Adds an optional click-to-accept reviewer for pull requests, hosted for free on the project's own GitHub Pages.

  • The HTML reporter now writes snap_diff_manifest.json beside the report: each changed or new screenshot, its path from the git root, and its file in the report directory.
  • lib/snap_diff/review/index.html ships in the gem. A reviewer opens it from the PR comment, pastes a fine-grained token, and sees every changed/new screenshot next to the committed baseline. Submit makes one commit of the exact CI pixels to the PR branch and posts one comment listing what was accepted and rejected.
  • .github/actions/deploy-review-page publishes the page from the locked gem version to gh-pages:snap-diff/index.html; a consumer workflow re-runs it when Gemfile.lock changes, so a gem bump updates the page.
  • upload-screenshots adds a "Review & accept" link when the page is installed.

Security: the link's run, artifact and PR are checked against each other before anything is shown; only .png/.webp image bytes at screenshot paths can be written; the branch update never forces; the token stays in memory for one page load; strict CSP with a script hash.

Same-repo PRs only for now. Docs: docs/ci-integration.md, "Accept or reject screenshots in the browser".

Summary by Sourcery

Enable reviewers to approve screenshot diffs from GitHub-hosted reports and commit the exact reviewed pixels back to same-repository pull requests.

New Features:

  • Add browser-based screenshot review controls that let reviewers accept or reject changed and new baselines and submit the decisions through a pull request comment or GitHub issue.
  • Add a GitHub Actions workflow and reusable action that validate reviewed screenshot artifacts and commit accepted PNG/WebP baselines to same-repository pull requests.
  • Generate screenshot manifests containing reviewable files, repository-relative targets, and content hashes for automated acceptance.

Enhancements:

  • Expose review guidance in CI summaries, pull request comments, the README, changelog, and CI integration documentation.
  • Extend report cleanup and ignore guidance to cover generated screenshot manifests.
  • Add safeguards for artifact provenance, permissions, branch updates, file paths, image formats, hashes, Git LFS files, and workflow logging.

CI:

  • Configure the test workflow to provide the screenshot report path and run the screenshot acceptance workflow for issue and pull request comment commands.

Documentation:

  • Document how to install and use browser-based screenshot acceptance from pull requests, including same-repository and path requirements.

Tests:

  • Add integration coverage for browser review controls, generated commands, issue links, superseded captures, and local-report behavior.
  • Add unit coverage for command parsing, manifest validation, artifact selection, security checks, and safe baseline commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • CI screenshot reports now include Accept and Reject controls, keyboard shortcuts, and copyable review commands.
    • Reviewers can accept eligible screenshot updates from a pull request comment or a prefilled GitHub issue; accepted changes are committed to the pull request branch.
    • Reports provide links between superseded captures and explain when a capture cannot be reviewed.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance for enabling screenshot acceptance, including required permissions and workflow configuration.
    • Documented the screenshot review manifest generated with HTML reports.

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
lib/snap_diff/reporters/html.rb:339-341
With `embed_images: true`, two tests that capture the same new screenshot name can leave the first image displayed but accept the second image. `add_entries` keeps the first entry, including its embedded image. `file_sha256` later hashes the overwritten file when the report is finalized. The handler commits those later bytes, so its hash check passes even though the reviewer saw different pixels.

Keep the displayed capture and accepted bytes together, or replace the retained entry when the file is captured again.

### Issue 2
.github/actions/accept-screenshots/accept_screenshots.rb:416-417
If posting the issue reply or closing the issue fails after the push, `finish` raises before `dispatch_ci` runs. The screenshots are already committed, but `GITHUB_TOKEN` pushes do not start CI automatically. A maintainer must then start CI by hand.

Make these issue updates best-effort so their failure cannot skip the configured CI run.

### Issue 3
lib/snap_diff/reporters/templates/report.html.erb:533-535
`Show it` cannot reliably open the later capture while a search is active. If the later entry's name does not match the search, `selectItem` replaces its index with an entry from the filtered list. The button then stays on the earlier capture or opens an unrelated screenshot.

Clear the search and rebuild the list before selecting `superseded_by`.

### Issue 4
docs/ci-integration.md:undefined-299
Copying `save_path` into `screenshots-path` does not always work. The action needs a path from the git root with no leading `./`.

If an app lives in `apps/web`, `save_path: doc/screenshots` produces manifest paths under `apps/web/doc/screenshots`. Following this instruction then makes every acceptance fail. A leading `./`, as used in this repository's test setup, is also refused.

Document the git-root-relative path requirement and show a subdirectory example.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Adds screenshot decisions to CI reports and applies accepted files through GitHub Actions.

  • CI screenshot reports let reviewers mark images and build a review command.
  • A review command commits selected screenshot bytes to its pull request.
  • Screenshot cleanup also removes the generated manifest.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds CI-only screenshot review controls and a manifest to generated HTML reports. Reviewers can submit acceptance commands through pull-request comments or issues. A GitHub Actions workflow validates requests and artifacts before committing eligible screenshot files to the pull-request branch.

Changes: Screenshot Acceptance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate screenshot review manifest
lib/snap_diff/reporters/html.rb, test/unit/reporters/html_reporter_test.rb, docs/reporters.md, .gitignore, docs/organization.md, README.md, Rakefile
The reporter adds acceptance metadata for eligible captures and writes snap_diff_manifest.json. Tests cover manifest contents and filtering. Documentation and cleanup patterns include the manifest.
Render screenshot review controls
lib/snap_diff/reporters/templates/report.html.erb, test/integration/review_controls_test.rb, test/unit/reporters/html_reporter_test.rb
CI reports provide accept and reject controls, track decisions by file, and generate copyable commands. Tests cover review interactions and entries without reviewable captures.
Validate and commit accepted screenshots
.github/actions/accept-screenshots/accept_screenshots.rb, .github/actions/accept-screenshots/action.yml, .github/workflows/snap-diff-accept.yml, test/unit/accept_screenshots_test.rb, docs/ci-integration.md
The action validates permissions, pull requests, runs, artifacts, image bytes, paths, and hashes. It stages verified image bytes and pushes only if the branch remains at the reviewed head.
Connect screenshot reports to acceptance
.github/actions/upload-screenshots/action.yml, .github/workflows/test.yml, docs/ci-integration.md, CHANGELOG.md, README.md
The upload action adds acceptance instructions for same-repository pull requests. The test workflow sets the screenshot report path. Documentation describes the workflow and its requirements.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR adds an end-to-end browser workflow for reviewing screenshot diffs: CI emits a constrained manifest, a GitHub Pages-hosted static page verifies the linked run/artifact/PR and image inputs, reviewers accept or reject captures, and accepted pixels are committed atomically to the PR branch with a summary comment. Supporting workflows publish the page from the locked gem version, CI links to it when installed, and documentation and tests cover deployment, manifest generation, browser behavior, security validation, and CSP integrity.

Getting Help

Comment thread lib/snap_diff/reporters/templates/report.html.erb Outdated
pftg added 8 commits October 22, 2026 10:22
Lists each changed and new screenshot with the repo path a reviewer
would commit it to and its file relative to the report directory, so a
page reading the uploaded report artifact can accept it without
re-running the suite.
One self-contained HTML file, shipped in the gem, for a project to host
on its GitHub Pages. A reviewer pastes a fine-grained token, the page
downloads the CI run's report artifact, shows each changed or new
screenshot next to the committed baseline, and on submit commits the
accepted captures to the PR branch in one commit and posts one comment
listing what was accepted and rejected.

The link's run, artifact and PR are checked against each other before
anything is shown; only image files at screenshot paths can be written;
the branch update never forces; the token stays in memory for the page
load.
Six browser scenarios: accept/reject commits the exact zip bytes and
comments; a link whose artifact or PR does not belong to the run is
refused before download; a moved branch is not overwritten; a manifest
cannot write non-images or files outside screenshot paths; a bad token
asks again. A unit test keeps the page's CSP script hash in step with
its script.
replaceChildren renders a null child as the text "null"; the parts a
new screenshot lacks (the base/new toggle, the differences heading) are
now left out instead.
The review page commits a screenshot at its manifest path, and the gem
reads baselines with git show HEAD:<path from the git root>. Paths were
relative to SnapDiff.config.root, so a suite whose root is a
subdirectory of the repository (this gem's own, monorepos, engines)
would have been accepted into the wrong file.
…ages

The deploy-review-page action publishes the page shipped in the locked
gem version (either gem name) to gh-pages:snap-diff/index.html, leaving
the rest of that branch alone; a consumer workflow re-runs it when
Gemfile.lock changes, so a gem bump updates the page. This repository
publishes its own copy from lib/ with the page: input.

upload-screenshots adds a Review & accept link to the job summary and PR
comment when the page is installed. Docs cover install, the token to
create, limits and the security model.
The functional job used the default report-path (doc/screenshots), but
the suite's SnapDiff root is test/fixtures/app, so a failing run never
uploaded its HTML report.
Checking for the file on gh-pages linked a 404 whenever Pages serves
another source (this repository served master). Probe the page URL
instead: 200 links, 404 stays silent, anything else warns.

…the report

Real CI output had one baseline captured by six tests and new captures
saved outside the report directory. Accepting two entries for one file
fails the commit, and a capture outside the report is not in the
uploaded artifact. Keep the last capture per path, and leave out
captures the artifact cannot contain.
…ents and docs

Behaviour unchanged: the declared/actual size checks shared by baseline
and artifact downloads now live in one helper; a test line that repeated
the fake's default and doc sentences that said the same thing twice are
gone.

**Write token remains in scratch clone**

When the action runs on a persistent or shared self-hosted runner, or a later step runs untrusted code, `git remote add` stores the write token in `.git/config`, and the action leaves the scratch clone behind. Later jobs or steps can read the token and push to the repository.

Avoid storing the token in the remote URL and remove the scratch clone and any credential data before the job ends.

**Custom domains allow cross-repo reviews**

When a reviewer opens a crafted link on a custom-domain-hosted page for a repository whose name also exists under another owner, `hostAllows` checks only the repository-name path segment on non-GitHub hosts, so a link can set `repo` to a different owner’s repository with the same name. The page then validates and can commit accepted screenshots to that other repository using the reviewer’s token.

Bind the page to its deployed repository identity and reject query repositories that do not match both owner and name, including on custom domains.

**Unrelated run passes PR validation**

When the linked run belongs to another PR or event with the same head SHA as the selected PR, `verifyLink` compares only the SHA and never confirms that the run is associated with the selected PR. The page accepts the run’s screenshot data and can commit it to, and comment on, the wrong PR.

**Closed pull requests still receive commits**

When the PR is closed after the page loads but before the reviewer submits, `submit` uses the branch captured during `verifyLink` and PATCHes its ref without checking the PR again. If the reviewer closes the PR after loading the page, the unchanged branch can still be updated and the accepted screenshots are committed to a closed PR branch.

Re-fetch the PR immediately before updating the ref and abort unless it is still open with the same head SHA and branch.

**Stale report is uploaded for current run**

When a reused workspace or persistent runner retains a previous report and a later run has no report entries, `HTML#finalize` returns without replacing or removing the previous report and manifest. `upload-screenshots` then packages the stale captures under the current run, letting reviewers accept pixels from an earlier run against the current PR head.

**LFS screenshots lose baseline handling**

When a changed screenshot is tracked with Git LFS, the baseline request reads the GitHub file contents directly, while the existing VCS code retrieves Git LFS baselines by smudging pointers. For an LFS-backed screenshot, the page can display the pointer as an image and acceptance writes raw image bytes as an ordinary Git blob instead of updating the LFS object and pointer, so review is misleading and the repository’s LFS storage convention is broken.

Fetch and render the LFS object, and update the LFS object and pointer when committing an accepted capture.

+    }
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**LFS baselines become Git blobs**

When a repository uses Git LFS for screenshot baselines, `submit` posts every accepted image directly to the Git Data API as an ordinary blob, bypassing Git LFS. In repositories with `use_lfs`, accepting a screenshot replaces its LFS pointer with the full image in Git history, so the baseline is no longer stored in LFS.

Handle LFS-tracked paths by uploading the image to LFS and committing its pointer, or refuse acceptance for those paths with a clear explanation.

**Valid screenshot paths are excluded**

When a changed or new screenshot path contains a valid Git filename character outside the ASCII allowlist, `pathProblem` rejects valid paths containing Unicode or other allowed characters, while the reporter records those paths. The review page leaves the screenshots out, so reviewers cannot accept them.

Validate paths against Git’s path constraints rather than an ASCII-only allowlist, while retaining the traversal and `.git*` checks.

**Baseline downloads exceed aggregate cap**

When a report contains enough changed screenshots with large, individually under-20-MB baselines, `baseline` does not add response bytes to `inflatedTotal`, which `inflate` uses for `MAX_TOTAL`. Individually valid baselines are retained as image blobs, so repeated large downloads exceed the aggregate budget and can hang or crash the tab.

Count baseline bytes toward the aggregate limit and stop loading baselines once `MAX_TOTAL` is exceeded.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Committed baselines lose their review comment**

When gitHub applies the ref update but the PATCH response is lost or returns an error, the `PATCH` can advance the PR branch while its response is lost. `submit` rethrows that network error without checking the ref, and the handler unlocks the page; retrying then sees the moved branch and stops before posting the comment, leaving the accepted commit without its review record.

On an ambiguous PATCH failure, fetch the ref and continue to the comment step if it points to the commit just created; otherwise report the unresolved state without offering a blind retry.

<issue_to_address>
**Ambiguous comment submission breaks retries**

When the comment POST has an ambiguous failure, or two tabs submit the same rejection-only review, `submit` has no idempotency or outcome-reconciliation handling, so a retry can create duplicate comments. If accepted screenshots were committed first and the comment is not created, the handler locks the page and leaves the commit without a comment the reviewer can retry.

Make comment submission safely retryable by reconciling ambiguous outcomes and allowing recovery when a commit succeeds but its comment does not.

+  if (accepted.length) {
+    const tree = [];
+    for (const e of accepted) {

<issue_to_address>
**Stale rejections are still posted**

When the PR branch advances after the page loads and the reviewer submits only rejections, the branch-head check runs only when `accepted.length` is nonzero, so a rejection-only submission posts a comment for screenshots from an outdated run and reports the review as done.

Recheck that the PR head still matches the run before posting any review comment, including rejection-only submissions.

**PR comment loses decision labels**

When the posted comment includes both names but assigns them to the wrong decisions, `test_accept_one_reject_one_commits_exact_bytes_and_comments` only checks that the comment contains both screenshot names; a comment that lists both under Accepted, or omits the Rejected section, still passes. The PR comment can therefore misrepresent reviewers’ decisions without failing this test.

Assert that each screenshot name appears under its expected Accepted or Rejected heading.

Needs a human reviewer. 13 findings to address first, and if the manifest checks or GitHub API writes are wrong, accepting a screenshot can commit unintended PNG or WebP bytes to the PR branch and post a review comment. Expose the Accept/Reject toggle state to assistive technology.

The decide buttons toggle a decision. The pressed state is only the CSS class on, so the state is visual only. Screen-reader users cannot tell whether Accept or Reject is active in the viewer. Add ariaPressed to the button props. The native <button> already handles keyboard operation.

♿ Proposed fix
-  const decide = (d, label) => el("button", { type: "button", className: d + (e.decision === d ? " on" : ""), textContent: label, disabled: busy, onclick: () => mark(d) });

The same applies to the viewButton toggles on Line 327.

It worked end to end, but every reviewer had to paste a fine-grained
token on each visit, and a static page cannot hold a secret. Accepting
moves to a PR comment that an Actions workflow carries out with the
repository's own token; the manifest stays.
…cepts

In a CI run (GITHUB_RUN_ID set) each screenshot the manifest lists gets
Accept and Reject (Y / N), and Copy review command copies

…ry's token

/snap-diff accept run=<id> <file>@<sha16>... (copied from the report)
makes an issue_comment workflow commit those captures from that run's
report artifact to the PR branch, reply, and re-run CI. No personal
token: GITHUB_TOKEN does the write.

It runs no PR code (read-tree, hooks and config off), requires write
permission via the API, binds the run to the PR head and each file to
the reviewed SHA-256, writes only PNG/WebP bytes under screenshots-path,
refuses Git LFS paths, stages without filters and pushes with a lease
on the reviewed commit. Replies carry fixed text only.

In the report, only the last capture of a file gets Accept/Reject;
superseded or uncaptured entries say why.

P1 Accepted pixels differ from preview

With embed_images: true, two tests that capture the same new screenshot name can leave the first image displayed but accept the second image. add_entries keeps the first entry, including its embedded image. file_sha256 later hashes the overwritten file when the report is finalized. The handler commits those later bytes, so its hash check passes even though the reviewer saw different pixels.

Keep the displayed capture and accepted bytes together, or replace the retained entry when the file is captured again.

P2 Search hides the final capture

Show it cannot reliably open the later capture while a search is active. If the later entry's name does not match the search, selectItem replaces its index with an entry from the filtered list. The button then stays on the earlier capture or opens an unrelated screenshot.

Clear the search and rebuild the list before selecting superseded_by.

P2 Documented paths are refused

Copying save_path into screenshots-path does not always work. The action needs a path from the git root with no leading ./.

If an app lives in apps/web, save_path: doc/screenshots produces manifest paths under apps/web/doc/screenshots. Following this instruction then makes every acceptance fail. A leading ./, as used in this repository's test setup, is also refused.

Document the git-root-relative path requirement and show a subdirectory example.

When GitHub Actions supplies a nonempty GITHUB_RUN_ID, report_data adds review metadata to every entry. The exact assertions at lines 300-302, 387, and 456 do not include that metadata, so they can fail in Actions.

Escape does not blur #review-command.

If clipboard access fails, the copy fallback focuses #review-command. The handler then returns early for every key, so arrows, Y and N stop working. The handler calls searchEl.blur() instead of blurring the focused element, so Escape does not release focus. The user must click outside the textarea.

Update the keyboard handler’s Escape behavior to blur the focused input or
textarea, including #review-command, instead of blurring searchEl; preserve the
existing early return for input and textarea targets.

…GitHub issue

Copying a command into a PR comment was too many steps. The report's
Commit decisions button opens GitHub's new-issue page with the
decisions as its body; submitting it runs the same accept workflow,
which now also handles issues: it commits, posts the summary on the PR,
links it from the issue and closes the issue. The command carries the
PR number, reject-only reviews are recorded, and the PR comment still
works as a fallback for selections too long for one link.

P2 Issue updates can skip CI

If posting the issue reply or closing the issue fails after the push, finish raises before dispatch_ci runs. The screenshots are already committed, but GITHUB_TOKEN pushes do not start CI automatically. A maintainer must then start CI by hand.

Make these issue updates best-effort so their failure cannot skip the configured CI run.

🟡 Minor · "Show it" selects the wrong entry while a search filter is active. · report.html.erb:533-536

lib/snap_diff/reporters/templates/report.html.erb:533-536
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

"Show it" selects the wrong entry while a search filter is active.

reviewJump calls selectItem(item.superseded_by). If the later capture does not match the search text, selectItem replaces the index with filtered[Math.max(0, Math.min(idx, filtered.length - 1))]. That index is unrelated to the target.

Example: search for one while the later capture is named foo. The click selects an arbitrary entry, or leaves the current entry selected.

The test passes only because one_again also matches one.

Clear the filter before the jump when the target is hidden.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The screenshots-path guidance can lead to refused accepts.

The text says to set screenshots-path to your save_path. The action compares it with the manifest path, which is relative to the Git root (check_target!). The action.yml input description also says "relative to the repository root".

If the project root is a subdirectory of the Git root, save_path is not enough. For example, the repository's own workflow uses test/fixtures/app/doc/screenshots, not doc/screenshots. With the shorter value, every accept is refused with "Target path ... is not allowed".

Describe the value as the screenshot directory relative to the Git root. State that it must include the project subdirectory when the project root is not the Git root. Keep the doc/screenshots sample as a default only.

🟡 Minor · The embedded preview can differ from the bytes that the hash covers. · html.rb:339-342

lib/snap_diff/reporters/html.rb:339-342
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The embedded preview can differ from the bytes that the hash covers.

file_sha256 hashes the file on disk when the report is written. That file is the last capture.

add_entries (Line 194) drops a repeated new name and keeps the first entry. With embed_images: true, that first entry holds a data URI of the first capture, read when it was recorded.

The reviewer then sees the first capture, but the command carries the hash of the last capture. The action accepts the last capture.

Without embed_images, the preview loads the file from disk, so it matches. The new test at line 345 of html_reporter_test.rb covers only that case.

Keep the last entry for a repeated new name. The change is in add_entries and in the @new_names initializer:

# in initialize
@new_names = {}

def add_entries(entries)
  entries.each do |entry|
    if entry[:status] == "new"
      if (index = @new_names[entry[:name]])
        @entries[index] = entry # the last capture is the file on disk
        next
      end
      @new_names[entry[:name]] = @entries.size
    end
    @entries << entry
  end
end

Add a test that records the same new name twice with embed_images: true. Compare the embedded new data URI with the bytes of the manifest file.
