Add test case for node_modules in LESS imports - #1584
develop already allows node_modules as an import root (da286cd), but wip/1.3 doesn't yet. On 1.3, the LESS import gate from wintercms/storm#245 applies to every file in the import graph. That blocks modules/system/assets/ui/less/icon.variables.less from importing Font Awesome's variables, so any combiner asset importing modules/backend/assets/less/core/boot.less fails. One example is the Translate plugin's multilingual.less, which breaks php artisan winter:util compile assets with:
Less_Exception_Compiler: variable @fa-var-500px is undefined in file .../modules/system/assets/ui/less/icon.variables.less on line 24
This adds a regression test for an import chain from an asset through an allowed root into node_modules, so the root can't be dropped without a failing test. It also adds a comment explaining why the root is there. The test fails without the node_modules root and passes with it.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
Added coverage verifying that LESS styles can import variables from packages in node_modules and compile the resulting styles correctly. The test checks that imported values appear in the compiled output and that theme styles are included, helping catch issues with this import path. No user-facing behavior changes.

Walkthrough
The change documents that node_modules is an allowed import root for the system UI’s Font Awesome LESS imports. It adds a regression test for LESS compilation through a shared file that imports a file from node_modules. The test checks the compiled output and removes its temporary fixtures.
The change documents the existing import root and adds regression coverage. No merge-blocking risk was identified.

wintercms/storm#245 applies the import gate to every file in the import
graph, so icon.variables.less only resolves Font Awesome's variables
because node_modules is an allowed root. Without it, any asset importing
the backend boot.less (e.g. the Translate plugin's multilingual.less)
fails with an undefined @fa-var-* variable.

Allow LESS imports from node_modules in CombineAssets
Cover LESS imports that reach node_modules through another root
Oct 29, 2026
@LukeTowers Rebased onto develop and retargeted. Develop already allows node_modules (da286cd), so the PR now only adds the regression test and a comment explaining that root. Merging develop into 1.3 will bring the fix over.
The npm, Mix and Vite command tests skip when node_modules is absent; the
empty directory left behind made them run on Windows CI and fail.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
makeTempThemeDir() creates the theme before the test calls random_bytes() at line 240. random_bytes() can throw, so the test can exit before finally and leave the theme behind. PHPUnit also converts unhandled filesystem warnings into test errors, so later mkdir() or file_put_contents() failures can leave earlier fixtures behind.
