the
intent of this run, so it outranks permanent settings: a suite that pins
`record = :none` accepts with the same command, and nothing has to be
unset or wrapped in a conditional. A per-screenshot `record:` stays on
top because it is written at the call site.
Truthy means `1` or `true`, any case, the rule
SNAP_DIFF_SILENCE_DEPRECATIONS already follows; `0`, `false` and empty
leave the mode alone. A switch that stops failures should not be turned
on by a value that reads as "off". The rule lives in one place
(Removal.truthy_env?, the file every entry point loads) and both
variables use it.
With the variable unset nothing changes: no `record` line still reads
`:none` under CI and `:once` off it. The README and configuration.md
drop the adapter snippet and document the chain in one place.
Not changed: the refusal of `record: :all` under CI, so the variable
selects the mode but a CI job still cannot use it. That is the next
commit.
A CI job that re-renders baselines in the environment that verifies them could not use `record: :all`: the matcher refuses it whenever ENV["CI"] is set. The documented recipe got around that with `CI: ""` (the job pretends it is not CI, so reports stop embedding images) and `continue-on-error: true` (every other failing test in the job is ignored along with the one that is meant to fail). The refusal protects a real case: a `record = :all` committed in test_helper.rb would make every PR check accept every change. That case stays refused. What changes is that a `:all` the operator asked for on this run, through SNAP_DIFF_ACCEPT_SCREENSHOTS, gets through: - the guard returns early when the variable is truthy; - a `:all` written in code (a config line or a per-screenshot option) still raises on CI, and its message now names the variable; - the default under CI stays `:none`; nothing else about the modes moves. The recipe in docs/ci-integration.md sets the variable on the record job: no `continue-on-error`, no `CI: ""`, and an unrelated failing test still fails the job. It also says what the minimal recipe does not do: it keeps the committed PNGs, not the report or the diff images, and a push with the default GITHUB_TOKEN does not start the ordinary verification workflow. Tests: unit cases for the variable under CI and for the refusal of a falsy-variable per-screenshot `:all`; two subprocess runs of the documented accept run (CI=1 plus the variable), one that must exit successfully and one with an unrelated failing test that must not.

Problem
record: :allis the bulk-accept verb: after a redesign that changed forty screenshots, one run re-records them all. Two things make it awkward to use:test_helper.rb, and a suite that pinsrecord = :nonehas to unset it first.:allwheneverENV["CI"]is non-empty. That protects against a:allleft in committed config, but it also blocks the job that most needs the mode: the CI job that re-renders baselines in the same environment that verifies them. The documented recipe gets around the refusal withcontinue-on-error: true(any unrelated failing test is ignored too) andCI: ""(the run pretends it is not CI, so the report stops embedding images).Change
Two commits, both additive.
SNAP_DIFF_ACCEPT_SCREENSHOTS=1selectsrecord: :allfor one run. Read by the gem. Precedence, first match wins:record:on the screenshot, the variable, config.record =,fail_if_newwhen set, the CI default. The variable states the intent of this run, so it outranks the permanent settings; with it unset nothing changes.1andtrueturn it on; any other value is the same as not setting it (the rule the gem's other switch already follows, now one shared helper). README and docs/configuration.md drop the adapter snippet; docs/configuration.md documents the chain once and the other pages link to it.The variable records on CI too. The refusal stays and gains one early return: a
:allthe operator asked for on this run gets through; a:allwritten in code (config line or per-screenshot option) is still refused, and its message names the variable. The recipe in docs/ci-integration.md sets the variable on the record job, with nocontinue-on-errorand noCI: "", and says what it does not do (keep the report, trigger the verification workflow after aGITHUB_TOKENpush).Why merge
A deliberate recording job should work without pretending it is not CI or ignoring genuine test failures. Ordinary CI keeps its strict default, and without the switch a code-configured
:allkeeps being refused. The contract is narrow on purpose: the gem reads an environment variable and cannot tell one job from another, so keeping the switch off verification jobs is the caller's responsibility, and the docs say so next to the recipe.Drawbacks
SNAP_DIFF_SILENCE_DEPRECATIONS) follows the same rule.:all; the difference is that it has to be set on purpose, by name, and the summary line names each re-recorded file.record = :none. The alternative, the explicit mode winning, means a strict suite must still write an adapter to record at all, which is the boilerplate this PR removes. Not changed
