Refs #374.

Under typed linting, every build checks which saved ESLint results still hold by giving each file a signature: a hash of the file and of everything it imports, however indirectly. signatures() walked that whole import tree again for every file. When files import a barrel (an index.ts re-exporting everything), each file's tree is the whole project, so the cost grew with the square of the file count, on cold and warm builds alike.

The fix

Each file is now signed from its own contents plus the signatures of the files it imports, in one pass over the graph. Files that import each other in a cycle reach the same files, so they share one signature, computed once per strongly connected component. A change anywhere below a file still changes its signature, so results are kept no longer than before. Saved results are re-linted once after upgrading, because the signature format changed.

signatures() alone, barrel-shaped project (each file imports the barrel that re-exports it)

1,500 1.5 s 0.18 s / 0.04 s
3,000 6.0 s 0.32 s / 0.07 s
6,000 27 s 0.57 s / 0.13 s
full webpack build, 3,000-file barrel project, ESLint with parserOptions.project, threads: false
                             cold warm
eslint-webpack-plugin 22.0 s 9.2 s

Tests

  • test/import-graph.test.js adds three cycle cases: a change in a cycle reaches every file in it and its importers, a change below a cycle reaches the cycle, and a change above a cycle leaves it alone. They pass on main too, so the new code keeps the old behavior.
  • Locally, npm run lint and the full suite (367 tests) pass. One test, should keep ESLint's cache when asked for and no TypeScript can follow imports, fails in my sandbox on main as well, because a TypeScript install there resolves from /tmp through NODE_PATH. It passes with NODE_PATH unset.

Not covered here

  • With use: 'typescript' also enabled, the plugin is still about 3 s slower than ESLint plus fork-ts-checker-webpack-plugin on the project above. Its peak heap in webpack's process is also higher, about 1,160 MiB vs 460 MiB, though fork-ts-checker's own process isn't counted in that number.
  • In Much Slower Performance After Migrating To This Plugin #374, the reporter's real project also takes twice as long with threads: false (16 min) as without it (8 min). I haven't looked into that.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Builds now identify reusable results for more than 6,000 files covered by typed linting in 0.13–0.57 seconds, down from 27 seconds per build.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Files involved in import cycles now receive consistent signatures. Changes to a cycle or its dependencies are reflected in affected results, while changes outside the cycle remain isolated to the relevant file.

Each file's signature walked everything it imports, however indirectly,
again for every file, so a project whose files import a barrel that
imports them back paid for the whole project once per file. Files are
now signed by what the files they import are signed by, and the files
of an import cycle together, in one pass over the graph.

Over 6,000 such modules, signatures took 27 s a build and now take
0.13-0.57 s. Refs #374.

The watch callback accepts any rebuild that arrives after `edited` becomes true.
It does not check when that rebuild's compilation started. A compilation that
started before the edit can still deliver its callback after `edited` becomes
true. This can happen when the write lands while webpack runs its `done` hooks.
The result is then taken as the edit-triggered rebuild. Compare the
compilation's `stats.startTime` with the time the edit completed.

Walkthrough

The signature calculation now traverses the import graph by strongly connected component. Files in the same cycle share a component signature, which combines sorted file descriptions with signatures from imported components. Requested-file results combine component signatures with the project signature. Three tests cover signature changes for cycle members, imported dependencies, and files that import a cycle. The incremental rebuild test helper now waits for asynchronous fixture edits and disregards rebuilds that arrive before an edit completes.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 1e52a

The change improves the signature computation for typed linting. The remaining risk is a possible flaky or falsely passing incremental rebuild test, which does not affect shipped behavior. It can be fixed in a small follow-up.

On Windows, webpack's watcher can rebuild right as the watch starts,
reading the fixtures just written as changed. That rebuild lints every
file, and the test took it for the one its edit caused a second later:
it failed in about 100 ms with 2 files linted where 1 was expected, on
main as well as here. Rebuilds before the edit is written are skipped.

… before it

A rebuild already running when the edit is written can still reach the
watch callback once the edit is done, if the write lands while its done
hooks run. Its start time, not when its callback arrives, now tells it
from the rebuild the edit caused.
